October 22nd - 28th, 2015 DCC Machining Students Awarded Scholarships from the Gene Haas Foundation
DANVILLE, VA, October 20, 2015 – The Gene Haas Foundation recently provided $55,000 in scholarships for students enrolled in Danville Community College’s Precision Machining Technology and Integrated Machining Technology programs. The Foundation awarded $20,000 to DCC, $15,000 to Pittsylvania County Public Schools, $10,000 to Danville Public Schools, and $10,000 to the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR), which offers the Integrated Machining Technology program in cooperation with DCC. DCC and IALR recipients are: -- Jason Boyd, Johnathon Ferguson, Rachel Wood, Zachary Gammon, and Benjamin Bolen, Eric Collie, Jeffrey Edwards, Tyler Gauldin, Dylan Hardy, James Hubbard, Joshua Luffman, Clayton Schultz, and Jeremy Shallenberger (all enrolled in Integrated Machining). The recipient from Danville Public Schools is Jalen Glass (Precision Machining). Recipients from Pittsylvania County Public Schools, at the Pittsylvania Career & Technical Center (PCTC) are: Matt Gery, Taylor Gibson, Jason Lumpkin, Nicholas Bailey, Joshua Yeatts, Danny Phelps, Charles Carter, Chandler Cox, Justin Crider, Dylan Gauldin, Keith Hogan, William Osborne, and Lawrence Woodson. “The generous contribution that the Gene Haas Foundation has made is providing an opportunity for students in our region to receive training on some of the most advanced Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools available,” says Troy Simpson, Director of Advanced Manufacturing. “The impact of these scholarships is apparent by the record number of students who are enrolled in these programs this year. More than 140 students are currently enrolled in CNC machining and metrology programs at DCC, the IALR, and the PCTC.” DCC officials say the college is committed to providing the highest level of advanced manufacturing training to students in the region at the most affordable cost to their families. “Thanks to partnerships with the Gene Haas Foundation, the IALR, Haas Automation, Inc., business and industry leaders, and local school systems, we have created a training model that prepares students, starting in high school, for lucrative careers in advanced manufacturing,” DCC President Dr. Bruce Scism says. “Graduates of our Precision Machining training who choose to pursue a third year of training in Integrated Machining will gain expertise in lean manufacturing practices, programming advanced CNC equipment, and leadership skills that meet employers’ needs.” The goal of the Gene Haas Center for Integrated Machining at the IALR is to provide highly specialized, technical training in advanced manufacturing in a full-scale, CNC manufacturing flow cell, which allows students to gain the skills identified by our industry partnership for future leadership positions. “There is a tremendous demand for graduates with CNC machining skills in our region and throughout the United States,” Simpson adds. “Students who properly plan and participate in the dual enrollment Precision Machining program are on the fast track to success.” For more information about DCC’s advanced manufacturing programs, contact Troy Simpson at 434.797.8558, or email info@dcc.vccs.edu.

Woman hopes to become a bear... IN HER NEXT LIFE In my next life.... I want to be a bear. If you’re a bear, you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that. Before you hibernate, you’re supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that, too. If you’re a bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you’re sleeping and wake to partially grown, cute cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that. If you’re a mama bear, everyone knows you mean business. You swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them too. I could deal with that. Chatham C TEAM Cheerleaders; Destinee Adams, Bree Foisy, Anna Hall, Emma Hodnett, Teadora Kazmier, Tamia McLaughlin, Lily Owen, Anna Pruit, Lillian Reynolds, Brooklyn Rigney, Morgan Shotwell, Kailynn Stone, Hannah Talbard, Kaylen Wilson, Sophie Doss, Jasmine Smoot, Violet Mills, and Kailey Mitchen showed their Team Spirit at the 2015 Pittsylvania County Parks & Rec Football Cheerleading Competition on Sunday, October 11th. They brought home the win for Best Dance! Way to go, girls! Go Cavs!!
If you’re a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. He EXPECTS that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat. Yup ..... Gonna be a bear.

