THE BAPTIST WHITE LIE CAKE Have you ever told a white lie? Alice Grayson was to bake a cake for the Baptist Church Ladies' Group in Tuscaloosa , but forgot to do it until the last minute. She remembered it the morning of the bake sale and after rummaging through cabinets, found an angel food cake mix & quickly made it while drying her hair, dressing, and helping her son pack for scout camp. When she took the cake from the oven, the center had dropped flat and the cake was horribly disfigured and she exclaimed, "Oh dear, there is no time to bake another cake!"

Before she left the house to drop the cake by the church and head for work, Alice woke her daughter and gave her some money and specific instructions to be at the bake sale the moment it opened at 9:30 and to buy the cake and bring it home. When the daughter arrived at the sale, she found the attractive, perfect cake had already been sold.

All night, Alice lay awake in bed thinking about people pointing fingers at her and talking about her behind her back. The meal was elegant, the company was definitely upper crust old south, and to Alice 's horror, the cake in question was presented for dessert! Alice felt the blood drain from her body when she saw the cake! She started out of her chair to tell the hostess all about it, but before she could get to her feet, the Mayor's wife said, "what a beautiful cake!" Alice, still stunned, sat back in her chair when she heard the hostess(who was a prominent church member) say, "Thank you, I baked it myself." Alice smiled and thought to herself, "God is good."

All things point to the return of the No. 3 Chevrolet to NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series in 2014 with Austin Dillion, grandson of RCR car-owner Richard Childress, handling the driving chores. And Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s comments over the weekend at Daytona added even more credibility to the growing belief that the legendary No. 3 will indeed return to NASCAR’s premier series next year. The number hasn’t been used in the Cup Series since the death of seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt in a last-lap crash in the 2001 Daytona 500. NASCAR owns the rights to the number, but Richard Childress Racing has the right of first refusal to use the number. “I think it would be great,” Earnhardt Jr. said in a Team Chevy news release. “It was an iconic number for my father and it means a lot to a lot of his fans. This sport doesn’t really retire numbers, and all the numbers have history tied to them for several different reasons. The No. 3 is no different.” Despite mixed reviews from Earnhardt fans, Dale Jr. remained steadfast with his opinion. “Austin wanted to come up through the ranks driving the No. 3 in dirt racing and the No. 3 in the Truck Series and the No. 3 in the Nationwide Series. He’s has earned the right to run that number as long as he wants. “It could have been anybody, but it’s Austin,” he added. “It could have been anybody coming up through the ranks that ran that number. Maybe he’s not even an Earnhardt fan; maybe that was just his number and he wanted to run it. It’s not really fair to deny somebody the opportunity, so I’m OK with it. I know that may not be the way a lot of people feel, but I’m sure it’s the minority that feels that way. I think a lot of people will be telling Austin positive things about it.” Dillion won the 2011 Camping World Series title and currently drives for RCR in the Nationwide Series. And it’s a cinch when Austin moves to the Cup Series it’ll be in Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet bearing the late intimidator’s stylized No. 3. If and when that happens, it’ll be fine with Jr.

Centra Backs Lynchburg College’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Lynchburg, Va. (July 2, 2013)- Three years ago, Lynchburg College and Centra began a partnership, designed to address the shortage of physical therapists, by helping to fund the doctor of physical therapy program now located on Monticello Avenue. In 2010 Centra donated $250,000 to help pay for the facility and equipment and had pledged another $250,000 when the program received its full accreditation. After graduating its first class of 44 students this May, Lynchburg College was granted full accreditation status from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). Fulfilling their promise, Centra presented Lynchburg College with $250,000 in a check presentation on Tuesday. “I am most grateful to Mr. E.W. Tibbs for this financial assistance and for the tremendous leadership that Centra and Centra administration and personnel have shown in the development of Lynchburg College's Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program,” said Dr. Kenneth Garren, president of Lynchburg College. “I am so pleased that the College has completed the requirements for receiving this final gift of support from Centra. I receive this gift with deep gratitude, for it is clear to me that Centra’s strong support has been critical to the success of our program,” said Garren. The doctor of physical therapy (DPT) program is a three-year graduate program that prepares students desiring to enter the physical therapy profession. Established in partnership with the regional healthcare community, the DPT program is designed to meet the growing demand for physical therapists. “Historically, physical therapists have been hard to recruit,” said E.W. Tibbs, president and CEO of Centra. “It is a very demanding occupation, and this program allows us to be involved in their training and mentoring. We are excited to be a part of this program with Lynchburg College.”

