A steak fanatic, my father always picks out cuts that include a bone because he loves to nibble on it.

One night Father and I were finishing our dinners at a steakhouse, and I could tell he wanted to start gnawing on the bone. But he couldn't bear to do so in public.

Lawyer
"Excuse me," he said, calling the waitress over, "would you please wrap this bone up for my dog?" He has never owned a dog in his life, but the white lie seemed a tactful solution to his dilemma.
When my mother was called for jury duty, she felt confident of her ability to answer the questions asked of prospective jurors.
A few minutes later the waitress returned to our table. "Here's your bone sir," she said, handing over a large package. "And while I was in the kitchen, I grabbed a few more out of the scrap bucket."
As a young attorney, I had filled her in on what to expect. Asked about the occupations of family members, Mom answered, "My son is a lawyer." As a follow-up, she was asked if she had ever used the services of an attorney. "Only to mow my lawn."
The Honeymoon’s Over My wife, a registered nurse, once fussed over every pain or mishap that came my way. Recently, however, I got an indication that the honeymoon is over. I was about to fix the attic fan, and as I lifted myself from the ladder in the attic, I scratched my forehead on a crossbeam. Crawling along, I picked up splinters in both hands, and I cut one hand replacing the fan belt. On the way down the ladder, I missed the last two rungs and turned my ankle. When I limped into the kitchen, my wife took one look and said, "Are those your good pants?"
Telling Time I was teaching my First Grade class to tell time using a conventional-style analog clock. "We'll be learning about the hour hand and the minute hand," I explained. One of the students interrupted and said, "I don't need to learn on that kind of clock. My dad bought me this digital watch, and right now it's ten minutes to 38."

Words of Advice for 2014
sales & Rental
“Where you want it, when you want it.”
We should remind ourselves to take a break from the many priorities, deadlines, busywork and interruptions that life hands us every day.
20’ & 40’ Storage Containers & Storage Trailers Steel Construction • Easy Open Double Doors The Perfect Storage Solution for Camping Equipment, ATVs, Building Materials, etc.
There are so many essential parts of life that can distract us from the important tasks in prevention, planning, setting priorities and heading forward to long-term goals.

Stress can easily arise easily, partly from a resulting feeling of lack of control and also from one’s perspective on a given situation. It can also come from losing the longterm planning and priorities that are meant to give us a peace of mind and patience with the world. A friend recently passed along these thoughts on stress. A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, “How heavy is this glass of water?” Answers called out ranged from 8 ounces to 20 ounces. The lecturer replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance.”

“In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes,” he continued, “and that’s the way it is with stress management. If we carry all of our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.” “As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re well rested, we can carry on with the burden. So, whatever burdens you’re carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can. Don’t pick them up again until after you’ve rested a while. They will then seem so much lighter.”
Bank Software Working at the call center of a major bank, I deal with customer complaints. A very irate customer called one day to declare, "My new computer banking software doesn't work."
• Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue. • Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. • Always wear stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it. • Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be “recalled” by their maker. • If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. • It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to be kind to others. • Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time; you won’t have a leg to stand on. • Nobody cares if you can’t dance well; just get up and dance.
Forgotten Birthday A wife was very disappointed and quite upset over her husband forgetting her birthday. He diplomatically responded, "How do you expect me to remember your birthday when you never look any older?"

NBC hires Burton BY BILL DYER
Special to the Piedmont Shopper South Boston’s Jeff Burton will move to the broadcasting booth serving as a full-time analyst for NBC following the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. “This is an exciting new challenge and I am thrilled to be joining the NBC Sports family,” Burton told SB Nation. “I will prepare for each race as if I was driving in it, and I look forward to sharing my experience, views and insights with all the dedicated and passionate NASCAR fans.” Burton has long been regarded as one of NASCAR’s most knowledgeable drivers, and it came as no surprise that one day he would end up in a broadcasting booth. In a move which was announced last week, Burton will work both in the booth on race weekends and other programming during the week. When NBC secured the rights to broadcast the second half of the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series races in July 2015 from TNT and ABC/ ESPN, Burton was the first person NBC sought as an analyst. “His insights, keen observations and many trophies have earned the respect of everyone involved with the sport,” NBC Sports executive producer Sam Flood said. “He will be an outstanding analyst, and has everyone here looking even more forward to getting started.” Burton is not exactly putting his TV wardrobe together just yet. Before joining NBC, Burton will work as a test driver and compete in selected races for Michael Waltrip Racing in 2014 in a deal that was made public last week. The exact number of races has yet to be determined. Burton won 21 Cup races and 27 Nationwide events in a career that began in 1993. His 20-year run as a driver ended last month at HomesteadMiami Speedway. In 691 Cup starts, Burton posted 134 top-five finishes and 254 top-10 finishes. He finished eight times in the final top-10 in points, and won almost $73 million. The broadcasting booth will be a good fit for Burton. His knowledge of the sport will be a welcome sight.

