Tractor Supply Insert Inside! How to help distracted students Today’s students have more gadgets at their disposal than ever before. As technology like tablets and smartphones have become more prevalent in the lives of adults, such devices also have become more commonplace in the classroom. Some kids thrive when teachers utilize technology to enhance lesson plans, while others may be distracted by access to technology. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is one of the most common childhood disorders. ADHD can make it difficult for kids to maintain focus in the classroom, and that focus may be enhanced or further compromised by technology that’s capable of serving many different functions. Kids who use the technology to their advantage may find it improves their ability to grasp lessons, but some kids may be distracted by devices or even other items in the classroom that make it difficult for them to absorb lessons. Parents concerned about their kids’ ability to cope with distractions in the classroom and at home can take the following steps in an effort to help youngsters improve their academic performance. * Speak to your child’s teacher about seating assignments. Students who find it difficult to focus in the classroom may benefit from new seating assignments. Windows or hightraffic areas of the classroom, such as doorways, can compromise a student’s ability to focus. In addition, the back of the classroom is not the ideal spot for youngsters who find it difficult to focus on the teacher, as teachers may not notice kids in the back of the class as readily as they might with students sitting in the front of the room. * Encourage participation. Many teachers recognize the value of active participation in the classroom, but kids who are struggling to focus may shy away from participating because they are worried about embarrassing themselves in front of their classmates. Parents and teachers can work with students to encourage them to participate, reassuring them that they don’t need to be experts on a given subject to contribute to lessons. Even if students’ participation is limited to asking questions rather than answering them, encouraging kids to raise their hands and participate in class may help them focus more on the lessons being discussed. * Minimize distractions at home. Kids who have no trouble focusing in the classroom may find it’s a whole different ballgame when they arrive home to study or do their homework. Mom and Dad no doubt have their own gadgets around the house, and such devices as well as television may be too difficult for youngsters to ignore. At home, parents can create a safe haven from distraction by designating a room or area of the house for schoolwork. Such areas should be clear of distractions like television, telephones, video game consoles, and other gadgets that can compromise a student’s focus. Make such areas off limits to cellular phones and block social media websites from computers in such rooms so kids aren’t tempted to spend study time chatting with friends online. If a child’s study area is not in a separate room of the house, parents should avoid turning on the television until kids have finished their studies for the night. * Consider playing games designed to improve attention and focus. Games designed to improve attention can be a fun way for parents to help their youngsters conquer their concentration issues. For example, the creators behind Lumosity.com collaborated with researchers from universities around the world in an effort to design games to improve visual attention in people of various ages and backgrounds. Few kids are not enamored with games, and games to improve focus and attention may help kids without making them feel as though they are back in a classroom. Parents can speak with their child’s teacher to determine which games might be best suited for their youngsters.

Once there was a billionaire having amassed so much of wealth, got a severe eye irritation. He got the eminent doctor to treat his eye, after treatment the doctor advocated the patient to avoid bright light for one month so as to have natural healing and also it could add to the treatment for ensuring speedy recovery. Immediately the rich closed all his windows, replaced all the bright & colourful curtains with dull colour clothes. He removed all the chandeliers and luminous bulbs with lower wattage shades. Broadly speaking, he made all the mansion & it’s ambiance completely dark. A month later, the doctor paid a visit to his patient to enquire about the recovery. To the doctor’s astonishment everything in the house was made dark & dull. Then the doctor said, it’s a thing of small common sense that the billionaire could buy a pair of sunglasses which costs less, instead of spending so much money on all things to make them darker. Same phenomenon applies to all of us that we see many mistakes & errors in others. We are very eager to change the attitude & behaviour of others which doesn’t suit to our own. We have many likes & dislikes, and similarly other people also have. Many times we are interested in imposing our opinion & thinking on others that we are the only persons living without any errors & flaws in this world. Accordingly, we want to change this world with our own rules & theory. At last we forget that, other people who share this world equally with us also think in the similar pattern and expect us to behave according to their wishes. Then who cares about your rules & theory. In order to bring about certain change in the people around us, first is ‘we’ have to change according to the morals necessary for that change. Therefore any much needed change can occur only when it starts with us, then it can be spread to others.

