Just a heads up! The Thanksgiving Issue Of The Piedmont Shopper Hits Stands Wednesday, November 25th, 2015!

Paying Respect: A True Memorial Drive It was about two years ago when Tony Pass, Veteran and President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 4420, was driving down Memorial Drive and the name of the street got him thinking. What else could be done to bring our veterans and servicemen and women to the forefront of the community’s mind? With that goal and a vision, the Eagles purchased 100 American Flags, stepping out on the faith that a way to respectfully display them would take shape. With hard work and persistence, it did. 34 flags are now proudly flying on a portion of Memorial Drive, which has now been given a secondary and honorary name of “Patriot’s Way” by City Council. Tony says that what he is most proud of with this project is for the Eagles to have been able to partner with the city to get this done in a safe manner, so as not to disrupt traffic or utility poles. The Eagles provided all materials necessary, and hold a five year contract to keep the flags maintained, as well as raising and lowering the flags. Old Glory will now line “Patriot’s Way” 7 days before and afterVeteran’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and 9/11. The Eagles’ patriotic efforts can also be seen in front of Southeast Energy, in the form of an American flag, VA State flag, and one flag for each of the branches of military. Pass and the Eagles will continue to find ways to honor veterans, so their sacrifices are never forgotten. “This whole town, county, and country, need to pay more respect for what veterans have done. That’s the reason we’ve done this. For the ones who have fought, who fight today, and the ones who will fight tomorrow.” -Tony Pass

Perception of Wealth

Dan View • Westover Library Goodwill • Food Lion-Westover

One day a very wealthy father took his son on a trip to the country for the sole purpose of showing his son how it was to be poor. They spent a few days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

After their return from the trip, the father asked his son how he liked the trip. “It was great, Dad,” the son replied. “Did you see how poor people can be?” the father asked. “Oh Yeah,” said the son.

“So what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father. The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.” The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “It showed me just how poor we really are.” Too many times we forget what we have and concentrate on what we don’t have. What is one person’s worthless object is another’s prize possession. It is all based on one’s perspective. Sometimes it takes the perspective of a child to remind us what’s important.

Special to the Piedmont Shopper Following the results of Sunday’s AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, Team Penske, a favorite to win it all in this year’s championship run, finds itself in a hole and under a lot of pressure for drivers Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski to advance into the title run at Homestead-Miami Speedway two weeks away. Keselowski was a shoo-in to advance until the final 18 laps Sunday when suddenly something went awry, snatching a certain win away from the former champion. “We know we need to win the next two races to win the championship,” said a dejected Keselowski following the race. “The good news is we have the opportunity to do that. That’s the only way to look at it. We have the team, and we have the desire. Now we need to go out there and perform.” Keselowski is still reeling and searching for clues on how and why Jimmie Johnson way able to take away an almost certain win following his dominant performance Sunday, leading 312 of 334 laps, the most ever in the 18-year history of Texas Motor Speedway. It was as devastation a loss for Keselowski as the one for teammates Logano, who was 45 laps from making it into the title run at Martinsville Speedway last week before a run-in with rival Matt Kenseth booted him out of contention of winning the race. But now it’s Phoenix on Sunday and an uphill battle for the Penske Team, and Logano needs to win or he’s out. Should that happen and Keselowski finish second, then it would take a stumble by the teams of Martin Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards for both of the Penske cars to make it into the finale. Mathematically, Keselowski could still make the Chase via points at Phoenix, the third and final race of Round 3. But a lot of things must happen that’s in his favor to consider him anything but a long shot. Johnson said he was aware of the pressure of teammates racing against each other. “It’s tough and it can wear on you,” said the six-time champion. “There’s nothing easy about it. It would be good to have both cars running 1-2 up front. If you are really ducking it out for the win, you’re supposed to leave your teammate an extra inch or two. Championship is on the line, and your career is on the line. It will be interesting to see how that goes and how each one handles the pressure of advancing.” Logano, who made an early exit from Sunday’s race following a blown tire, said racing a teammate will be difficult. “Sometimes you have to roll with the punches. The team is strong. It didn’t take any wind out of our sails today (Sunday), and we showed how fast this thing was after we crashed. I am very proud of our team. I feel great about our chances at Phoenix. We are not out of this thing yet.” Should Logano fail to win Sunday at Phoenix, it will mean the top three winners this season – Logano (6 wins), Kenseth and Johnson (5 wins each) -- will not be racing for the championship at Homestead. Those three have combined to win 16 of the 34 races this season. And they are not in the Chase, which is why the current format of determining a champion isn’t a favorite of mine. Maybe the old system was outdated and needs a fix, but at least you could have a bad day and still have a chance of winning all the marbles under the old system. Jeff Gordon is the only driver guaranteed a spot in the final race for the championship at Homestead. The final three spots will be decided Sunday at Phoenix. Truex holds the final transfer spot, a sevenpoint advantage on Carl Edwards. (Note: All quotes are from reliable NASCAR sources.)