It’s Tuesday, and everything I think I know to be right in the world is wrong. The Broncos are 5-0 but all Denver fans think Peyton Manning is a bad quarterback. “His numbers are slipping,” they cry, but for the past three seasons he has been 19-1 through five starts. In South Carolina, Manning’s old nemesis, the ball coach named Steve Spurrier, has resigned. Faced with his first losing season since he coached the professional football team from Washington, Spurrier just decides to bail. It’s not something that should have taken anyone by surprise. Spurrier has been slipping of late. What kind of coach tells people during the offseason that he plans on coaching another “two to three years”? The kind of coach who isn’t interested in his recruits, that’s who. Who would want to play for Spurrier when by their senior or junior year he’s off to go fishing? The ones who got suckered into seeing him leave them as a freshman, that’s who. Playboy will stop featuring pictures of fully nude women. A woman gets sassy with Donald Trump, complaining that she expects to be paid a fair wage for doing the same work a man gets paid for. Turns out she’s an UNPAID intern for Jeb Bush. Jennifer Lawrence announced that she doesn’t want to be likable, while Rhianna sits for an interview with some lady getting drunk during lunch. She says she fell
in love with her and then writes about how she Googles female anatomy post-childbirth, and I wonder why I read any of the story. A woman named Jennifer Connell is the worst woman in the world today, suing her 12-year-old nephew for an “exuberant hug” that broke her wrist one afternoon in Westport, Connecticut. The Jets have the secondbest defense in the NFL. Saying the word “best” and Jets in the same sentence is hard to fathom, but the numbers don’t lie. Tom Brady’s “guru” doctor is found to not be a doctor at all. How does that happen? That’s almost as bad as Hillary with the e-mails. In the same way you would think that the president’s staffers would have noticed that they all had .gov email accounts, you would think the Patriots would be on the lookout for an M.D. credential at the end of the doctor’s name. It would just seem to make better sense. What’s next? Manny Pacquiao wanting a rematch with Floyd Mayweather? Yes, turns out he did say that yesterday. Because that’s something we all want to see. Mayweather just made $300 million for a fight that nobody wanted to watch in September. A rematch of a dud fight. That’s what we have to look forward to? Next you’ll tell me that the Cubs will beat the Cardinals to advance to the NL Championship Series. On second thought, don’t. I’ve heard enough for one day. Last man standing BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper Matt Kenseth was the last man left standing for Joey Logano so it seemed quite approximate for him to leave Kenseth bellowing in a cloud of smoke Sunday at Kansas Speedway. After a series of career run-ins that led to confrontations with Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin and Ryan Newman among others, Logano can now add the Kenseth name to his “hit list.” The 400-mile race was about five laps from the finish when Logano, who was constantly being blocked by Kenseth, put a bumper to the former series champion and sent him spinning in Turn One en route to win number two in the Chase. “I raced hard because my team works hard and they expect that out of me,” said Logano, safely nestled into the Third Round of the Chase. “They expect their driver to go to battle in those situations. That’s my job. And if I lifted in that situation like I did down the backstretch, if I did that twice, I’m not sure my team would be too proud to work for someone like that. I know I wouldn’t want to work on someone’s car that’s going to roll over.” Hard racing isn’t always friendly, and if you are racing to make friends then open a Facebook account. Everyone has their own point of view and will choose sides, leaving NASCAR smiling all the way to the bank. It’s what the sport was built on and thrives to rekindle, but Kenseth wasn’t in any mood for a history lesson. “He (Logano) just lifted the rear tires off the ground and wrecked me.” Kenseth explained. “He cries on the radio a lot I guess about blocking or moving around, but man, you’re leading the race and you can pick whatever lane you want. It’s not like he was alongside of me. To wreck somebody for being in a lane that you wanted to be in seems kind of risky and not very smart. “The race track is 80 or 100 feet wide and I was in