Special to the Piedmont Shopper “We can’t let it end this way,” said a dejected Carl Edwards following NASCAR’s decision to halt the rain-soaked Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway late Sunday night. When the race was official after 219 of the 312 laps, Edwards was five points behind Martin Truex Jr. for the final spot to compete in the Championship Four Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. When heavy rains hit, it left Edwards, Kurt Busch and the Penske Fords of Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski painfully short in their quest to make the Championship Four. “I’m very disappointed for the whole team,” said Darian Grubb, crew-chief for Edwards and his Stanley Toyota team. “How hard they have worked all year and it comes down to something as simple as a rainout. We felt like we could have raced our way back into it and have a shot at it. “We want to do everything we can to bring that championship to Joe Gibbs Racing with Kyle Busch and the 18 team,” he added. “They overcame a lot this year with Kyle’s injury, and we are very proud of them and anything they ask of us we’ll help them out.” The race was delayed nearly seven hours by a series of rain, forcing NASCAR to start the race under the lights at the one-mile oval. While the race was unfortunate for some, it was a delight for Dale Earnhardt Jr., who collected his third-career Phoenix win. He led only 22 laps, but it took an odd series of circumstances to put the Hendrick Motorsports driver in front of the field when the last rain hit the speedway. But there’s one thing for sure, Mother Nature always has it way, and more importantly this time around it decided who would join Jeff Gordon Sunday at Homestead to decide the series title for this year. Gordon will be racing for his fifth and final championship, and will have to battle Kevin Harvick, who won the title last year, Kyle Busch and Truex Jr, who are vying for their first-career championship. Sunday’s race at Phoenix by all means was the most important race of the season, and one might wonder now if NASCAR was right by starting the race late with rain still in the area. It’s easy to say now that a Monday afternoon start when the weather was more promising would be the right call. But in hindsight, was it the right call or not? Not for Logano, who led the series with six wins this year. However, his feud with Matt Kenseth boiled over to Martinsville when Kenseth wrecked the Ford driver citing “payback” from an earlier race when Logano wrecked Kenseth. Needing a big day the following week at Texas Motor Speedway to bounce back, Logano suffered a flat tire just 10 laps into the race which sent him into the garage area for more than 60 laps. While Harvick was certainly the class of the field Sunday night, Logano was running third and was in position to make a charge to the front when rain forced NASCAR officials to call the race. “I just wanted another shot at it,” said Logano. “When you’re this close to seeing the lead, you just want one more restart.” That may be true, but beating Harvick on this Sunday with all the marbles on the line may be a little more than he wished for. But the season finale Sunday may or may not be a barnburner. Harvick, more than likely, will be the favorite following his first-career series crown last year. But Gordon is no pushover and neither is Busch, who defied the odds after a horrific crash in the season-opening Xfinity Series race at Daytona in February. Truex Jr. is the “underdog” and should he win it most likely would shock the racing world. So get ready for Homestead. Sunday a champion will be crowned and it will be all over. The only question left, who’s it going to be?

“The Preacher Red Carpet” I often sit and observe with amusement and introspection the effect that social media seems to have on the clergy. Many use it quite well, and maintain the attitude of John the Baptist who said of Jesus, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Others, though, seem to have become nothing short of full-tilt ecclesiastical divas.

Hornblower? He got famous for a video he made cursing people from the pulpit, “in the name of Jesus,” as he put it. The man must weigh at least 700 pounds, at least that is how big he appeared to me in a video of him preaching his famous message, “Don’t Give In To The Flesh.” “It’s all quite a spectacle, Bob, what do you make of it?” “Well, Karen, truthfully, it makes me scratch my head just a bit. I seem to recall Jesus washing the filthy feet of his disciples, touching the lepers, and not being concerned with wealth or fame. And His preaching seemed different, too. He preached really hard against sin, and was very specific, yet I always got the sense that he loved every sinner he was preaching to. “And his disciples, great preachers in their own right, seemed to emulate that humble spirit. I don’t recall an ounce of selfpromotion in any of them, they all seemed perfectly content to be unknown as long as Jesus was known.” “That’s something to ponder on, Bob, but I need to interrupt you for now, it looks as if a clergical catfight has broken out: Thom Truffle accidentally got in between Bubba Hornblower and a camera, and Bubba is currently sitting on him.”

