What Is A Good Credit Score?
I am frequently asked this question. FICO scores can range from 300 to 850. I have seen a lot of credit scores in my career but I have never seen a score of 300 or a score of 850. Below is how credit scores usually range. *760 and above = Excellent *700 – 759 = Great *660 – 699 = Good *620 – 659 = Average *580 – 619 = Poor *Below 579 = Very Poor A good credit score will always be beneficial in getting credit but it may not be the only factor considered by lenders. Your job history, income, and other debts may be considered as well.

Tactful Some of the most tactful people on Earth are our English friends. A British office supervisor once called a secretary in to give her the bad news that she was being fired. He started the conversation with: "Miss Symthe, I really don't know how we're going to get along without you, but starting Monday, we're going to try."

Ever walk into a room with some purpose in mind, only to completely forget what that purpose was? Turns out, doors themselves are to blame for these strange memory lapses. Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame have discovered that passing through a doorway triggers what’s known as an event boundary in the mind, separating one set of thoughts and memories from the next. Your brain files away the thoughts you had in the previous room and prepares a blank slate for the new locale. It’s not aging, it’s the stupid door!

No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you're stuck with. -- Kristen, age 10
A member of the country club asked the lifeguard how he might go about teaching a young lady to swim.
WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED? Twenty-three is the best age b e cause you know the person FOREVER by then. -- Camille, age 10
"It takes considerable time and technique," replied the guard. "First you must take her into the water, then place one arm about her waist, hold her tightly, then take her right arm and raise it very slowly..."
HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED? You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids. -- Derrick, age 8 WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON? Both don't want any more kids. -- Lori, age 8
"This is certainly most helpful," said the member. "I know that my kid sister will appreciate it."
WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE? Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough. -- Lynnette, age 8 (isn't she a treasure)
"Your sister?" asked the lifeguard. "In that case, just push her into the deep end of the pool. She'll learn in a hurry."
On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date. -- Martin, age 10
It just hit me!
WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE? When they're rich. -- Pam, age 7 The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to mess with that. - - Curt, age 7 The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It's the right thing to do. - - Howard, age 8 IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED? It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them. -- Anita, age 9 (bless you child ) HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN'T GET MARRIED? There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn't there? -- Kelvin, age 8 And the #1 Favorite is........ HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK? Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a dump truck. -- Ricky, age 10

My dog sleeps about 20 hours a day. He has his food prepared for him. His meals are provided at no cost to him. He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup, and again during the year, if any medical needs arise. For this he pays nothing, and nothing is required of him. He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is not required to do any upkeep. If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up. He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep. He receives these accommodations absolutely free. He is living like a king, and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever. All of his costs are picked up by others who earn a living. I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a brick.......... My dog is a CONGRESSMAN!