front of him,” he added. “He spins me out because he wanted to be in the top groove instead of going left and trying to race me for the win the way a man should do it really.” The Chase format was designed to embrace oldtime racing, where moving a rival out of the way was a standard pattern of behavior. If Sunday’s action was a product of the format and its elimination process then NASCAR and Logano came out on top. Hopefully, Kenseth will advance….and if he does will Logano feel the same way when the shoe is on the other foot. I’m not siding with either, but its unlikely Logano will when a championship with Kenseth still in the picture. “Dirty air” a thing of the past: “Dirty air” will be a thing of the past if NASCAR’s new rule package for 2016 lives up to its billing. While it took more race duds than expected, NASCAR announced last week a low-downforce package in all but four races in 2016. Restrictorplate races at Daytona and Talladega are the only exceptions. When cars are difficult to drive and drivers are faced with a sliding, near out-of-control vehicle, cream rises to the top, and that’s what is expected out of the new downforce package that was first used this year at Kentucky Speedway and later on at Darlington Raceway. To call the announcement a blessing, the reality is nothing but short of that. The sport was in a downhill spiral and needed a fix. Those boring Sunday races where “clean air” reined superior are being replaced by a package that allows a driver’s talent to rise to another level. Rarely do drivers agree on anything, but they are “gung ho” on this one. The package, however, is only a base, and if it’s not too tampered with it should be a hit. Sam Lee Carter
Sam Lee Carter, 87, of 3345 M t . Cross R d . , passed away on M o n d a y , October 12, 2015 at Danville Regional Medical Center following a brief period of rapidly declining health after suffering a stroke. Born on November 27, 1927 to Rorer L. and Lula Matthews Carter, Sam grew up on a farm in Pittsylvania County, and spent his life in Danville, with the exception of a stint in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Willa Yeaman Carter, his daughters Lee Ann C. Dillion, Lynn and husband Forrest Burton, Mary Katherine and husband Willard Turpin, and Kim C. Nickens, all of Danville. Sam is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren: Laurie Ann and Joey Scearce, and Austin and Evan; Jonathan and Stacy Dillion, Carter Lee and Emery; Matthew and Lauren Turpin, and Caiti and Hallie; Emily Burton; Jake and Lisa Turpin, and Elliott and Selah; Bethany Dillion; Sam Burton; and Chaz Nickens, as well as several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister, Wallis C. Martin, and his son, Tim Carter. Sam’s life was marked by love for his family, hard work, and helping others. He met Willa Yeaman at Whitmell Farm-Life School, of which he was a graduate, in 7th grade. The childhood sweethearts remained friends through graduation until she moved with family to Norfolk, VA. The two reconnected in Norfolk, where he was stationed, and after his time serving on the U.S.S. Gearing, the couple returned to Danville, and married in 1948. Together, they raised five children, later moving in with his father to care for him. In addition to farm work for much of his life, Sam retired from the Danville City Sheriff’s Department. Sam put all of his children through college, and was there to help in any way when needed. Outside of work, he spent hours in his garden and yard, and listening to music. Over the years, Sam and Willa hosted many gatherings at their home for family and friends, and took family vacations each year, most often to Emerald Isle, NC. * If you’re planning to get into the business of dealing in building materials in Tennessee, you might want to note that in that state it is illegal to sell a hollow log.
* It was noted 20th-century American poet Hart Crane who made the following sage observation: “One must be drenched in words, literally soaked in them, to have the right ones form themselves into the proper patterns at the right moment.” * You might be surprised to learn that people have been using carbon paper to make copies since way back in 1806. * You probably know Edgar Rice Burroughs as the American author of the Tarzan novels, among many other adventure and science-fiction works. You may find it hard to picture him as a journalist flying on bombing runs in the Pacific theater -especially at the age of 66. Burroughs was the oldest war correspondent of World War II.

