Children grow and develop their personalities in various ways. While many youngsters are teased or receive some good-natured ribbing at some point in their school careers, some teasing can eventually turn into bullying. The National Education Association estimates that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. Furthermore, more than 70 percent of students report incidents of bullying at their schools. Although children in lower grades have reported being in more fights than those in higher grades, there is a higher rate of violent crimes in middle and high schools than in elementary schools. According to the association Make Beats Not Beat Downs, harassment and bullying have been linked to 75 percent of school shooting incidents. Bullying can take many forms, and learning the warning signs as a parent can help prevent harassment and potentially dangerous situations. Verbal: If your child reports being called names, being the recipient of racist, sexist or homophobic jokes, or being spoken to in an offensive or suggestive way, this can be a form of verbal bullying. Cyber: Social media, email and text messaging has become a way for bullies to spread malicious messages or photos. In the era of digital media, this type of bullying has increased considerably. Physical: Some bullies engage in physical attacks, including hitting, kicking, spitting, or other forms of physical confrontation. Destroying personal property also is considered physical bullying. Indirect: Gossiping and spreading nasty rumors about a person is another form of bullying. This type of bullying may go hand-in-hand with cyber bullying. Signs your child is being bullied Parents can recognize certain signs that their child is being bullied at school. Bullied children frequently make excuses to avoid going to school. While the desire to stay home is something many children may express, those who are bullied may do so much more frequently. Bullied children tend to avoid certain places and may be sad, angry, withdrawn, or depressed. They may have trouble sleeping or experience changes in appetite, and bullied youngsters’ academic performance may suffer. Also, parents may notice that children return from school missing some of their belongings. Signs your child is the bully Parents may not want to imagine their children bullying other students, but bullies do exist. Children who bully other kids have strong needs for power and negative dominance. They may find satisfaction in causing suffering to others. Some signs that your child may be a bully include: * easily becoming violent with others * having friends who bully others * blaming others quickly * comes home with belongings that do not belong to him or her * getting in trouble with teachers or school administrators * picking on siblings * not accepting responsibility for actions There are ways parents can teach their children to act properly when faced with a bully. First, parents should explain that bullying is not the child’s fault and he or she does not deserve to be picked on. Next, parents can let children know that being assertive but not violent with bullies may diffuse the situation, as some bullies thrive on the fear of their victims. If the bullying behavior continues, the student should speak to an adult or authority figure. Parents of bullies may need to be especially mindful of their children’s behavior. Counseling could be necessary to determine what is compelling kids to bully other students.

Sacred Heart School: In Memory of Mrs. T
The school recently celebrated the life of Christine Tyburski , a beloved religion teacher, after school coordinator, and friend to all who passed away following a brave fight with cancer. Students and staff supported her fight by dressing in pink and wearing pink Team Mrs. T bracelets in her honor during her treatments. Following her recent passing, the volleyball team dedicated a recent game against Westover Christian Academy in her memory and wore pink hair ribbons and pink ribbons woven in the their shoe laces. The students, faculty, and staff mourn the passing Christine Tyburski (affectionately known as Mrs. T), but rejoice in the 21 year legacy she leaves Sacred Heart School.

Smart Food Choices to Get You Healthy! by Dave Gluhareff Most of us love to eat some junk food sometimes and splurge on foods that are not so healthy but we all know that it’s not healthy for us to do so often. Sure you may not know exactly what the healthiest options are but most of us grow up having a fairly good idea of what is healthy and what is not. I hear people (kids and adults) all the time say they do not know how to eat right so let’s get this cleared up. If I had two tables in front of you each loaded with foods could you tell me which table is the healthy table and which one is the Un-Healthy table? Let me describe the foods on Table 1 and Table 2: Table 1 – Fruits (apples, bananas, pears, strawberries, cherries, oranges, grapefruits, blueberries, raspberries, mangos, plums, peaches, nectarines, etc), Vegetables (cucumbers, lettuce, squash, peppers, zucchinis, spinach, kale, collard greens, green beans, corn, etc), Lean Meats (chicken, turkey, pork loin, lean beef, fish, etc) , low fat dairy products (cheeses, yogurts, skim milk, etc), Nuts (almonds, peanuts, cashews, walnuts, pecans, pistachios, etc), Beans (white beans, lima beans, black beans, red beans, kidney beans, etc), Starchy Complex Carbohydrates (oatmeal, sweet potatoes, red potatoes, whole grain breads, brown rice, etc), and fresh Water to drink. Table 2 – Doughnuts, hard candy, chocolate/caramel bars, potato chips, honey buns, popsicles, ice cream, pop tarts, nachos, slushies, pizza, greasy cheeseburgers, pink hotdogs, fried chicken, fried fish, French fries, twinkies, cinnamon rolls, onion rings, cheese fries, chili cheese fries, candy apples, cotton candy, cakes, pastries, pies, heavy sugary syrups, heavy dressings, potatoes (with sour cream,
bacon bits, butter), all these foods with sodas and high sugar juices to drink. This was easy right?! Table 1 is the Healthy table! Many times we adults and kids make healthy nutrition too hard and act like we do not know how to eat healthy or make healthy choices. Sometimes it’s that we actually do know but are lazy and make excuses to not eat healthy. When we eat junk we feel like junk. If we eat un-healthy food choices then our bodies and brains respond by getting slow, fatigued, stressed, sick, and weak. On the other hand when we eat healthy nutrition daily our bodies are happy and perform so much better as do our brains. Eating healthy foods helps us to be better athletes, better students, better kids, better adults, better employees/workers, better thinkers, and just better at all things. When we eat healthy foods we have healthier immune systems so we get sick less often and stay stronger with higher energy. Our brains think faster and clearer when we eat healthy foods too so we do better at work and in school and with homework! Kids and Parents you guys sit down together and write out a healthy grocery list together that includes healthy foods like the ones I’ve mentioned here and you guys can also go to my website www. trainwithdave.com and click on Nutrition for my FREE meal/snack plan and healthy meal/snack ideas and more food choices! Make eating healthy a family thing! If everyone is eating better foods then everyone will feel, look, and move well plus have stronger immune systems! Spend some quality time as a family and/or with friends to setup healthy meals, snacks, and grocery lists each week and plan ahead. Planning ahead your healthy nutrition is very rewarding because your brain and body will get more energy, strength, and endurance to help you stay healthy and strong! Have an awesome October and Happy Halloween!