Congratulations to the Danville Elite Ballers boys basketball team for wining the Tarheels Classic Basketball tournament that was held at Louisburg College in Louisburg NC. The boys have won 5 out of 6 tournaments this year. The win this weekend was a great accomplishment beacause they haven't practiced together in about 3 weeks. They went undefeated for the day as they played some good competition. It was a good win for a good group of kids. Keep up the good work and remember "Work Hard, Play Hard".

Mae Walton West, 81, of 103 Oakhaven Drive Danville, VA passed away Monday, July 1, 2013 while a patient at Charlottesville Health and Rehab in Charlottesville, VA. She was born December 24, 1931 in Pittsylvania County to the late Ida Jane Inman Walton and the late Edward Lee Walton. She was married to Richard Odell West of the residence, who survives. Mrs. West worked with her husband in the family owned business, West Piano Sales and Service as book keeper; she was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters: Beverly Leigh West Fields and husband Bill, of Charlottesville, Shirley West Ralston and husband Jeff, of Houston, TX and Leah West Gourley and husband Brian, of Durham, NC; her son Gary Richard West and wife Linda, of Newport News, VA; her sister Virginia Walton Cassell of Danville; her grandchildren: Catherine, Alex, Diane, Virginia, Margreta, Hannah, Brennan, and Matthew; and her great-grandson Harper. In addition to her parents, Mrs. West was predeceased by her brothers James Walton, George Walton, and Tommy Walton. Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 5, 2013 at Norris West End Chapel with Rev. David Turbyfill officiating. Pastor Jerome Baldwin Morris, Sr., 83, of 1762 Halifax Road, Danville, VA died Monday, July 1, 2013. He was born October 17, 1929 in Martinsville, VA, a son of the late Rev. Hezekiah Morris and the late Amanda Jones Morris. He was married to the late Bernice Dodson Morris. He was the Pastor of High Street Baptist Church, Danville, VA for twentyfour years. Survivors include one daughter, Allison Renee Morris of Danville, VA; two sons, Jerome Morris, Jr (Pam) and Michael Andrea Morris (Gloria), both of Danville, VA; one sister, Vivian Morris of Wilmington, DE; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by five brothers, Moses Morris, Hezekiah Morris, Jr., Alton Morris, James Morris and Leander Morris. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 5, 2013 at 2:00 PM from High Street Baptist Church with Rev. D. JeSie Morris officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. She was born on September 18, 1934 in Caswell N.C and moved Danville at a young age where she grew up in the Schoolfield area. She was the daughter of Herman L. Knick and Pearl Hamlett Knick who both have passed on, along with a brother Herman L. Knick Jr. She is survived by her husband, Frank Hundley and her three daughters, Paula Walker, Cathy Carter, and Rhonda Walker all of Danville. She also survived by her granddaughter and husband, Thomas and Melissa Stuckert of Danville and three great grandchildren, Myra Reese, Jacob Reese, and Ayla Reese. She also has a sister Jeanette Sellers of Ringgold VA and many nieces and nephews. She was a member of State Line Baptist Church. Our mother never required a lot of material things as long as she had her family and her faith, which never wavered right up till the end. Mom you may have left us, but you will never be gone from our hearts and mind. Funeral Services were conducted on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 12:00 noon from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Wayne Wallace, Rev. Wayne Mayberry and Katherine Blair. Wilborne; two granddaughters, Zoe Pritchett and Trinity Pyles; two step grandsons, David Pyles, Jr. and Davion Pyles, all of Danville, VA, and numerous other family members from across the country. Carolina Style Pulled Pork Sandwiches 2 onions, quartered 2 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon paprika 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 4 -6 lbs boneless pork butt 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 1/2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne (Spice it up a bit with 1/2 tspn) Barbecue Sauce 1 cup yellow mustard 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup light brown sugar 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1/4 cup water 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon white pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon liquid smoke Extras 20 buns 1 lb coleslaw Directions: 1. The Meat 2. Place the quartered onions in a crock pot. 3. Combine brown sugar, paprika, salt and pepper: rub over the roast. 4. Place the roast over the onions in the crock pot. 5. Combine the vinegar, Worcestershire Sauce, red pepper flakes, sugar, mustard, garlic salt and cayenne; stir to mix well. 6. Drizzle about 1/2 of the vinegar mixture over the roast and cover. Refrigerate the remaining vinegar mixture. 7. Cook on low up to 18 hours, but at least 12 hours. Drizzle the other half of the vinegar mixture over the roast during the last 1/2 hour of cooking. 8. While the meat is cooking, prepare the barbecue sauce. Mix all ingredients except soy sauce, butter and smoke. Simmer, uncovered, on low heat for 30 minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients and simmer, uncovered, for 10 more minutes. Set aside to cool. 9. Remove the meat from the crock pot and allow to rest for at least 15 minutes. (Very important step -longer is better). 10. Remove the onions and chop to a fine consistency. 11. Pull apart the meat with a couple of forks. Meat should have a shredded look to it. 12. Mix chopped onions and shredded pork along with a little bit of juice from the crock pot to taste. Add sufficient barbecue sauce to the mixture to achieve desired taste. Meat should have distinctive barbecue flavor. 13. To serve, spread barbecue sauce on bottom of a hearty bun. 14. Put layer of pulled pork on bun. Spread barbecue sauce over meat. 15. Add layer of your favorite cole slaw on top of meat. Layer some more barbecue sauce over cole slaw. 16. Spread top of bun with more sauce. 17. Grab a fist full of napkins, and enjoy.