Financial Goals for the New Year As we leave 2013 behind and enter into a new year here are a few ideas for your New Years resolutions. Pay down debt… Take a look at your overall debt situation and decide what your course of action will be. Paying off debts with smaller balances and higher interest rates first is always a smart decision. Make sure that you are paying more than minimum payments. Do not accumulate more debt! Improve credit score… There is no better time than right now to start getting your credit repaired. The most important factor in improving your credit is making your payments on time! Make better financial decisions… If you need a loan shop around for the best options. Stay away from predatory lenders such as payday lenders or title loan companies. Try a credit union first. Have an emergency fund… Everyone needs an emergency fund! Make it your goal to have at least $1000.00 in a savings account somewhere that you will not be tempted to use it. If $1000.00 seems unattainable then make it $500.00. It is just important that you have something you call fall back on in case of a real emergency.

Free health program targeting childhood obesity launches DANVILLE – The Partnering for Obesity Planning and Sustainability iChoose pilot program launched recently at the Danville City Auditorium in an effort to combat childhood obesity throughout the region. “Childhood obesity is epidemic,” said Bryan Price, health and wellness coordinator for Danville Parks and Recreation. “With so many unhealthy options available, it’s important to understand how to make good decisions and how those decisions can affect your health” The iChoose initiative is a three-month health program targeting children ages 8-12 years old in the Dan River Region. The program is designed to provide helpful tips to families in an effort to improve not only the child but the entire family’s eating and physical activity behaviors. During the program, participating families will attend six, 90-minute health classes (beginning in February) and physical activity classes will be offered two times a week. Participants will also be provided six 5-10-minute supportive phone calls and six newsletters for children. Health screenings before, during and at the end of the program will monitor progression. “We’re excited about this program,” said Price. “Good health starts at home, but with so much information out there, sometimes it is hard to know where to begin. This program is offering families a chance to make good decisions together.” The pilot program is funded by the National Institute of Health. Partners in this project include Virginia Department of Health, Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville Parks and Recreation, Boys and Girls Clubs of Danville and Virginia Tech. For more information, contact Price at (434) 797-8848.
If you were at Target on December 21st and saw all the police officers. Don't worry the store was safe. It was not being held up. It was the Annual Cops and Kids event. The local FOP with officers from Danville Police Dept, Pittsylvania County and the Danville Sheriff's Office were taking part it the yearly Program. During the year they hold fund raisers and send out donations letter to ask for help to take children shopping that may not other wise have a Christmas. Some of the children are found when the officers respond to calls or thru circumstances that happen during the year. This year the event was very emotional. One family was helped because they lost their father this past year at a young age. Another had lost their home to a fire earlier this year. One mother I talked to said she didn't know what she was going to do for her children if it had not been for the program. She and I had a good cry afterwards. Most of the times people just want to bad mouth our law enforcement. They never see the good things they do. I have seen it for over 12 or more years now. If you would like to help them for next year, you can send a donation to Danville FOP, P O Box 3609 Danville, Va 24543.
2013 Senior Tour Championship PINEHURST — Three Virginians and a Pennsylvanian living in Florida took home the hardware in the annual Senior Amateur Golf Tour Championship played on four Pinehurst courses Nov. 12-13. Ron Sullins of Yorktown Va., shot a 36-hole score of 151 to capture the Championship Flight hardware, but it took a playoff to get the job done. Brian Layne, also of Yorktown, simply ran away and hid from the field in Flight A, winning by nine strokes. Lester Brightbill, the Pennsylvanian now living in The Villages in Florida, won Flight B by three shots and David Davis of Martinsville, Va., claimed a two-stroke win in Flight C. The championship was played on National Golf Club, Dormie Club, Legacy Golf Links and Seven Lakes Country Club. Sullins, who is 60, retired from the military and now working for a private security firm, was making his fourth appearance in the national championship and came to Pinehurst feeling good about his game. “I came here playing well and hoping to be in the running,” he said after posting rounds of 75 at Legacy and 76 at Seven Lakes and clinching the Championship Flight title with a par on the first hole of the sudden-death playoff. “I drove the ball well both days and that was the key for me; keeping it in the fairway,” Sullins said. “I’ve been playing recreational golf for 42 years and play about three times a week, but this was a lot bigger than anything else I’ve ever won. It’s a good feeling.” Layne was somewhat more surprised with his A Flight win, especially by the margin. He shot 74 at Seven Lakes and 76 at Legacy. “I didn’t come here with a lot of confidence,” he said. “I was playing horribly. But I made the decision to cut down on my swing and it paid off. It was just something I did on my own. I was just too ‘handsy’. “I just tried to keep from making any big mistakes and the key was driving and putting well. And I also had two chip-in birdies today.” This was the second Tour Championship title for Layne, who won the B Flight in the Regular Tour Championship in 2008, despite having taken up the game only eight years ago. “The first one was nice, but I like this one better,” he said. Brightbill, 65, a retired Pennsylvania state policeman, took up the game after leaving the military but had never tasted victory on this level. His B Flight victory came by three strokes. “I was hitting it straight and my putting came along today,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve ever won anything on a national level. “It’s top shelf.” Davis, a 63-year-old playing in only his second Tour Championship, credited an injury for his win in C Flight. “I’ve never won anything in golf before,” he said. “And the key for me was a pulled muscle in my back that kept me from swinging too hard. “Seriously, it was so painful that I was close to withdrawing and going home.” But the 63-year-old retired telephone company employee stuck it out and the result was a two-stroke victory as he shot rounds of 83-93—176. “Usually, I just grip it and rip it,” he said, “but with the pulled muscle, I played conservatively and it paid off.” Like the other champions, Davis enjoys more than just competition on the Amateur Tour. “I really enjoy the fellowship with the other players,” he said. “This is by far the best tour I’ve ever played on.” The team Cup was won by Charlotte with a 2 day total of 1315 followed closely by Raleigh/Pinehurst at 1335 then the Triad tour and Piedmont, VA.