Mark Reid Appointed Lakes Media Network Oxford/ South Hill NC-VA Regional Manager Newly-Created Position Will Maximize Growth of Lakes Media Audience and Revenue (Oxford, NC January 8, 2013) Lakes Media Network (LMN) today announced the appointment of Mark Reid to the position of Oxford/South Hill NC-VA Regional Manager. Effective Monday January 7th, Reid has full operational responsibility for WLUS-FM (Country “US 98.3”/Oxford), WKSK-FM (Classic Hits “Rewind 1019”/ South Hill), WSHV AM-FM (Urban AC “967 WSHV/ South Hill) and TV16/South Hill. Reid will be based in the WLUS/Oxford office building and his responsibilities will include local sales, programming and technical operations. Lakes Media Owner/President Tom Birch commented, “To say it is fortuitous for us to connect with Mark is an understatement. Mark is a Danville VA native who knows the area well and brings 25+ years of sales, programming and managerial broadcast experience to his new position. For the past 9 years, he has been First Media District Manager of the Beckley WV (Country WJLS-FM, Gospel WJLS-AM) and Lexington VA (Classic Hits WWZW-FM, Gospel WREL-AM) operations. Prior to that, his positions have included 4 years as General Sales Manager of Clear Channel's market-leading Country powerhouse WTQR/Greensboro and General and Sales Management positions with Cumulus and Beasley stations in Myrtle Beach SC and Greenville-New Bern NC. Mark’s ‘large/small market’ skill set uniquely qualifies him for this position.” Reid added, “Lakes Media dominates radio and online listening in Southside VA and Northern NC, an area with over $1.5 billion in annual retail sales. Despite their current success, the upside potential of these stations is enormous. I’m excited about leveraging state-of-the-art LMN audience and market research, production and web-based communications resources and I am looking forward to working with Tom and a great LMN team.” The Lakes Media Network consists of WLUS-FM (Country “US 98.3”) Clarksville/Henderson-Oxford-South Boston-South Hill VA-NC ; WKSK-FM (Classic Hits “Rewind 1019”) and WSHV AM-FM (Urban Adult Contemporary “967 WSHV”) South Hill VA; WMPW AM-FM (Country Oldies-formatted “Country Legends 103.7”), WWDN AM-FM (Classic Hits “1045 The Dan”) and Top 40 “AMPMobile.net” Danville VA; and WHLF-FM (Adult Contemporary “95-3 HLF”) South Boston VA. NEW YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE GETS ITS START IN DANVILLE Practice at the Boys & Girls Club in Danville Danville - When over one hundred youth were trying out for only fifteen spots on the G. W. Basketball team, Edward Bennett, a local Danville businessman knew that there were going to be many disappointed young men that were good players. But no matter how good – you can’t squeeze a hundred kids into fifteen slots. That’s when the light bulb went off in Edward Bennett’s head. What if I could build a local league using players that weren’t on the school teams! The timing was more than perfect. Bennett owns Precision Lawn Care and winter months for his business are typically slow. He presented his idea to various local folks. Mr. Kenny Lewis, Principal at E. A. Gibson Middle School, Dave Thomas, Unit Director for the Danville Boys & Girls Club, and Mr. Charles Hodnett, Assistant Director for the program all collaborated with Bennett to make this plan a reality. The program was dubbed “Freshmore Basketball League” as most of the kids were from the freshman and sophomore classes at GW High School. This is an all-volunteer sports program, with volunteers who enjoy the sport, and also enjoy seeing kids succeed. The first tryouts were held with about forty kids showing up. “This was about what I expected,” said Bennett, “and I was happy that could create four teams with that number of players. But by the third tryout, seventy-six kids were playing on six different teams. Most were high school students, but there were several kids that were in Middle School – seventh and
eighth graders who wanted to advance their game. “They can hang,” Bennett laughed, “they can hang with the older players. All these kids are really good players. This is an ideal way for them to sharpen the skills and enjoy their time out of school in a positive environment!” Danville Boys & Girls Club Unit Director volunteers as a coach for the “Purple Warriors” team. When asked why he spends so much of his personal time continuing to serve kids, he said, ‘It’s all about the kids, their quality of life, and their future. It’s all about the kids. I just do what I can do.” Kids are still showing up to make their way onto one of the Freshmore League teams, and no child is turned away! “We will find a spot for everyone.” stated Bennett. The League has been an unprecedented success and we are already planning for growth. Invitations to join the League are extended to all surrounding area schools,
into Caswell and Pittsylvania Counties. Practices are held at the Boys & Girls Club on Foster Street in Danville (right next to E. A. Gibson Middle School) two evenings a week. Games are held on Saturday mornings at G. W. High School through February and then will move to Friday nights in the month of March. These games are called by certified high school official referees. The League is an affiliate of the G. W. Booster Club through their program “Stop the Violence. Save the Youth. Peace in the Streets.” All games are open to the public, with tickets sold at the door : $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children. Concessions are available. Sponsors are needed for this program. Each game costs the organization $350. If you are interested in sponsorship opportunities or have other questions, please contact the Boys & Girls Club in Danville at 434792-6617 ext. 225, or ask for Dave Thomas.

