Special to the Piedmont Shopper Four tires beat two anytime, except Sunday when Jimmie Johnson held off teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway. With 25 laps remaining in the race, Earnhardt lined up fourth in the preferred outside groove and had fresher tires than any of the three drivers ahead of him. “I felt like we had enough car and tires to beat him,” Earnhardt said in a NASCAR news release. “Jimmie started to struggle a little bit the last couple laps. My car actually got better the longer we ran and the car did what I needed it to do in the corner, but that still wasn’t good enough.” Two bad pit stops also hindered Earnhardt’s attempt to break a 48-race winless streak. “If you really look at those two pit stops it did cost us a little bit, at least the mistake I made missing pit road completely,” said Earnhardt, whose runner-up finish was his best since a second at Fontana Speedway in California in March. “We had the lead, gave up the lead to Jimmy and he was able to take advantage of the clean air. “If I had not given up track position, and had been smart enough to keep the lead when it counted….we might have won the race.” Smart enough to close out races is the key to winning, and despite having led 80 laps of the race, Earnhardt nevertheless can’t seem to shake bad luck and driver miscues that keep him from winning races and having a shot at a national championship. Despite his strong showing Sunday, Earnhardt is all but eliminated from the Chase – 10th in the standings and 57 points behind leader Matt Kenseth with seven races to go. “We really came close today (Sunday),” said Earnhardt. “I don’t feel like today was a highlight for us. I know competition is tough and difficult -- Jimmie being one of the best drivers the sport has ever seen. I knew beating him at one of his better racetracks was going to be a challenge, but I really thought we had the car to do that today.” Johnson and Earnhardt led 323 of the 400-lap race.

Friday Morning many folks got up early for breakfast at Mary's Diner. They came out to support Danny Marshall and to hear 2 of Pittsylvania County's own who have made good of themselves . Todd Haymore the Son of H. F. and Faye Haymore. Todd is the Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry for Governor McDonnell. Martin Kent who is also from Pittsylvania county was also at the breakfast. Martin serves as the Governor’s deputy personnel and budget officer for the Commonwealth, oversees the daily work of his cabinet secretaries and is a primary liaison to the Virginia General Assembly. We were glad to see both Todd and Martin here. Todd does a lot of traveling out of the country for the Governor. Candidates’ breakfast set for October 22 Chamber to Host Forum for House of Delegates’ Candidates The Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce will hold a forum on October 22nd to allow business and community leaders to learn more about the candidates for the 14th and 16th Districts of the Virginia House of Delegates. A candidates’ breakfast will be held on Tuesday, October 22, at 7:30 a.m. at The Institute for Advanced Learning & Research (150 Slayton Avenue, Danville) and will feature the candidates for the 14th and 16th District House seats. For the House of Delegates’ elections in the 14th District, Danny Marshall, Mary Martin, and Gary Miller have confirmed their participation. The homes director Steve Anderson met with the officers and told them how grateful he was. About 20 folks were fed Saturday morning thanks to Sheriff Monduls Donation.

Music could be heard as you got out of your car. Crafters of all kind were on the lawn. Stew along with Sorghum molasses was also available. One thing that caught our attention was the Climax fire Dept. The old station is on one side of the old school and the new station is on the other side. Another things we noticed is many folks along the road were having yard sales. We guessed they thought people leaving the festival may stop by to see what they may have. Deputy Shirleen Fountain (R) was commended for saving the life of a co-worker on August 21st of this year by performing the Heimlich maneuver. Deputy Fountain has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 15 years.

Unfortunately there are children and teens that are standing at the school bus stop without a coat to keep them warm. URW is once again collecting clean, gently used coats to be donated to those in need throughout our community this fall and winter season. Please take a minute to go through your closet and bring the coats you and your children no longer wear to one of our URW Branch locations conveniently located at Lowes Drive, Arnett Blvd., Danville Regional Hospital and Tightsqueeze VA. We encourage all who can help to join us in making sure no child is left out in the cold this fall and winter season. Together we can make a difference! She was born June 28, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, VA to the late Sandy Adkins and the late Myrtle BennettAdkins. She was the wife of the late Alvin William “Cotton” Jones of Danville. Mrs. Jones loved her family, and enjoyed cooking and flowers. She worked at Dan River Inc. for 42 years. She is survived by three daughters: Edna J. Thompson and husband Sam, Joyce J. Duggins and husband Bobby, and Brenda J. Newman and husband Bill, all of Danville; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Viola Thomas Crowder Bryant, age 86, of 2526 North Main St., Danville, VA, died on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born on January 02, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, VA, to the late George Thomas Crowder and Elizabeth Cybil McDaniel Crowder. Mrs. Bryant was a homemaker and a member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church. She was a housewife and mother of six and one step-daughter. Gerald “Wayne” Green, Sr.