“Everything’s Funner When You’re Here” I realize the above title is not grammatically correct. I don’t care. It is historically correct, and that is what matters to me. Allow me to explain... Being a pastor, there are few times of the year that are conducive to getting away on vacation. One time that my family and I have found conducive to that end is the few days right after Christmas. In general there is very little going on that demands our attention. Perhaps it is the fact that everyone is still stuffed with turkey and exhausted from shopping, caroling, wrapping, unwrapping, and the like, but whatever the reason, we are usually able to get away for a few days with relative ease. And so it was that this year, Christmas night, my family and I drove toward the sand and salt of Myrtle Beach. We arrived very late, settled in for the night, and slept a peaceful sleep. This was to be a mini-vacation, not a full one, since we did have some pressing things to attend to on Monday. But a half week of vacation is still a very nice half week! The next day was uneventful, and very nice. But early on Friday morning my phone rang, and everything changed. A member of my church had been airlifted to Asheville with a Hemorrhagic stroke,

and they did not know if he would live. Within fifteen minutes I had a few things packed up and was hugging my wife and kids goodbye. They would stay there with Dana’s parents while I drove back. The adults were fine, they understand that this is the nature of the ministry. My kids are very good and giving and generous kids, but they are still kids, and were very upset to see me go. Driving away from crying kids is not an easy thing... Six hours later I arrived in Asheville. The news was not great, but it certainly was good. My member was able to recognize me on sight, and could follow simple commands. He was stabilizing quickly, and whereas the nurse on the phone six hours earlier had said “get here as fast as you can,” they were now using words like “therapy” and “rehabilitation.” I stayed for a couple of hours, and when informed that this would be a very long process, weeks, very likely, I got back in the car and headed back to be with my family. I arranged for church members to be visiting with him for the next two days, and near midnight I was back at the hotel.
so till the next evening. After supper I took the kids down to the pool for a while. I military pressed them over my heads one by oneand threw them out into the water. I swam with the girls and wrestled with my son. And it was then that my youngest swam up to me, hugged me tightly and said “Everything’s funner when you’re here.” I’m glad that it’s ok for a man to cry. The ministry is a stressful life, but my wife and I have spent the last fourteen plus years of it, since the day we brought my son home, making sure that our kids don’t just have “a pastor and pastor’s wife,” but an honest to goodness mom and dad. I have seen far too many pastors lose everything by tending to the ministry while neglecting their families. I suppose that this column really applies to everyone, of every profession. Life is busy, and most everyone has more things to do than they do hours in the day. But when a person is one day old and senile, I am pretty sure that the one thing he or she will never forget is the day that a child hugged them tight and said “Everything’s funner when you’re here.”
I knew the kids were happy, but I did not know how much

