Harbor Freight Insert Inside! Danville Regional Medical Center Breaks Ground on Chatham Diagnostic Imaging Center Danville, Va. (January 20, 2016) –– Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC) representatives and community officials today were part of a groundbreaking ceremony for the addition of the Chatham Diagnostic Imaging Center. According to Market President and DRMC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Alan Larson, the new center will provide leading-edge technology and services to improve the health of those we serve. “This project symbolizes so clearly the mission and vision of DRMC. Improving the quality of life of our neighbors and the wellbeing of our community is our priority.” Spencer Thomas, DRMC Chief Operating Officer (COO) added that it is important for DRMC to provide convenient access to quality healthcare for all citizens in Pittsylvania County. “This center fulfills a commitment by providing demanding imaging services for the Chatham community – including digital x-ray, ultrasound and digital mammography.” Other renovations include exterior upgrades, interior restorations and upgrades to the building’s common areas. In addition the facility will also have office space for specialist physicians and LabCare services. In partnership with Dr. Minesh Shah and Chatham Family Medical Center, extended hours will also be available. Numerous community officials were on hand for the announcement including Mayor Roy Byrd, Town of Chatham. “Chatham Family Medical Center has served many community members throughout the years and I am excited about the expansion and addition of Chatham Diagnostic Imaging Center” Mayor Byrd said. Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jessie Barksdale said, “We are here to celebrate the visible beginning and milestone of a great healthcare service. This project has required leadership, foresight and careful planning. DRMC is a partner who celebrates our vision and aspirations of providing excellent healthcare for the citizens of our community.” “On behalf of Pittsylvania County and especially the Chatham community, I want to thank DRMC for the Chatham Diagnostic Imaging Center.” Barksdale added. “We continue to look for ways to provide quality healthcare services to all individuals in this region, and this is another demonstration of this hospital’s commitment to Pittsylvania County residents,” added Larson. The center is expected to be operational by late summer 2016. ### About Danville Regional Medical Center Danville Regional is the leading medical center in the Dan River Region of Virginia and North Carolina providing open heart surgery, spinal surgery and advanced cancer treatment. EMAIL Should Kids Witness Childbirth? A True Story... It was late at night and Heidi, who was expecting her second child, was home alone with her 3-year old daughter Katelyn. When Heidi started going into labor, she called “911”. Due to a power outage at the time, only one paramedic responded to the call. The house was very, very dark, so the paramedic asked Katelyn to hold a flashlight high over her mommy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby. Very diligently, Katelyn did as she was asked. Heidi pushed and pushed, and after a little while Connor was born. The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and spanked him on his bottom. Connor began to cry. The paramedic then thanked Katelyn for her help and asked the wide-eyed 3-year old what she thought about what she had just witnessed. Katelyn quickly responded, “He shouldn’t have crawled in there in the first place. Smack him again!”

It’s OK to Win ---
How many of you parents work hard all week only to watch your kid get yelled at by some borderline psychopath coach on the weekends? Why do we all stand there on one side of the field -- that we all pay to seed and mow, by the way -- watching somebody on the other side yell out their life’s frustrations? One day, I was watching a coach melt down, and I surveyed the parents on the sideline. There were lots of quality individuals watching the game in my estimate. Many of them drove Bavarianstyled cars, and you could tell they followed the maintenance guidelines. We easily outnumbered the maniacal person yelling at our kids by a factor of hundreds, but we did nothing. “Are you seeing this?” I remember asking one parent. He had a cowboy hat on. Seemed like a stand-up guy. Without even looking at me, he nodded. “Yup.” “I don’t understand this. When do we foment an uprising? We have nice rims on our cars ... we don’t need to take this.” “We also don’t have to coach,” he replied. Good point. We decide it’s a teaching moment for the kids: Don’t be that guy. The other day I was watching my nephew play flag football. It’s a tie score and there are parents telling their kids to “ease up on the throttle.” They
