Louis “Jody” Dexter Hudgins
Mr. Louis “Jody” Dexter Hudgins of 757 Sixth Street died suddenly on Saturday, December 26, 2015 in North Myrtle Beach, SC. He was born in Danville on March 11, 1945, a son of the late Malcolm Hudgins and Clara McCann Hudgins Adkins. Jody was an admirer of automobiles and especially classic cars. He had retired from Hargrave Military Academy as Maintenance Supervisor after many years of service. He was a member of Emanuel Church Of The Brethren. He is survived by his wife; Gay Jones Hudgins, one son, L. D. Hudgins, Jr. and one daughter, Lisa Payne, two grandsons and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. from Emanuel Church of the Brethren with the Reverend Curtis English officiating. Lakie Pendleton Lawless
Mrs. Lakie Pendleton Lawless, age 96, of 110 Hayes Court, Danville, VA died on January 10, 2016 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, Danville, VA. Mrs. Lawless was born on September 23, 1919, in Patrick County, VA, to the late Ellis Pendleton and Clemontine DeHart Pendleton. She moved to Danville in 1956 from Fieldale, VA. She worked at Kmart where she retired as the Manager of the camera department and was a member of the Sandy Shores Baptist Church. Mrs. Lawless is survived by two sons, Ronnie R. Lawless and wife Teresa of Danville, VA, Steven A. Lawless of Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister, Queenie V. Dilworth of Winston Salem, NC; two grandchildren; and five Great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents Mrs. Lawless was predeceased by her loving husband James Anderson Lawless; Four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Scearce officiating. Eula Willis Dix
Eula Willis Dix, age 100, died on January 12, 2016 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. She was born on March 10, 1915, in Franklin County, VA, to the late Thomas Edward Willis and Ruth Ellen Bryant Willis.
Mrs. Dix worked at Dan River Mills in the dressing room for 47 years and was of the Methodist faith. She was a member of Schoolfield Methodist for 60 years before transferring to Trinity Methodist. She is survived by her sons; Bill Dix and wife Rachel of Rocky Mt., NC, Dexter Dix and wife Pam of Providence Forge, VA, and Douglas Dix and wife Rosemary of Richmond, VA; daughters, Patsy Dix Robertson and husband Tom of Sumter, SC and Barbara Dix Oakes and husband Marvin of South Boston, VA; Geraldine Dix wife of Roger; 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents Mrs. Dix was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Woodrow W. Dix; children, Connie Fay Dix and Roger Dix; grandsons, James Oakes and Marc Dix; 5 brothers and 4 sisters. Oscar Pena, age 96, of 2445 Mt. Cross Rd., Danville, VA, died on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Riverside Health Care Center. He was born on May 28, 1919, in El Paso, TX, to the late Bunkishi Suzuki and Mary Pena. Oscar worked as a bartender and restaurant manager and was of the Catholic faith. He was also a veteran of the United States Army in the infantry division during WWII. He is survived by his daughters, Judy Pena and Marie Pena of the residence and son, Michael Pena of Danville, VA.; sisters Eustolia Kregal of TX and Carmen Flores of TX. In addition to his parents Mr. Pena was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Pena and brothers, Emilio Pena, Ismael Pena, and Arnold Pena. Naomi Jean Beavers, 63, of 328 Parkland Drive died on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at her residence after a decline in health since 2010. She was born October 24, 1952 in Newhall, WV a daughter of the late Ed George Beavers and Rosa Wheeler Beavers. Naomi had lived most of her life Bristol prior to moving to Danville in 2011. She had worked in the restaurant business for over 30 years. She was a member of Central Boulevard Church of God and was active with the Sonshine Ladies. Naomi was known for her faith in the Lord, her dedication to her church and her loving compassion for her family. Survivors include two sisters, Linda Rife of the residence and Daisy McClanahan of Grundy, VA, a brother Ed Beavers, Jr. and wife, Karen of Laurel, MD; a very special nephew, Josh Rife and wife Chaddi; and a special great niece, Cadence Rife; nieces, Caroline May, Donna Looney, and Loretta Ratliff; nephew, Ernie Looney; great nieces, Abby May and Chandra Hess; great nephew, Trevor May; and her special pet, Molly. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by and infant brother; a sister, Loretta Frances Looney; and a nephew, Edward Beavers, III. Charles Martin, 55, of 161 Natalie Lane Danville, VA died on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at his residence after a decline in health for several years. Mr. Martin was born in Clark, NV on May 30, 1960, son of the late Kenneth Harold Martin and the late Gloria Margaret Taylor Martin. He spent all of his life in the Danville area where he was a glass inspector at Brockway until he retired due to disability. He enjoyed assembling and flying model airplanes. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include daughters, Kelly Berkley (Scott) of Dry Fork, VA and Lindsey May (Brian) of Richlands, NC; sister, Lisa Martin of Danville, VA; brother Danny Martin of Danville, VA; step-son Cory Hagler of Camp Pendleton, CA; and six grandchildren. Ronald Lee Marshall, II, 50, of 3009 Joy Circle died Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Hospice Palliative Care Center of Alamance Caswell after a decline in health for several months. Robbie Lee was born in Danville on March 3, 1965, a son of the late Ronald R.L. Marshall, Sr., and Dorothy Daniel Marshall. Robbie Lee lived all his life in Danville where he was a graduate of Tunstall High School class of 1983 and then Danville Community College where he got an Electrical Degree. He was of the Christian faith. Survivors include a daughter, Marlaina M. Ball, and husband, Allen, of Sutherlin; a brother, Chris Marshall, and wife, Sue, of Danville; a sister, Angel Parsons, and husband, David, of Rockville, MD; two nephews, Gabriel Hernandez, Ian Parsons. Special thanks to Robbie Lee’s Aunts, Uncles, family and many friends for all their love and kindness. Franklin Leon Griffin, 74, of 4582 Mountain Hill Road, Milton, NC, died on January 17, 2016 at his residence after being in declining health for the past two years.