Walgreens has come to town, and if you haven’t tried it yet maybe now is the time! In continuing with store specific tips I decided to share some of what I’ve learned about shopping and couponing at Walgreens so that you can start saving money at the area’s newest pharmacy. First, near the beginning of each month when you go into Walgreens you should pick up the monthly coupon booklet. It should be located in a rack near the front of the store. This booklet is full of Walgreens store coupons, which can be stacked with manufacturer’s coupons. That means you have the chance to use two coupons on a single item, and that typically means you’ll get a great deal. One of the best ways to get a great deal at Walgreens is with their Register Rewards offers. Register Rewards are similar to Extra Care Bucks at CVS. You earn them after purchasing certain items each week that offer the rewards. Sometimes the Register Rewards you earn for an item are equal to the cost of that item. For example, a box of bandages may cost $2.99 and also give you back $2.99 in Register Rewards. That is a deal that’s hard to pass up! If you are able to use a coupon on the item, then you will get back more in Register Rewards than the cost of the item! Walgreens’ other rewards program is called Balance Rewards. You can sign up for this online or on your next visit to the store. You’ll receive a Balance Rewards card that can be scanned each time you check out. Each week there are sales that offer Balance Rewards points when you purchase the item or items. Once you have earned enough points, you can then redeem them for dollars off a future purchase. That’s turning points into actual savings for you! You can also earn points when you purchase prescriptions, get immunizations, and track healthy habits like exercise. Finally, I like to keep an eye out for Walgreens photo deals. They will often have online promotional codes for things like a free 8x10 photo collage. The best thing about these deals is that because we now have a local Walgreens store, we can choose to pick up most types of photo items at the store instead of paying to have them shipped. That means that a free photo offer is literally FREE if you can pick it up at the store! I hope these tips help you “work smarter, not harder” while saving at Walgreens. We are pleased to announce the winners of our 4th of July Pie Baking Contest! Christi Ragsdale – 1st Place Christi's Key Lime Pie Crust: 2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup melted butter Combine ingredidents and press into bottom and sides of springform pan. Bake 350 for 8 minutes. Filling: 3 cans sweetened condensed milk 9 egg yolks 11/2 cups key lime juice 3/4 cups sugar Combine ingredients until smooth. Pour into prepared crust. Bake 350 for 50 minutes.

