Bank Account Maury ran a small commercial real estate company.

One day, a few years back, he sold his interest in one of his projects for 3 million dollars.

The only problem was that the guy who bought him out was a big shot in his very small hometown in Pennsylvania, and he wanted Maury to use the local bank branch where he had his business.

So Maury goes in to the guy's local bank and tells the teller he'd like to open a few accounts. The teller goes through the list of gifts you can get for your initial deposit. $300 gets you a toaster, $600 for a television, etc.

The teller then asks him how much he would like to deposit. Without saying a word, Maury hands her the cashier's check.

The teller turns bright red, and runs to get her manager. The manager escorts him into her office, where they sit down. "Sir, welcome to our town. We're thrilled to have you as a customer. What can I get you?"

To which Maury replied, "I'll take 10,000 toasters."

She was surprised when she read the card's message, thanking us for our kind donation. A look of horror then crossed her face as she realized that the two bags of leaves we had raked and bagged the previous night were now gone.

It might look like I'm doing nothing, but at the cellular level, I'm really quite busy.

At least I have a positive attitude about my destructive habits.

Auto VillA NASCAR and race fixing

It’s an age-old question as to whether a billiondollar industry such as NASCAR with ties to Ford, General Motors and Toyota is willing to risk its own existence and legal freedom to “rig” races.

Emphatically, the answer to that question is “no.”

Take Dale Earnhardt Jr. as an example: It’s been 44 races since Junior won his last Sprint Cup race. Would it not be in the best interest of NASCAR for its most popular driver to win a race or a national title?

Yes, but he seldom does.

The unfounded gossip of a “fix” has been swirling around NASCAR’s fan base forever, and it’s a ridiculous discussion. In order to fix a race – which is impossible – a major conspiracy would be required and utterly impossible to cover up. If NASCAR even entered the thought of a “fix” to boost its sagging TV ratings, then why not give Danica Patrick a rocket ship to ride around in each week. Can you image what it would do to NASCAR’s fan base if Junior or a female driver should win a national championship?

But the name you hear most is Earnhardt, and the unfounded gossip of a fix.

“That’s the last thing you want to hear and ask questions about,” five-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmy Johnson told Yahoo Sports. “I’ve lived through my fair share of unfair opinions and crap. Everyone has that black cloud out there that people go to…when things come up.

“Unfortunately that’s the one (NASCAR favoritism) for Junior. We all know it’s untrue. He hates it. And he doesn’t want any part of that crap.”

I’m no ring bearer for NASCAR, and never have been. The more you argue the point, the more you point out how insane it is to fix races. NASCAR has no control over a driver’s skill, mechanical failures and tire issues. Questionable cautions flags for debris and speeding penalties are one thing, but rigging races is another.

The truth is NASCAR is not in the “fixing” business, and to think otherwise is ludicrous.

It’s been 14 months since Junior won his last race. Even if NASCAR wanted to risk its own integrity to aid Junior, or Patrick or any other driver just how would they do that?

Even while losing, Junior gets it. Logic is nowhere to be found when his name is mentioned. He didn’t ask for his father to be the best racer around town, which has caused him endless suffering because of that.

Deserving or not, it’s a no-win situation for Junior.

Legacy Run

In July of 2013, brothers, Matthew & Dylan McCrickard, participated in the Danville/ Pittsylvania Co. Fairgrounds Tractor Pull. This is the third year that Matthew has entered the NTPA Youth Pull and won first place trophies in all three of his events.

Little brother, Dylan entered the NTPA Youth Pull for the first time and placed fourth for a green ribbon. The McCrickard brothers have been invited to participate in the NTPA Youth Tractor Pull at the Raleigh State Fair in October. Matthew is a fourth grader and attends Union Hall Elementary School.

Dylan is a Kindergartner and also attends Union Hall Elementary School. They are the sons of Proud Parents, Buddy & Kelly McCrickard of Callands, VA. Grandparents are Roger & Vicky McCrickard of Callands, VA & Julia Clark of Clarksville, VA.

American Legion Riders, Last Capital chapter, have embarked on a trip of 12 states in 12 days in support of the Legacy Fund. The Legacy Fund provides scholarships to children of U.S. soldiers killed in action since 9/11. The Legion Riders will travel to Indianapolis, the national headquarters of the American Legion where they will meet up with Legion Riders from across the country and travel to Houston for the American Legion National Convention.

