My name is Michael. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife. When I retired a few years ago, it became necessary for Carol Anne to get a full-time job, along with her part-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed. Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the golf club about the same time she gets home from work.

Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men's Grill at the club, so eating out is not reasonable. I'm ready for some home-cooked grub when I hit that door. She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now it's not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner.

I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed. Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But, Boys, we take 'em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two, or even three days. That way, she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points. When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half-finished mowing the yard. I try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me, too. I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support my wife. I'm not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, Guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other. EDITOR'S NOTE: Michael died suddenly on January 31 of a perforated rectum. The police report says he was found with a Calloway extra-long 50-inch Big Bertha Driver II golf club lodged in his rear end, with barely 5 inches of grip showing, and a sledge hammer laying nearby. His wife was arrested and charged with murder. The all-woman jury took only 10 minutes to find her Not Guilty, accepting her defense that Michael, somehow without looking, accidentally sat down on his golf club.

I don’t want to be disrespectable, but Dale Jarrett’s selection into NASCAR’s Hall of Fame last week was not only a surprise….but much too soon. I’m not implying that Jarrett lacks the necessary credentials for induction, but to go in on the first ballot over two-time premier series champion Joe Weatherly and early pioneer Curtis Turner seemed pointless and out of order. Jarrett joins Tim Flock, Maurice Petty, Fireball Roberts and Jack Ingram as the newest Hall members that will be inducted on January 29. Flock led the inductees with 76 percent of the vote, followed by Petty (67%), Jarrett (56%), Ingram (53%) and Roberts (51%). Jarrett’s popularity as an ESPN booth analyst most likely figured in on the fan voting, which generates one vote. The top five fan voters were (listed in alphabetically order) Richard Childress, Rick Hendrick, Jarrett, Benny Parsons and Roberts. Jarrett was the 1999 NASCAR Cup champion and a three-time Daytona 500 winner. He retired with 32 NASCAR Sprint Cup and 11 NASCAR Nationwide Series wins, his first in August 1986 at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, NC. There are lots of drivers, car owners, mechanics and track owners who are worthy of Hall of Fame honors. Logic tells me that the five inductees should come from the 25 nominees that have been selected. Two drivers – Rusty Wallace and Jarrett – have been chosen the first time out. While both have Hall of Fame credentials, logic also tells me their induction should come a little further down the line. Apparently, inductees are chosen on popularity and to increase interest among the newer NASCAR fan base. If that’s the determining factor – and that looks to be the case -- then the 54-member Hall of Fame Voting Panel got it right.

AFA Chapter 240 Teacher of the Year
Mrs. Melinda Wallace has been selected as the Air Force Association Chapter 240 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Wallace currently teaches seventh and eighth grade physical science and life science in the academically gifted program at O. T. Bonner Middle School. As a recipient of this award, Mrs. Wallace is recognized for achievements in exciting K-12 students about science and math. She prepares students to both use and contribute to the technologies of tomorrow. Mrs. Wallace leads the way in implementing and aligning the new Standards of Learning in the area of science at the middle school level. She works tirelessly to lead her colleagues in monthly share sessions held across the division. She always has innovative ideas to impact instruction across the curriculum. As this year’s AFA Chapter Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Wallace was presented with a cash award, a certificate of excellence, an AFA tote bag, and a complimentary Civil Air Patrol Aerospace Education membership (sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol). Mrs. Wallace was presented her award on Monday, May 20th at Bonner Middle School.