Healthier Choices Sweet ‘n’ Hot Glazed Salmon INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 cups apricot nectar 1/3 cup chopped dried apricots 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons reduced sodium soy sauce 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 (3/4 pound) salmon filet without skin DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat your oven’s broiler, and grease a broiling pan. 2. In a saucepan over medium heat, mix together the apricot nectar, dried apricots, honey, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, cinnamon and cayenne. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until reduced by about half. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Remove 1/4 cup of the glaze for basting, and set the remaining aside. 3. Place the salmon filet on the greased broiling pan, and brush with glaze. Broil 3 inches from the heat for 8 to 12 minutes, or until salmon flakes easily with a fork. Gently turn over once during cooking, and baste frequently during the last 4 minutes. Serve with remaining glaze.
Healthy Garden Salad INGREDIENTS: 5 tablespoons red wine vinegar 3 tablespoons grapeseed oil 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro 2 limes, juiced 1 teaspoon white sugar 3/4 teaspoon salt 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 (1 pound) package frozen shelled edamame (green soybeans) 3 cups frozen corn kernels 1 pint cherry tomatoes, quartered 4 green onions, thinly sliced 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large serving bowl, whisk together the red wine vinegar, grapeseed oil, cilantro, lime juice, sugar, salt and garlic. Set aside. 2. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the soybeans and boil for 3 minutes. Add corn to the boiling water and continue cooking for 1 more minute. Drain very well, and pour into the bowl with the dressing. Gently mix in the cherry tomatoes, green onions and black beans. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to chill and blend the flavors.

Exercise benefits the brain, too Regular exercise can benefit the body in many ways, helping men and women maintain healthier weights and lower their risks for developing potentially deadly diseases. Though many people are quick to associate exercise with its physical benefits, those hours spent on the treadmill also can boost brain power. According to Dr. Barry Gordon, professor of neurology and cognitive science at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and coauthor of "Intelligent Memory: Improve the Memory That Makes You Smarter," exercise has a direct impact on the brain. That's because exercise works directly on brain tissue, improving the connections between nerve cells, creating new synapses, growing new neurons and blood vessels, and improving cell energy efficiency. So while many people may begin an exercise regimen with a goal of trimming their waistlines or toning their bodies, they might be happy to know that those physical benefits are accompanied by several cognitive benefits as well. As the American Psychological Association acknowledges, the connection between exercise and mental health is hard to ignore, and the APA notes that the following are just a few of the mental benefits men and women might reap from regular exercise. Improved mood Many people feel great after exercising, especially if that exercise comes at the end of a particularly stressful day. However, those extra laps on the track or those hours spent on the treadmill don't just pay short-term dividends. In a controlled trial overseen by Duke University researcher and clinical psychologist James Blumenthal, sedentary adults with major depressive disorder were assigned into one of four groups: supervised exercise, home-based exercise, antidepressant therapy, or a placebo pill. Those in the exercise and antidepressant groups had higher rates of remission than those in the placebo group, and Blumenthal concluded that exercise was generally comparable to antidepressants for men and women with major depressive disorder. In addition, in following up with patients a year later, Blumenthal found that those who continued to exercise had lower depression scores than those participants who were less active. Blumenthal's study was not the only one to conclude that exercise can have a positive impact on mood. In a review of 11 studies that examined the effects of exercise on mental health, Boston University professor of psychology Michael Otto and his colleagues found that exercise could be a powerful tool when treating clinical depression, and even recommended clinicians include exercise as part of their treatment plans for depressed patients. Some researchers, Otto included, have begun to examine the effects of exercise on treating and possibly preventing anxiety. The body's nervous system responds quickly when people feel frightened or threatened, often causing the body's heart rate to increase and sweating and dizziness to occur. Those people who are especially sensitive to anxiety respond to these feelings with fear, and that makes them more likely to develop panic disorders. But Otto and fellow researcher Jasper Smits of the Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University studied the effects that regular workouts might have on people prone to anxiety. Since exercise produces many of the same physical reactions, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, the body produces when responding to fear or threats, Otto and Smits wanted to determine if exercise might help people prone to anxiety become less likely to panic when experiencing fear or threats. In studying 60 participants withheightened sensitivity to anxiety, Otto and Smits found that the subjects who participated in a two-week exercise program exhibited marked improvements in anxiety sensitivity compared to those participants who did not take part in the exercise program. Otto and Smith concluded that this improvement was a result of the exercise group participants learning to associate the symptoms common to both fear and exercise, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, with something positive (exercise) instead of something negative (anxiety). Regular exercise benefits the human body in numerous ways, not the least of which is its impact on the brain. More information on the link between exercise and improved mental health is available at www.apa.org.