Gerald “Wayne” Green, Sr. of 1157 Hutson Road, Dry Fork, Virginia, passed away Thursday, September 26, 2013 at his home after a two year decline in health. He was born June 18, 1950 in Danville, VA to the late Clyde Alfred Green and Marion Weatherford Green. Wayne worked over 44 years at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company as one of the longest current tenured Goodyear Danville employees. He also had brief assignments at Goodyear facilities in Valleyfield, Quebec and in Ashboro, NC. He had been a member of the Elks, Chaired the Pittsylvania County Gifted Support Group for Pittsylvania County Schools, worked with the Pittsylvania County Youth Sports League as a Basketball and Softball Coach. Wayne was a graduate of Tunstall High School and Danville Community College—Certified Quality Engineer from American Society Quality Control. He also had a Certificate in Quality Management and Graduate of Goodyear Management Institute @ University of Tennessee Martin. Wayne was a Sergeant in the Army National Guard. He is survived by his wife Linda Hutson Green, of the residence; son: “Gerald” Wayne Green, Jr., of Danville, VA; daughters: Carol Green Henley and her husband Scott, of Danville, VA and Brandi Green Tweedy and her husband Michael, of Appomattox, VA; grandchildren: Ashley Renee’ and Zachary Wayne Green; Luke and Nathan Henley; Jadon, Haleigh, Mikayla, and Colton Wayne Tweedy. Irvin Dorsey McDaniel

Irvin Dorsey McDaniel, 81, of 721 Afton Road died Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a decline in health for the past six months. Born in Danville, VA on June 2, 1932, the son of the late Nettie Powell McDaniel. Mr. McDaniel spent his life in the Danville area where he worked for Tuckers Body Shop. He enjoyed working on cars, reading and watching the news, he also liked auto racing, and having pets until his health deteriorated. He was married to the late Jewell Sizer McDaniel. Survivors include a son, Tony McDaniel, of Danville, VA; three grandchildren, Brandi McDaniel, Zachary McDaniel, Dakota McDaniel; daughter-in-law, Jennifer McDaniel, nephew, Bobby Neal; a sister-in-law, Joyce Miller and a friend, Kristi Brizendine. Prophet Isaiah Saunders, Jr., 61, of 1005 West Stokes Street, Danville, VA died Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born May 3, 1952, in Pittsylvania County, VA, he was the son of the late Prophet Isaiah Saunders, Sr. and the late Estelle Lewis Saunders. He was married to Gloria Echols Saunders, who survives. In addition to his wife, survivors one son, Jarrod I. Saunders of Norfolk, VA; one brother, Frankey Saunders of Danville, VA; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was born April 29, 1935 in Danville to the late Mildred Dillon Hanks and the late Joseph A. Hanks, Sr. He is survived by his wife Daphine Hall Hanks. Mr. Hanks proudly served his country in the US Air Force, and later worked as a building contractor. He was a member of Shermont Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hanks is survived by his three stepdaughters: Sheila Harrington of Morven, NC, Sandra Carpenter of Wadesboro, NC, and Susan Walton of Seagrove, NC; his stepson Billy Still of Danville; his sister Juanita Hullender of Danville; eight grandchildren and eleven greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Fleetwood was born in Caswell County on June 2, 1932 a daughter of the late Kemper Harvey McCann and Janie Blankenship McCann. She had lived in Alexandra, VA for a period of time before moving back to the Semora Community of Caswell County to live. Mrs. Fleetwood was of the Baptist Faith. She was the widow of the late Robert M. “Bob” Fleetwood who died on January 10, 1991. Mrs. Fleetwood is survived by one sister Blanch M. Solomon of Milton, NC, five nieces, two nephews and a number of great nieces & great nephews and several special friends. She is survived by numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, as well as her sisters-in law, Margaret Dumont and Lucille Hogg, and nieces and nephews. Most of her life was lived in the Danville area where she had worked as a beautician. She was a member of Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church. Mildred Gatewood Ferrell