Horace Eugene “Harvey” “Rob” Robinson
Horace Eugene “Harvey” “Rob” Robinson, 81, of 501 Daisy Payne Lane, Dry Fork, VA died Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. He was born December 28, 1931 in Shelby, NC to the late Hattie Harvey Robinson and the late James Robinson. Mr. Robinson attended grade school at Whitmell Farm Life School and high school in New Kent, VA and Richmond, VA. He proudly served his country in the US Air Force – serving a tour of duty in Japan, and then transferring to Korea in the early stages of the Korean War. He married his sweetheart from Idaho, Shirley Jean Runger Robinson in 1955. They were married for 49 years. She preceded him in death in December of 2004. Mr. Robinson worked as a supervisor with the US Dept. of Agriculture, retiring after 40 years of service. Mr. Robinson is survived by his sister-in-law Joan Woods and her husband Joe, of Nampa, ID; his niece Michelle Woods, her husband Albert Schmalz, and their two children, also of Nampa, ID; his nephew Colonel Michael Woods, his wife Lisa and their two children, of Boise, ID. A graveside service was held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Highland Burial Park, Danville, VA with Rev. Mike Hearp officiating. Mr. James “Jimmie” James, Jr., age 89 of 518 North Main Street, Danville, died at Danville Regional Medical center on Wednes-
day, May 22, 2013 after a decline in health for five years. Mr. James was born on April 17, 1924 in Danville, a son of the late James Monroe James, Sr. and the late Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Mitchell James. He had lived most of his life in Danville where he was employed by Goodwill Industries until his retirement. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church. He was married to Eunice Weatherford James, who predeceased him on September 26, 2009. Mr. James is survived by two sons, Dennis M. James and Douglas L. James both of Danville, five grandchildren, Christy Whitlow and husband, Ricky, Michael James and wife, Lindsay, Melissa Arnold and husband, Greg, Douglas L. James, Jr. and wife, Dana and Elizabeth Bernard. Also surviving are nine great grandchildren. Mr. James was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers. Mr. Albert Lee Saunders, 71, of 246 Gay Street, died at his residence on Monday, May 20, 2013. Born in Danville on March 19, 1942, he was the son of the late Joseph Saunders and Mary Hall Saunders. He was a member of Prospect Baptist Church and he had worked for Dan River, Inc. He is survived by two brothers, James Saunders and his wife, Oprah, of Danville, and Barby Saunders and his wife, Antoinette, of Compton, CA; two sisters, Odaris Walton of Yanceyville, NC and Catherine Moore of Danville. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Saunders were held on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mary Ann Bowman, age 76, of Danville, VA, died on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Wheatland Hills, in Radford, VA. Mrs. Bowman was born on October 14, 1936, in Danville to the late John B. Shackelford and Lossie Mae Holcolm Shackelford. She was a graduate of Brosville High School and a member of Melville Avenue Baptist Church. She was an awesome home-maker, a girl scout leader, she loved sewing and crafts, and spending time with her family. She loved Christmas best and will sorely be missed.
Mrs. Bowman is survived by one son, Bruce Bowman; three daughters, Pat Bowman of Danville, Dee Deaton-Lewis and husband Todd of Dublin, VA, and Monya Manion and husband David of Amhurst, VA; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donnie Shackelford and wife Ann, Phillip Shackelford and wife Peggy, and Lundy Shackelford and wife Donna; and two sisters, Gerolean and husband Jesse Hardy, and Hazel Uncer. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Larry Burton Bowman, Sr., one grandchild Burt Bowman III; three sisters; and seven brothers. He was veteran of the United States Army. David Lee Cassell, 81, of 180 Blair Lane, Keeling, VA passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at his home after a decline in health for several years. Born in Bassett, VA, Mr. Cassell was the son of the late Josie Leigh Light Cassell and the late Ellis Estridge Cassell. Mr. Cassell was married to Barbara “Bobbi” Ingram Cassell, who survives, of the residence. He was a retiree of Dan River, Inc, where he worked as a Supervisor. Evelyn Mae Ricketts Stamer, 68, of 460 Pinecrest Dr., Danville, died Saturday, May 25, 2013, while a patient at Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg, VA. Mrs. Stamer was born on February 2, 1945 to the late Colleen Farthing Ricketts and the late William Harvey “Billy” Ricketts, Jr. She was married to Karl H. Stamer, of the residence. Mrs. Stamer was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Choir. She was also a member of VFW Post 647 Women’s Auxiliary. After working for 26 years, Mrs. Stamer retired from her position as a Bus Driver for Pittsylvania County Schools. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Stamer is survived by two daughters, Angela H. Oakes and Billy of Danville and Cindy H. Dowdy and David of Ringgold, VA.; one son, Randy G. Hedrick and wife, Tracy of Iva, SC; one stepdaughter, Melissa S. Cook and Lynn of Walnut Cove, NC; one stepson, Karl H. Stamer, II of Clearwater, FL; two sisters, Judy R. Rogers of Blairs, VA and Jean “Mamie” R. Hinton of Keeling, VA; two brothers, H.T. Shirley Ludwick Scearce
August 8, 1936 - May 25, 2013 Shirley Ludwick Scearce was granted her angel wings on May 25, 2013 after a sudden but brief illness. Her final days were spent surrounded by her family and friends who loved and cared for her very deeply. She was born August 8, 1936 to George Thomas Ludwick and Bernice Ball Ludwick. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, James Basil Scearce; her son, Jeffrey Blane Scearce and his wife Sharon; her daughter, Tracey Scearce Adkerson and her husband Richard; and one granddaughter, Blaine Alexandra Adkerson who was truly the joy of her life. She is also survived by one sister, Mildred (Peggy) Ludwick Mowery and her husband Dave, nieces, nephews, extended family, and the many children whose lives she touched along the way. She is predeceased by her parents and six brothers and sisters: George Thomas Ludwick, Jr., Louis Benton Ludwick, Margaret Ludwick Lee, Thelma (Jean) Ludwick Talley, Ann Ludwick Honeycutt, and Dorothy Ludwick Shotwell. Shirley was a loving wife, devoted mother and proud Gandi to Blaine. She was a member of Sandy Shores Baptist Church. She was a school crossing guard at G.L.H. Johnson Elementary School for many years. She loved fishing and helping family and friends in whatever way possible. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Roy Barrett
Roy Barrett, age 88, of 4002 Pittwood Drive, Danville, Virginia died Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Chatham Health and Rehab Center after a decline in health since February. Born in Huntersville, TX, he was a son of the late Hubert Redding Barrett and Maggie Alphin Barrett. Mr. Barrett spent his most of his life in Texas retiring from Brown & Root where he was an Instrumentation Engineer and then he moved to Danville in 1984. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and was a member of Hunters Lodge # 156 A.F. & A.M. On December 30, 1948, he married Evelyn Rowland Barrett, who predeceased him. Mr. Barrett was the last survivor of his generation being predeceased by one brother, Hugh Rowland Barrett, four sisters, Ina Ora Barrett, Altha Barrett Johnston, Bobbie Barrett Jolly and Billie Barrett Gray. Survivors include a number of Nieces and Nephews. Graveside services were held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the Mausoleum of Danville Memorial Gardens. The family would like to give a special thanks to the nurses and staff of Chatham Health and Rehab for the excellent care given to their love one. Helen Gebhart Calloway, 84, of Abingdon Place Danville, VA died Sunday, May 26, 2013. Born on September 27, 1928, in New Castle, DE, a daughter of the late Chandler Harlan Gebhart and Mary Fagan Gebhart.
Mrs. Calloway spent most of her life in the Washington, DC area where she worked as an Executive Secretary for the FDIC. She was of the Episcopal Faith. Survivors include a son, James Richard Calloway, Jr. (Kathy) of Ashburn, VA; a daughter, Susan C. Posig (James) of Semora, NC; two sisters, Mimi Durham (Walt) of Wilmington, DE; Betts Carpenter, of New Castle, DE; three grandchildren, David and Brian Calloway, Mike Swann (Maria); two great-grandchildren, Michael and Emily Swann. Mrs. Lois Lee Pruitt Gunn, age 78 of 1340 Worsham Mill Road, Ruffin, N.C., died Monday, May 27, 2013 at Anne Penn Hospital, Reidsville, N.C. after a brief illness. Mrs. Gunn was born on January 7, 1935 in Caswell County, N.C., a daughter of the late Henry Pruitt and the late Addie Jones Pruitt. She had lived most of her life in the Danville and Reidsville area. She was employed by Dan River Inc. for forty four years in #4B Weave. She was a member of Westover Baptist Church. On September 17, 1963, she married Eugene “Junior” Gunn, who survives. In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by two sons, E. Raine Gunn, III, and wife, Penny of Magnolia, Texas, Mark Gunn and wife, Sidney of Lynchburg, Va., one sister, Linda Kerney of Burlington, N.C., one brother, Carlton Pruitt and wife, Carolyn of Elon, N.C., seven grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Gladys Cates. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00, pm Thursday, May 30, 2013 from Westover Baptist Church with the Rev. She was the last survivor of her generation. How Available Credit Impacts Your Score This week I received a letter from a credit card company stating that a credit card I have has been inactive for over a year. This is a department store credit card with a high interest rate so I do not use it often. The letter stated that if I want to maintain my current credit limit on this card I need to use it by a designated date. I would not want this to occur because if my limit is lowered that will lessen the amount of credit that is available to me and could possibly lower my score. Your credit capacity is the second largest impact on your credit score. To avoid this action I will use the credit card for a small purchase and then pay off my balance when I receive the bill. Your creditor may also lower your credit limit if you are not making your payments on time. In order to keep your credit score in good standing keep your credit card balances low and make your payments on time.

