The Traditions Of Halloween October 31st is nearly here, and soon the streets will be filled with costumed revelers eager to get their share of the free-flowing candy and other prizes. Year after year, trickor-treaters don their costumes and parade from home to home. But have you ever wondered where this and other traditions began? Trick-or-treating and wearing costumes seem like odd traditions to those unaccustomed to Halloween. Halloween customs are actually a blend of Celtic, Catholic, Pagan, and ancient Roman traditions. It is thought that Halloween celebrations date back to roughly 800 to 600 BC, when they originally were observances of the harvest season and nature before the arrival of winter, which marked the barren state of the landscape. The Celtic festival of Samhain was a major influence on modern day Halloween. On October 31, Celts also believed the door to the underworld was opened and could let in deceased spirits. Feasts were held and place-settings were left for deceased relatives, as they were believed to return home for a visit. In addition to friendly spirits, mean spirts also could cross over. Bonfires were lit to ward off spirits, and extra candles would be used in homes and churches to keep evil away. Even the custom of wearing costumes has its roots in keeping evil spirits at bay. Costumes and masks were worn to confuse bad spirits and frighten them so that they could not bestow misfortune on the more fortunate. People also wore masks and ventured out after dark so that envious ghosts who were cold and outside could not recognize residents of warm and inviting homes. The trick-or-treating custom may have blended origins. Druids believed the dead would play tricks on mankind during Samhain, causing destruction and panic. To appease the spirits, people would give the dead food and other treats. Another custom, called “souling,” can be linked to Halloween as well. Early Christians would walk from village to village asking for “soul cakes,” which were square pieces of bread with currants. The more cakes received, the more prayers the faithful would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the cake donors to expedite a soul’s passage to heaven. Irish trick-or-treating customs may be traced back to collecting supplies doorto-door for the festival of St. Columbkille. Halloween revelry is full of traditions passed on through the ages.

He asked for help and she could see why. Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots still didn’t want to go on. Finally, when the second boot was on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little boy said, “Teacher, they’re on the wrong feet.”

She looked and sure enough, they were. It wasn’t any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on this time on the right feet. He then announced, “These aren’t my boots.” She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, “Why didn’t you say so?” like she wanted to. And, once again she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet. No sooner they got the boots off and he said, “They’re my brother’s boots. My Mom made me wear ‘em.” Now she didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. But, she mustered up the grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots on his feet again. Helping him into his coat, she asked, “Now, where are your mittens?” He said, “I stuffed ‘em in the toes of my boots.”

Special to the Piedmont Shopper There wouldn’t be a NASCAR without controversy. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Busch didn’t leave any doubt about the oil issue in Sunday’s raindelayed Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Both drivers were livid about an oily surface that NASCAR failed to clean up, resulting in poor finishes for each driver. “You now can’t pass anybody; a single-lane race track. Then they (NASCAR) puts oil on the top lane and that puts you into the fence, so thanks to NASCAR for not cleaning up the track,” said Busch following a dismal 20th-place. Earnhardt’s day was finished after 183 laps, he, too, a victim of oil that remained on the surface. “We hit the wall,” Earnhardt said after finishing 28th. “I hit the wall, Brad Keselowski hit the wall, Sam Hornish Jr. hit the wall and a bunch of other guys reported fluid on the track. I’ve raced this stuff for 20 years. I know what oil and Speedy Dri is. We hit fluid and flew into the freaking wall hard. “There were some shadows cast by billboards across the track and that may have made it difficult for them (NASCAR) to see,” he added. “The oil slick was about two-and-a-half car lengths wide. You can put Speedy Dri where the car went, but somebody needs to get out there and get their hands on the track.” But NASCAR didn’t shoulder the blame on this one either. “We looked everywhere, including putting people on the ground,” said NASCAR’s series director Richard Buck. “We did our job. We actually had a human being walking in the area of the oil to make sure. I think we have an excellent record for doing just that.” Brotherly love: It’s nothing like it when two drivers express their brotherly love for each other. And such was the case Sunday in the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway when the two Kyle’s (Larsen and Busch) met at the entrance of pit road, spoiling any chance that Busch may have had in advancing into Round Two of the playoffs. The race was 195 laps old and under caution when Larson, who was running second at the time, darted across the track to pit. Busch, who was third, faked as if to pit then decided not to. When Busch attempted to move back onto the racing surface, Larson was there and contact was made, damaging the front ends of both cars. “What the (expletive) was he thinking,” Busch shouted over the team’s radio. “He was never going to make the commitment cone anyway.” Larson was polite in his assessment of the incident. “I hung a left and Kyle was there,” Larson explained. “I feel really terrible to ruin their day and hopefully it didn’t hurt their chances of transferring through this round of the Chase. I know they deserve a top-three finish for sure. I feel awful about it and still do.” That accident, along with a patch of oil later in the race that sent Busch crashing into the wall, was extremely costly for Busch, who is one of twelve drivers remaining in Round Two of the Chase. Green-white-checkered finish: Greenwhite-checkered finishes have been a part of NASCAR since 2004, and should not be a factor in any race, especially at Daytona and Talladega where restrictor-plate racing almost guarantees fans a race finishing under green. Several frightening crashes of late at the two tracks have NASCAR mulling over the idea of limiting the number of three attempts to a single green-white-checkered finish. Better still; do away with it altogether -- or at least institute one single-file restart at the end of the race. (All quotes are from reliable NASCAR sources.)

