Senior Moments I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour.,. But, by the time I got my leotards on, The class was over. My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Auto VillA NASCAR updating its rule book BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper Hooray! NASCAR is updating its rule book. The sanctioning body announced recently broad plans to automate and revamp its appeal process in an effort for race teams and fans alike to better understand exactly what is allowed and what isn’t inside the rule book. Beginning with the 2015 racing season, NASCAR expects to implement several changes to its three major series. Word document will convert to computer automateddesign drawings in order that race shops have a better understanding how each rule is applied and what’s allowed and what isn’t. The most important change is the clarification of the rule book. Plans are to spell out exact penalties for violating each rule. NASCAR has a long history of not assessing the same penalty for the same violation. It the past, the severity of the infraction depended on the person or team involved. The current appeal process, a useless tool that drivers and team owners had at their disposal to overturn a rule infraction, is expected to picture more panel members that have stronger racing backgrounds than the present. Guidelines will include a more transparent approval process on what parts are acceptable. Implementing new initiatives within the rule book is a good thing. The old system of inconsistency has bewildered The NASCAR fan base for years. NASCAR needs a new face. Hopefully, this brainchild isn’t just putting lipstick on a pig.

Averett University Appoints Stacy Gato New Vice President for Enrollment Management Averett University is pleased to announce that Stacy Gato has been appointed as its new vice president of enrollment management, effective August 15. Gato comes to Averett from the University of New England (UNE), a private, rapidly-growing university in Maine with an enrollment of more than 8,000 traditional and adult students. In her most recent role as executive director of university admissions for UNE, she oversaw both the office of undergraduate admissions and the office of graduate admissions; supervised a staff of 25 professionals; and was responsible for marketing, recruitment and enrollment for the university’s six colleges across two campuses, as well as all online programs. Gato began her career at the University of New England in 1999 as the coordinator of the university’s three branch campuses in Israel (Haifa, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem). From there, she quickly rose to the positions of: assistant registrar and coordinator of student administrative services; interim university registrar; director of enrollment services; and director of graduate admissions. In the latter capacity, she built and provided leadership to the office of graduate and professional admissions for the Westbrook College of Health Professions, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Graduate Studies and the College of Osteopathic Medicine. “We are fortunate to welcome to this key position someone with a tremendous breadth and depth of successful enrollment leadership experience spanning nearly 20 years,” said Averett President Dr. Tiffany Franks. “Averett will benefit from Stacy Gato’s extensive knowledge, combined with her engaging, passionate approach to leadership.” In addition to her successful career, Gato has been actively involved in the leadership of her local community, including service as an elected member of the Board of Education for the City of South Portland Schools where she served as chair of the board in 2009. Mt. Airy Elementary School held its first WATCH D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students) Program on July 11, 2013 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Dads and their children enjoyed a pizza meal and did fun activities. Dads were then introduced to the WATCH D.O.G.S Program. The WATCH D.O.G.S Program encourages more male participation in the schools. dads who sign up for the program will spend at least one day a year at their child's school serving as extra security personnel, tutors, and mentors. He was born May 11, 1964 in Danville to Betty Rhodes Wood and the late Thelbert W. Wood. He was married to Samantha Turner Wood of the residence, who survives. Mr. Wood worked as a Business Analyst at Maximus, Inc. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his daughter Tiffany Marie Andrade of Danville; his son Jeffrey Daniel Carlson of Danville; his grandchildren Veruca Wood and Donavan Andrade; and his step grandfather Emory Garman; his sister-inlaw Lisa C. homemaker, and she was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was a loving mother, and battled cancer for 13 years. She was devoted to her family and her faith. She is survived by one son: Randall “Randy” Dale Lester, of Danville, VA; two daughters: Tracey Chandler and her husband Tommy, and Tonya Pegram, all of Providence, NC; one sister: Joyce Lamm, of Brandywine, MD; three brothers: Willard Irby, of Clinton, MD, Wayne Irby, of Franklinton, NC, and Lloyd Irby “Wallace”, of Danville,VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. James Donald Wrenn, age 89 of 470 Parker Road West, Danville, died Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for two months. Mr. Wrenn was born on January 31, 1924 in Person County, N.C., a son of the late Joseph Wrenn and the late Lottie Penticost Wrenn. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a avid deer hunter and gardener. He had lived most of his life in Danville where he was employed by P. Lorillard Tobacco Company in the Maintenance Department until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was of the Baptist faith. He was married to Alma Brown Wrenn, who predeceased him on July 19, 1995. Mr. Wrenn is survived by one daughter, Marsha Wrenn Worley and husband, Jerry of Dry Fork, three grandchildren, Brandy Moore and husband, Brent, Stephanie Strider, Jennifer Hughes and husband, Brent, three great grandchildren, Madison Moore, Austin Moore, Alyssa Strider, two son-in-laws, David Lee Jones of Blairs, John R. James Jefferson Martin “Jolly Jim”
James Jefferson Martin “Jolly Jim” Surrounded by his family, he left this world peacefully and is with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born July 9, 1925, in Stuart, Virginia, to the late Lois Carter Martin Hatchett and William “Willie” S. Martin. Mr. Martin was a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School. He also was very active with the youth in the church and purchased a bus to transport the kids to Youth for Christ on Saturday nights, trips to Duffys and Kellys, the bowling alley and skating rink and various field trips. It was during that time that the youth dubbed him “Jolly Jim” and that name stuck. He was the owner and operator of Jolly Jim’s for over 50 years. He was an avid reader of the Bible and could quote scripture by heart. He also had a beautiful penmanship and calligraphy and art were some of his hobbies. He loved chihuahuas and even traded a Cadillac for one. He is survived by three daughters: Susan M. Dahl of Danville, Sharon “Tuffy” Nunn of Danville and Sandra M. Collins of Goldsboro, NC and one son, Steven A. “Jolly” Martin of Crossroads, TN.