Garlic Fried Chicken (2) 2 1/2 pound frying chickens cut in pieces 2 tablespoon of lemon juice 1 cup of sour cream 1 clove of garlic, grated 1/4 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon of salt 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper 1/4 teaspoon of celery salt Wipe the chicken pieces with a damp cloth and store in container with tight fitting lid. Mix all ingredients together, pour over chicken, and let marinate in the refrigerator overnight. When ready to fr y, drain the liquid from the chicken pieces and dredge them in flour, heat some vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium he at and brown the chicken pieces on all sides. Lower the heat and cover skillet and cook for 35 -40 minutes Nine Day Slaw 3 pounds of cabbage, shredded 1 chopped green pepper 2 small onions, sliced 1 cup of sugar 1 cup of vinegar 1 cup of vegetable oil 2 teaspoons of salt 2 teaspoons of dry mustard Mix the sugar, vinegar, vegetable oil, salt, and the dry mustard together in a saucepan and bring to a boil. In a large bowl mix the shredded cabbage, chopped green pepper, and the sliced onions together and pour the hot liquid mixture over the vegetables. Mix well and place in the refrigerator overnight. This slaw will “keep” for up to nine days. Cat Head Biscuits (as big as a cat’s head) 2 cups of flour 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda 2 teaspoons of baking powder 1 teaspoon of salt 5 tablespoons of lard or shortening About 1 cup of buttermilk Sift the dry ingredients together and cut in the lard or s hortening. Add enough buttermilk to make a soft dough. Pinch off about a lemon sized ball of dough for each biscuit and pat ou t with your hands. Bake for 12 – 15 minutes at 450 degrees or until the tops are golden brown. Remove the biscuits form the oven and rub butter on the tops of the hot biscuits to coat. Busy Day Drop Cookies Thoroughly cream : 1/2 C. shortening and 1 C. brown sugar Sift together: 1 3/4 C. sifted flour, 1/2 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. soda, and 1/2 tsp. salt. Stir these dry ingredients into creamed mixture alternately with 1/4 C. sour milk to which has been add 1 beaten egg and 1 tsp. vanilla. Blend in raisins or 3/4 C. chopped nuts. Drop by teaspoon about 3" apart on greased baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven 350 deg. for about 12 minutes. Makes 3 1/2 dozen.

