People in the United States started celebrating National Teacher Day in 1953 when Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded Congress to set aside a day to recognize educators. The origins of the idea for a day are unclear. They date to the early 1940s. But some references cite the advocacy of a Wisconsin teacher and other references credit the efforts of a teacher in Arkansas for first working to establish a teacher appreciation day. One of these teachers is thought to have written to Eleanor Roosevelt, urging her to take up the cause. It didn’t become a national day until March 7, 1980, after the National Education Association (NEA) along with its Kansas and Indiana state affiliates and the Dodge City, Kan., local chapter lobbied Congress. People continued to celebrate the day in March until 1984, when the National Parent Teacher Association designated the first full fu ll week week of May as Teacher Appreciation Week. The following year, the NEA voted vot oted ed to make mak akee the the Tuesday Tues Tu esda dayy of that tha hatt week week National Nat atio iona nall Teacher Teac Te ache herr Day. Dayy. Da

Pittsylvania County Dairy Show The show was held on Saturday, April 25th upon the conclusion of the Pittsylvania Caswell County Youth Livestock Show’s breeding show. Similar to the PCYLA Livestock Show, FFA and 4-H members work tirelessly to prepare their animals for the show. The Dairy Show allows children to raise an animal who otherwise would not have the opportunity to do so. Starting in February children are assigned an animal that they lease from a local dairy farm. While working with their animals children learn the anatomy and physiology of the dairy cow. In addition, to working with their animals exhibitors attend a Showmanship Clinic; Hammock Dairy hosted the clinic this year where showmen learned how to exhibit their animal at a show. On April 25th, these youngsters exhibited their animals in two classes; showmanship and confirmation. In the showmanship class the cow and showmen were judged on the cleanliness and behavior of the animals. The confirmation class was based on the looks and style of the heifer. Also, a special class was followed after the dairy show. This class was the Pretty Cow contest- where the showmen dressed their cows up and showed them off to the audience. Thank You to all who came out to show your support of these young men and women. The Dairy Show Committee would like to extend it's appreciation to these local farmers as well: VanDerHyde Dairy, Hammock Dairy, Grandview Holsteins, and Jefferson’s Dairy. Without these local farmers the show would not have been possible.

Pittsylvania County Schools Superintendent to Retire Effective June 30, 2015 Chatham, Virginia – Pittsylvania County Schools Superintendent, James McDaniel, will retire effective June 30, 2015. He has served as Superintendent since July, 2003, and is retiring after 41 years of service in Danville and Pittsylvania County. Mr. McDaniel has released the following statement regarding the news of his retirement: “May I begin by saying what an honor and privilege it has been to serve these past 12 years as Division Superintendent for Pittsylvania County Schools. God has richly blessed my life by allowing me to work side-byside with some truly exceptional people.
Times Shared
It is worth noting that the School Board has generously offered a three-year extension to my current agreement. However, today, I am announcing my retirement, after 41 years of service, effective June 30, 2015. While I have enjoyed my time in Pittsylvania County, I hear more and more clearly each day the calling of my faith, my family and my friends. Also, there are new journeys ahead with endless possibilities worth exploring. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the School Board for their vote of confidence and support and for allowing me to become a member of this team in 1996. Pittsylvania County Schools, under the leadership of the School Board, has attained Statewide recognition as a quality educational institution. I am thankful for the opportunity and proud to be part of the team that helped increase student achievement in this division. Our administrators have provided leadership and the teachers and support staff have been professional, positive and eager to help our students experience every success. What fun and such joy it has been to work with this talented and dedicated team of professionals.
Memories Made
During my time in Pittsylvania County Schools, I have been blessed to witness the intellectual, physical, social, emotional and spiritual growth and development of our students. It has been most rewarding to witness their acquisition and application of the 21st Century college and career readiness skills necessary to be successful in an ever-shrinking, highly competitive world.
Friends Forever
Our vision is to be recognized as having an innovative, challenging and exemplary school system. Our students, by pursuing a more rigorous course of study, have helped Pittsylvania County Schools achieve this goal. Likewise, it has helped to accomplish our mission of educating and nurturing students to be successful and productive citizens. Thank you again to the School Board and to the citizens of this community for allowing me to serve the students and staff of this superb school division. It is my hope and prayer that in some small way we have helped to make Pittsylvania County Schools A Great Place to Learn and Work!”
Thank You, Mr. McDaniel, For Your Years Of Hard Work And Dedication To Pittsylvania County Schools.

K4 celebrates Earth Day! They discussed how they can take care of the earth: picking up trash, cans, and bottles and recycle them!
Mrs. Owen’s K4 class was privileged to have an Averett University nursing student, which is also a WCA alumni, discuss germs with them. They learned how germs spread by using glitter and how to correctly wash their hands.
Ready... Set... Go! The preschoolers were so excited to have an Easter Egg hunt with their friends! Before the hunt, they discussed that yes, hunts are fun... But Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection are the true meaning of Easter!
He is risen! K3 and K4 prepared a special treat to represent Jesus’ resurrection on Easter morning!
Mrs. Holdren’s Second Grade Class Visited Danville Regional Hospital
There is always learning and fun in the K2 class! They are wearing yellow for their “yellow” day, and they made a volcano for the letter V. What an exciting day!

Corner Those Who Read... Lead!
I really want my kids to enjoy, or at least appreciate reading. I want them to know what it’s like to lose themselves in a good book, be anxious to turn the pages, and not be able to put it down until they finish a chapter. So, I decided the best place to start this journey was our local library. Believe me, at first I was skeptical about taking three year olds into a place that is supposed to be quiet and tame, as my twin boys are anything but. I figure, however, that they have to learn sometime-so why not now? We’ve been welcomed with open arms every time we walk in there, it’s obvious those who work there love what they do and are just happy to see the kids enjoying the facilities. We experienced a few tiny tantrums-one being because my youngest twin decided that Franklin the stuffed turtle needed to come home with us. It took some convincing-but he finally agreed that Franklin would be homesick if he weren’t with his other friends on the bookshelf. (I may or may not have had to promise him a pony-I really can’t remember) Anyway-the kids and I ALWAYS find at least one real gem when picking out books. You know the kind of book I’m talking about. The one the kids beg you to read over and over, and the one your older ones love to read with you. Well, one of my favorites so far has been “You Are My Miracleâ€?, written by Maryann Cusimano Love. Parents, this book is absolutely adorable. It comes from a mother’s perspective-using sweet little analogies to describe her love for her little one. One of my favorite lines from the book is: “I am your ‘hush now’, you are my lyrical. I am your peace on Earth, you are my miracle.â€? So, if you’re looking for a sweet book to cozy up with for bedtimelook for this one the next time you’re in your local library.
