This was a story told to us by our chemistry professor at school. A student wished to make some potassium hydroxide solution (aqueous) and decided to throw a large lump of potassium into a bucket of water. Out of the corner of his eye, the professor observed what the student was about to do and hurried over. After confirming this was what was intended, he asked the student to first stir the water in the bucket for five minutes before adding the potassium. Puzzled, the student followed after him to ask the purpose of this action. "It will give me time to get away!" said the professor.

21 Tips to Academic Glory As promised in last week’s column, this week I am going to give some academic tips. If you are a student, they are for you; if you are the parent of a student, they are for you. If you are kind of old and a parent going back to school, these tips are definitely for you. 1. Come into class smiling and sit in the front. 2. Ask questions; volunteer to answer the teacher’s questions. 3. Engage the teacher in conversation some before and/ or after class. 4. If you know for sure the teacher has made or attempted a joke, open your damn mouth wide and laugh. 5. Never be tardy; that’s extremely rude. 6. Don’t rise up early and strut your ass out the door; keep your twitchy, undisciplined self seated until the class is over. 7. Don’t miss days. Missing class is an insult to your teacher, unfair to yourself, and will make a hard class impossible. 8. Missing class results in your trying to teach yourself— from the text or your friend’s notes. What the teacher emphasizes in class will likely appear on tests and exams. Don’t guess at that; go to class and find out what it is. You will then be spending your time reviewing what you need to know, not teaching yourself what you hope you need to know. 9. Keep you phone off and out of your hand. 10. Hand work in on time. The teacher’s rules and deadlines are not just for other students. They are for you. 11. Pay attention; always know what’s going on; know what’s due when. Erase “But I thought…” from your vocabulary. 12. Read and process the text assignments before class. Come with questions. 13. Take notes. Your memory is about 10 percent as effective as you think it is. 14. Engage with other students; proofread each other’s papers; form study groups; have fun with these studybuddies. 15. If you are struggling in a class, don’t be too lazy or too proud to ask the teacher for help. 16. Take the class seriously and let the instructor know that you do. 17. Do not talk when the teacher is talking. 18. Get in no personality conflicts with the teacher. There will be time for that after you get your A. Then you can tell him how sorry he was. 19. Keep all your materials organized. Do not lose things. 20. Keep your focus entirely and solidly on moving your academic endeavors forward. It’s better to be unhappy with a college degree than it is to be miserable and not have one. 21. Know that a 15-credit semester load is equal to a full-time job. bleigg@aol.com

Neighborhood Block Party Planned on Colquhoun Street Oct 22 Make-it Happen Grant Launches DANVILLE -- Residents of the Colquhoun Street neighborhood are invited to a block party October 22 to learn about a community beautification project in their neighborhood. The event starts at 4:30 p.m. and features free food, information, and the opportunity to sign-up to volunteer at a cleanup day. The event will be held outside in the 600 block of Colquhoun Street. Led by the Dan River Basin Association and partners: Allison Platt & Associates, the City of Danville, the Danville Science Center, Galileo Magnet School and the WW Moore Juvenile Detention Center, the project features a stream clean-up and creation of a natural space along the stream. The project will improve a neglected section of the neighborhood – to create an area that people will use, enjoy and maintain. It enhances redevelopment work in the river district, according to organizers. Danville Regional Foundation has invested $10,000 from its “Make It Happen” grant program to complete the project. A highlight of the “Stream Team” project is student involvement. The project features opportunities for students at both the nearby Galileo and WW Moore schools to work with adult mentors on aspects of the program, organizers said. Educational activities include environmental sampling, landscape planning and planting, photography and writing. Students will also work with a video editor to create a documentary of the project. With this event, organizers will engage the people who live and work in and around Colquhoun Street in a clean-up day and also to get their input on the project. The clean-up event is scheduled November 3 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., with November 4 (1 – 4 p.m.) being the rain date. To volunteer, please call: 540 493 0477.

Hunter placed First in the 61-70lb weight division to win the "2012 NTPA Championship. Both boys earned the invitation to Raleigh's North Carolina State fair by winning first place in their weight classes at the Danville/Pittsylvania Fairground in July. Matthew won the 2011 Youth NTPA Championship last year. Matthew attends Union Hall Elementary and Hunter attends Brosville Elementary. Matthew is the son of Buddy & Kelly McCrickard of Callands VA. Hunter is the son of John & Donna Yeatts of Danville VA.
On Friday, October 5,2012, these sweet potatoes were dug up out of the garden of Tammy Bengtson, of Pelham. The longest potato was 14 inches long and the biggest weighed in at Approx. 4lbs., 10 inches long, 15 inches around. The potato plants when first planted was eaten twice by a groundhog, then just before time to dig up the potatoes the deer ate all the leaves off the vines and we still got all these big potatoes.