* Collective nouns are fascinating. For instance, if you see a group of bullfinches, you can call it a bellowing; a group of flies is a business, a cloud or a swarm. You have a pitying of turtledoves and a hover of trout. A group of tigers can be an ambush or a streak; while a group of snails can be called a rout, a walk or an escargatoire. * Those who study such things say that, on a per-capita basis, Canadians eat more doughnuts and more Kraft Mac and Cheese than citizens of any other country. * Before he became famous as an author of horror, suspense and scifi, Stephen King worked as a high-school janitor. *** Thought for the Day: “Be not too hasty to trust or admire the teachers of morality; they discourse like angels but they live like men.” -- Samuel Johnson (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

CHESTNUT LEVEL BAPTIST CHURCH 6940 Spring Garden Road, Blairs, VA will be having their
Annual Homecoming Service & Special Piano Concert on Sunday, Oct. 25th. Rev. Julian Griffin, Pastor Emeritus, will host the Homecoming service. Betty Morin-Griffin will present a special piano concert, starting at 10:00a.m. Following at 11:00a.m., Rev. Griffin will be our guest speaker. Betty Morin-Griffin is a 1937 native of Burlington, North Carolina. As a child of 3-4 years of age, she began “banging” on the living room piano keys that she could reach while standing on tiptoes. Her dear father, Donnie Medford, recognized a talent that needed to be nurtured. So, from his $13.00/week salary, he provided $.50 a week for piano lessons when she was 5 years old. She took private piano/organ lessons for the next 25 years, and was privileged to study piano, organ and voice for one year at Campbell College. Betty has been a staff musician at First Baptist Church, Charlotte; Bellevue Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee; and recently retired after a 25 year career as church pianist for First Baptist in Burlington where she now resides in the Twin Lakes Retirement Community. The most important event in Betty’s life was in October, 1949, when she received Jesus as her personal Savior. The next most important event was when she surrendered everything - her life, her family, and her piano gift to the Lord about 40 years ago. She seeks to play for an audience of One - Jesus, who is everything - eavesdroppers are welcomed but not necessary. Betty has two children, Don and Scotia, their spouses (Jean and TE), four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Rev. Griffin, Pastor Emeritus, was called to Chestnut Level in 1960. He served as pastor for twenty-five years. He resigned in 1985, and returned to Burlington, but has always remained an active part of the Chestnut Level Church family. He has serviced as interim pastor several times since. Julian has always had a special love for music and singing. On special occasions, he leads our singing, which we love for him to do. He is a faithful supporter of our Homecoming concerts. This year we are blessed to have his wife share her piano concert with us. We invite all to join us on this special occasion. Please note the special times, with the concert starting at 10am and the service at 11am. Lunch will be served following the service.

Pumpkin Fluff Dip Ingredients 1 (16 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed 1 (5 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix 1 (15 ounce) can solid pack pumpkin 1 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice (adjust this to how “pumpkiny” you want it.) Instructions In a large bowl, mix together instant vanilla pudding mix, pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice. Fold in the thawed frozen whipped topping. Chill in the refrigerator until serving. Serve with ginger snaps, Nilla wafers, or cinnamon graham crackers.
Halloweeño Jalapeño Poppers Serves: 20 Poppers Ingredients 10 jalapeño peppers, sliced in half lengthwise and pith/ seeds removed (use rubber gloves so your hands don’t burn from the jalapeño). Leave the stem if you can on some or all of the halves. 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 8 ounces jack cheese, shredded 1 scallion (green onion), finely chopped ½ teaspoon salt 1 package refrigerated crescent rolls (I use Pillsbury) 2 eggs, beaten candy eyeballs (can be purchased at Michael’s or on Amazon or you can always use a little cream cheese and piece of a black olive for the eyes) Instructions Preheat oven 400° F. In a small bowl, mix the cream cheese, jack cheese, scallion and salt until well blended. Roll out the crescent rolls and separate into 4 rectangles (not triangles) with a perforation in the middle of each. Press your fingers into the perforations to seal them. Using a pizza cutter, cut each rectangle into 10 long pieces lengthwise. Fill each jalepeño half with the cheese mixture. Wrap each jalapeño half with the dough, leaving a space for the eyes. Use two pieces of dough if necessary. Brush with egg mixture and place on baking sheet. Bake in oven for 8-10 minutes. Remove from the oven and press the eyes into the cheese where the opening is. Remove eyes before eating. You may also use a little cream cheese and a piece of black olive for the eyes. Serve immediately.

* When you make a chicken in the crockpot, use this trick to have it come out moist and delicious: Prepare the bird as normal, rinsing and patting dry, then seasoning. Ball up six to eight wads of aluminum foil -- enough to cover the bottom of the crockpot. Put bird in breast-side up on top of the foil balls. The chicken should not be touching the sides of the pot. Cook on low 6-8 hours for a succulent dinner! * “To use the last of the peanut butter in a glass jar, simply add your morning oatmeal for a yummy flavored breakfast. Or add sliced bananas and a couple tablespoons of milk for a delicious dessert!” -- J.S. in Kansas * To help kids in both becoming responsible for the food choices they make and being a helpful member of the household, encourage them to choose a family meal each week, and then help to prep or even cook the meal according to their ability. Experts say this offers a good opportunity to talk about nutritional choices and the impact of different food-preparation techniques.

* “If you purchase sodas or other drinks that are linked together with plastic rings, do the little critters a favor: Cut open the loops with scissors so that there are no rings for animals or sea life to get caught in.” -- A.A. in Florida * When you are zesting or juicing oranges, lemons or limes for a recipe, go ahead and do several at a time. Freeze the citrus zest and juice in an ice-cube tray. You can pop out the cubes and use them in recipes later on. * Lightly squish your toilet paper roll as you put a new one on. It will not spin as freely but still functions, meaning less waste. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
