The Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) benefits from local Fundraising with URW Community Federal Credit Union

Fundraising for the 2015 Danville Half Marathon netted a profit of over 2,000. Jack Whisler with Children’s Miracle Network graciously accepts the charitable donation from proceeds raised during the most recent successful half marathon race in Danville VA. The half marathon was sponsored by URW Community Federal Credit Union. Every year CMN Hospitals treat some 17 million babies and children for every disease and injury imaginable. URW proudly accepted a plaque in honor of their most recent and ongoing dedication in assisting The Children’s Miracle Network with their fundraising efforts. Pictured Below, from left to right Gary D. Waldman Half Marathon Organizer and CFO & Treasurer with The Danville Regional Foundation, Jack Whisler with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals/Centra Health in Lynchburg VA, and L.C. Listen Carefully Osama bin Laden went to heaven and was greeted by George Washington, who slapped him and yelled, “How dare you try to destroy the nation I helped conceive?” Patrick Henry then approached and punched Osama in the nose. James Madison entered and kicked him in the shin. An angry Thomas Jefferson whacked Osama over the head with a cane. The thrashing continued as John Randolph, James Monroe, and 66 other early Americans came in and unleashed their anger on the terrorist leader. Suddenly, as Osama lay writhing in unbearable pain, an angel appeared. “This is not what you promised me,” said Osama. “Come on, Osama,” the angel replied. “I told you there would be 72 Virginians waiting for you in heaven.”

The Athlete of the Year

--For whatever reason, there seemed to be a lot of fuss -- more than usual, at least -- made over one question: Who was the athlete of the year? Most people, I’m guessing, didn’t even know that there are still organizations that actually care enough to sit down and decide such things (in smoke-filled rooms, natch), but apparently there are. And depending on which source you hold most dear, you heard several different answers: The Associated Press chose Serena Williams; Sports Illustrated chose Stephen Curry; and the BBC made waves across the ocean for not choosing the new heavyweight champion of the world, Tyson Fury. (Fury, who may have the coolest name in boxing history, might have won in the worst fight in history, and he may have possibly given the worst post-fight performance in history ... singing Aerosmith and offending everyone else with his mouth.) Golfer Jordan Spieth tripped off the tongues of more than a few pundits as well. And then, of course, there were the curiosities. According to Google, the most searched-for term in 2015 was Lamar Odom, but chances are, the teeming masses weren’t interested in the retired basketball player’s lifetime stats. Caitlyn Jenner made it onto a bunch of lists, but I’m not quite sure how that relates to the world of sports other than an interesting asterisk for the record books. And poor Holly Holm. She superkicked the people’s champion to the face to become the undisputed bantamweight champion of the UFC world, and all anybody wants to talk about is the girl she beat. I have to admit, count me

among those who had their heart shattered along with Rhonda Rousey’s face. I was one of those holdouts when it came to mixed martial arts. In the beginning I bought the fight, and all I remember was the sumo wrestler getting his teeth blasted into the front row in the first fight, and then everyone else just rolling around the floor for a few hours. After that, I stubbornly clung to boxing until I realized the “sweet science” wasn’t all that sweet anymore. How thrilling is it to watch Floyd Mayweather hold his hands up and shake his head “no” and make a few hundred million dollars for the pleasure? Rousey only worked about two rounds in her three fights combined, but she reintroduced the sport to the world. Nobody was talking about boxing like they were talking about MMA this year, and she deserves the lion’s share of the credit. But in the end, it wasn’t a lion that mattered most. Serena didn’t win the Grand Slam, Rousey didn’t beat Holm, and Spieth, as amazing as he was, didn’t win them all either. So who was the athlete of the year? The horse, of course! Why does everyone have such a hard time saying it? Was it because they misspelled the horse’s name? American Pharoah -- that’s your athlete of the year. It’s not a slam on any athlete to lose to an animal, in this case an incredibly beautiful one from New Jersey that glided to the Triple Crown, drawing crowds that rivaled presidential campaigns and rock concerts. In 2015, that horse, as briefly as he was around, was truly a sight to see. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

“Hot Sauce, Eggs, And Children” It was this morning, as I write this. People often ask how a columnist finds ideas about which to write. If that columnist has children, ideas find him. I was preparing to eat a hard boiled egg. I understand the odd reactions I am liable to receive over what I write next: when doing so, I no longer use salt; I use hot sauce. For starters, I like hot sauce on most everything. My refrigerator will never have less than a dozen assorted bottles of sweat-inducing, taste-bud-tempting bottles at a time. My usage of hot sauce on boiled eggs, though, is a recent thing. So much so that my oldest daughter, a very sensible sort, gasped in horror when she saw what I was doing. “Mom!” she said in disbelief, “why is dad putting hot sauce on his boiled egg?” I do not know why they always ask their mother these questions. We have been married for almost twenty-two years, and she is still normally as surprised as they are over my various oddities. On this occasion, though, she actually did know the answer.

“He is not using salt anymore; he wants to keep his blood pressure low.” It was in response to that answer that my youngest daughter, without so much as split second of hesitation, asked, “Then why did he have kids?”

Westwood Middle School Good News December 2015 The Guide Right Program of KAPPA ALPHA PSI Alumni Chapter of Danville, Virginia, donated coats and belts to Westwood Middle students on Thursday, December 17, 2015. Marvin Martin and Edward Thomas made the presentation to students. The Westwood Middle School faculty, staff, and students collected new toys during the month of December to donate to the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the US Marine Corp. The toys were given to children whose parents couldn’t afford to buy them toys for Christmas.