Kathy Parrish

Our Mom, Kathy Parrish, received her beaut i f u l wings on Friday, November 6th, 2015. Her strong willed nature helped her battle many health issues over the past few years. Although our father Marc Parrish and we, Matt & Hilliary, are still here, we know our Mom is forever with us. Also surviving are her mother Peggy Worley, her sister Sandra Myers and husband Frank Myers, brother-inlaw Mike Parrish and wife Susan Hannah, sister-inlaw Helen Parrish Hardy and husband Glen, nieces and nephews Penny Holley and husband Doug Holley, Hugh Parrish, Sara Parrish Fowler and husband Taylor, Meghan Norton Crane and husband Jordan, Jon Norton, great niece Katie and a great nephew Vincent. We know her infectious laugh is lighting up the streets of Heaven, just as it lit up our lives. It may be bias to say that she was the best Mom in the world, but in all reality she was. The life lessons she instilled in us will remain forever strong. She left a lasting impact on everyone she met and had an endless amount of love for others. However, nothing could compare to the love she had for us, our Dad, and our dog Bailey. Don’t get us wrong, she worried over us and had the occasional urge to nag about something, but it was for the love she had for us. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from family and friends throughout the last few years, especially in recent days. Please find comfort in knowing Mom is reunited with her father and laughing all through Heaven. At the request of the family, memorial donations may be directed to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 3959 Electric Road #222, Roanoke, VA 25018 or to Danville Cancer Association, 223 Riverview Drive Suite 5, Danville, VA 24540. “Into The Holiday Swing” By the time this column goes to print, we will be full scale into the swing of the holiday season, November and December, Thanksgiving and Christmas. If a columnist could do multiple smiley face emojis in a newspaper, I would. Alas, due to issues of printing and professionalism, I cannot do so and, thus, you will just have to trust me when I say I really, really love this time of year. “But Pastor Wagner, there will be grinches galore filing lawsuits over nativity scenes, and being professionally offended every time someone utters the words ‘Merry Christmas!’ There will even be people putting up billboards claiming that Jesus is a myth!” Of course there will. Grinches have been a part of Christmas since Herod killed a town full of babies trying to destroy Jesus. He could not stop Jesus, and no one today will be any more successful than he was. Thanksgiving and Christmas give us not just two great celebrations, but also two great reminders, a reminder that God has been very good to us and we are blessed to give him thanks, and a reminder that he loved us enough to become flesh and die for us. All of that said, I would like to be very proactive during this amazing holiday season. Things get so busy this time of year, we must be very careful and well planned or we will miss many wonderful opportunities. For Thanksgiving, I suggest that we all do something more than just give thanks. Let us also give others reason to give thanks. Find some folks who will be eating alone, or not at all, for Thanksgiving. Invite them over to your house, make them part of your extended family,

bring them into the fold of Thanksgiving. Jesus said, “For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in.” Pressed for an explanation, he said, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” For Christmas, I suggest that we emulate what Jesus did for us. Let us leave our comfortable homes and take the good news of the coming of Christ, and the peace and good will he offers, to those who need it most. Go ahead and put a night or two of Christmas caroling on your schedule, before that schedule gets filled up with parties and shopping. Go to nursing homes, Hospice houses, shut ins. Go to those who are depressed and hurting and scared. Add names to your gift list. Go beyond your family and friends, and add things like the poor family that will likely have little or nothing. Add your church, look around and find a need it has, and help to meet it. Add a missionary family on a foreign field, they are away from home and friends and family, and could use the encouragement. I also suggest that you add some names to your prayer list, and keep them there. Those grinches? Those people determined to be offensive and insulting toward Christ and Christians? Add those names. It is always far more likely for you to win someone to the truth if you love them enough to spend serious time praying for them. One more thing. Watch the Muppet Christmas Carol, and the old Rudolph claymation. You will be glad you did.