Mrs. Gibbs is survived by her three children; Mrs. Sally Vick and husband H. Russell Vick of Greensboro, NC, Mrs. Susan Cumbey and husband James Lloyd Cumbey of Richmond, VA, and Mr. John C. Gibbs III of Winston-Salem, NC. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family would like to express gratitude to the caring nursing staff at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, and especially to her loving companion and caregiver Sheritta Brooks. Funeral services will be held at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 1:00PM with the Reverend Barry Foster officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Following the burial, a reception will be held in the Evergreen Room at Stratford House.
Mary V. Neil
Mary V. Neil died January 14, 2013, at the age of 100 at her home. On October 1, 2012, she celebrated her centennial bir thday with a party at Stratf o r d House, where she lived for the past 15 years. Friends from that retirement community and her church community were present to help in the celebration, as were her children. A native of Wilmette, Illinois, she lived in the Chicago area until relocating in Danville, Virginia in 1983. Mary was an avid gardner, a dabbler in painting, a dedicated bridge player and enjoyed traveling with her extended family and friends. Ms. Neil was a high school graduate of St. Mary’s Academy at Notre Dame University, where her father was an all American in both track and football. She then attended Northwestern University. While at Northwestern, she was hailed as a beauty queen, and often did some fashion modeling for Marshall Field and Company

in Chicago. After graduation from Northwestern, she married Harry Neil, who pre-deceased her in 1982. She is survived by her daughter, Connie Neil Fletcher (Whitlow) of Danville, her son Bill Neil of Seattle and Bill’s wife, Anita and her son Tom of Sacramento and his wife Tomoko. While in Danville, Mary was active with The Wednesday Club, Project Literacy and worked with Sacred Heart first graders one morning a week, helping them with their reading. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The family would like to give a very special thanks to the caregiver group, Helping Hands, which provided care and companionship to Mary during the last several years of her life. Donations can be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A Memorial Service will be held at Sacred Heart on Friday, January 18, at 11:00 AM. There will be a visitation in the Commons Area of the church from 10 AM-11AM prior to the service. Townes Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the Neil family.

SUPER EASY CROCKPOT GREEN CHILE CHICKEN BREASTS 3-4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, frozen 1 large can Las Palmas green chile enchilada sauce 1 can Campbell’S Cream Of Chicken Soup Monterey Jack (or your choice of cheese) shredded Put enchilada sauce and soup in crockpot and use a whisk to blend well. Add frozen breasts and scoop some sauce over the top to cover them. Cook on low all day. Serve over rice, noodles, tortillas, etc. Sprinkle cheese over the top. May have to microwave for several seconds to encourage the cheese to melt. This super easy recipe is perfect for us busy people and fills the house with wonderful smells. Note: Awesome recipe and so easy! Started the slower with the 3 ingredients at 8am. By 6pm I had an excellent enchilada filling and sauce. Took the chicken breasts out, shredded the meat, rolled it in flour tortillas with some shredded Mexican cheese blend. Made about 8 large enchiladas. Placed in a baking dish and pored most of the leftover sauce on top. Baked at 325°F for about 10- 15 minutes to melt cheese! My new favorite!
RED VELVET CAKE SUPER MOIST 1 box butter flavored cake mix 1 bottle red food color 3 eggs 1 stick butter (half melted in microwave) 1 cup whole milk or buttermilk 1/4 cup sugar 1 tsp. vanilla flavor
Preheat Oven 325°F. Grease and flour 3 8-inch cake pans. Combine all ingredients in mixing bowl and beat on medium speed for 4 minutes. Divide batter and spread evenly in the 3 pans. Bake approximately 20 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Turn each cake out onto a paper towel to cool. Frosting: 2 8 oz. blocks of cream cheese 2 sticks of butter (1/2 lb) 3/4 bag powdered sugar of 2 lb. bag (1 1/2 lbs.) For heavy duty mixer, put cream cheese and butter in bowl. Beat until smooth, add powdered sugar, a small amount at a time until about 3/4 of bag is used. You may optionally add chopped pecans chopped to the frosting, if desired. ** Always frost each layer face down with bottom facing up; this makes a smooth and perfectly shaped cake.
