U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES RECOGNIZES DRMC FOR ORGAN DONOR ENROLLMENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS Danville, VA (October 5, 2015) - Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC) was among a select group of hospitals nationwide recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for reaching gold, silver, and bronze levels of achievement for conducting activities that promoted enrollment in state organ donor registries. The hospitals are part of a national hospital campaign, sponsored by HHS’s Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which has added 327,659 donor enrollments to state registries nationwide since 2011, exceeding the goal of 300,000. DRMC conducted awareness and registry campaigns to educate staff, patients, visitors, and community members about the critical need for organ, eye, and tissue donors and, by doing so, increased the number of potential donors on the state’s donor registry. DRMC earned points for each activity implemented between August 2014 and April 2015 and was recently awarded silver recognition through the Workplace Partnership for Life Hospital Campaign. Of the 1,228 hospitals and transplant centers participating in the campaign, 400 were awarded recognition during this phase of the campaign. See the full list of hospitals recognized here. This campaign is a special effort of HRSA’s Workplace Partnership for Life to mobilize the nation’s hospitals to increase the number of people in the country who are registered organ, eye, and tissue donors. The campaign unites donation advocates at hospitals with representatives from their organ procurement organizations, Donate Life America affiliates, and state and regional hospital associations. Working together, the teams leverage their communications, resources and outreach efforts to most effectively spread word of the critical need for donors. DRMC worked with Carolina Donor Services on the campaign. Carolina Donor Services is among a select group of organ procurement organizations nationwide recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for working with hospitals and transplant centers in its service area to conduct activities that raised awareness of the critical need for organ donation. Carolina Donor Services and these facilities are part of the national Workplace Partnership for Life (WPFL) Hospital Campaign, sponsored by HHS’s Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). For more information about Danville Regional’s participation in this campaign, contact Andy Towler at 434.799.3814. Local Offices Team Up to Help Farmers Make the Most Out of the 2016 Farmers’ Market Season Danville, VA (October1, 2015) – Virginia Cooperative Extension, Danville Regional Foundation, City of Danville and the Pittsylvania County Office of Agricultural Development are excited to announce a second three-part regional training series for local farmers to learn best practices for participating in farmers’ markets across the region. This series is a follow-up to the well-attended spring series offered in April 2015. Beginning Tuesday November 10th, the trainings will be held from 4 pm to 7 pm and are designed to help farmers cultivate success at famers’ markets and other direct to consumer outlets. Thanks to generous sponsorship by Danville Regional Foundation, there is no cost to attend the training, but registration is required. The trainings will cover irrigation and planting schedule, prevention and treatment of common crop diseases, marketing your strengths, using technology to increase sales, and fall & winter crops. Dinner will be provided at each event, as well as time to network with other local farmers and farmers’ market vendors. Farmers’ markets are growing in popularity in the Dan River Region and all across the country. In the last 20 years, the number of markets grew from 1,700 to more than 8,000 nationwide. Local communities now understand the important role that farmers’ markets play in supporting the local economy and the health and wellness of residents. For every dollar spent at a conventional grocery store, 16 cents goes back into the local economy. However, when shopping at the farmers’ market, more than 60 cents of each dollar stays within the local economy and 99 cents stays within the state. In addition, those who have a farmers’ market in their community are more likely to consume the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, a key factor in reducing the risk of obesity and chronic disease. With the goal of increasing business for local farmers and improving the health of our communities, a regional group was formed in early 2015 to discuss ways to support local farmers and farmers markets. This training series is the second effort by this regional cohort. To register, please contact Kenny Porzio at 434-797-8961 or porziks@ danvilleva.gov. The Virginia Cooperative Extension, the City of Danville, the Pittsylvania County Office of Agricultural Development and the Danville Regional Foundation are coordinating the trainings. The schedule is as follows: All trainings will be held at the Community Room in the Danville Community Market at 661 Craghead Street. They will begin at 4 pm and end at 7 pm with dinner provided. There is no cost but reservations are required. • Session 1: Tuesday, November 10, 2015 Irrigation and Planting Schedule Prevention and Treatment of Common Crop Diseases Locality Break-out Sessions: General Vendor Forum • Session 2: Tuesday, November 17, 2015 Marketing Your Strengths Using Technology to Increase Sales Locality Break-out Sessions: Local Demographics as a Marketing Tool • Session 3: Tuesday, November 24, 2015 Fall & Winter Crops Greenhouse Basics