Joyce E. Scott - 2nd Place Banana Pudding Pie Ingredients: 1 (12 oz) box vanilla wafers, divided 1/2 cup butter, melted 3 large bananas 4 egg whites 1/2 cup sugar Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Reserve 30 vanilla wafers; pulse remaining vanilla wafers in a food processor 8 to 10 times or until coarsely crushed. (Yield about 2-1/2 cups.) Stir together crushed vanilla wafers and butter until blended. Firmly press on bottom, up sides, and onto lip of a 9 inch (I had to use 9-11/16) pie plate. 2. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 - 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to a wire rack, and let cool 30 minutes or until completely cool. 3. Arrange half of banana slices over bottom of crust. Prepare Vanilla Cream Filling, and spread 3/4 cup hot filling over vanilla wafers, and top with remaining half of banana slices. Spread remaining hot filling (about 1 cup) over banana slices. (Filling will be about 1/4 inch higher than top edge of crust.) 4. Beat egg whites at high speed with an electric mixer until foamy. Add sugar, 1 T at a time, beating until stiff peaks form and sugar is dissolved. Spread meringue over hot filling, sealing edges.

Aaron Stainback – 3rd Place Neapolitan Cream Cheese Pie 11/4 cups of Keebler Sandies (Simply Shortbread) cookie crumbs 2 tbsp butter, melted 3 packages Philadelphia brick cream cheese, softened 1/3 cup sugar 3 eggs 1/2 cup Hershey's Chocolate Baking Melts 1/2 cup Hershey's Premiere White Chips (creamy vanilla flavor) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 vanilla bean 1 teaspoon strawberry extract 1/3 cup of Welch's Strawberry Toppers Heat oven to 350. Mix cookie crumbs and butter, press to cover just the bottom of a 9 or 10 inch pie pan. Bake the crust for about 7 minutes, and then let it cool. In mixer, beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth, while adding 1 egg at a time. Divide into 3 separate bowls the cream cheese mixture. (about 11/2 cups per bowl) Melt the Chocolate baking melts and mix into the first cream cheese mixture, pour onto crust and put in freezer for about 10 minutes. (This is to insure that the next 2 layers don't blend together) Take the remaining shortbread cookies you have or you can use fudge striped cookies, and line them around the edge of the pie (this serves as a great outer crust and keeps your cream cheese from running out the pan) Melt the White Chips in the second cream cheese mixture and add the vanilla extract and the vanilla beans from the pod (save the pod and you can make your own vanilla extract if you have a little bottle of vodka) If you don't have a vanilla bean, just double up on the vanilla extract. Pour the cream cheese mixture on top of the chocolate layer. Put in freezer for another 7 minutes. Mix together the strawberry extract and Welch's Strawberry Toppers in the third cream cheese mixture and pour on top of the vanilla layer.

Bake for 1 hour. Let it set for an hour and then cool for about 4 hours. Top with fresh strawberries if you want to add an extra twist. Enjoy! Great pie for the summer! It's as much fun making as it is to eat!

5. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 - 12 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven, and let cool on a wire rack for 1 hour or until completely cool. Coarsely crush remaining 10 vanilla wafers and sprinkle over top of pie. Cover and chill 4 hours.

Vanilla Cream Filling: 2 cups milk 3/4 cup sugar 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 2 large eggs 4 egg yolks 2 tsp vanilla extract Whisk together first 5 ingredients in a heavy saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, whisking constantly, 8 10 minutes or until mixture reaches the thickness of chilled pudding. (It will just begin to bubble and will be thick enough to hold soft peaks when whisk is lifted.) Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Use immediately.