Do you ever wish you got more in your mailbox than bills and junk mail? I think all of us do! I’m going to tell you how you can make your trips to the mailbox a little more exciting with things like free samples and mail in rebates. Free samples are a great way to get free stuff AND high value coupons. Many free samples come with coupons inside, and you can use those later to get a good deal on the product. But, even if you don’t get a coupon it’s nice to get something for free. I often get samples sizes of beauty and hygiene products that are great for travel. You can sign up for most types of free samples online. A few good places to find them are Target’s Sample Spot, Walmart’s Free Samples and Savings page, and All You Magazine’s daily free sample email, and Facebook. If you are getting into couponing, and especially if you plan on signing up for free samples, I suggest you use an email address that is just for that purpose. You will most likely receive emails from the brands and companies that offer the free samples, and it’s probably better to keep all of that separate from your work or other personal emails. Another thing that can make you happy to see the postal worker coming is knowing you are getting cash in the mail in the form of mail in rebates! I realize that mail in rebates (MIRs) can be kind of a pain. It takes a few minutes to fill out the information, include the receipt and other proof of purchase they may require, and put it in the mail. But when a MIR gets you an item for free or ends up being a money-maker, it’s definitely worth it! When you see a MIR for the full amount of an item, it’s like getting that item for free (other than tax and the cost of the stamp). Sometimes you will have coupons to go along with items that are free after MIR. That means you will pay less for the product than you will get back in the mail, and that’s always a good thing! Be on the lookout for stickers and tags on products that let you know there’s a rebate available, and be sure to send in the necessary information as soon as possible so you don’t miss out on your cash.