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up the remaining open areas of the jar. He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.” “Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.” “If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party, or fix the disposal.” “Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.” Author Unknown

October 6, 2015 (Danville, VA) Bobby Carlsen Photography has announced a new community partnership with the Danville Area Humane Society to encourage shelter pet adoptions. Carlsen, who is an international awardwinning Certified Professional Photographer (CPP), has recently adopted his own shelter dog as a family pet. Carlsen said, “I love animals, and have always enjoyed photographing them. If my photographs can help these guys find homes and give them a fresh start, then I feel I’ve helped in some small way.” Paulette Dean, executive director of the Danville Area Humane Society, explained that with the influx of animals to the shelter, finding adoptive homes for each animal can be difficult. Dean believes the power of highquality, professional imagery will help encourage people to consider adopting a shelter dog or cat. “We are absolutely thrilled with our partnership with Bobby Carlsen Photography,” Dean said. “We know that their beauty and personalities will come to life through Bobby’s amazing abilities and talents.” According to Dean, the photographs have already received positive response from shelter visitors and online audiences. Dean said, “How grateful we are for the kindhearted people in this community who support us in our efforts to help the animals. Bobby Carlsen is one of those people, and we appreciate him, his gift, and his generosity.” Carlsen has recently celebrated the tenyear anniversary of his business by relocating the Bobby Carlsen Photography studio to 312 Main Street in Danville. Carlsen said he envisions the new studio location, i n the heart of Danville’s rapidly growing River District, will foster stronger relationships within the community. Carlsen said, “Our partnership with the Danville Area Humane Society is just a start.” Carlsen’s pet photographs may be viewed on the Danville Area Humane Society’s adoption website at www.petfinder.com and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/dahs and www.facebook. com/bobbycarlsenphotography .

A Halloween Poem ëThe Dance of Death’ all is well the death of me all I could and could not be. the swell of tides the dark of day could not repel the night away. I could not speak I could not scream the black of night became a dream. The ocean’s hands they reach so deep, their tentacles are there for keeps. I’ve robbed the Man and left him bare the Prince of Time just standing there. How could you know, of what I speak? Your mind is strong your eyes are weak. I’m tired now of Death’s long Dance... Long to be alone in circumstance. by: Delores V. Kerns (2015)

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

NORMA KENDRICK - Office Manager

When I think of loyalty and passion for Danville Toyota, I think of Norma Kendrick. She has been with us since 1985, made an attempt to retire, and came out of her short retirement just to be with us again. Norma is a strong woman with a heart of gold. Her work ethic is impeccable, her knowledge is unmatched, and her willingness to accept change is incomparable (even though she will fight the change every step of the way...she is always willing to accept it). She is a role model and unbeknownst to her, a “life coach” to some of us...me included. Norma has stuck with us through the good times, cheering us on; and cried with us during the bad times. She is truly a priceless and irreplaceable gem in our Toyota Family. Norma Kendrick, we thank you with every ounce of sincerity humanly possible. Thank you for all of the hours, the stress, the fixes, the compassion you bestow on all of those you meet, your example as a worker and a moral person, your passion for this company and our family, your motherly love, and your loyalty. We celebrate 30 years with Danville Toyota and the Wiseman Family, and we are looking forward to many, many more!!!! We love you Norma!!!