drive Porsches and Audis that go zero to 60 mph in 5 seconds flat that they got by being ruthless adversaries in the business world all week, but now we have to stand around and root for a tie on a freezing weekend morning in January? I look at my sister as the “teaching moment” starts getting bandied about by the coach. He’s a nice guy. “You know what they say about ties?” I ask her. “No. What?” “It’s like kissing your sister.” She springs into action, cuts out the middleman and motions for her quarterback son to come over. “He’s been open all game on the right. They can’t defend him. End this.” Two seconds later he throws a strike, does a little dance, the game concludes and we apologize to the coach. “We have seat warmers,” we explain. We think it over and backtrack a bit on the drive home. We clarify to her son that winning at all costs isn’t the way to go ... that you don’t want to show up your opponents, be a good sport. And we explain that sports don’t have to be a chore. But it is OK to win. It’s more fun, and you don’t have to apologize for it if you do it the right way. “Monday At Church” One eye blinks open and rolls around searching for the source of the obnoxious noise. It quickly settles on the culprit: the alarm clock. The eye closes, and my brain wills itself to realize that the clock, far from being an enemy, is actually performing its job dutifully. But where did the night go? And why do I feel like I just ran a marathon? Memories of yesterday start flooding back into my mind. Great crowd, amazing spirit. I can still remember every note as the new choir soloist (Another Dana. We have three now. Unusual, that) absolutely knocks a grand slam belting out the words to “I Stand Redeemed.” I remember the faces of the visitors as I came around to greet them, and I remember the satisfaction of having to wait in line behind church members who were already doing so. I reach for the night stand and read my Bible for a while. Then I pray for each and every member by name, as I go through them one by one on my handy I-phone prayer list. Finally I am up and shuffling about, along with the rest of the family. We make a quick trip to the gym, bench press day for me, and someone is already on my favorite bench. I change things up, one must be flexible. Incline bench, decline bench, dumb bell presses, done. Not long later we all arrive at church and realize that Sunday leaves quite a mark on Monday. The rows of interlocking chairs are no longer straight enough for my OCD. In fact, they are all downright crooked. There are crumbs here and there, spillage from some of my sweet church kiddies, who need a snack when they need it, not later. Some of the hymnals are in the racks, some of them are in the seats, one or two are under the seats. My office? Disaster. I have a horse shoe crab upside down on my desk (don’t ask) and
slightly muddy footprints on the floor. Every corner of the desk not covered in horse shoe crab looks like an explosion in a paper factory. My wife is my secretary, and her office next door has fared no better. Ditto for the treasurer’s room one door down. I can now hear the custodians as they arrive to begin to make sense of the madness. I think I just heard someone mention the Richter Scale, preceded by a large number. This is not odd; it is normal. It is also not bad, but good. Proverbs 14:4 says, “Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.” People make messes. If you don’t want a mess, you might not ever want to have a Sunday service. But as pastors across the land read this, and reflect on their own marvelous Sundays that cause such messy Mondays, they would no doubt tell you the same thing I am about to say. It is worth it. You can have a clean crib (church) or a messy one. But there is much increase by the strength of the ox. Yes, people make messes. But they also bring visitors to hear the gospel, and form youth choirs, and adult choirs, and sing specials, and support missions, and gather round the altar to pray for one another. Those crumb crunchers leaving such a trail will one day be our deacons and Sunday school teachers, maybe even the pastor, if my plans to live to be one hundred do not work out. The papers on the desk represent lessons, and prayer requests, and messages, and crayon drawn pictures of, well, I think it may be a horse, given as a gift to the pastor. The horse shoe crab? Like I said, don’t ask. Welcome to Monday at church.