Teach Kids Financial Lessons For The New Year At the dawn of a new year, many adults resolve to make positive changes in the year ahead. But New Year’s resolutions aren’t exclusive to adults. In fact, New Year’s resolutions provide a great opportunity for parents to teach their kids about setting goals and maintaining the discipline necessary to realize those goals. Many adults express a desire to save more money when making their New Year’s resolutions. Parents who want to instill financial responsibility in their children and encourage youngsters to save money right alongside mom and dad can do so in various ways. • Start giving kids an allowance in return for doing their chores. A great way to teach kids about money management is to give them an allowance in return for doing their weekly chores. This teaches kids that they must earn their money and also teaches them to budget. Resist the temptation to give kids extra money or advances on their allowances, as doing so can compromise the lesson that kids need to budget. • Encourage kids to establish specific financial goals. Kids can benefit just like adults by setting specific financial goals. If kids have their eye on a new gadget or gaming console, encourage them to create a savings log that tracks how much they’re saving each week and how close they are getting to reaching their goal. As kids’s balances increase and they get closer to their goal, they may grow just as excited as adults do when they see their investments perform well. • Match kids’ contributions. Another great way to encourage kids to save money is to match the deposits they make into their accounts. Whether it’s teenagers saving for their first car or younger kids saving for a new bike, kids may be more likely to save if they know their contributions are being matched. Parents can explain that matching is not just for kids, as many moms and dads benefit from employers who match their retirement contributions. • Let kids make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, especially when it comes to money. Many adults feel the best financial lessons they learned were a byproduct of a mistake they made that forced them to reexamine their approach to money. Letting kids make financial mistakes now may help them avoid bigger and more costly mistakes down the road. • Teach impulse control. Another valuable financial lesson parents can instill in their kids is controlling their impulses with regard to spending. Many adults exercise impulse control by waiting 24 hours to make purchases. In this scenario, adults who see something they like online or in-store that they did not intend to buy will wait a day after seeing the item before deciding whether or not to purchase it. That 24-hour waiting period often prevents people from buying products they don’t need. Kids can benefit just as much from following this guideline. In the interim between seeing the item and deciding whether or not to buy it, discuss with kids the pros and cons of buying the item. This can teach them to carefully consider each of their purchases, making them more responsible consumers for the rest of their lives. New Year’s resolution season provides a great opportunity for parents to impart valuable financial lessons to their children.

How to get more money from your tax return…

Yes, it is tax time again. That magical time of the year right after Christmas when many of us are looking forward to getting a refund from the government. I don’t know about everyone else but I want to get back as much as I can so why pay someone to do your taxes if you don’t have to. There are lots of resources out there to help you get your taxes done…for free! The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help for families or individuals with incomes of $54,000 or less. This year there are locations in Danville (434-793-5627), Chatham (434-432-8250) and Caswell County (336694-7447). These sites will prepare your federal and state taxes at no charge. The volunteers are IRS certified and you can have your money in your account within just a few days. If you are interested in filing online yourself you can go to www.myfreetaxes.com and file for free. Or, if you are a member of URW Credit Union you can log onto our online banking service (Netbranch) and there is a link to use Turbo Tax service for free also.

Veteran’s Charities Need Our Support Now that the holidays have come and gone, it’s time to think about how we’ll handle the new year -- and that includes what charities we’ll support. The big thing, as always, is to avoid the scammers. Unfortunately, when it comes to supporting veterans and active-duty endeavors, the scammers are out in full force, either pocketing the cash or misdirecting it. Here are two sites to investigate to make sure you don’t give money to a scam operation: Charity Navigator (www. charitynavigator.org) and GuideStar (www. guidestar.org). One of the best and most worthwhile for-military charities I know of is Operation Gratitude (www.operationgratitude. com). I’ve written about it before, coaxing you to send a few dollars when it’s trying to hit a big goal, such as their next 100,000 packages. Now I’m asking you to consider regular monthly giving. Each $15 you donate will get one box of goodies mailed to a service member. The boxes are loaded

At the OpGrat website you can choose to send a check, sign up for monthly giving or even have it taken out on your credit card. It’s up to you. If you absolutely can’t give money, can you write letters? Each box that’s sent out includes a few letters, written by schoolkids, retired military, families ... everybody pitches in. Offering Complete Stump Grinding/Removal (includes grass rehabilitation) Tree & Shrub Removal Landscaping Services * I was painting recently and had a half-can left over when I was done. To preserve the paint, I cut out a circle of wax paper and laid it directly on the surface of the paint, then sealed the can properly. This keeps a layer of scum from forming. 1. Name the group whose debut single was “New York Mining Disaster 1941.” 2. Which Jackson Browne song was added to the collector’s edition of the 2001 soundtrack for the 1994 film “Forrest Gump”? 3. Name the group that released “From the Beginning.” 4. What was the name of the single hit by the The O’Kaysions? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “I’d have thought that with time thoughts of her would leave my head, I was wrong and I find just one thing makes me forget.” Answers 1. The Bee Gees, in 1967. They were inspired to write the song while sitting in a stairway during a power outage. A mining catastrophe in Wales in 1966 was fresh in their minds, when 144 people were killed. 2. “Running on Empty,” which Browne released in 1977. 3. Emerson, Lake & Palmer, in 1972 on their “Trilogy” album. 4. “Girl Watcher,” in 1968. They were originally known as The Kays. 5. “Red, Red Wine,” first recorded by singersongwriter Neil Diamond in 1967. UB40 released a reggae version in 1983. The group saw “Diamond” as a writer credit, unaware that it was Neil Diamond who’d written the song. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