Dirty Dealing At The VA The Department of Veterans Affairs’ Office of the Inspector General has just finished its long review of anonymous allegations about a senior executive in the Philadelphia Veterans Benefits office. The VAOIG had been asked to investigate by the chairmen of the House and Senate Committees on Veterans Affairs. The charge: Inappropriate use of senior positions for personal benefit. The verdict: Guilty as charged. At the VA regional office in Philadelphia, the director created the very vacancy that she then applied for: The person who had the job was told he needed to relocate (under duress) to Los Angeles or he’d lose his job. She was approved for the post six days before the displaced employee even saw his reassignment package. (In another case, the then-current job holder was similarly shafted and hustled off to Baltimore so another person could have his job in St. Paul, Minnesota.) The new director received

a whopping $274,019.12 in relocation assistance when she moved 140 miles to her new position. Of that amount, $33,261.29 went directly into her pocket. She kept her executivelevel pay rate ($181,497), even though the new job had fewer responsibilities. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. Once the VAOIG got to looking around, it uncovered over 20 cases where executives took another position, got pay increases and had their moving expenses paid -- all during a time when the head of the VA said no executives would get a raise because of the backlog of claims. The salary increases, said the VAOIG, “did not consistently reflect changes in the positions’ scope of responsibility.” When the new salaries were given, they were substantially higher than what the predecessor was paid -- a ploy to get around the ban on pay raises. Boldness at its best BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper No boldness needed after Kevin Harvick blew the field away in Sunday’s AAA 400 at Dover Downs International Speedway, a race he needed to win to advance into NASCAR’s version of the Chase. Second-place finisher Kyle Busch was in awe of his performance. “That was the guy we wanted to knock out,” said Busch, who took on four tires to Harvick’s two on the final pit stop in hopes of challenging the defending champion for the win. “For as fast as Kevin was today (Sunday), I don’t know if eight tires would have beaten him. It seemed like he had on eight tires.” There’s no reason to be polite about Harvick’s dominate run Sunday. He had the field covered as he has the past two weeks, leading 571 of a possible 700 laps. However, Busch and his three other comrades at Joe Gibbs Racing have advanced into the playoffs too, combining to win nine of the previous 12 Sprint Cup races. Both Harvick and the Gibbs’ drivers have been strong on 1.5-mile tracks, and four of the final seven Chase races are scheduled on tracks of that size. Sunday’s masterpiece that Harvick carved to perfection was a once in a lifetime experience to watch. He was in a different time zone, and his competition was well aware of that. Over the years I’ve seen lots of races and drivers with their backs to the wall, but Harvick’s latest performance with “there-is-no-tomorrow” staring him directly in his face was one of the best I have ever seen. And all of this sounds good for the Harvick team, but despite what happened Sunday at Dover there are still the Gibbs and Penske cars to contend with. And no matter how good you are mistakes can end a team’s championship run. It’ll be interesting to see how Harvick handles the pressure of winning back-to-back championships. The Gibbs cars are the ones to beat. The Penske cars of Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano need more speed if they are to contend. They don’t have the strength at this point to match the power of the Harvick cars. Saturday night’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway marks the beginning of the next threerace round in the Chase. After the last two races in the Chase, I’m waiting to see what and who will derail the No. 4 car. How the Harvick team responds following two weeks of relentless pressure will be worth watching. If the emotional turmoil doesn’t sit in and play havoc with the 4 team and they can maintain their competitive level for seven more weeks, we may be crowning a champion early. Harvick’s win at Dover was his third of the season and first at Dover; and sixth consecutive victory for Team Chevy at the 1-mile concrete oval. In addition, the victory marked the 750th win for Chevy in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, more than any other manufacturer. Strong run for Busch: Kyle Busch went from being on the bubble to a strong finish in Sunday’s AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway. Busch needed just that to advance into the second round of NASCAR’s playoffs. “We really had a good race car, so my guys did a great job preparing a good piece for us,” said Busch, who earned his third runner-up spot of the season. “I had a little bit of concern just based off the short amount of practice time that we got and the way the car was feeling in those practice sessions. I just wasn’t quite as confident in it as I wanted to be. I never got a good feel for what I thought I needed to race.” I’m no expert in picking winners, but in my book its Busch to catch Kevin Harvick and win this year’s championship. different each week. Check crafts, art, writing or any kind of class at the senior center. Look into a reading or current-events discussion group at the library. If you’re near a college, attend a lecture or audit a class. * If you go to an indoor mall, use that as an opportunity to walk in a climate-controlled environment. If you can locate a seniors workout class, sign up. Ask about a swim class at the YMCA. Take a friend, so you’re not tempted to stay home. Stretch your time away by including a stop for a cup of coffee or a meal, or a visit to the library. * Sign up to volunteer: animal shelter, church, homeless shelter, hospital baby ward, school library, reading to children ... the list is nearly endless. Don’t let the cold keep you indoors this winter!

