Westwood Middle School GAVEL Program Danville Public Schools provides an opportunity for 8th grade students who are interested in the legal profession to participate in a program entitled, Government and Attorney Volunteers Educating Future Lawyers (GAVEL). In order to participate in the program, students should have good attendance, be good citizens, and be committed to academic excellence. Westwood congratulates and recognizes the achievement of the following students who will participate in the GAVEL Program this year: (from left to right) Shabrien Averett, Joyce Martin, Natavia Monroe, Ishmael Muhammad, Dezyre Totten, Destiny Jones and Makeda Warner.
On Friday, September 14, Glenwood had “Dress like a Farmer Day” to celebrate and promote awareness of Virginia’s agricultural industry. We also wanted show appreciation for our Fresh Fruit and Vegetable grant. Many of the students, faculty, and staff showed up for school adorned with bandannas, boots, hats, overalls, etc.

Fire Truck Comes To Woodberry Hills Elementary
Excitement filled the air as a fire truck came to our campus as a part of Fire Safety Week. Students had the opportunity to listen to firepersons as they gave fire safety tips. The Danville Fire Department Safety House also came to our school during this presentation. The Safety House simulated a smoky house and allowed students the chance to learn how to safely get out of a burning house. Even more excitement was added to the day when the firemen had to leave early to help in a real life emergency. The firemen are always there to help us. Page 2 • Classcandy© • November 2012

Building Character
Parents,
mark your calendars! Registration is now open for
IN SEARCH OF THE HONEST TRUTH Since the beginning of time, people have searched for the “honest truth.” For thousands of years, great thinkers called philosophers have discussed and debated the truth. Scientists and researchers have conducted millions of experi- ments to find out the truth. Police officers and detectives work 24 hours a day to locate clues to “uncover” the truth. Why so much fuss about the truth? Because the truth is very important to everyone. Telling the truth is very important, too. And telling the truth is a big part of what makes us good human beings. If we are honest with each other we become responsible, dependable and trustworthy. We show the world that we respect ourselves and respect others. As you can see, practicing honesty goes a long, long way! What’s the best way to practice honesty? One way is to never tell lies, never cheat and never steal. But sometimes it’s hard not to tell a small lie, cheat a little bit, or steal a little something. But you know what? Those are the easy ways out. Cowards lie, cheat and steal. Being honest takes courage and integrity! Are you ready to be an honesty hero? Good for you! Another way to practice honesty is to stay true to yourself. Do you know what that means? It means that no matter what somebody tells you to do, you do what you know is right. So, believe in yourself and never stop practicing honesty and seeking the truth! VOCABULARY: Discuss: to talk about something. Debate: to talk about different points of view. Researcher: someone who studies a subject in depth. Experiment: a test to examine something. Integrity: The quality of having strong values.
ACTIVITY: Think about the last time you almost told a lie, but decided against telling it. What made you change your mind? How did you feel when you told the truth? How do you think you would have felt if you had lied?

SOCCER
The Westover Christian Academy Varsity Soccer team fell in the quarterfinals of the VACA state tournament on Tuesday to Fresta Valley by a score of 6-1. The Bulldogs were playing the defending VACA state champion and were simply overmatched. WCA fought hard in the second half but could not overcome a poor first half showing. The lone goal for WCA was scored by Zack Taylor who was assisted by Seth Wilson. With the loss this drops our record to 11-10. This concludes the 2012 Varsity Soccer season for the Bulldogs. Westover soccer has had its best year ever by having another winning season, getting to double digit wins, setting the school record for wins, finishing 3rd at the regional tournament, qualifying for the state tournament for the first time in school history, and having the South Region player of the year. Congratulations to all of the players who made this year the rousing success that it was. I look forward to continued success in the future. Thanks to all of the parents for your continued support of Westover Christian Academy and the soccer program. Remember next season begins bright and early on Monday July 29 at 7:00AM. I hope to see you then!