It is a trip of over 4,000 miles for these dedicated Legion Riders.

Business Bytes Centra Receives Recertification as an Acute Heart Attack Center Centra Lynchburg General Hospital has successfully attained its recertification as an Acute Heart Attack Center by The Joint Commission. The Joint Commission, which reviewed Centra's processes and treatment of heart attack patients, evaluates and accredits health care organizations and programs for safety and quality. In 2010 Centra received the accreditation, and the recertification process occurs every two years.

After an extensive on-site evaluation of Centra's processes and ability to evaluate and improve care, The Joint Commission had no recommendations for process changes. The national recertification once again shows that Centra exceeds national standards and guidelines that bring heart attack care excellence.

Centra was awarded recertification in disease-specific certification in Acute Myocardial Infarction.

Centra's emergency and cardiology teams consistently take heart attack patients from the doors of the emergency department to successful angioplasty faster than the majority of hospitals in the country.

Centra currently treats heart attacks in 43 minutes, compared to the national median average of 62 minutes. Many efforts have gone on throughout the state of Virginia, and Centra was a pioneer in the area of Acute MI care. In 1999 Centra originated some of the Acute MI best practices that would form the basis of faster Acute MI treatments throughout the state and internationally, and was a co-founder of the Virginia Heart Attack Coalition in 2009.

In addition, Centra’s Heart Center is recognized

by The Joint Commission as a certified Chest Pain Center. Chad Hoyt, M.D., medical director of the Stroobants Heart Center, said, “This recognition demonstrates that we provide world class heart care here in Lynchburg. We are proud of the state’s overall improvement in the care and treatment of heart attacks, and continue to work in collaboration with other health systems in Virginia to be even faster.”

A Dollar Donation for Truth to benefit the Truth House Building Fund, which will fund the restoration and repair of three donated houses that will be used as Truth Houses.

Truth Houses are sixty day to twenty-four month transitional living & educational program for those leaving incarceration, or struggling with other life issues. The purpose of the program is to provide positive, faith-based direction for those returning to society, so individuals may become responsible and productive citizens. The program will require a commitment of personal fortitude from participants in the program, as well as, individuals and organizations in the community to support and mentor them.

Everyone has known someone whom has taken a wrong direction in life; however, with positive reinforcements, goal commitment and supportive goal maintenance, life direction can be changed to responsible community participation. Thus, our motto is “Offering Hope for Today, While Strengthening Our Community of Tomorrow”.

CRRS, Truth Steps and the Truth Houses are built on the foundational principles of scripture to glorify God while promoting healing of each participant. The prayer is that every individual whom completes the program will carry on the message of hope and faith they have received as a part of the Great Commission. David Allen “Dave” Mowrey

David Allen “Dave” Mowrey, 51, of 5476 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA died Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born December 24, 1961 in Baltimore, Maryland to Melvin Mowrey, Jr. and the late Irene Kacinakas.

He was married to Lynn Harris Mowrey of the residence, who survives.

Mr. Mowrey proudly served his country as a soldier in the United States Army. He worked as a Utility Mechanic for Nestle in Danville. He was also a very talented carpenter who loved to build and work with his hands.

In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by his sons Jason Mowrey and wife Adrienne, of Chatham, VA, and Kevin Mowrey of Colorado Springs, CO; his step-daughter Meagan Puckett of Danville; his step-sons Arthur Puckett of Martinsville, VA, and Aaron Puckett and wife Sasha, of Danville; his brothers Victor Mowrey and Timothy Mowrey, both of Baltimore, MD; his step-brothers John Mowrey and Michael Mowrey; his step-sisters Lisa Mowrey Saad and Robin Mowrey; and his grandchildren: Madison Whalen, Kaitlyn Mowrey, Jacob Mowrey, Kaden Puckett and Kendall Smith.

A memorial service was held 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2013 at Norris Funeral Services, Mt. Hermon Chapel, Danville, VA with Rev. Fred Unger officiating. American Legion Dan River Post 1097 conducted military honors.