Short days when the sun stays low in the sky, even at noon ... cold temperatures that make us want to stay inside -- winters can be dark, in more ways than one, and mental health can be affected. If we don’t get enough sunlight, we don’t make enough serotonin, the “happy mood” chemical, and our natural routines can be upset. Cabin fever can set in when we hibernate, and that can lead to depression. The key is to stay as active as possible. Consider whether planning for regular, specific outings this winter can add to your (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc. mental well-being. Here are some ideas: * Get outside. Go somewhere, just to be in a different place for a little while. The bookstore, craft shop, indoor mall, grocery store, library, a friend’s house, the movies, the gym -- anyplace different Red Bird Times (but warm) can be a mood elevator. Sponsored * Be social. Count Your Blessings! Not Your Problems!

2015 Colt Starting Challenge

Mane flowing, Tail flagged, Nostrils distended, Snorting, Prancing, Thundering hooves, Muscles rippling, Ears pricked, Drinking the wind in majesty just awaiting their cowboy or cowgirl to step inside the ring with them to test their skills. Do you dare to pick your boot up and climb in the saddle…? If so be prepared for the ride. Come see SEFHA’s 5th Invitational Colt Starting Challenge on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at the Olde Dominion Ag Complex in Chatham, VA at 10:00 AM. Three trainers, 2014 reigning champion Alicia Postreich McClelland, 2015 head judge and 2013 competitor Bobby Knight and new comer Ben Wallace go head to head to attempt to break and gentle three colts to be ridden in just a few short hours. Each trainer draws a number to see who gets to train which horse and they get two rounds to attempt it, all doing it at the same time. At the end of the day the round pens are removed and an obstacle course is set up. The trainers will then guide their horse through the course and the judges will determine who got the farthest with their horse throughout the day and through the obstacle course with the most ease and care for the horse. The winner takes home a trophy saddle and buckle, along with being named SEFHA’s 2015 Colt Starting Champion! You don’t have to own horses to enjoy this weekend. It is an entertaining, educational and family fun-filled event. Gates open Saturday, October 17, 2014 at 8:00AM, Competition starts at 10:00AM. Join us Friday night, October 16, 2015 at 6:30PM to meet and greet the trainers and see them demonstrate their own personal horses. Tickets are only $15 for the whole weekend, Friday night and Saturday included!! Vendors will be set up for shopping on both days. Tickets are available at Southern States in Chatham, Karen’s Hallmark at Danville mall, online at www.sefha.net or available at the gate. For more information contact David Tuggle, President of SEFHA – 434792-3811.

FALL TIP- The Importance of Clean Gutters Every autumn, trees and shrubs take on their brilliant display of reds, oranges, purples, and yellows that mark the end of the growing season. Fall foliage may make for ideal photo backdrops and scenic days in the countryside, but closer to home leaves may be more of a hindrance than an aesthetic pleasure. The hundreds of leaves that adorn the maples, oaks and other trees near homes will eventually fall as autumn turns into winter. Some will float down to lawns, while others will get lodged in gutters and downspouts, posing problems that can cause substantial and potentially costly problems for homeowners. Homeowners know that gutter cleaning is an important part of fall home maintenance, but they may not completely understand why. Gutter cleaning can be a messy and time-consuming project, making it a project many homeowners are apt to put off. Waiting to clean gutters can lead to considerable problems, so it’s best to tackle the job well in advance of the winter. Gutters guide rainwater and runoff from the roof so it drains properly away from homes. When gutters are clogged with leaves, a number of problems can occur. • Leaks: Water will take the path of least resistance. When clogged gutters do not allow the water to drain away properly, water will find other ways to the ground. It may work itself right into the walls and ceilings of the home. In addition to damaging walls and ceilings, moisture inside the home can promote mold growth. It also makes interior spaces more appealing to pests. • Excess weight: Gutters are meant to hold the weight of traveling water and not much more. Gutters filled with leaves and other debris can quickly become heavy. This stresses the entire gutter system and can cause the gutters to fall off of the home entirely. • Nesting areas: Clogged gutters can serve as nesting areas for insects and birds.