Mildred Gatewood Ferrell passed away Sunday, September, 29, 2013, at the age of ninetynine. She was born on July 1, 1914 in Pelham, NC, the daughter of Louis Stokes Gatewood and Mary Sue Coleman Gatewood. Mrs. Ferrell had been a resident of Stratford House and later Stratford Reha-

bilitation Center since November of 1998. The family appreciates the care and concern expressed by the caregivers of both facilities. Prior to 1998, she lived on Clarendon Circle where she enjoyed her neighborhood friends. Mrs. Ferrell was married to William Herbert Ferrell on April 3, 1943. The couple lived in Texas during World War II, before returning to Danville in 1945. Mr. Ferrell passed away in 1991. Survivors include a niece, Lillian Sue Gatewood Shelton and husband Darrel, three great-nephews, James Ashworth of Danville, Daniel Shelton and his wife Lauren of Quito, Ecuador, their daughters, Nora and Lillian Shelton, and Ben Shelton and his wife Chelsea of Madison, NC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Lewis James Gatewood. Mrs. Ferrell was educated in the Danville Public Schools, was associated with L. Herman Department Store for sixteen years, and was later employed with the Virginia Tobacco Company. She was a life-long member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Other affiliations were the Joseph Gravely Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Beverstone Garden Club, and the Wednesday Club. Funeral Services were held at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Barry Foster officiating. James “Weldon” Solomon

James “Weldon” Solomon passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia Born in Turbeville, Va. on August 27, 1925, he was the son of the late James “Otey” and Elsie Burton Solomon. He grew up on the family tobacco farm in Turbeville and lived most of his adult life in Danville, VA. He returned to the family farm in his retirement years. Weldon owned and operated three service stations in the Danville area for over forty years: Downtown Esso, Stonewall Esso, and Dan River Exxon. Weldon was a veteran of WWII, Private First Class in the 75th Infantry Division and saw action in France, Germany and Belgium. He fought courageously in the Battle of the Bulge. Weldon received

several commendations including recognition as an Infantry Sharpshooter. Weldon was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Danville and Olive Branch United Methodist Church in Alton, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Nora Moore Solomon; a son James Michael Solomon and his wife Linda of Greensboro, NC; a daughter Terri Pettyjohn and her husband John of Lynchburg, VA; and grandchildren Andy, Jeffrey, and Bryan Solomon, and Anna and Kemp Pettyjohn. Also surviving are his sister Mary Betty Bass, a special cousin, Nelia Moore, his aunt Edith Burton, and several other cousins, nieces, and nephews. He dearly loved his family and friends. His favorite times were those spent on the porch on his family farm with these loved ones, and those spent on his tractor. The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Lockridge, Jr. and his staff at Lynchburg Nephrology and the Lynchburg UVA Dialysis Center for their special care during the last years of his life. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held Thursday, October 3 at 1:00 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church in Danville, VA with the Reverend Charles Wickham officiating. Visitation will be held after the service in the church social hall. Interment will be held at 4PM at Olive Branch United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alton, VA with the Reverend Robert Woodfin officiating. Afterwards, all friends are welcome to join the family on the porch at the farm in Daddy’s memory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Olive Branch United Methodist Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, or a charity of your choice.

Frances Wilson Taylor, 97, of Danville, VA died Monday, September 30, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born in Danville, VA on August 4, 1916, a daughter of the late Bart Wilson and Lillian Petty Wilson. Mrs. Taylor was married to the late Ivey A. Taylor, Sr. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Gibbs, and husband, Thomas, of Ringgold, VA; a number of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by four daughters, Patricia Willford, Joan Hall, Hazel Gibbs, and Betty Tipton;

two sons, Ivey A. Taylor, Jr., Harold E. Taylor. Graveside services were held on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Floral Hills Memory Gardens conducted by the Rev. Chad Branch. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is serving the Taylor Family.