He is also survived by a sister, Linda M. Winstead and one brother, William “Bill” S. Martin. He is also survived by his former wife of 40 years, Dorcas Martin. In addition he is survived by 4 grandchildren, James Jefferson “Jeff” Keller, Kevin C. Booker, Lindsay M. Cornelius and Shannon Hildreth and 6 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Peggy Martin, and two children, Shirley Martin Keller and Sylvia Arlene Martin and 2 grandchildren, Mikey Adkins and Elizabeth Martin. He had been a resident at Emeritus of Danville since November, 2012. We would like to thank them for all of their care, support and love. And a special thanks to the 5th floor staff at DRMC for making him as comfortable as possible in his final days. Mr. Martin’s body is being donated to science. Doris Jones Doolin, 87, of 2812 Dodson Drive, Danville, VA died on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Piney Forest Health Care after a decline in health for several years. Mrs. Doolin was born in Danville, VA on July 8, 1926 a daughter of the late Luther Carson Jones and the late Madell Jones Starzel. She spent all of her life in the Pittsylvania County and Danville areas where she worked for the former Dan River Mills Inc. as a production worker until her retirement due to her health. She attended the Danville Beauty Academy and she was also a graduate from La Salle Extension University. She was of the Baptist faith. Known for being a loving wife and mother, Mrs. Doolin also enjoyed her flowers and garden as long as she was able to do so. She was an avid reader, loved to travel and enjoyed the beauty in classic cars. Mrs. Doolin was married to Berry Lee Doolin, Sr. who died on August 8, 2009. Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Doolin Pickeral of Danville, VA; one son, Berry Lee Doolin, Jr. of Danville, VA; a granddaughter, Wendy Thornton and husband Joe; and a great grandson, Jacob Thornton. Eddie William Gochenour, after an intense battle with cancer, slipped peacefully into the arms of our Father on the morning of Friday, July 19, 2013. He was born March 30, 1946 and is predeceased by his parents, Bessie Whitzel Gochenour and Carl Melvin Gochenour of Woodstock and one stepson, “Tikie” Sexton. Surviving, of the home, is Violet Delight Gochenour, and son Eddie West Gochenour and wife, Barbara of Greenville, NC; a stepdaughter, Alexis K. Adams of Piedmont, SC; stepsons, Allen Sexton of Sutherlin, VA, Wayne Sexton and wife, Tammy of Travelers Rest, SC and Lloyd “Stormy” Sexton of Piedmont, SC; a brother, Loy Gochenour and wife, Judy, of Woodstock, VA; a sister, Doris Stokes and husband, John of Baltimore, MD; and a sister-inlaw, Dee Dee Duncan of Ridgeway, VA. In addition, he is survived by four grandchildren, Jason Mansco, Kevin Sexton and wife, Krystal, Tonia Brumfield, and Tony Sexton; three great-grandchildren, Madison Sexton, and Avery and Gabriel Brumfield; and one great-great granddaughter, Arieanna Kelli Ann Sexton. Eddie attended Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church of Danville. He was retired as an engineer from Intertape in 2010. He was also retired from the U.S. Army serving for over 20 years and was a Vietnam Veteran. He also served as a previous Commander of the Danville American Legion Post 1097. She worked in the Research Lab of Dan River Mills, Inc. for a number of years and was a homemaker most of her life. She was a member of Liberty Baptist
Church. Shelba J. Wilson
Shelba J. Wilson, 75, of 857 Milton Hwy Ringgold, VA went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at her residence surrounded by her family and friends, after being in declining health for the past year. Mrs. Wilson was born in Burke County, NC on November 8, 1937 a daughter of the late Kermit O. Huffman and the late Bessie King Huffman Howard. She spent most of her life in the Pittsylvania County area where she worked
with the Pittsylvania County School System as a teacher’s aide, dealing with special needs children, for over ten years, she also worked in the bakery at Wal-Mart until her retirement. Mrs. Wilson was of the Evangelical Methodist Faith where she was very active in the ladies groups of the various churches that her husband pastored. She also held several district offices in the Evangelical Methodist Conference. On April 20, 1958 she married, The Reverend Gary David Wilson who survives of the residence. 2 onions, quartered 2 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon paprika 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 4 -6 lbs boneless pork butt 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 1/2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne (Spice it up a bit with 1/2 tspn) Barbecue Sauce 1 cup yellow mustard 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup light brown sugar 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1/4 cup water 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon white pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon liquid smoke Extras 20 buns 1 lb coleslaw Directions: 1. The Meat 2. Place the quartered onions in a crock pot. 3. Combine brown sugar, paprika, salt and pepper: rub over the roast. 4. Place the roast over the onions in the crock pot. 5. Combine the vinegar, Worcestershire Sauce, red pepper flakes, sugar, mustard, garlic salt and cayenne; stir to mix well. 6. Drizzle about 1/2 of the vinegar mixture over the roast and cover. Refrigerate the remaining vinegar mixture. 