Brother its been 21 years since you left me. I remember it like it was yesterday. I miss you so much. You have all the Angels with you to celebrate your day; Mama, Dad and Carroll Wayne. For my big brother you showed me a lot of things. I learned a lot I didn’t know but you forgot to teach me one last things and this is how to let you go. I know you didn’t mean to leave me but sometimes we have no choice. I miss being your little sister and hearing my name called by your voice. I wish I had gotten to say ,”I love You” before you were given the sky. If God could grant me one last wish I’d ask to say “Good Bye”. You always meant a lot to me. I could never love you less. I know its true when they say, “He only takes the Best”. Your nephew Corey Cory says says he wish he had known you. He speaks of you often with questions. In my heart you’ll always be here. You’ll continue to guide and help me see. I’ll never forget your soothing voice and smile. I miss you with all my heart. I know you’re always by my side as the rest of the family above. So now I guess this is goodbye till we meet on the other side of the beautiful shore. Sadly Missing You, I Love You Sister Carolyn and Jerry

Forty-five million Americans are currently living in poverty. For these families and individuals, a warm coat is a budget extra they simply cannot afford. URW Community Federal is asking for you to help us make a difference in our neighbor’s lives by donating coats during our upcoming coat drive! We are working to collect clean, gently used warm coats to support our coat drive program, between now and October 15th at all URW Branches. The process is simple: you drop off your extra coat(s) and URW takes care of the rest. All donated coats will be given to a local agency for distribution to local children in need. If you are a teacher and know of a child in your school that does not have a coat, please let us know. Our goal is that no child will be left out in the cold in the URW Community.

Q: Please, please, please tell me it isn’t true that ABC Family has canceled “Chasing Life”! That’s my favorite show on television today, and it always makes me count my blessings. -Layla F. in Georgia A: I’m sorry to have to tell you, but the tear-jerking season-two finale that aired last month was indeed the series finale. ABC Family decided not to renew the one-hour drama, which centered on 24-year-old April, played by Italia Ricci, a journalist trying to work her way up the ladder at a Boston newspaper while balancing her career and family. Just as things start to come together for her, she gets the devastating news that she has leukemia. The series finale saw April take her best friend, Beth, and love interest, Dominic, to Italy, where she reveals to them she is not eligible for the clinical trials for her cancer treatment and has decided not to pursue a bone-marrow transplant. She just wants to live out her days in peace. She tells Beth: “It’s not giving up because I’ve already won. I could die happy here.” *** Q: Is it true that Richie Sambora and Heather Locklear are back together? I saw pictures of them online frolicking on a beach together. -- Nina H., via email A: The former Bon Jovi guitarist and his gorgeous yet down-to-Earth ex-wife have not gotten back together. They are one of those rare Hollywood ex-couples who others could learn a lesson from: They have remained good friends since splitting up eight years ago, and they take the co-parenting of daughter Ava very seriously. Recently photos of Richie, Heather and Ava surfaced of the trio having fun in the sun and sand in Bora Bora, where the friendly exes were treating their daughter to a family vacation before she goes off to college. *** Q: Can you tell me what Aaron Eckhart has been

Italia Ricci Photo Credit: Courtesy of ABC Family up to lately? -- Rita C., via email A: The handsome and versatile actor is currently shooting Clint Eastwood’s latest film, “Sully,” which chronicles the January 2009 real-life events where Capt. Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger safely landed his aircraft on the Hudson River after a flock of geese knocked out both engines. Aaron plays first officer and co-pilot Jeff Skiles opposite Tom Hanks’ Sully. The film is based on Sullenberger’s 2009 autobiography “Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters.” The film just started shooting, and as of this writing, a premiere date had not been set. *** Q: Did they cancel “Person of Interest”? I’m getting nervous because I haven’t been able to find it on CBS’s fall schedule. -- Paul T., via email A: CBS did renew the crime drama for a fifth season -- a 13-episode order of the series will premiere midseason. Although CBS hasn’t yet made its final decision, show runners are approaching this season as if it could be the final one, as executive producer Jonathan Nolan revealed during this summer’s Comic-Con. * When you are able to pick up extra meat at a great price, you want to be sure that while it’s frozen, it maintains its best taste. Use this tip to vacuum seal your meat without any special equipment! Add meat pieces to a plastic, zipper-top bag. Fill a large pot several inches deep with water. Seal all but an inch or so of the bag. As you lower the bag into the water (zipper top up) the air will escape through the unsealed portion. When no air remains, seal the bag and then remove from the water. * “Have you tried this single-serving blender hack using a mason jar? Most standard-size blender blades can be

