Danville Regional Medical Center Dedicates and Names The Michael A. Moore, MD, Clinical Education Center Bubba and Johnny Ray, two good ole boys from North Carolina, were sitting' on the front porch drinking beer when a large truck hauling rolls and rolls of sod went by. "I'm gonna do that when I win the lottery," said Bubba. "Do what?" asked Johnny Ray. "Send my grass out to be mowed," answered Bubba.
Mrs. Smith, an elderly woman, went into the doctor's office. When the doctor asked why she was there, she replied, "I'd like to have some birth control pills." Quite surprised, the doctor thought for a minute and then said, "Excuse me, Mrs. Smith, but you're 75 years old. What possible use could you have for birth control pills?" The woman responded, "They help me sleep better." The doctor thought some more and continued, "How in the world do birth control pills help you to sleep?"
DANVILLE, VA., February 20, 2013 — Officials at Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC) recently announced the dedication and naming of the new Michael A. Moore, MD, Clinical Education Center, formerly the hospital’s “H” (West Area) Building. “The contributions Dr. Moore has made to our Graduate and Continuing Medical Education programs, our patients, hospital and community are tremendous,” said Eric Deaton, DRMC Chief Executive Officer. “In renaming this building we honor Dr. Moore’s leadership and his vision; we honor his commitment to providing the highest level of graduate and continuing medical education available.” Dr. Michael A. Moore, FACP, FAHA, FASH, an internist/nephrologist who has specialized in hypertension management and developing preventive cardiovascular health programs, has been a member of the DRMC Medical Staff since 1979. He was also a nephrologist at the Danville Urologic Clinic (now Southside Urology and Nephrology) for 21 years. In 2008, Dr. Moore was asked to develop an osteopathic medical residency program at DRMC. Working with hospital administration, Dr. Gary Miller and the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, three DRMC residency programs (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and a Traditional Rotating Internship) were developed and were approved by the American Osteopathic Association in 2009. Dr. Moore is married to Janet Middleton Moore. They have two children, David Moore (Harrisburg, PA) and Dr. Allan Moore (1977-2008); and one five year old granddaughter, Grace Helen Moore.

Industrial Development Authority approves 30 downtown parking spaces The Danville Industrial Authority voted unanimously Thursday morning to create 30 public parking spaces in a lot located between First Citizens Bank and the former Downtowner Motor Inn on Main Street. City officials believe the spaces will provide relief for citizens who shop in that section of the River District. Additional means of relief will be addressed following completion of a parking study for the River District. The study began this week, and consultants expect to complete it in six weeks. Thursday’s vote by the IDA to create 30 parking spaces came after seven members of Danville City Council attended the meeting and voiced support for the move. The IDA purchased the privately owned lot last year during demolition of the Downtowner. To create the 30 spaces, the IDA will need to use about 15 feet of space of the Downtowner lot. Any decision on the use of the remainder of the Downtowner lot, which features a steep drop in grade, will be postponed until completion of the parking study. “I don’t think we need to make a major decision on the use of the lower lot at this time,” IDA Chairman Richard Turner said during the meeting. “Maybe it needs to sit there for a while longer.” The future use of the Downtowner lot has been subject of considerable debate. City Manager Joe King noted, “Passions are strong on this (topic) – park vs. parking. Proceed with the 30 spaces (on the upper lot), but you are better advised to wait for the parking study before making a decision on the lower lot.” With Thursday’s vote, city officials will draft specifications and seek bids on the construction. That process will take eight to 10 weeks, with construction beginning in late April or early May. The lot could be ready for use in late June or early July. The money to pay for construction will come from the budget used for demolition of the Downtowner. The demolition project was nearly a yearlong process that began 13 months ago with removal of asbestos. Demolition took place during the summer. The project ended with construction of a retaining wall and grading in the fall and early winter. The Downtowner was constructed in 1963 at the corner of Main and Union streets, which at the time was Danville’s busiest intersection. The seven-story hotel featured 116 rental rooms, including a rooftop penthouse, and 15 meeting rooms. Two eight-passenger elevators served the building. The Main Street entrance led to a restaurant, a nightclub and commercial tenant spaces. An underground area was set aside for valet parking. The building closed in 1986. Because of its high visibility and the more than two decades that it stood empty, the building became a focal point for blight eradication and redevelopment in the River District. In addition to demolition of the Downtowner, a