Strange Spells May be Due to Anxiety

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been having weird spells for about six months. They occur only occasionally and last a couple of days and nights. They awaken me out of sleep and are a little frightening. It starts with a burning sensation on the right side of my nose. I feel as if I have to remember something, and a wave of warmth floods over my upper torso, down to my arms. I feel my heart fluttering, and am a little sick to my stomach. I also have funny sensations in my right ear. It lasts a few seconds, and I just have to ride it out. When it’s over, I feel weak for a while. I saw a neurologist, who mentioned that it might be anxiety, which made me mad -- being awakened out of a sound sleep doesn’t seem to me that I am anxious, as I have no trouble sleeping! He wanted to put me on a medication with a lot of side effects, such as dizziness and hallucinations. I do not want to be on medication, but I also don’t want to have a grand mal seizure. He could not tell me if I could have one or not. I only want affirmation that I am not crazy! -L.G. ANSWER: You aren’t crazy. Your neurologist may be right -- this can be related to anxiety -but I wouldn’t jump to that diagnosis without considering a few things first. A warm sensation over different parts of your body should make your doctor think of conditions like carcinoid syndrome and pheochromocytoma. These are tumors that secrete hormone-like substances that can cause odd feelings, such as flushing or warmth, in different parts of the body. They can be screened for with simple

urine and blood tests. I agree with you that being awakened with this sensation makes anxiety or panic attack less likely. It does not sound like a seizure disorder to me. Sometimes, people notice sensations that defy medical explanation. In that case, we generally just try to make sure it isn’t something that doesn’t threaten life or health and help people minimize and live with the symptoms. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have to take levothyroxine in order to obtain an acceptable TSH number. I have read that some doctors are stating that there is a relationship between hypothyroidism and gluten intolerance, possibly even celiac disease. Is this proven to the point that a patient should alter his or her diet and give up the basic foods of bread and cereal? -- R.K. ANSWER: People with celiac disease have a much higher risk of autoimmune thyroid disease (especially Hashimoto’s, the most common cause of low thyroid) than expected, to the point where everyone with celiac disease should have a blood test to look at thyroid levels. Celiac disease, or intolerance of gluten in general, may have few or subtle symptoms, and it might be worthwhile to consider testing for celiac disease in people with autoimmune thyroid disease. However, I would not recommend a drastic change in diet for people with thyroid disease if there are no symptoms. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Q: I’m glad to see that “Agent X” is finally on TNT. I’ve been looking forward to seeing Sharon Stone in this. She is wonderful, of course, but I’m also impressed with the actress who plays Olga. What can you tell me about her? -Jonathon T., via email A: Olga Fonda, whom you might remember from “The Vampire Diaries” and “Real Steel,” is the gorgeous actress who plays Olga Petrovka. She was born in Russia and came to the U.S. when she was 14 as a foreign exchange student. She was thrilled to come to America, which is, in her words: “a land of opportunities and dreams. So, when I got the opportunity to go to the United States, I happily grabbed it. I always wanted to get an experience of living in different countries, studying in different countries, learning the different cultures, and, of course, having better opportunities.” Aside from working on the show, Olga is thrilled to work with Sharon Stone and Jeff Hephner. “There is a great mix of action, mystery and drama -- and a sense of humor. It’s a well-done show. Sharon is beautiful and smart and a talented woman. And she is fun to be around. She is very supportive of her fellow actors. There was one scene she did where she had to work with kids. It was such a great experience to observe that she was so kind and so patient. It was a really beautiful moment. She’s a superstar. And Jeff is a talented, nice, good-looking guy with a great, great sense of humor. We have so much fun together.” *** Q: Can you tell me what the actress who plays Maeby on “Arrested Development” has been doing lately? -- Linda R. in Virginia A: Alia Shawkat stars in a new TBS dark-comedy series of her own, which is currently in development. It’s called “Search Party,” and it co-stars

Olga Fonda Photo Cred: TNT John Early, John Reynolds and Meredith Hagner. The show follows a group of four self-absorbed 20-somethings who come together when a former college acquaintance mysteriously disappears. The series will debut sometime in 2016. *** Q: My wife heard that there is going to be a new “Star Trek” series. Is that true? -- Paul T., via email A: A new “Star Trek” series has indeed been greenlighted at CBS, with an expected debut in January 2017. Prolific writer and producer Alex Kurtzman (producer of the “Star Trek” featurefilm reboots) is developing. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The new ‘Star Trek’ will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.” The latest in the “Star Trek” feature films won’t premiere until 2019, but die-hard Trekkies will have plenty to tide them over until then. GIFT IDEAS FOR THE SPECIAL SENIORS IN YOUR LIFE With lifetimes of experiences and seemingly everything they could ever want or need in life already at their disposal, seniors can be difficult to shop for come the holiday season. Many even insist that their family members save their money and not buy them anything for the holidays. But if the thought of Grandma or Grandma not having something to open come the holidays is simply unacceptable, consider the following gift ideas. Activity assistance devices The realities of getting older often mean the body slows down and activities may not be as easy as they used to be. Many active seniors are not ready to live sedentary lives, nor should they be forced to do so. Plenty of products exist that can make life easier and more comfortable for older adults. Television amplifying headphones are one product that can be a great fit for seniors, particularly those having difficulty hearing their televisions. The headphones amplify the sound of the programming without disturbing others in the room, and many such headphones even allow users to mute their televisions. This feature is perfect for someone who likes to watch TV while a spouse is