Ed Steffey Memorial Education Open Winners Announced An afternoon storm may have provided a temporary delay, but it didn’t put a damper on the fun and low scores at the 21st Annual Ed Steffey Memorial Education Open golf tournament on September 28th at the Goodyear Golf Course. The tournament began when former Goodyear plant manager Ed Steffey, who was a member of the board of directors of the former Danville Area Chamber of Commerce, shared concerns about the lack of funding for innovative classroom projects. Steffey saw many ‘bright spots’ in our schools, but he also recognized that there had to be a different way to provide resources that weren’t available through the traditional funding streams. Steffey realized that Goodyear alone couldn’t change the future of education, but that one business could influence the ability of the region to come together in support of education. Goodyear had two assets that were important in the development of the education grants: a passionate leader and a golf course. Using that combination, a golf tournament was started with all proceeds being designated for the education grants. Other businesses were invited to participate and the education grant program was launched. "This tournament has become a testament to a great vision from a fervent supporter of education,” said Goodyear-Danville Plant Manager Tim Noe. “Ed Steffey saw the classroom funding shortfalls within our education system and realized this community would be willing to step up in a meaningful way.” All of the funds from the tournament are distributed to education projects in the region by the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce. While the final proceeds from this year’s tournament are still being tabulated, the tournament has raised more than $250,000 over the past 21 years. This year’s tournament saw 26 teams vying for top honors in the captain’s choice tournament. Capturing first place honors and winning a set of Goodyear tires for each player was the Ray Ray’s Golf Shop team with a score of 55. Team members included Jesse Hawker, Ray Pruitt, Scott Whitt, and Bobby Cadieux. Finishing in second place, after matching cards due to a tie, was the Bojangles – Mountain Food Services team of Tommy Rogers, Chad Anderson, Raymond Newman, and Kyle Hoehne who shot a 57. Third place finishers were Paul Miller, Nathan Clarkson, Kwang Kim, and Ramsey Yeatts representing the Paul W. Miller DDS team. The team also shot a 57. Prizes were also awarded to randomly selected teams. Finishing in 10th place with a 62 was the Turf Tamers team of Tim Custer, Ray Lawson, Robin Starnes, and Ronnie Dix. The 17th place team, with a score of 65, was Farm Credit of the Virginias. Team members were Landon Stanfield, Rodney Dellis, Brett Thomas, and Joey Cornwell. Capturing 21st place with a score of 67 was the Danville Regional Medical Center team of Jenny Gay, Renuka Prasad, Tom Hairston, and Jamie Reynolds. The winner of the closest-to-the pin contest on hole #2 was Mike Sigmon who missed the hole by a mere 3’. Patrick Wales landed 2’ 2” from hole #6 to win the closest-to-the-pin, and Mark Foster won closest-to-the-pin on #10 with a distance of 6’1”. Mike Sigmon landed 6’7” from the hole on #12 to win closest-to-the-pin. Teddy Darnell missed a hole-in-one by only two inches on #17 to capture closest-to-the-pin on #17. 1 1/2 lb. salmon fillet per person 1 pat of butter on each side 1 hand squeeze of lemon on each side Sprinkle of parsley per side 3 sprinkles of garlic salt to taste per side 3 sprinkles of pepper per side 3 sprinkles of paprika Put salmon fillets on tin foil covered broiler pan. Put butter, lemon, parsley, garlic salt and pepper on top. Sprinkle on paprika. Broil 7 minutes each side. Delicious.
BUTTERHORN CRESCENT ROLLS 1 pkg. active dry yeast 1 tablespoon sugar 1 cup warm milk 3 eggs, beaten 5 cups flour (more or less) 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup shortening
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm (not hot) milk with 1 tablespoon sugar and set aside for 5 minutes. Add beaten eggs to milk and yeast mixture. Whisk together flour, salt, and sugar in a large bowl. Using a pastry blender, work in cold butter or shortening. Add liquid mixture and knead on a lightly floured surface for 2 to 3 minutes until dough comes together (add a small amount of flour if needed to make a soft dough, but the less flour used the better). Refrigerate overnight. The next day, divide dough in half and roll each half into a circle 1/4-inch thick. Spread circle with softened butter. Cut circle into sixteenths. Roll each wedge piece (16 of these) from the outside edge toward the center point. Place on a greased baking sheet and curve outer edges into a crescent shape, if desired. Cover rolls with a damp towel and let rise until doubled in size for several hours (may take as long as 4 hours depending on humidity and your conditions). Bake in a preheated 375°F oven until rolls are light golden (about 15 minutes or until done).

During the 2011 tax season, volunteers throughout the region prepared over 1,860 tax returns for FREE, resulting in over 2 Million Dollars in Federal Refunds and $259,619 in State Refunds. Many of these same individuals qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit, Educational Credits, and the Child Tax Credit.