streetscape project along Main Street began last year. The project features wider sidewalks, installation of brick pavers and creation of more visible and safer pedestrian crossings. It also will provide amenities such as outdoor café space, trees, benches and new lighting. Land Planning & Design Associates designed the streetscape project. LPDA is a Virginia-based landscape architecture and planning consulting firm. This firm also has drafted design concepts for the future use of the Downtowner lot. LPDA presented those concepts Thursday to the IDA board and members of City Council in attendance. The concepts offered options for parking and a green space park. “There could be infinite variations of these options,” King said. “Let’s put them on the shelf and wait for the parking study.” On Wednesday night, the city held a public forum to outline the scope of the parking study, introduce the consultants conducting the study, and allow citizens to share their ideas and concerns. The city selected LPDA and Carl Walker Inc. as consultants for the study. Carl Walker Inc. is an engineering and parking consulting firm that has clients nationwide. The company has eight offices across the nation, including offices in Atlanta. The study not only will address current parking conditions, but it will help the city to plan how best to meet future parking needs. The consultants will inventory and analyze the parking situation, and then present their findings and recommend strategies and goals to address key questions. Key questions include what are the current parking resources and how they are being used, what does the future hold and how can the city plan to meet parking needs and manage those needs. The study will look at the expected patterns of new development, the likely mix of new construction vs. re-use of existing buildings, and how the dynamics will change over time.

Dan River Region Collaborative Asks Congressional Leaders to Support ‘Middle Skills’ The Dan River Region Collaborative recently participated in the 2013 Skills Summit in Washington, D.C. where participants asked members of Congress to support policies and investments in skill development, enabling more businesses to find the skilled workers they need to compete globally, and so all workers can share in and contribute to our country’s economic prosperity.
“Even with high unemployment, our employers face difficulties finding qualified workers in the middle – jobs that require more than a high school diploma but not a fouryear degree,” Brown explained. “We shared this message with members of Congress to help them recognize that federallyfunded workforce devel-
opment programs that engage employers, lead to industry-recognized credentials, and directly link training with jobs are part of the solution to the skills gap and full economic recovery.” While in DC, the Virginia delegation met with Congressman Robert Hurt and the staffs of Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, and Representatives Morgan Griffith, Eric Cantor, Bobby Scott, and Jim Moran. “We appreciate the interest and willingness of our Congressional representatives and staff to learn more about the challenges that face our employers and our job seekers,” Moran said.

NASCAR If for no other reason to be pleased about the Gen 6 cars, little to no tandem racing in the Sprint Unlimited last Saturday evening. Though I am not a big fan of pack racing, the pack far outweighs nose to tail for 400 of the 500 miles for the last two Daytona 500s. As Joey Logano said prior to the Sprint Unlimited, the true test of the Gen 6 cars will happen over the next several weeks as we visit the intermediate tracks. Right now the cars look good, they have tested well, and the drivers feel that this is a solid vehicle. The first true sustained test under race conditions for this vehicle comes in the Duels Thursday afternoon and this should give us a good idea of what to expect in the Daytona 500. Finally the Hedrick engines have come out of the gate strong as Stewart-Haas driver, Danica Patrick sets on the pole for the 500 and Jeff Gordon is on the outside pole. Thomas Edgar Tuck
Mr. Thomas Edgar Tuck, age 77, of 321 Carter Lodge Road, Blairs, VA, died on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born on March 19, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, VA, to the late Zack Tuck and Maxie Neal Tuck. Mr. Tuck worked at Columbia Forest Products in Chatham as a saw operator before his retirement in 2003. He was a member of Shermont Baptist Church. Mr. Tuck was well known for his music and he was a recording artist. In addition, he was a registered barber. He married Linda Neal Tuck on June 11, 1955. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Linda Neal Tuck, of the residence; sisters: Dorothy Hines, of Pittsville and Annie Tucker, of Auburn Care in Altavista; sisterin-law: Romona Tuck, of Gretna; a special, special friend: Clyde Bean, of Pelham, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Mr. Tuck was predeceased by two brothers: George and Calvin Tuck and two sisters: Elsie and Hazel Tuck. Funeral services were conducted at 2 pm on Friday, February 15, 2013 at Shermont Baptist Church with Rev. Ryan Riley officiating. Swicegood Funeral Service is respectfully serving the Tuck family.