Betty Ruth Allen

Betty Ruth Allen, 89, died Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Born on August 3, 1924, in Durham, NC, she was the daughter of Charles Asbury Allen and Almeda Davis Allen. She was the last member of her family.

She worked at WBTM and later as a bookkeeper for Belk-Leggett Financial Center. She was a member of the former Main Street United Methodist Church and later a member of Saint Luke’s United Methodist Church.

A graveside service was held at 2:00 PM, Friday, August 16, 2013 at Highland Burial Park with the Reverend Clyde Shelton officiating.

Kathryn Moore Ball

Kathryn Moore Ball, 77, of 243 Lipton Lane died Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for the past three years.

Born in Warrior Mines, WV on July 3, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Lilburn Fullen Moore and Bessie Roach Moore.

Mrs. Ball retired from the Hylton Hall Offices of Dan River, Inc. She was a faithful member of Woodlawn Baptist Church for 43 years where she taught Sunday School and was a long time member of the Chancel Choir.

On May 16, 1959, she married, Gary Wade Ball, who survives.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Dawn Ball, of Danville, VA, and Beth Goard, and husband, Keith, of Dry Fork, VA; two grandchildren, Eli Goard and Sarah Goard; four sisters-in-law, Faye Light, Sylvia Ball, Patricia Ball and Fay Moore; brother-in-law, Vernon Ball, and wife, ReElla, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 2:00 pm from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel conducted by the Reverend Curtis Faison and the Reverend Ronnie Brown.

Dorothy Mae Pointer, 80, of 135 North Avenue, Danville, VA, died, Saturday, August 10, 2013 at her residence.

Born January 8, 1933 in Caswell County, NC, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Addie Pinchback Poole.

Survivors include one son, Francis Williamson of Danville, VA; one brother, John C. Poole, of Danville, VA and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Sonya Alford.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, August 16, 2013 at 12 Noon from the Chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home with Pastor David Ball officiating.

Marie Wilmoth

Marie Wilmoth, age 77, of 816 Kemper Rd., Danville, VA, died on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Roman Eagle Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on July 05, 1936, in Franklin County, VA, to the late George “Buck” and Gladys Booth Rakes.

Mrs. Wilmoth worked at Durham Hosiery as a folder and attended Stateline Baptist Church. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren. Mrs. Wilmoth was a faithful follower of the truth spoken

by Rev. Barber, and she loved gospel music.

She is survived by her husband Ronald Weston Wilmoth, of the residence; daughters: Diane Walker, of Las Vegas and Joyce Robertson, of Windsor, Ontario; two grandchildren: Laurie Riner, of Roanoke, VA and Autumn Crosby, of Staunton, VA; four great-grandchildren: Ian Riner Elliott, Christian Crosby, Tyler Crosby, and Hannah Crosby; special sister-in-law: Bettie Long; two step-children: Keith Wilmoth and Terrie Dove; and very special nephew: Johnny Owens.

John Calvin Whitt, Sr., 74, of 611 Brightwell Dr. Danville, VA, passed away early Thursday morning, August 15th 2013.

John was born June 22nd 1939 in Washington County, VA, son of the late J. Roy Whitt and Helen McNew Whitt.

He had been in declining health for 22 years due to Parkinson’s disease. John was instrumental in starting the Danville/ Pittsylvania County Parkinson’s support group.

John served in the United

States Air Force and Naval Air Reserve. He retired from the United States Treasury Department.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Bessie Ruth Lewis; daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy) Whitt Tanner and husband, Steve, Portsmouth VA; son, John Calvin Whitt, Jr., Danville, VA; two grandchildren, Tyler Tanner and Brooke Tanner; brother William Henry Whitt and wife Judy, King George, VA; sister Janice Whitt Bickford, Danville, VA. John was a member of the Roman Eagle Lodge No. 122 and the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.

Mary Sue Leonhardt, 66, of 230 Rocky Lane, Danville, VA passed away peacefully at her residence Thursday, August 15, 2013 after being in declining health for the last five years.

