“The Man Who Stops Advertising To Save Money Is Like The Man Who Stops The Clock To Save Time.” -Thomas Jefferson
Tips to Help You Weather the Snowy Winter Family Features: When snow is in the forecast, a fully stocked shed and plan of attack can help you weather the storm. Regardless of the predicted snowfall totals, it’s best to have the appropriate tools on hand for your home, your car and yourself. -The driveway To clear snow from large, flat areas, a snow blower is the best tool. The innovative Snow Joe iON Hybrid Snow Blower eliminates the need to run out for gas during a storm and operates on both battery and corded electric power, giving you extended clearing time. Begin by using the rechargeable battery to clear the areas furthest away from your home and utilize the corded electrical power for extended use as you get closer to your house. Clear a path as it snows, if possible, to avoid a bigger end job. Once all of the snow has been removed, cover any slippery patches with salt or sand. -Sidewalks and pathways Clearing sidewalks and pathways is not only courteous to your neighbors, but in many areas it’s the law. For lighter snow, putting down ice melt a few hours before a storm can melt snow up to 2 inches deep and keep ice from forming. For larger storms, it’s advised to remove smaller amounts of snow several times instead of waiting until the snow stops falling. This results in less strenuous activity and also allows the sun to warm up the pavement, preventing ice from forming. -The car It’s important to keep your car stocked up for an emergency, just as you would your home. Fill your trunk with a small survival kit, including a blanket, water, flashlight and extra batteries. Another important tool to keep in your car in the winter is an ice scraper. The Snow Joe illum-n-Broom is equipped with an ice scraper and snow broom to push snow off the car without scratching the paint. The all-in-one unit also features a flashlight and emergency blinker, so you can address hazards and drive safely. -Yourself While removing snow may make you work up a sweat, it’s still important to dress warmly and keep your body covered, especially parts of the body that are vulnerable to frostbite, such as your fingers, toes and face. Make sure that you are equipped with a warm jacket, thick gloves and socks, and a hat that covers your ears. Dress in layers so that you can take off pieces of clothing as your body warms up.

Let’s face it--English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant or ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple...

English muffins were not invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. And why is it that writers write, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn’t the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So, one moose, 2 meese? One index, two indices? Is cheese the plural of choose? If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? In what language do people recite at a play, and play at a recital? Ship by truck, and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? Park on driveways and drive on parkways? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another? When a house burns up, it burns down. You fill in a form by filling it out, and an alarm clock goes off by going on. When the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it? Now if you flunked English. it’s not your fault. The silly language doesn’t quite know whether it’s coming or going.

Alabama at Last
--When you don’t know anything about history, it’s easy to say things like, “we live in a very spectacular time.” Phrases like, “never been done before” and “greatest of all-time” get tossed around and played with. While some of this is true -- we, as a species, build off of our experience to progress to another level -- most of the time they’re just empty platitudes. Great people slip from this vale of tears all the time, and unless they made one mark to be remembered for, their fame is fleeting. The Alabama Crimson Tide will never have that problem. Sports, better than any other discipline, with the possible exception of the folks behind the Periodic Table of Elements, keeps score. We have lists and lists filled with names with numbers attached; the lists grow longer, but the names never fade. In America, particularly over the past seven years, Alabama, with its four most-recent championships and 16 overall, and its coach, Nick Saban, has made its mark. With their thrilling win over Clemson on Jan. 11, the Crimson Tide may have done something even more important: They may have saved football. The sport is reeling. When the Fresh Prince of Philadelphia is starring in movies about concussions, your sport is in trouble. When grown men with arcade-like nicknames dressed up like Bengal tigers push and shove coaches after making illegal hits to the head on national TV, setting up the opposing team for a win, your sport is in trouble. When fans start worrying about what defensive back said on Instagram