7. Cook on low up to 18 hours, but at least 12 hours. Drizzle the other half of the vinegar mixture over the roast during the last 1/2 hour of cooking. 8. While the meat is cooking, prepare the barbecue sauce. Mix all ingredients except soy sauce, butter and smoke. Simmer, uncovered, on low heat for 30 minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients and simmer, uncovered, for 10 more minutes. Set aside to cool. 9. Remove the meat from the crock pot and allow to rest for at least 15 minutes. (Very important step -longer is better). 10. Remove the onions and chop to a fine consistency. 11. Pull apart the meat with a couple of forks. Meat should have a shredded look to it. 12. Mix chopped onions and shredded pork along with a little bit of juice from the crock pot to taste. Add sufficient barbecue sauce to the mixture to achieve desired taste. Meat should have distinctive barbecue flavor. 13. To serve, spread barbecue sauce on bottom of a hearty bun. 14. Put layer of pulled pork on bun. Spread barbecue sauce over meat. 15. Add layer of your favorite cole slaw on top of meat. Layer some more barbecue sauce over cole slaw. 16. Spread top of bun with more sauce. 17. Grab a fist full of napkins, and enjoy.

$mart Dollars 3 Tips to Help You Save in the Kitchen
I would say that the kitchen is probably one of the most expensive places in the home. Just think about how much we spend on groceries, electricity to cook the meals and run the appliances, and the time it takes for all of the tasks that happen in our kitchens. Time is money too, right? But I also think the kitchen is one of the places were there is the most opportunity to save and change our habits for the better so that we can work smarter, not harder. So I’m offering a few simple ways to save a bit in the kitchen. You can find more ideas like this plus Cheap Eats recipes at www.thesmartdollars.com. 1. Plan your meals. You may be tired of me bringing this up, but I can’t help but keep suggesting that you plan meals at your home. That’s because I truly believe that it saves lots of time, money, and stress! I like to spend a few minutes planning either on Sunday or early on Monday, just for our supper meals for the week. Even a very basic idea of what you will have allows you time to make sure that you have all of the ingredients, time to thaw anything that’s frozen, and do any prep work early in the morning or throughout the day of that meal. Planning also saves you from making extra trips to the store at the last minute or from choosing to eat out because time got away from you. 2. Cut back on meat. One of the biggest expenses in most of our grocery budgets is fresh meat. I have found that I can cut back on the amount of meat, ground beef or shredded/chopped chicken for example, in many recipes and not notice a difference in taste. Does that dish of baked spaghetti really need an entire pound of ground beef? Probably not. Will the chicken pot pie still be yummy with only a cup and a half of chicken instead of two cups? Most likely. You can always add in a bit more of a less expensive ingredient in place of the meat to keep the dish hearty and filling enough. Another way to reduce your meat costs is to opt for ground turkey instead of beef. 3. Try something homemade. Whether or not you would consider yourself a “good cook” or handy in the kitchen, I encourage you to add at least one thing to your recipe book that is homemade instead of store bought. There are so many things that you can make at home that will be just as good if not better than what you can buy, and the cost will be drastically lower. Cook up a large batch of homemade pancakes or waffles and freeze them instead of buying the frozen ones. Mix up your own taco seasoning from spices you already have in the cabinet. Bake your own yeast rolls, cookies, or bread. Search engines, Pinterest, and that stack of cookbooks at your house will offer endless ideas. noW! Lawrence Hampton I had always done well in school, but then the doctors told me I had a serious heart condition. I could not play sports or do many of the other things other kids could do. I was not sure how long my life would be. So I stopped trying at school and finally dropped out. Then I found out the doctors were wrong. My heart is fine. I started to set goals and wanted to go to college. Everyone said I needed to get my GED® certificate. I went to the Adult & Career Education Center and learned about a new program, PluggedIn. Through this program, I would get my GED® certificate AND go to college to get my Manufacturing certificate from DCC. With the help of my teachers (I still do not really like school), I made it through. I graduated from the GED® program and the manufacturing program. Now I really can see the end of my goal in sight. I have enrolled in a two year program. When I graduate, I will get a good paying job. My family has been there to support me all my life. With a good job, I can start helping to take care of them.
You can reach your dream too. It will not be easy, but if you come in NOW, you can join the fall PluggedIn program and earn your GED® certificate before the test changes in January. Make the effort NOW; it will really help you in the future.