Born Nov. 15, 1946 in Easley, SC, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Aaron and Edith Mae Smith. She is also predeceased by one sister, Pinky Smith, one brother, Buddy Smith, and son Marty Earl Bottoms. She is survived by her son Scottie E. Bottoms and wife Kathy, and grandson Jacob Bottoms of Danville; son Stacy Griffin of Danville; loving care taker of five years Markus Leonhardt; sisters Betty McGray of Norfolk, VA, Sandy Sharpe of Columbia, SC; and four brothers: Alan Smith and Larry Smith of Danville, Danny Smith of Laurens, SC and Steve Smith of Georgia.

She was known to many as “Mama Sue” and what a great mother and giving person she truly was to all she knew and met, because she always made a lasting impression. She was a true force to be reckoned with in her own way. The brightest light in her life was her family, but especially her only grand-

son Jacob, and oh how she loved him. She taught him things that will forever last in his memory of his “Nanny,” those unique moments and lessons he will cherish throughout his life.

She was an avid Duke Blue Devil Basketball fan, loved reading her Bible, and loved bowling back in the days when her health was good.

Mrs. Haynes was born on July 10, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to the late Markey Calvin Chumley and Virginia Mae Wilson.

Mrs. Haynes worked as a weaver at Dan River Textiles. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, Post 1097.

Mrs. Haynes is survived by her husband Claude L. Haynes of the home; three sons, Mark Harris and wife Jan, James Calvin Harris and Daryl Keith Harris all of Danville; four step-children, three grandchildren, one great grandchild; two sisters, Helen Wilkerson and husband Darrell and Elizabeth Turner; special friend, Toni Adams, and special child, Mary Walker.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Haynes was preceded in death by a son, Radford Raye Harris, two step children and two sisters.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday August 20, 2013 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel at 2 pm with Reverend Jerry Hobbs officiating.

Dr. B.R. Ashby

Dr. B.R. Ashby, local psychiatrist, businessman, and civic leader, passed away peacefully at home, 1124 Main Street, on August 15, 2013. He was the son of the late Fred James Ashby and Pernie Sizer Ashby.

Dr. Ashby grew up in Schoolfield and was a graduate of George Washington High School.

He attributed his life-long love of learning to the excellent teachers and mentors of the Danville Public School System who instilled in him the desire to follow his dreams. Dr. Ashby received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry at the University of Virginia in 1961, graduated from the UVA School of Medicine in 1965, and completed his Residency Training in Psychiatry at UVA in 1971. He served his country as Chief of Psychiatry, U.S. Naval Hospital at Cherry Point, N.C. from 1967-1969. Dr. Ashby returned to Danville in 1971 to begin his professional practice.

For his continuous involvement in the community, the Kiwanis Club of Danville honored Dr. Ashby as the 2001 Kiwanis Citizen of the Year. In addition, as President and Chairman of Piedmont Broadcasting Corporation, Dr. Ashby had the opportunity to pursue his interests in music and media.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Frances Pryor Ashby; his three daughters, Jennifer Ashby DeSanto (Kevin) of Bethesda, Maryland, Meredith Ashby Ramsden (Chris) of Bethesda, Maryland, Margaret Ashby Maloney (Dan) of Arlington, Virginia; and son, Jefferson Pryor Ashby (Katie) of New York City; as well as five granddaughters and three grandsons. He is also survived by his only sister, Priscilla Ashby Beyer of Danville.

A Memorial Service of Celebration was held at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church on Sunday, August 18th, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, the Danville Life Saving Crew, or The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region.

Ivory ”Junior” Thomas Jones, Jr.

Ivory ”Junior” Thomas Jones, Jr., 79, of 1900 Glenn Street, Danville, VA died Sunday, August 11, 2013 at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born November 5, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, VA, he was the son of the late Ivory Jones, Sr. and the late Gracie McLaughlin Jones. He was married to Dottie Mae Jones, who survives.

He was a veteran of the United States Army.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Joann Jones of Danville, VA and Cathy Jones of Moorestown, NJ; two sons, Ivory “Tony” Jones (Deborah) of Middletown, DE and Mark Anthony Jones of Philadelphia, PA; five sisters, Nancy Walker, Edith Witherspoon , Faye Jackson (Jimmy), Marilyn Cramer and Margie Jones, all of Philadelphia, PA; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Ruby Venney, Thelma Fitzgerald and Clara Wallace and one brother, Robert Eugene Jones.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, August 19, 2013 at 12:00 Noon from the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Herbert Dickerson officiating.