About the Book (Excerpts & Info): After being asked to speak at a memorial and realizing that many of the newer attorneys in the Southside community do not know the older attorneys who have been so influential, Ronald W. Williams knew he had to share his memories and personal reflections while he was still capable of doing so. These memories are priceless. Deftly constructed at 204 pages, Memories And Reflections Of An Old Lawyer: Grand Golden Tablets of Memories, Danville Bar Association is being aggressively promoted to appropriate markets with a focus on the biography & autobiography / lawyers & judges category. With U.S. wholesale distribution through Ingram and
Baker & Taylor, and pervasive online availability through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and elsewhere, Memories And Reflections Of An Old Lawyer meets consumer demand through both retail and library markets with a suggested retail price of $15.95. Additionally, Memories And Reflections Of An Old Lawyer can be ordered by retailers or wholesalers for the maximum trade discount price set by the author in quantities of ten or more from the Outskirts Press Direct bookstore at www.outskirtspress.com/bookstore ISBN: 9781478764922 Format: 5.5 x 8.5 paperback cream SRP: $15.95 For more information or to contact the author, visit www. outskirtspress.com/memoriesandreflectionofanoldlawyer. About the Author: A native of Danville, Virginia, some might call Ronald W. Williams a living local legend. From being a highly successful attorney for more than fifty years to serving as mayor of Danville, Mr. Williams has lived a life of service to his community. He has given of his time in so many civic and political capacities, far too numerous to name. He is currently the oldest actively-practicing member of the area bar associations. Ronald W. Williams was married to Lurae Baker Williams who died in an automobile accident in 1994. They had five children who have gone on to do
great things. Mr. Williams now has eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Williams later married his current wife, Hazel M. Kennedy Williams from Staunton, Virginia who had three children, one deceased, plus two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. They have maintained two residences, one in Williamsburg, Virginia and the other in Brosville, Virginia. For a long period of time, they traveled the world together, usually with the senior lawyers division of the American Bar Association. Mr. Williams is now in a wheelchair after a failed back operation, but continues to go into the office to practice personal injury law. They feel very blessed to have an extended family in their later years. God has been good. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Spectre” (PG-13) -James Bond’s latest adventure pits him against a timely challenge -- a far-reaching surveillance network threatens to unravel the espionage program. Doesn’t sound so bad, though, right? New technology must supplant the old ways, and Bond has always caused more destruction than planned. Unfortunately, 007 (Daniel Craig) has it on good authority that Spectre, a super-powerful conspiracy, has plans to hijack the surveillance network, essentially giving them immense power on the global stage. It’s slick and stylish and all that, but continuing with the current Bond trend, it’s getting more serious, more dark and more concerned with Bond’s role in the modern world. This is where it goes offtrack, even for longtime Bond fans. As the stories go deeper into Bond’s background, we’re forced to wonder if we care about that as much as the fun stuff.
Daniel Craig in “Spectre” Photo Credit: Sony Pictures homeless in the span of an afternoon. He’s a realestate broker who uses intimidation and the police to aggressively evict people from foreclosed homes, then sells the property at a profit. With a son and a mother to look out for, Dennis (Andrew Garfield) finds himself desperate after Carver forces them from their home. To make ends meet, Dennis finds himself working for the most evil man he’s ever met, and putting people through the same hell he experienced just to provide for his own family. It’s a gripping and effective dramatization of the horrors from the recent housing crisis. “Grandma” (R) -- Lily Tomlin stars as the titular relation, a causitic-yetcaring grandmother who goes the extra few miles to help her teen granddaughter get out of trouble and realize her mistakes. Sage (Julia Garner) is pregnant with her loser-boyfriend’s child and comes to Elle (Tomlin) for money for an operation. Elle doesn’t have the money, but she goes on a funding-drive, hitting up old friends, acquaintances and even her too-busy-for-you daughter for necessary cash. The whole thing is surprisingly short ... and unexpectedly fun. Tomlin’s charm and edge float things along at a fine pace.
“Crimson Peak” (R) -- Mia Wasikowska is the girl-in-peril in this Gothic romance from Guillermo Del Toro. Edith (Waskikowska) is a quiet literary type from Buffalo, New York, around the turn of the 20th century. After the brutal murder of her father, she’s whisked away by a dashing Englishman (Tom Hiddleston) to live in his castle with him and his twisted sister (Jessica Chastain). The castle is as spooky as they come, and as Edith realizes that her life is in danger, the mysteries mount up. The first thing viewers will notice is that it’s gorgeously creepy. Each TV RELEASES frame is a painting, and “David Bowie -- In His every shadow is crawling Own Words” with pointy detail. It could “Touched By an Angel: be that too much attention The Complete Series” was paid to the set and not “The Leftovers: Season 2” enough to the story. Either “Mountain Men: The Rules way, the mastery of color of the Wild Have Changed” and screen space brings “Power Rangers: Time out the goosebumps. Force -- The Complete Series” “99 Homes” (R) -- Rick “Hee Haw: Kornfield Carver (Michael Shannon Klassics” at his most stony and villainous) turns (c) 2016 King Features homeowners into the Synd., Inc.

Since prices can vary from region to region, don’t assume values listed are chiseled in stone. Also, don’t hesitate to contact established comic-book dealers in your area. *** Q: I have an old fruit jar that I inherited from my grandmother. Although I realize most fruit jars are fairly common, this one could be an exception. It is a Globe jar and appears to be handcrafted. It has a deep olive color, and I’ve never seen one like it before. -- Susan, Waco, Texas A: According to my favorite fruit jar price guide, 1000 Fruit Jars by Bill Schroeder (Collector Books), your jar is extremely rare. In olive green, it is valued at $1,000; olive amber, $1,000 plus; and aquaclear, $35 to $65. *** Q: I have some sterling flatware by Gorham in the Sovereign-Old pattern. Can you tell me when this pattern was introduced? -- Pat, Orchard Park, New York A: Your pattern was first offered in 1941. It is a handsome pattern and quite desirable. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.