or Twitter both before and after the game more than the game itself, your sport is in trouble. When you finally get a championship playoff and you move the games to New Year’s Eve and nobody watches and the games are lackluster and dull ... again, there’s a problem. And while many people will say, actually, it’s kind of getting boring watching Alabama win every year, you have to ask them if they were watching. Because as soon as the 30-minute pre-game show with every recording artist we’re supposed to know singing the same song that nobody can ever sing better than Ray Charles or Whitney Houston did finally end and the actual game started, it was like ... transcendent. It takes schools like Clemson and Alabama to fill a stadium with orange and red, split right down the middle like that. The telecast by ESPN was incredible; I was flipping through all 18 of its channels getting every play and loving every second of it. Two teams battling it out like giants from the first to the last play. Derrick Henry rips off a touchdown run. Deshaun Watson -- the guy who had everyone saying “Vince Young” for a quarter until firmly cementing his own name into the upper echelon of the game -would stand up like they called offsides and then suddenly snap like a cat hearing a vacuum cleaner, tossing darts all over the field (and covering the point spread ... just saying). And wouldn’t you know? Nick Saban really does know how to smile. What a spectacular time, right? Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Centra welcomes Joshua Alley, MD, Bariatric Surgeon LYNCHBURG, Va. – Centra is pleased to welcome Joshua Alley, M.D., to offer bariatric surgery, which is weight loss surgery, to the region. A Lynchburg native, Dr. Alley handled 650 bariatric surgery cases over his eight-year career, most recently in Pennsylvania. Dr. Alley also will handle general surgery cases through Centra Medical Group Surgical Specialists. As obesity trends continue to rise across the country, Dr. Alley brings another dimension to Centra’s comprehensive care. Dr. Alley specializes in the three most common, minimally invasive bariatric surgeries, including laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic adjustable gastric band. Centra Weight Loss Services will offer a continuum of care, including nutrition education, health maintenance and bariatric surgery. Weight loss surgery is a great fit for Centra, which is well positioned to offer a myriad of related services, including Centra Medical Group Piedmont Psychiatric Center, Centra Medical Group Plastic Surgery Center, Centra Sleep Disorders Center and Centra Rehabilitation. Dr. Alley treats obesity as a disease, caring for each patient with compassion to help them reach their weight loss goals and live a more active and fuller life. “Centra has a strong reputation in this community for offering high-quality care,” Dr. Alley said. “Bariatric surgery can extend that reputation into a new field. We will have a premier program and are putting together all the pieces so patients can have a collaborative, lifelong relationship and a skilled surgery team.” According to research, bariatric surgery benefits patients with type 2 diabetes and significantly reduces vascular events, sleep apnea, hypertension, joint disease and cholesterol. Studies also show that individuals with obesity live longer after having bariatric surgery.
Don’t grab for just any loan that’s wrapped in shiny foil! Come on in to your URW credit union and know what you’re getting–it will always be the sweetest deal!
Bariatric surgery consults are available at Centra Lynchburg Medical Center on Nationwide Drive and Centra Gretna Medical Center on McBride Lane. Dr. Alley will host regular seminars throughout central Virginia to provide an overview of bariatric surgery in Lynchburg and Gretna. These free seminars are open to the public. For more information on weight loss surgery and upcoming seminars, visit HYPERLINK “http://www.CentraWeightLoss.com” CentraWeightLoss.com or call 434.200.3901.

It’s Tax Season Again
We all look forward to that tax refund. It’s the start of a new year and a tax refund can be just the boost we need to get bills paid and get our finances back on track. Don’t you want to get all of your money back instead of just part of it? Did you know that you can get all of your money deposited into your account in just a few days? It’s true! Why in the world would you give up part of your tax refund by getting a loan from your tax preparer…and why in the world would you pay to get your taxes done if you didn’t have to? Every year in January my mission is to make the community aware that if your household income is less than $60,000.00 there is a resource available to get you taxes done for FREE. That’s right I said FREE! Our community has volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) sites that provide this service for free. These volunteers are IRS certified and they can file your taxes electronically. You will have your refund back in just a few days. Visit www.myfreetaxes.com or call 793-5627 for more information.

* Although it has been a mild winter so far, I am still having issues with cracked skin around my fingers. I have found a treatment that works to ease the discomfort. At night, I slather petroleum jelly on the cracks, then follow up with a pair of cotton gloves. I leave these on while I am watching television and puttering around the house. I find them uncomfortable to sleep in, but you could try that instead. I cover the worst cracks with a bandage. They are noticeably better the next day.

As temperatures decrease during the fall and winter months, energy usage and costs tend to climb. These five energy-saving tips for your home will ensure the comfort of your family and your wallet. 1. Adjust your thermostat. Lower the heat on your thermostat while you are away from home and before you go to bed. Better yet, invest in a programmable thermostat so you don’t have to give it a second thought. 2. Seal gaps around windows and doors. Cracks and gaps around windows and doors can let cold drafts into your home. Weather-stripping or caulking will seal these problem areas and keep your home warmer, without having to turn up the heat. 3. Insulate well to protect your home from the cold. Add insulation to your basement walls, headers or attic to make a noticeable difference in the temperature of your home and its energy consumption. A mineral wool product specifically designed for thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt, is ideal. This type of batt insulation will also provide protection from fire, moisture and unwanted noise. Adding insulation is one of the simplest and most-cost effective ways to increase home energy efficiency. 4. Make use of natural sources of heat. Pull back your curtains to let natural light in. The sun can help to warm a room with its rays on a bright fall or winter day. If there are any large windows in your home that don’t receive much sunlight, keep the curtains closed to form a barrier from the cold. 5. Use ceiling fans to your advantage. In the winter, set the fan to rotate clockwise. The blades will pull the air up and around, redirecting warm air that rises back down into the living space. The effect can help you lower your thermostat by two degrees in the winter. While cutting back on energy may seem more challenging as the weather gets colder, it doesn’t have to be. There are many no- or low-cost methods to conserve energy that can provide consistent savings over time.
