Choose Quality Care!
Registration Kicks Off
March 20, 2015
Before enrolling in a childcare center, preschool, or after school program, make an unannounced visit and ask these questions or make these observations: Is the center or preschool participating in the VA Star Quality Initiative? What education and training in early childhood development do the directors and teachers have? Does the staff regularly participate in professional development workshops and trainings? Is the facility bright, cheerful, orderly, and clean? And is there enough space for children to run and play freely outdoors? Are interactions between caregivers and children positive, supportive, and responsive? Is a sample of the center’s monthly schedule available? For more information on choosing quality childcare, call 797-8887 or visit www.SmartBeginningsDP.org.
Register for Kindergarten! School Readiness Checklist
Learn the Signs. Act Early! Taking a first step, smiling for the first time, and waving “bye bye” are called developmental milestones. From birth to age 5, your child should reach milestones in how he plays, learns, speaks and acts. Not reaching these milestones, or reaching them much later than other children, could be a sign of a developmental delay. If you are concerned about your child’s development, take these steps:
Ask About Developmental Screening Children should have developmental screenings at 9, 18, and 24 months of age, or whenever you have a concern. Ask your child’s doctor about developmental screening.
Ask For a Referral If you or the doctor thinks there might be a delay, ask the doctor for a referral to a specialist who can do a more in-depth evaluation of your child.
Get an Evaluation To find out if your child qualifies for intervention services, contact the Infant & Toddler Connection of Virginia at 1-800-234-1448 or visit www.infantva.org. The evaluation is free and you do not need to wait for a doctor’s referral or medical diagnosis.
Have you…
Contacted your child’s school for specific registration times and a registration form? Visited your child’s school with all the required documents to register? Talked to your child in a positive way about what to expect in kindergarten? Taken your child on a visit to their new school? Read to your child every day?
Remember, you know your child best. If you have a concern, don’t wait! 133 Robertson Avenue • Danville, VA 24541 • (434) 797-8887 www.SmartBeginningsDP.org
