Kids Can Make Resolutions, Too!

Parent

Corner

New Year’s resolutions are made so adults can improve their lives in the year to come. But nowhere does it say resolutions are exclusive to adults. In fact, kids can make New Year’s resolutions and reap much the same benefits as Mom and Dad. The following are some kid-specific New Year’s resolutions, courtesy of the American Academy of Pediatrics, that can improve the lives of children while teaching them a lesson or two along the way. Preschoolers * I will clean up my toys and put them where they belong. * I will brush my teeth twice a day and wash my hands after going to the bathroom and before eating. * I will be nice and loving toward pets and all animals. I will avoid being bitten by keeping my fingers and face away from their mouths. Kids, ages 5 to 12 * I will drink milk and water three times each day and limit soda and fruit drinks to once each day. * I will apply sunscreen before I go outdoors on bright sunny days. I will try to stay in the shade whenever possible and wear a hat and sunglasses, especially when I’m playing sports. * I will try to find a sport (like basketball or soccer) or an activity that I like and do it at least three times a week. * I will always wear a helmet when riding my bicycle. * I will wear my seat belt every time I get in a car. * I will be nice to other kids. I will be friendly to kids who need friends -- like someone who is shy or is new to my school. * I will never give out personal information, including my name, home address, school name, or telephone number on the Internet. * I will never send a picture of myself to someone I chat with on the computer without my parent’s permission. Kids, ages 13 and older * I will eat at least one fruit and one vegetable every day, and I will limit the amount of soda I drink, if any at all, to one glass daily. * I will take care of my body through physical activity and nutrition. * I will choose nonviolent television shows and video games, and I will spend no more than two hours each day on these activities. * I will help out in my community by through volunteering, working with community groups or joining a group that helps the less fortunate. * I will take a break when I feel angry or stressed out and find constructive ways to deal with the stress, such as exercising, reading, writing in a journal or discussing my problem with a parent or friend. * I will talk about my choices with an adult whom I can trust when faced with a difficult decision. * I will talk with a trusted adult and attempt to find a way that I can help friends if I notice they are struggling or engaging in risky behaviors. * I will be careful about whom I choose to date and always treat the other person with respect and without coercion or violence. I will expect the same good behavior in return. * I will resist peer pressure to try drugs and alcohol. * I will not use a cell phone or text message while driving, and I will always wear a seat belt.

All Aboard For Winter!

Faculty and staff at Forest Hills were treated to a cookie exchange by the school parents and PTO. Teachers were given bakery boxes and allowed to choose from many varieties of Christmas cookies. Homemade Hot Chocolate was served with whipped cream and marshmallows. In addition, the staff was invited to choose from a selection of $10 gift cards to local restaurants and retail stores.

Students at Forest Hills who run the school store donated $250 of their profits to the Salvation Army for Christmas. In addition, the entire school collected canned goods for distribution by the Salvation Army during the holiday season.

The children in Mrs. Tunstall’s class at Northside preschool are ready for Winter! We have been learning about the 4 seasons and the changes that occur during each one. We did a craft activity in which we decorated a Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall tree. We also made a picture graph to show what our favorite season was. It looks like Winter was a class favorite!

Each time we learn a new letter, we do a craft activity using the letter of the week. For the letter P, we made a penguin. We talked about how penguins love the winter weather but also how some animals, like bears, hibernate all winter long. We are having fun learning all about the 4 season and we look forward to all that Winter has to offer!

Every Southside student received a free book that he/she could enjoy reading with parents. We encourage our students to read at least twenty minutes every night in order to improve comprehension and fluency. A good time was had by all, and the students left with big smiles on their faces as they carried home their new books.

Out With The Old, In With The New! by Dave Gluhareff It is 2016! Another year is upon us and what a great way to start fresh and put 2015 behind us and just start anew! Every New Year is full of resolutions from everyone with the intention to really get serious and accomplish something or get rid of something unhealthy. Many of us seek to reach certain goals in the New Year such as reading the Bible, taking on new hobbies or sports, finishing a project we started, learning to drive, having better communication with family or friends, making peace with someone or something, being a better student, becoming a good employee, and more! Aside from accomplishing goals or finishing something we’ve started many of us wish to get rid of something unhealthy in our lives. Many of us want to lose body fat, quit smoking, stop saying so many bad words, being happier instead of negative, getting rid of junk food then adding healthy foods into our daily nutrition plan, stop being a procrastinator, losing an attitude or grudges with people to forgive people, and more! New Year’s Resolutions are full of fresh new re-starts for our life. New Year’s Resolutions are about beginning again something better or attempting again with a more serious attitude this time. At the beginning of each New Year we have second chances as if we’ve forgiven what we didn’t get too or failed to do the prior year and get busy getting it done in the New Year.

I love second chances. Being a Christian I know my God is full of forgiveness, grace, mercy, and extra chances because He loves me. I know that He also wants me to love myself and forgive myself and start over the right way or do things better when I get off track. When we get off course and need a course correction it is okay for us to forgive ourselves too and have some mercy on ourselves and try to do things better the next time. We have to learn from our mistakes and grow more mature to not make the same mistakes over and over. If we get off track and gain too much body fat eating too much junk food and being lazy then we should admit it, forgive ourselves, and correct our own behavior by eating healthier more nutritious foods and being more active and exercising regularly. If we didn’t get around to finishing that book or project we wanted to then we have to forgive ourselves immediately and correct it by getting to it and getting it completed. If we have not been nice to a family member or friend or feel our behavior hasn’t been acceptable then we have to forgive ourselves and fix our behavior ASAP by talking openly with that person and being a better communicator clearing up any problems and making things right. Life is full of choices and we have the power to make healthy choices. We cannot blame others if we do not finish our homework, if we eat junk food, or if we have a bad attitude…no these are our choices. We have to make healthy and appropriate choices for ourselves and if it begins as a New Year’s Resolution then have at it! There is no better time to begin anew than NOW! Have a Happy New Year everyone and if you need any guidance for healthy Exercise, Nutrition, and Rest/ Stress Relief then please visit my main website www.trainwithdave.com for my FREE fitness blueprint and FREE nutrition plan and lots and lots of healthy articles and info!