sleeping or reading in the same room. Other devices that can make life easier for seniors include magnifying products or bookholders. In addition, gel seat cushions can take pressure off of the spine in the car or at home. Food Food is always a handy gift because it doesn’t take up much room and can be enjoyed at a recipient’s leisure. Perhaps there is something the senior in your life used to enjoy as a child but now finds hard to come by. A search of the Internet may uncover that special treat. You may be able to ship a specialty soft drink or favorite cookie that is not available in a nearby store. Otherwise, ask a store manager if a particular item that’s not in stock in the store can be a special order. Photos What grandparent does not enjoy looking at his or her family members? Computer-savvy men and women can use photo software to design personalized photo books, calendars, mugs, and other photo-related gifts. Just about anything can be emblazoned with a photo, including tote bags and pillows. Another idea is to collect old photos and compile a memory book. Scan the images so they are preserved digitally and then print out the images in a book that includes the family history. Time Seniors who truly do not want or need anything probably will likely jump at the opportunity to spend time with loved ones. Treat a friend or family member to a meal out or simply spend a few hours chatting at his or her home. Sometimes the company of a new face and good conversation is the ideal gift.

* “To remove paint or stain from hands (even oil-based), use an old dry washcloth with liquid hand soap -- no water. After the paint is loose, rinse with warm water.” -- H.P. in Washington * “I found a terrific metal magnet strip that is for use in the kitchen. It was a great price at a local resale shop. I have used it in my mini workshop to hold jewelry-making tools by my craft desk. It is especially handy now that I am making many ornaments for gifts.” -E.L. in New Jersey * Use baking soda as a dry cleaning agent for fabric items such as suitcases, backpacks, boots, canvas items, etc. * “Try this baking tip from my mother: When you have a recipe that calls for dry spices (cinnamon, ginger, ground clove, etc.), cream them with the butter instead of sifting them with the dry

ingredients. I do feel like they become infused in the recipe better.” -- A. in Illinois * Fresh ginger can be frozen. Simply grate as needed. Flavor remains, and it will stay fresh much longer. * “An oldie but a goodie, and certainly considerate of dear old Mom: In my family, you come to Thanksgiving dinner with your own plastic containers for leftovers. If you don’t bring your own, you don’t go home with tomorrow’s lunch. Mom instituted this rule after the first Thanksgiving when all the kids had moved out. We practically cleaned her out of Tupperware!” -- E.Y. in New Mexico Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Contact is 9740 Campo Road, No. 131, Spring Valley, CA 91977; oldkidsbooks.com; and 800-454-3726. *** Q: I began collecting sterling flatware a number of years ago and currently have examples of about 45 patterns. Can you recommend a reference book that is user-friendly? -- Ken, Philadelphia A: There are several guides available, but my personal favorite is “Warman’s Sterling Silver Flatware: Value & Identification Guide” by Mark F. Moran and published by Krause Books. This guide features 18,000 listings and values, with 1,200 photos, histories and descriptions. In identifying patterns, it is one of the easier references to use. It is my go-to book when I get a flatware question. *** Q: I have a cookie jar in the Franciscan Apple pattern. Can you tell me what is it worth? -- Janet, Pueblo, Colorado A: According to most price guides I consulted, your cookie jar is valued in the $50 to $75 range. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.

--Q: I have a 12-inch aluminum level made by Davis & Cook. I paid $150 for it and hope I got a bargain. -- Stan, Athens, Georgia A: You’ll be pleased to know that Davis & Cook levels are extremely rare, especially the 12-inch model. These date back to the early 1900s. According to “Antique Trader Tools Price Guide” by Clarence Blanchard and published by Krause Books, your level could be worth at least $1,000. Blanchard is president of Antique & Collectible Tools, Inc., and is a nationally recognized expert in this field of collecting. In other words, you made an excellent buy. *** Q: My mom was a gradeschool teacher throughout the 1930s and ‘40s. She managed to save about three dozen books for children, including some that are first editions. I would like to sell them and hope you can help me. -Laura, Hondo, Texas A: Books for children have become quite collectible in recent years, and values have risen accordingly. One of the better businesses that deals in these types of books is “The Prince & The Pauper Bookstore,” which has an inventory of more than 250,000 new, outof-print and simply used (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