Parents & Kids - How should we Eat at Thanksgiving?! What in the world should we eat on Thanksgiving! I think this all depends on what our goals in fitness are. Thanksgiving should be a time of thanks and a time of laughter with family and friends, but there is always a huge amount of food around along with that bird (Turkey). Read below for ideas and tips to find out how we should best pick and choose our foods according to our goals. If your goal is (Fat or Weight Loss): We get so caught up in calorie counting and what is the right or wrong low calorie or low sugar food item to put into our mouths that we forget about the simple easy and healthy easy choices. Thanksgiving is a holiday and in my opinion, and what I tell all of my One-On-One, Small Group Clients, and Virginia Bootcampers is that they need to splurge a little on the holidays. How do they do that? They need to plan for the holiday meals by being as good as possible prior-to (before) the holiday day, and then splurge on the day of the holiday. What if they do not want to or have a hard time eating clean and healthy prior to the holiday? Then I give them some healthy options such as sticking to the lean meats and low calorie and low starch (if late in the evening) vegetables. We all need to remember moderation is also very important! Remember to wash all the
healthy stuff down with good fresh water if possible! When losing body fat I believe we really need to stay away from sugars (fruits are the exception and are okay earlier in our days but not good for evenings and nights before bed) most of the time and if someone says the sugar-free stuff is better… well I disagree because normally the sugar-free stuff is some processed something that our body does not need or rejects anyway. I believe when we eat sugar substitutes we are falsely attempting to satisfy a craving. When we do not really satisfy a craving for sugar the right way, we usually end up wanting more and even worse the next time. We need to be eating for maximum performance and best possible daily functioning, not just for the sake of saying we are eating low calorie foods or sugar-free stuff. Our bodies can take a little bit of sugar, but we really are asking for trouble when it comes to gaining body fat when
Kids & Parents Healthy Tips!
we overdo it! Sugar, if eaten in even small amounts, such as from fruits or sugar in tea or coffee should be consumed in the early parts of the day. The reason for consuming the sugar earlier in the day is so we can have the rest of the day to have it burned off by being used as fuel for moving our bodies in exercise, sports, or normal activity.
Lower Calorie and Healthy Food Choices: by Dave Gluhareff Fitness Trainer
When it comes to those of us who are trying to shed the body fat, we need to remember no starchy carbohydrates or starchy veggies and no saturated fats and sugars and really eat a moderate amount of the good lean meats and veggies. If those of us on the fat loss plan mess up and splurge on the Thanksgiving Day meal and leftovers, then it is okay! We need to just work extra hard the next few days after when performing our workouts, exercise, sports activities, and returning to our healthy eating plans. Good luck and have a great Thanksgiving!

If you would like to help and/or participate in the parade please fill in the appropriate place of the guaranteed delivery slip. The parade is December 8th at 6:00 PM. Inclement weather policy: On the first day of potential bad weather, Sacred Heart School will follow the city schools in terms of closings and delays. We will make our own decision from each day forward. Sacred Heart School will still be announced, as in the past, but we will utilize the resources the city schools have to make initial calls. Many times they will need to say closed or delayed longer because of buses. Because of this, we will make our decisions after the initial day of inclement weather.

Turkey talk When November rolls around, turkey becomes more than just another option at the deli counter. For some, turkey becomes an obsession around this time of year, with ponderings just how much to buy, how to cook it, and the ways leftovers can be turned into delicious treats. Tom Turkey certainly takes on icon status, and that's understandable considering the turkey was once suggested as the national bird of the U.S. (the bald eagle won, however). Turkey is tasty, and it's more than just a Thanksgiving menu item. Check out these other facts about turkey. * Wild turkeys were nearly wiped out in North America by 1940. It took the efforts of preservationists to rekindle the numbers of wild turkeys out there. * Turkeys do more than gobble. They have been known to make up to 20 distinct vocalizations, according to animal experts. Page 10 • Classcandy© • November 2012