--Q: We have a collection of 78-rpm and LP recordings, mostly classical. Could you provide me with the names of buyers? -- Janice, via e-mail A: I get questions about older recordings at least a dozen times each week, and my answer is always the same: Unless you have real rarities, there is little market for older recordings. I contacted used record dealers in Los Angeles, St. Louis, Dallas and New York, and I was told that it was difficult, if not impossible, to sell classical recordings in the secondary marketplace. You might consider donating your collection to a charity. *** Q: Can you recommend a good price guide for comics. My son has a collection of about 75 vintage issues, and I think we should investigate to see what the current values are. -- Susan, Springfield, Missouri A: There are three comic references I consult on a regular basis: “Golden Age Comics” by Alex G. Malloy and Stuart W. Wells III (Krause Books); “Official Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide” by Robert W. Overstreet (House of Collectibles); and “Comic Book Checklist and Price Guide” by Maggie Thompson, Brent Frankenhoff and Peter (c) 2016 King Features Bickford (Krause Books). Synd., Inc.

5 Things To Consider Before Expanding Your Home Homeowners who feel their homes are a little confined may be interested in expanding their homes to make them more comfortable and serviceable. Several questions may come to mind when homeowners are considering adding on to an existing home. Expanding a home requires careful consideration. While the end results can be spectacular, expansion is typically a long and costly process that will impede on the lifestyles of a home’s inhabitants during the renovation process. Expect loud noises, work crews and sawdust throughout the project. Depending on which areas are being renovated, residents may feel their lives are in upheaval until the expansion project has been completed. Familiarizing yourself with the expansion process and recognizing potential snags along the way can make planning and coping that much easier. 1. Many homeowners first consult with a contractor when mulling over expansions. However, you may want to speak with an architect first. He or she may be able to suggest renovations that fit with your neighborhood and appeal to prospective buyers when you decide to sell your home in the future. 2. Visit your building inspection or municipal office to learn the local regulations. You want to ensure that any renovations you make are done in keeping with safety codes and laws. 3. While you’re thinking of your neighbors, give them the heads up on your potential plans. This way they will not be surprised by the extra noise and activity when the renovation begins. 4. Remodeling can cost anywhere from $200 to $600 per square foot added. You’ll need to figure out a way to pay for the renovations, and you may consider refinancing your home. Make sure it is a smart time financially to do so based on current real estate market conditions. Also know that additions will likely increase your home insurance coverage needs. Consult with the insurance company about estimated charges and any restrictions they have. 5. Consider a standalone structure when mulling over your options. Sometimes the cost of putting up a free-standing office or another structure on your property may end up being less expansive than expanding on what you already have. Think creatively and research all of your options before committing to a project. HOUSE FOR SALE IN THE CITY I have a 2 bedroom / 1 bath house in the city. Slap In The Face For those who came by their service medals honestly, a recent federal appeals court ruling was a slap in the face. The court said you can wear medals you didn’t earn. It’s protected speech under the First Amendment. To keep from giving him even more press, I’ll call the central figure in the case ES, a three-year veteran who enlisted after the Korean War. Forty years later he filed for PTSD benefits, saying he suffered because of the secret Korean combat missions he went on. He claimed he had been injured and when visited in the hospital by a captain, had been given a pile of medals, among them a Purple Heart, Silver Star and Navy Commendation with V. The Department of Veterans Affairs denied the claim (a written narrative). ES then resubmitted and used a copy of a DD-214 that showed he had earned a bunch of medals and had

been shot. Based on that, the VA gave him $2,366 in monthly benefits. In 2006, it was discovered that the copied DD-214 was a fake. ES is all over the court system. A review of documents has him testifying at the trial of a man who offered him $10,000 to kill a judge. After all, ES was a trained killer, given all his medals. ES was investigated for wearing a Purple Heart at the trial and was convicted of violating the Stolen Valor Act (in force at the time), faking his injuries to get benefits, forging his DD-214 and more. He got 12 months. He later appealed, bringing us to today, where it’s OK to wear medals you didn’t earn because it’s protected speech. A fast Wiki-type search reveals that only one of the 11 judges in the appeals court ever served in the military.