John Wallace Lunsford

John Wallace Lunsford, 91, of 1836 Lawless Creek Road, Blairs, VA passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born April 5, 1922 in Ringgold, VA to the late Mary Clements Lunsford and the late John Bernice Lunsford. He is survived by his wife, Irmgard Lunsford, of the residence. Mr. Lunsford proudly served his country in the US Army, receiving The Combat Infantry Badge for his service in Germany during WWII. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Agriculture, and served as County Supervisor for Farmer’s Home Administration for 30 years. Mr. Lunsford was a lifelong member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Choir Member. In addition to his wife, Mr. Lunsford is survived by his daughter, Dianne Hairston and husband, The Honorable Phillip L. Hairston of Richmond, VA; his sons: Berndie Lunsford and wife, Pat of Blairs, VA, and Rick Lunsford of Richmond, VA; his sister, Marjorie L. Franklin of Danville; his grandchildren: Bryce Lunsford, and Melanie Hamel and husband, Captain Patrick Hamel; and his greatgranddaughter, Margot Hamel, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lunsford was predeceased by his grandson, Michael Brandon Albright.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Norris Funeral Services, Mt. Hermon Chapel with Fred Clifton officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Highland Burial Park, Danville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Mrs. Mildred Giles Moore, age 84, of 226 North Oakland Ave., Eden NC, died on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 in at the Brian Center in Eden, NC. Mrs. Moore was born on April 2, 1929 to the late Montague Giles and Mabel Emily Norton Giles. She was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. Mrs. Moore is survived by her daughter, Margaret McKinney of Pelham; three grandchildren, Sheila Hancock and husband Timothy of Providence, Wesley McKinney and wife Lisa of Pelham, and Amy McGuire of Stoneville, NC; seven great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth G. Caudle and husband Ray of Danville and Helen G. Hunt of High Point, NC; and one brother, Russell Neal Giles and wife Florence of Danville. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Franklin Moore, her brother, Alvin R. Giles, and one great-grandchild. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Friday October 4, 2013 at Swicegood Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Eggers officiating. Interment will follow the service at Danville Memorial Gardens. Carrie Kreger, 70, of 845 Mt. Cross Road, Danville, VA, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born on January 31, 1943, in Pittsville, VA, a daughter of the late Claude and Flonnie Pillow. Carrie grew up in the Spring Garden community. She worked as the bookkeeper for ARC Electric Co., Inc. Carrie was known to many of the ball players at Chatham High School as “Granny” as she never missed a baseball, basketball, or football game that her grandson played in. She loved good country music, dancing, NASCAR, and taking care of her home and yard. Carrie was George Jones’ #1 fan. Carrie was always helping others in need until she, herself, needed to be helped. She was the wife of Ralph E. Kreger, Jr. for more than 30 years. Gene was a selfless and dedicated husband having spoiled her until the very end. Even after she had to move to Roman Eagle Memorial Home in June, 2012, he never failed to be there at least twice a day, every day. In addition to her parents, Carrie was predeceased by 3 brothers: Wilford Pillow (Docia), Conley Ray Pillow (Peggy-Deceased), and Algie Pillow (Patsy) . Left to cherish her memories, in addition to her husband, Gene, are her children, Sylvia Rigney (Dean), Rickie Allen (Karen), and Kim Moser (Walt). Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. They are Daniel Rogers (Katie), Dustin Rogers, Kassidi Allen, Austin Allen, Ethan Moser, Michelle Powell (Brandon) Chris Rigney and Amy Durham. Baked Teriyaki Chicken “A spicy, homemade teriyaki of soy sauce, cider vinegar, ginger and garlic enlivens your choice of chicken cuts. Doubles easily to satisfy the hoards.” INGREDIENTS: 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 tablespoon cold water 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup cider vinegar 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 12 skinless chicken thighs DIRECTIONS: 1. In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the cornstarch, cold water, sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, ginger and ground black pepper. Let simmer, stirring frequently, until sauce thickens and bubbles. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 de2. grees C). 3. Place chicken pieces in a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Brush chicken with the sauce. Turn pieces over, and brush again. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Turn pieces over, and bake for another 30 minutes, until no longer pink and juices run clear. Brush with sauce every 10 minutes during cooking.

“Cinnamon-spiced apples are baked with a sweet oat crumble in this simple dessert. It’s great served with ice cream!” INGREDIENTS: 10 cups all-purpose apples, peeled, cored and sliced 1 cup white sugar 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 cup water 1 cup quick-cooking oats 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup packed brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup butter, melted DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degree C). 2. Place the sliced apples in a 9x13 inch pan. Mix the white sugar, 1 tablespoon flour and ground cinnamon together, and sprinkle over apples. Pour water evenly over all. 3. Combine the oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and melted butter together. Crumble evenly over the apple mixture. 4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for about 45 minutes.

Did you know that creditors also have the ability to place special comments on your credit report? These comments appear for potential creditors to see. In some cases a potential employer or landlord could see these comments as well. Here are a few things that may show up if they apply to you. • Repossession – If the lender has repossessed collateral because of loan default • Voluntary surrender – If borrower has voluntarily given back collateral to the lender • Foreclosure – Real estate foreclosed on by lender because of loan default • Deed in lieu of foreclosure – Borrower surrenders deed to lender on defaulted mortgage to avoid a foreclosure • Paid by co-maker – If the co-maker has made payments to save their credit because borrower has defaulted on loan • First payment never received – If the loan goes into default on the first payment • Account paid for less than full balance – If the lender agrees to a settlement • Credit grantor cannot locate consumer Keep in mind that these are just a few of the comments a creditor can report to the credit bureau.