* Turkeys are a billion-dollar industry. Annual totals are around $3.6 billion and the companies Jennie-O Turkey Store, Cargill Value Added Meats and Butterball, LLC are industry leaders.
* At least one turkey will not make it to Thanksgiving dinner this year. That's because every year the President pardons one turkey to go on and live to see another November. All bets are off for next year, though.
* Adult males are known as toms, young males as jakes, and all females as hens. * The best time to see a wild turkey is on a warm clear day or in a light rain. * Domesticated turkeys do not fly but the wild ones can. Tutors Help Fill Educational Gaps
The Parent Corner
Many parents choose to hire a tutor for a child who is struggling with a portion of his or her school work. Finding the right tutor involves some research. That’s because, in addition to the tutor being well versed in his or her area of expertise, he or she should have a connection with the tutored child. Otherwise the child may struggle. The role of standardized testing has increased in recent years, and a child’s test scores are now subject to heightened scrutiny during his or her academic career. No longer just for admittance to college, standardized tests now play a bigger role earlier on in a child’s academic career. Tests taken during elementary school may be used to determine where a child attends middle school. Some schools are prepping students strictly for what will be on tests. The resulting gaps in the curriculum can leave students clueless about routine lessons, such as spelling or grammar.

The combination of these factors has led many parents to hire tutors to ensure their children receive a more well-rounded education. According to Eduventures, an educational market research firm, tutoring is now a $4 billion industry, with revenues increasing by 15 percent each year since 2001. With so many people getting into the tutoring business, the average parent may not know where to look to hire someone for his or her child’s needs. There are a few steps you can take to hire a tutor. • Contact your child’s teacher or teachers, some of whom may tutor outside of the classroom. If your child responds well to a teacher’s methods, consult that teacher about the possibility of your child receiving private tutoring. Visit the guidance department and find out • if they recommend tutors who have successfully worked with students at the school in the past. This can help narrow down the number of prospects. Talk to other parents about their experienc• es with tutors. Those who have been in the same situation may recommend a tutor or point you in the right direction. Explore the franchised tutoring businesses • available in the neighborhood. Most, if not all, tutoring companies have a Web site where you can research options. A quick browsing of the Internet may also yield reviews of particular companies, so you will get a better idea of their track records. Check the newspaper for advertisements. • Independent or freelance tutors may advertise their services in the classifieds or even in a church bulletin. The newspaper also may provide information on former teachers or educators acting as volunteer tutors. Visit the library and see if they have a rela• tionship with any local tutors. Or see if any tutors are using the library as a meeting place for tutoring sessions. This way you can make a connection and find out more information. Once you find the right tutor, be sure to have all policies spelled out in a contract. Make sure the tutoring rate and duration of services is listed as well as any guarantees of student improvement. It is a good idea to do a background check on the tutor to ensure your child’s safety. When the student meets with the tutor, make sure it is in a quiet, private location that will facilitate learning without any distractions.

Classcandy Welcomes Carlisle School! Carlisle School Danville Campus has spent the month of October focusing on Fire Safety. On Thursday, October 12, the Danville Fire Department visited the students. During their visit, they spoke on what to do if there is a fire, reviewed the sound of a fire detector with the children, showed the students what a fireman looks like in his regular clothes and then how he transitions to his fire suit in just seconds, allowed the children to sit in their firetruck, and took pictures with the students. A BIG THANKS to our firemen and women for serving our community!!