Clarence Oliver “Jim” Stowe
Clarence Oliver “Jim” Stowe, age 78, of 136 Hunter Street, Danville, VA, died on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. He was born on August 12, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, VA, to the late Major G. Stowe and Odessa Grant Stowe. Mr. Stowe worked doing home improvements such as installing vinyl siding, and he was of the Methodist faith. He spent most of his life in the Danville area and he had been a patient at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home for the past two days. He is survived by his wife Jeanette Loftis Stowe, of the residence; one son:
Clarence Oliver Stowe, Jr., of Martinsville, VA; one daughter: Barbara Stowe, of Danville, VA; three brothers: Vernon Stowe, of Danville, VA, Troy Stowe, of South Boston, and Major Stowe, Jr., of Dry Fork, VA; one sister: Nancy Oakes, of Dry Fork, VA; two granddaughters: Chelsey Marie Stowe and Mary Beth Blalock, both of Danville, VA; seven stepgrandchildren; and two step-children. In addition to his parents Mr. Stowe was predeceased by one brother: Dennis Stowe and one step-child. Mr. John R. Scearce, age 82, of formerly of Danville, VA, died on February 13, 2013 at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville, VA. Mr. Scearce was born on January 28, 1931 in Danville, VA to the late Daniel Scearce and Isabella Barbour Scearce. Mr. Scearce retired from Dan River Mills after 35 years, and he was a member of the Mt. Herman Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U S Army where served from 19511953 as an Army Sgt. in the Tank Division. Mr. Scearce is survived by his daughter Johnna Chambers and her husband David of Pelham, NC; two brothers: Raymond Scearce and Willie Scearce, both of Danville; two sisters: Florence Merricks and Charlotte Dodson, both of Danville; and his grandson Lester Chambers, of Pelham, NC. In addition to his parents Mr. Scearce was predeceased by his wife, Essie Scearce; one brother: Daniel Scearce; and one sister: Mary Hundley. Graveside Funeral services were conducted at 2 pm on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Danville Memorial Gardens with Rev. Danny Davis officiating. Irene Tate Wiles
Irene Tate Wiles, 100, died Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the Riverside Health Care Center after being in declining health for one month. She had been a resident at Riverside Health Care since November of 2010. Mrs. Wiles was born on January 3, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, VA, a daughter of the late Clem Reed Tate and Ollie Hall Tate. She lived her entire life in the Rocksprings community of Pittsylvania County and she worked for the Pittsylvania County School System in the Cafeteria and later in the Snack Shop in the Memorial Hospital until the age of 82. She was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church and enjoyed cooking, gardening and working in her yard. On November 27, 1938 she married Vann Odell Wiles who died on August 21, 1971. Survivors include a son, Sanford Vann Wiles, Sr., and wife Mary, of Ringgold, VA; a sister, Margaret T. Wilkerson, of Ringgold; two grandchildren, Audra J. Keen, and husband Mark, of Alton, VA, and Vann Wiles, Jr., and wife Suzanne, of Ringgold; and four great grandchildren, Caleb Keen, Cayla Keen, Caitlyn Wiles and Sabrina Wiles. She was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Allen Mahan and the Reverend Steve Weedling officiating. Memorials may be made to the Kentuck Volunteer Fire Department, 200 Ringgold Church Road, Ringgold, VA 24586. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is serving the Wiles family.
Wadie Lewis Fitzgerald
Wadie Lewis Fitzgerald, 73, of 1355 Piney Forest Rd., Danville, VA, died, Monday, February 11, 2013 at his residence.
