Father’s Day is a time when we celebrate and congratulate fathers, but today I will focus on the other side—what the father can and should provide for the child, especially the male child who is likely himself to be a father. You need to teach him how not to tolerate any bullying toward himself, toward anyone else, and from himself. He needs to learn that some things are worth being unpopular; some things are even worth taking a butt-whipping for. You need to teach him to respect the opposite sex as equals while at the same time being ready to protect them, even from our own baser instincts. You need to teach him to love his family with an unconditional devotion. You need to guide him toward a generous spirit and a generous heart filled with forgiveness. Teach him to have a generous pocket-book as well. Show him how to share even his favorite toy. Teach him in every conflict to take the high road. Teach him to be intelligent and have an open mind; warn him that the worst are often full of passionate intensity. Teach him to think outside the box. Teach him not to follow but to lead, but to lead gracefully, bravely, and often silently. Teach him to be kind and nonjudgmental. Teach him to be a good neighbor. Teach him about budgets, cars, houses, plumbing, electricity, etc. and teach him how to cook, iron, sew on a button, vacuum a floor. Teach him to dream and embrace hard work. Each of our twins say as a kind of mantra, “I am handsome; I am smart; I am kind.” I will urge them toward all these goals, and I will urge them to be better men than the father who has written these words for them.

Before I jump into this week’s column, I want to take this time to wish all Dads and Granddads reading this a belated Happy Father’s Day. We were given another year to celebrate the day with our Dad. He is a man who simply loves his family dearly and there isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t thank God for having him as an integral part of our lives. I love SUMMER! I say this for many reasons. Primarily from an educator’s point of view it is a time for deep reflection on many aspects of life. During the school year we are busy from August through June preparing for each day’s lessons that we often times don’t have time or make time to just stop and reflect on LIFE in general. So the months of June and July give us an opportunity to THINK about all the things that we overlooked during our busy months. This reflection time happened to me last weekend as my family and I sat gathered together in my sister’s backyard in celebration of Father’s Day. My eyes suddenly became fixated on those in the swimming pool as they splashed and “cannonballed” into the pool. The more I watched them, the more my thoughts drew me back to the summer of 1967 when two significant events happened. I’d like to share my reflections with you. It was June of 1967 and I was to enter the 9th grade in September. I was part of a group of close-knit friends who hung out together at different houses. One of the houses belonged to Jerry, who lived at the corner of my street. Jerry was one of the nicest guys I’ve ever known. His parents were a lot like my folks in that they made all of their children’s friends feel welcome in their home. Everyone loved to go to Jerry’s especially in the summer. Jerry had a built-in pool at his house and this was THE place to be when Jerry hosted a Swim Party for his friends, which included me. There were always 10-15 kids that would attend and listen to music, munch on snacks and of course swim if you chose to do so. It was good wholesome fun. His parents always made it a comfortable environment as they provided bottomless bowls of chips and pitchers of Kool-Aid. It was at his JUNE pool party when the first event took place. A small group of boys got a bit rowdy and started throwing EVERYONE who wasn’t in the pool, INTO the pool. Since I was NOT in the pool, I soon found myself airborne toward the deep end of the pool. Now this posed a major problem for I did NOT know how to swim. It happened so fast that I couldn’t even react by running away from these goofballs. All I remember as I sank further down into the deep end was that I was not going to come out of this situation alive! It seemed as though I had been down there for a LONG time. The next thing I remembered was Jerry pushing on my back, spitting up water and gasping for air. Everyone there was concerned except for Ronnie. He was cracking up and making fun at the fact that a 15 year old did not know how to swim. Needless to say, Jerry’s parents were irate at him and asked him to leave. I explained that I was going home and Ronnie didn’t have to leave. At the age of 15, this happening in front of your friends and facing the fact that I didn’t know how to swim was mortifying to say the least. Several weeks passed and Jerry came over and personally invited me to an end of summer swim party in late AUGUST and promised that Ronnie would not be there. He insisted that I attend and because Jerry was my good friend, I accepted his invite. Here’s when the second event happened took place. During this pool party, a bunch of us girls were sitting around laughing, listening to our favorite 45’s and even dancing a bit. All of a sudden one of my friends let out a scream and said, “It’s Ronnie!” My heart sank and I got up to run out the gate and sure enough he threw 4 of us in the deep end AGAIN!!! There I went down to the bottom and here came Jerry, jumping in to “save” me once more! That was it!! Once I caught my breath, I went up to Ronnie and slugged him as hard as I could in the gut. I ran home and I must have cried for an hour in the bathroom because I didn’t want my Mom to find out what happened, but she eventually did. After several minutes of being lost in my thoughts, I mentally joined the festivities at my sister’s and finished out celebrating Father’s Day. On the drive home, I thought about how that particular summer had such a traumatic affect on my life for over 40 years. I had been deathly afraid of being close to a pool until I finally decided at the age of 54 to “Get Over It!” I enrolled in swim classes offered at the city pool and overcame my intense fear of water. It took me six sessions over two summers to “Get Over” my Fear, but I did it. I remember sharing this memory with my Mother before she passed away and she asked me to learn how to swim someday because she had never learned herself. To this day, I must say that SHE was my inspiration to learn and release my fear. I remember the first time I floated on my back without sinking, looking up to heaven and saying in my heart and mind, “Look Mom, I ‘m doing it!” I had never felt so liberated as I had floating on my back. “In closing always be thankful for the “Jerrys” in our lives who lift us up right before we hit rock bottom. To the “Ronnies” who have affected us in a negative way, it’s time to say I CAN “Get over it!” You won’t regret it for a minute! Have a blessed week!