One of the best remedies is “air time” -- that is, letting baby go without a diaper for a bit. Another simple soother is a baking soda bath. Try adding 2-4 tablespoons of baking soda to Junior’s bathwater. * After you’ve cooked your chicken whole, remove the meat and throw the bones and remaining carcass in the slow cooker with 3-4 cups of water. “The Gift” (R) -- In this psychological thriller, there’s just something so nerve-wracking about somebody trying too hard to be your friend. Simon and Robyn (Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall) are a lovely young couple who recently moved from Chicago to Los Angeles. A chance encounter puts them in touch with Gordo (Joel Edgerton), an acquaintance from Simon’s high school -“Gordo the weirdo” they called him. Soon, Gordo’s being very generous with gifts, even dropping by their house unannounced in the middle of the day. Seems nice ... but something is way off. Written and directed by Edgerton, this thriller hits

Jake Gyllenhaal & Oona Laurence in “Southpaw” Photo Credit: The Weinstein Company the right notes without overplaying any of them. The tension in the marriage, and the tension over what Simon could be hiding, hang with you. You’re reading the screen for clues, for the next cue about where this is going. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Pixels” (PG-13) -- Adam Sandler slouches his way through more haphazard hijinks in this big-budget nostalgic action-comedy. Sandler plays a schlubby guy still trying to get over a video-game tournament he lost in his childhood. He’s also friends with the president, who is played by Kevin James (keep suspending that disbelief, cause the aliens haven’t even landed yet). Shrugging Sandler must team up with others (Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad and Michelle Monaghan) to defeat an invading force of aliens that have taken the form of ‘80s arcade game characters. It’s not just the noise and flashing lights that make arcade games so fun and memorable. A movie so deeply inspired by arcades might have gotten that lesson and written a script to prove it. Grownups may get tickles of nostalgia when a giant Q*bert appears on screen, but that can’t support a running time this long with jokes this thin.
“Southpaw” (R) -- Jake Gyllenhaal plays a boxer who must endure sparring round after round with almost every boxingmovie trope. Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) grew up an orphan, married the perfect woman, had a baby, became a champion and then lost everything. To save his daughter (Oona Laurence) from being a ward of the state, Billy has to get a new manager (Forrest Whitaker) and get back in the ring. Gyllenhaal and Whitaker have a fine dynamic, but nothing elevates the movie above the predictability hanging all over it. “Max” (PG) -- When a U.S. Marine is killed in the line of duty, his canine companion, Max, refuses to take commands from anyone else -- except the Marine’s teenage brother, Justin. Besides having just lost his older brother, Justin has some issues getting along with his father, talking to girls and generally staying out of trouble. Max helps him out with all of these. There’s also some trouble with Mexican drug traffickers, which seems way too far out of Justin and Max’s league. The movie seems distracted and broken up, with over-the-top sentimentality as the thread holding it together. --Q: I have a Shirley Temple string holder. It is painted chalkware and has been in my family since the 1930s. A neighbor has offered me $200 for it, and my big question is whether I should take the money or keep the Temple item. -Kathy, Austin, Texas A: Take the money and run. According to “Kovels’ Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide” by Ralph and Terry Kovel and published by Black Dog and Leventhal press, your string holder is worth about $60. *** Q: I have an issue of The San Antonio Light newspaper announcing the end of World War II. It appears to be complete and is in fairly good condition. What is it worth? -- Steve, Alamo Heights, Texas A: Although your newspaper is historic and interesting, it is not all that valuable. If it is complete and in betterthan-average condition, it probably would sell in the $15-$25 range. For a second opinion, you might contact an established dealer and expert, Timothy Hughes, P.O. Box 3636, Williamsport, PA 17701. Check out his website at www.rarenewspapers.com. Incidentally, The San Antonio Light was a William Randolph Hearst publication, and it no longer exists. *** Q: My late husband bought

me some Holly Hobbie limited edition statues during the 1980s. He also purchased a statue from the Crosa Collection. I am wondering if these have any value. -- Marie, Orange City, Florida A: The best way to determine the values of limited editions such as the items you have is to monitor eBay. That site is in reality an international auction site and should be helpful in establishing current values. Most limited editions are difficult to sell in today’s market. *** Q: I have about a dozen storybooks that I received as a child during the 1950s. I have been tempted to toss them but wonder if they might have value. -- Bethany, Metarie, Louisiana A: There are several reference books that might be helpful. A favorite of mine is “Warman’s Children’s Books: Identification & Price Guide” by Steve Santi and published by Krause Books. Although the edition I have is several years old, I think it still reflects the current market.