Born May 6, 1939 in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Herley Lee and Clara Mae Lovelace Fitzgerald. He was married to the late Cleophia Fitzgerald. Survivors include one sister, Mildred Wilson of Baltimore, MD and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 12 Noon from Bibleway Cathedral with Apostle Lawrence G. Campbell officiating. Zelma Mae Jones Gilbert
Mrs. Zelma Mae Jones Gilbert of 1818 North Main Street, Danville, died early Friday morning, February 15, 2013 at her residence after a decline in health since November 2012. Mrs. Gilbert was born on October 3, 1920 in Danville, a daughter of the late Robert Green Jones and the late Cora Alice Yeatts Jones. She had lived her entire life in Danville where she was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church and attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church. She loved being with her family. On October 1, 1938, she was married to George “Jack” Birge Gilbert, Jr., who predeceased her on December 4, 1978. Mrs. Gilbert is survived by three children, Alice G. Guppy and husband, Jerry of Great Falls, Va., Robert J. Gilbert and wife, Gail of Warrenton, Va. and Susan G. Hardemon and husband, Steve of Richmond, one sister, Ruby C. Jones of Danville, Va. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Linda G. Matney, a son, George B. Gilbert III, two brothers, Russell R. Jones and Ray Yeatts Jones. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, February 18, 2013 from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Myron Bruce and the Reverend Joe Beck officiating. Flossie Louise Lowe Howard, 84, formerly of 156 Sherwood Drive, Danville, VA died Wednesday, February 13, 2013 while a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had previously resided with her niece, Vickie Elwart of 716 Pinecroft Rd, Danville for eighteen months, Born June 22, 1928 in Seaboard, VA, she was the daughter of the late Polly Nipper Lowe Laws and the late Whitt Lowe. She was formerly employed with Dan River, Inc. for forty four years and was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Danville. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, and a very special friend, Diane Adkerson. She was the last surviving member of her generation. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Fannie Lowe, Frances Lowe; her brothers; Lacy Forrest Lowe, Larry Frazier Lowe and Benjamin Franklin Lowe, Sr.; and her half-brother, Luther Lowe. Raymond Claude Rigney, 84, formerly of 303 Freeze Road, Danville, VA died Saturday, February 16, 2013
while a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, Danville. Born August 30, 1928 in Roanoke, VA, he was the son of the late Josephine Abdell Rigney and the late Claude Abbott Rigney. After the death of his mother, Raymond was reared by a beloved uncle and aunt, Jesse and Pattie Dodd Rigney. He attended Whitmell High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He later retired as a manufacturing supervisor from Lefiell Manufacturing in Santa Fe Springs, CA after 29 years of service with them. In his spare time, Mr. Rigney loved to hunt, fish and prospect for gold. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bettie Giles Rigney, of the residence; two sons: Randall K. Rigney and wife, Karen of Lakewood, CA and Timothy R. Rigney of Danville; three grandchildren: Rachel Ann Rigney and Adam Thomas Rigney of Lakewood, CA and Timothy R. Rigney, Jr. of Tobyhanna, PA; and one great-granddaughter, Nora Dakota Rigney of PA. In addition, he is survived by one brother in law, Calvin Giles and wife, Kay of Blairs, VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Leigh Rigney. Sarah Harward Walton Barker, 99, of 1437 Mead owview Dr., Danville, VA died Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after being in declining health for the past six months. Born February 4, 1914 in Anson, NC, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Betsy Harward. She retired after 34 years from Dan River Mills, Inc. where she worked as a weaver and she was the last surviving member of Old Mountain Primitive Baptist Church. Sarah was blessed with many talents that she enjoyed sharing with others. She had a love of flowers, gardening, basket weaving, painting and quilting, becoming known as the “Quilt Lady” of Callahans Hill, having quilted more than 300 quilts. On November 25, 1939 she married to Quincey James Walton, who died August 6, 1966. She later married Ballard Barker who predeceased her November 27, 1975. Sarah is survived by a son, Dr. Geary Walton, and wife JoAnn, of Hickory, NC; four daughters, Darlene Bass, and husband Ray, of Chester, VA, Florence Giles, and husband Russell, of Danville, Nancy