Harry Thomas Martin, 66, of 328 Country Lane, Danville, VA, died, Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born December 12, 1946 in Pittsylvania County, VA, he was the son of the late Otis Martin and Frances Jones Martin, who survives.

He was a Veteran of the United States Army.

In addition to his mother, survivors include one daughter, Shanda Harkley (Donavon) of Lawrenceville, GA; five sisters, Carolyn Harris of Danville, VA, Joyce Martin of Columbus, OH, Pamela Jones and Sheila Anderson both of Chatham, VA Valerie Patterson of Brookneal, VA; one brother, James Martin of Dry Fork, VA; one granddaughter, Breia Jefferson; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a

Corine Johnson Williams, 93, of 835 Blackwell Rd., Yanceyville, NC, died, Thursday, August 15, 2013 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Born August 19, 1919 in Miccosukee, Florida, she was the daughter of the late Blake Johnson and Anna Johnson Wright. She was married to the late Charlie Williams.

She was the last survivor of her generation.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Perry of Eden, NC and Loretta Foster of Yanceyville, NC; one son, Charlie Williams of Greensboro, NC and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by eleven sisters and two brothers.

Susan Marie “Susie” Boulware, 65, of 101 Grand Avenue, Danville, VA went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 after being in declining health for the past six years.

Mrs. Boulware was born in Danville, VA on October 13, 1947 a daughter to the late Henry Lee Boulware and Phoebe Hopkins Boulware. She had lived most of her life in Danville where she was a graduate of George Washington High School. She had worked for the former Dan River Mills and former Danville Knitting Mill for a number of years. Mrs. Boulware was last employed by Chase Precision Metals in Reidsville, NC where she worked in Quality Control. She was a member of Shady Oak Baptist Church. Mrs. Boulware loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren very much along with cooking and socializing with her friends.

Mrs. Boulware is survived by one daughter Leslie B. Sheets (Donald), of Cascade, VA, one sister Judith B. Handy of Danville, VA, three grandchildren Ashlee N. Jarrett, Briana P. Jarrett, Caribbea T. Sheets, one grandson Damian Bowen, two great granddaughters Erin Bowles, Grace Dockery and several nieces and nephews, two very special friends and helpers Joann Manuel, Phyllis Bickford and others.

Blackberry Slump This recipe uses blackberries, but you could easily use any berry you would like, such as blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries.

INGREDIENTS Dumplings: 1 cup all purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 Tbsp sugar 2 Tbsp butter 1/3 cup whole milk Berries: 4 cups fresh or frozen (defrosted and drained) blackberries 1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar (depending on how sweet your berries and how sweet you would like your slump to be) 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1/3 cup water Whipping cream or vanilla ice cream for topping METHOD 1. In a medium sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Cut the butter into small cubes and add to the flour. Using a pastry cutter, two knives, or your clean hands, cut the butter into the flour until the flour resembles a coarse meal. Add the milk all at once and stir until the flour is just moistened. Handling the dough as little as possible, form into a ball. Set aside.

2. In a 2-qt saucepan, add the berries, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, lemon zest, and water.

Heat until boiling, stirring a few times so that the berries are well coated with the sauce. Once the berry mixture is boiling, tear off spoonful chunks from the dough ball and drop onto the fruit around the edges of the pot. You should have enough dough for 6 dumplings. Cover the pot and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook for 25 minutes, without peeking at the dumplings.

Place dumplings in serving bowls and top with berries. Serve with cream or ice cream. Serve hot or chilled.

Junior Leadership Southside Names 2013-2014 Class Created as the class project of Leadership Southside XIV, Junior Leadership Southside will begin its fifth program year with an opening orientation in September 2013.

Junior Leadership Southside is an eight month program providing leadership orientation and development to local high school juniors and seniors. The program includes monthly sessions ranging from three to five hours in length and held on school holidays, after school, and on Saturdays. Program meetings will begin in October and the class will conclude with a graduation ceremony to be held in April 2014. Monthly sessions will include speakers and panelists providing a holistic approach to leadership orientation and development. The fifth Junior Leadership Southside class will consist of 26 Juniors and Seniors from the region.