Leon was born in Danville, VA on April 14, 1941 a son to the late Robert Snow Griffin and Annie Snead Griffin. He had lived most of his life in the Mountain Hill Community where had worked as a Brick Mason all of his adult life until his health started to decline. He was of the Holiness Faith. Leon was formerly married to Mary Beth Griffin. Leon is survived by one son Jon Franklin Griffin & wife Julie of Ringgold, VA, one daughter Sara G. Bobola & husband Matt of Reston, VA, one sister Forresteen G. Bowling & husband Thomas of Danville, VA and one brother Edward “Fuzzy’ Griffin of Milton, NC. He was predeceased by his parents, one son, Andy Leon Griffin, one sister Raynell G. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Gray and husband Jonathan Peter Gray and her grandson Christopher Patrick Gray all of Providence, NC. She is also survived by her cousin Peggy Pennock who was raised with June as a sister, Peggy’s son Craig Pennock and daughter Carol Spencer all of Florida. Elsie Carr Slayton, a vibrant member of Danville’s business and social networks, died on January 12, 2016, in her home. She owned and operated several building supply and plumbing businesses, including Saunder’s Building Supply, CJS, Westover Plumbing, and was a partner in Plumbing and Mill Supply. She was born in Keeling, Va. on August 23, 1921 to the late Rosa and Paul Carr, and was the wife of the late Willard Hodnett Slayton. Her three children are the late Thomas C. Slayton, and Anne S. Lisa Atkinson McDowell, 57, of 864 Homestead Trail, Ringgold, Va. passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at her residence. She was born January 3, 1959 in Pittsylvania County, Va. to Susie Atkinson Arrington and the late Edgar Parrish Atkinson. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilton “Junior” McDowell. Ms. McDowell worked for Nestle for seven years prior to her decline in health. She was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to her mother, Ms. McDowell is survived by her brother, Gerald Atkinson of Danville, Va.; three step sisters; two step brothers; and several aunts and uncles, as well as many friends. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2016 at Danville Memorial Gardens with Rev. Joe Kendrick officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday, January 14, 2016 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services, Mt. Hermon Chapel, and at other times at the residence, 864 Homestead Trail, Ringgold, Va. Richard Odell West
Richard Odell West, 89, of 103 Oakhaven Drive, Danville, Va. passed away Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born October 22, 1926 in Roanoke, Va. to the late Alice Grissom West and the late Henry Odell West. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Mae Belle Walton West on July 1, 2013. Mr. West proudly served with the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He was stationed in North Africa during the Sicily Invasion and also served in Germany. Mr. West owned and operated the company his father founded, West Piano Company, where he started work at the age of ten. Mr. West was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church of Danville. He is survived by his daughters, Beverly Leigh West and husband, Bill of Ruckersville, Va., Shirley Mae West Ralston and husband, Jeff of Houston, Tx., and Leah West Gourley and husband, Brian of Durham, N.C.; his son, Gary Richard West and wife, Linda of Newport News, Va.; his brother, Donovan S. West and wife, Mary of Spartanburg, S.C.; his grandchildren: Catherine, Alex, Diane, Virginia, Margreta, Hannah, Brennan, and Matthew; and his great-grandchildren: Harper, CeCe, and Jane. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the residence, 103 Oakhaven Dr., Danville. Wyatt Dickens, 88, of 137 Charles T o w n e Drive, Danville, Va. passed away Sunday, January 17, 2016 while a resident of Roman Eagle Health and Rehab, Danville. She was born in Danville on January 11, 1928 to the late Janie Walker Jones and the late Conrad L. Jones. She was married to Randolph Dickens, who survives, of the residence. She was predeceased by three husbands, Otis Campbell, J. Melvin Wyatt and Nelson R. Haley. Mrs. Dickens was a selfemployed beautician and owned and operated Ma-
mies Beauty Salon for many years. She was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church and was very active in a number of organizations, including the Pythians of Martinsville, Improved Order of Red Men and Degree of Pocahontas Wyanette Council #22 of Danville. Over the years she had been faithful to her church and served in many capacities on various committees and boards of the church. Survivors include a son, Mark Thomas Campbell and Ronda Pressley Campbell of Vernon Hill, Va., a sister, Ola J. LaPrade of Danville, two grandchildren, Nathaniel Campbell and wife Molly and Jaynee Campbell and fiancé Josh Hudson, and two great-grandchildren Braelyn Elizabeth Ayers and Finley William Campbell. In addition to her parents and former husbands, Mrs. Dickens was predeceased by a brother, Sanford Aaron Jones. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 pm, Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Norris Funeral Services, Inc., West End Chapel, 511 Church Ave., Danville, VA 24541.