Carpenter, and husband Tim, of Danville, and Sarah Welch, and husband Steve, of Blairs, VA; a daughterin-law, Sandy Walton, of Colonial Heights, VA; a sister, Nancy Vannoy, of Hudson, NC; a sister-inlaw, Lillian Powell, of Whitmell, VA; 15 grandchildren, Jim Walton, Shanna Miles, Brad Giles, Greg Giles, Jeff Giles, Tim Carpenter, II, Joe Carpenter, Kathy Oswald, Sandy Rubin, Kevin Walton, Michele Crain, Chad Bass, Andrea Clough, Misty Brown and Scott McBride; and 26 great grandchildren. Sergeant First Class Thomas James Francis Palmer, 67, of 115 Davis Drive, Danville went to his heavenly home after an illness caused by being sprayed with Agent Orange in Vietnam on Sunday, February 17, 2013, while a patient at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville. Born December 16, 1945 in Binghamton, NY, he was the son of the late Betty Mulderig and the late Albert Palmer. He was married to Priscilla Henry Palmer, who survives, of the residence. He retired from the U.S. Army where he received numerous awards and decorations, including: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Driver and Mechanic Badge (Mechanic), Overseas Service Bars (2), Bronze Star Medal, Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Medal Second Class, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (3). Sergeant Palmer was active in the community. He coached Danville Little League, was a former member of the Blue Knights, a member of American Legion Post 1097 and the PTSD group in Danville. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Cooties and Commander and Quartermaster of VFW Ballard Pruitt post 647, where he was a life member. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Vera-Lee Chumley and husband, Cecil; three sons: William James Palmer, Donald Duane Henry and Clifton Everette Henry; three sisters: Kathy Parcelle, Lynn Arnold, and Nancy Bailey; a brother, Bill Palmer; six grandchildren: Cami-Jo Chumley, Crystal-Lea Chumley, Peyton Palmer, Amy Palmer, Miranda Palmer, and Alisa Blake Fowlkes; and five great-grandchildren: love of his life, Jazlyn “Jazzy” and Landon Thomas Henry, Camden Joel Chumley, Holley Gayle Shelton and Leiand Michael Palmer. Born September 25, 1948 in Utica, New York, he was a son of the late Donald Robert Walker and Martha Walker. He had been a resident of Sutherlin, VA for the past seventeen years and retired from Shorewood Packaging where he had worked in the Maintenance Department. He loved gardening and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. He is survived by his mother, of Brookfield, NY; a son, Daniel C. Walker, and wife Mary, of New Hartford, NY; a daughter, Tracy A. Pork Chops With Caramelized Onionmushroom Sauce Ingredients 4 boneless pork chops flour salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste 6 medium fresh mushrooms, sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 1 medium yellow onions, sliced and separated 1 (14 1/2 ounce) cans beef broth 1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon dried parsley 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1/4 cup half-and-half (optional) 1 -2 tablespoon cornstarch (optional) 1 bay leaves (optional) Directions Season chops with flour, salt and pepper. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in cast iron skillet over medium-high heat; sauté chops until golden brown. Remove. Add onions and lightly brown. Remove. Add 1 tablespoons unsalted butter; when melted, add mushrooms. Remove and de-glaze skillet with 1/3 cup beef broth or wine, if preferred. Pour remaining beef broth into crock pot. Page 2 of 2Pork Chops With Caramelized Onionmushroom Sauce (cont.) Add sauce from skillet, Worcestershire and spices; add chops, onions and mushrooms. Cover and cook on LOW heat setting for 7-8 hours, until very tender. EXTRACT BAY LEAF. Turn temperature to HIGH; add 1 tablespoons butter. Mix cornstarch with Half and Half. Whisk to blend well. Add to crock pot and whisk. Cook for an additional 15-20 minutes(depending on sauce thickness preferred). Serve over cooked rice.
QUICK APPLE TURNOVER 3 apples, peeled and diced 3 cans Crescent rolls 3/4 c. brown sugar 3 tbsp. flour 3/4 tsp. cinnamon pinch of ginger dash of nutmeg
GLAZE TOPPING: 2 tsp. warm milk a drop of vanilla 1/2 c. powdered sugar Combine last 4 ingredients and mix with diced apples. Separate Crescent rolls; place a large tablespoon of apple mixture in each roll and fold over each side (a diaper fold). Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes (cold oven) or for 10-15 minutes in a preheated oven. Drizzle topping over each roll while still hot. Adjust icing to pouring consistency by adding more sugar if it’s too thin or more milk if it’s too thick.