Things to Do - Thanksgiving Day With relatives or other families, plan a potluck feast with everyone sharing in the cooking. Kids can prepare a skit about what they think the first Thanksgiving was like. Let this be the entertainment after the big midday feast. Then, using a truck, have a late afternoon hayride on country back roads or in fields. Return home for a new Pilgrim tradition on pinata-bashing. If you can’t find a pinata, make one out of two paper grocery bags (one inside the other for strength), tied and hung from a tree or in a large wide doorway. Fill the bag with wrapped candy, blindfold each person, and let him take a swing at the bag with a stick or small bat. After collecting all the candies, have a simple pick-up supper of turkey sandwiches and fruit. * Many people blame ‘ol Tom Turkey for making them drowsy after the Thanksgiving meal. The truth is that other foods on the Thanksgiving table may have as much or even more of the amino acid L-tryptophan that’s linked to sleepiness. Plus, you need carbohydrates to work in concert with the tryptophan for it to reach the brain and produce the sleepy effects.
• Peanuts are not actually nuts at all! They are legumes – like beans, peas and lentils. • Americans eat three pounds of peanut butter per person every year – enough PB to coat the floor of the Grand Canyon! • One acre of peanuts will make 30,000 peanut butter sandwiches. Two former U.S. Presidents were peanut farmers: Thomas Jefferson and Jimmy Carter. • Runner peanuts are preferred for peanut butter, and are grown primarily in Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi. • Peanut shells are used to make kitty litter, wallboard, fireplace logs, paper and animal feed, and are sometimes used as fuel for power plants.

Peanut Butter timeline - discover the history of peanuts! 1890: A St. Louis physician developed the idea of packaging peanut paste for people with bad teeth. Peanut paste was sold for six cents per pound. 1895: The Kellogg brothers patented the process of preparing peanut butter with steamed nuts. Today the nuts are roasted, and the peanut butter is much tastier. 1903: Dr. George Washington Carver developed more than 300 other uses for peanuts, and is considered by many to be the father of the peanut industry. 1904: C.H. Sumner introduced peanut butter to the world at the Universal Exposition in St. Louis. He sold $705.11 of the treat at his concession stand! 1908: Krema Products Company in Columbus, Ohio, began selling peanut butter and is the oldest peanut butter company still in operation today. 1922: Joseph L. Rosefield sold peanut butter in California, churning it to make it smoother. He received the first patent for peanut butter that could stay fresh up to a year. 1928: One of the first companies to adopt Rosefield’s process was Swift & Company, later renamed Peter Pan. 1932: Rosefield began producing peanut butter under the Skippy label, and created the first crunchy-style peanut butter two years later. 1955: Procter & Gamble entered the peanut butter business, introduced Jif in 1958. Now owned by the J.M. Smucker Company, Jif operates the world’s largest peanut butter plant, producing 250,000 jars every day!

The Magic Window Moral of the story Friends are for cheering you up in your worst moments
Once upon a time there was a little boy who became very ill. He had to spend all day in bed, unable to move. Because other children weren’t allowed to come near him, he suffered greatly, and spent his days feeling sad and blue. There wasn’t much he could do except look out of the window. Time passed, and his feeling of despair just grew. Until one day he saw a strange shape in the window. It was a penguin eating a sausage sandwich. The penguin squeezed in through the open window, said “good afternoon” to the boy, turned around, and left again. Of course, the boy was very surprised. He was still trying to work out what had happened, when outside his window he saw a monkey in a nappy, busy blowing up a balloon. At first the boy asked himself what that could possibly be, but after a while, as more and more crazy-looking characters appeared out the window, he burst out laughing and found it hard to stop. Anyone wanting to stop laughing would never be helped by seeing a pig playing a tambourine, an elephant jumping on a trampoline, or a dog wearing a pair of glasses and talking about nothing except politics. The little boy didn’t tell anyone about this because who would have believed him? Even so, those strange characters ended up putting joy back in his heart, and in his body. Before long, his health had improved so much that he was able to go back to school again. There he got to talk to his friends, and tell them all the strange things he had seen. While he was talking to his best friend he saw something sticking out of his friend’s school bag. The boy asked his friend what it was, and he was so insistent that finally his friend had to show him what was in the bag: There, inside, were all the fancy-dress suits and disguises that his best friend had been using to try to cheer the little boy up! And from that day on, the little boy always did his best to make sure that no one felt sad and alone.. Author..