Mosquitoes and other insects lay eggs in pooling water. Gutters can quickly become breeding spots for harmful pests. Furthermore, birds may nest in gutters, creating unsightly messes and more damage. Seeds that sprout in clogged gutters can grow unchecked. • Ice-damming: Left untreated, pooled water and leaves in gutters can freeze over. Blocked water can back up and push against the roof, lifting shingles and destroying the roof in the process. • Foundation trouble: Clogged gutters also may contribute to flooded basements and cracked foundations. Leaking water will pool around the foundation, expanding when frozen and causing cracks in basement and crawlspace walls. It also can cause driveways and other cement areas around the home to sag and crack. Gutter cleaning should be scheduled in the spring and fall of each year. Homeowners can hire gutter-cleaning services to handle the job or do the job themselves. Rinse the gutters with water from the hose afterward to ensure good run-off. Take the time to seal any leaks as well. This routine maintenance can save homeowners many headaches and prevent some very expensive repairs.

1. Who wrote and released “The Goodbye Girl”? 2. Name the singer who was born William Howard Ashton. 3. Who released “Homburg” and when? 4. What group released “Neon Rainbow” in 1967? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “When you were a child you were treated kind, But you were never brought up right, You were always spoiled with a thousand toys but still you cried all night.” Answers 1. David Gates, lead singer of Bread, in 1977. It was the theme song to the film of the same name, starring Richard Dreyfuss. 2. Billy J. Kramer. It was John Lennon’s idea to add the middle initial, for Julian. Kramer allegedly hated it, not knowing it was the name of Lennon’s son. 3. Procol Harum, in 1967. “Homburg” was the follow-up to “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” with the same theme of resignation. It hit No. 1 in multiple countries but only reached No. 34 in the U.S. 4. The Box Tops. 5. “19th Nervous Breakdown,” by the Rolling Stones, 1966. It climbed to No. 2 in both the U.S. and U.K. The original song was released in mono, and stereo can be found only in bootleg copies. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Forty-five million Americans are currently living in poverty. For these families and individuals, a warm coat is a budget extra they simply cannot afford. URW Community Federal is asking for you to help us make a difference in our neighbor’s lives by donating coats during our upcoming coat drive! We are working to collect clean, gently used warm coats to support our coat drive program, between now and October 15th at all URW Branches. The process is simple: you drop off your extra coat(s) and URW takes care of the rest. All donated coats will be given to a local agency for distribution to local children in need. If you are a teacher and know of a child in your school that does not have a coat, please let us know. Our goal is that no child will be left out in the cold in the URW Community.

life, and he was accused of “many vile adulteries and murders.” The Catholic Encyclopedia calls him “a disgrace to the Chair of Peter.” After 12 years he was forced out of Rome, but he returned the following year, 1045, and ousted Pope Sylvester III. Later that same year, a pious priest named John Gratian offered Benedict a large sum of money to vacate the post, which he did, allowing Gratian to become Pope Gregory VI. Unsurprisingly, Benedict soon changed his mind, and with Sylvester III still claiming the papal seat, there were now three popes vying for supremacy. Finally, at the end of 1046, the Council of Sutri declared Benedict and Sylvester deposed, Gregory was encouraged to resign, and a German bishop was proclaimed Pope Clement II. * Farmers in California are responsible for 95 percent of broccoli production in the United States.