Q: I am so happy that “Heroes” is back! Will there be another season? -- DeeDee T., via email A: “Heroes Reborn,” which started airing in September on Thursday nights on NBC, has been billed as an “event miniseries,” although that’s not to say there can’t be another season of this event. I recently spoke with series co-star Gatlin Green, who plays Emily on the show, and she told me she’d be down for continuing her role on the show. Gatlin said: “I think with a show like ‘Heroes,’ or any of these shows that have such big followings, there’s always going to be talk about more seasons, spin-offs and stuff like that. Obviously, anything can happen, and I’d be super happy if something did happen. We’re all on our toes waiting to hear if anything will happen.” Gatlin gave me some minor spoilers to get you through the rest of the run of this miniseries, which wraps in December: “There will be some romance between Emily and Tommy. And, like ‘Heroes’ always does, I think it’s really cool to see how we’ve started seeing the characters cross paths with each other. There’s obviously intense drama and more conflict in certain areas. I think it will be cool to see what happens with all the different characters and all the different storylines. But definitely look forward to plot twists and drama and romance.” *** Q: A local boy was nominated for a Nickelodeon HALO Award for his service to the community, and I wondered where I can watch the ceremony? -- Fred R., Miami A: Hosted, created and executive-produced by Nick Cannon, the “2015 Nickelodeon HALO Awards” is a one-of-a-kind concert event that honors young leaders from across the country. Now in its seventh year, the awards show recognizes teens who are doing extraordinary things in their communities by Helping and Lead-
Gatlin Green Photo Cred: Mike Windle/ NBC ing Others (HALO). The ceremony will be simulcast Sunday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. (ET/PT) across Nickelodeon, TeenNick, Nicktoons, TV Land, CMT, Nick.com and the Nick App. Walk the Moon (“Shut Up and Dance”) will perform. The four award honorees are Ethan Cruikshank (16) of Mechanicsville, Virginia; Riley Gantt (15) of Sherman Oaks, California; Joshua Williams (14) of Miami Beach, Florida; and Ruchita Zaparde (18) of Plainsboro, New Jersey. *** Q: Can you give me any “Nashville” news? -- Eric P., Lancaster, Pennsylvania A: Tony and Grammy Award-winning actor, singer and guitarist Steve Kazee will join the show as Riff in early 2016. His character is described as a country-music star at the top of his game 10 years ago; however, everything changed when he met Heidi, a Southern beauty with a budding musical career of her own. He fell in love and chose to leave fame and fortune behind for life with Heidi. But since he’s a new character on the nighttime sudster, I’ll assume it didn’t work out and he’s trying to make a musical comeback. Give Your Family the Gift of Good Health (Family Features) As colder months approach, many families enjoy spending time together on the couch watching football, indulging in delicious family recipes and preparing for the holiday season. Many of us look forward to this time of year when we can spend quality time with loved ones, relax, reflect on the year and look forward to the new year ahead. This can also be a challenging time to stay healthy, as people tend to stay bundled up indoors and the food seems to pile up on the dinner table. Learning how to eat well and stay active ahead of the holiday season may mean the difference between staying healthy or packing on a few extra pounds and creating habits that could lead to serious health issues down the road. That is one reason the Aetna Foundation is working to make nutritious foods and exercise programs readily available for families year-round. “Poor nutrition poses a challenge to America’s health, especially for vulnerable populations whose access to healthy food is often limited,” said Garth Graham, M.D., MPH, president of the Aetna Foundation. “We’re excited to support programs that help make healthy food and exercise programs more affordable and accessible to people nationwide.” There is a great need to increase access to nutritious foods in vulnerable communities and to make healthy food available, accessible and affordable for more people across the country. Millions living in underserved communities struggle to maintain healthy habits during the holiday season without the help of school-provided meals and activities. That is why the Aetna Foundation is working with nonprofit organizations across the country to provide healthy foods and exercise options and tools to more people year-round. These tips from the Aetna Foundation are designed to help people stay active and healthy during the holiday season.

1. Eat well. When grocery shopping for large (or small) family meals, choose fresh, seasonal, nutritious foods as often as possible. When fresh is not possible, keep in mind that frozen and canned fruits and vegetables are still healthy alternatives. To guard against nutrient loss, be sure to eat frozen fruits and veggies soon after purchase and steam or microwave them rather than boiling to minimize the loss of water-soluble vitamins. 2. Cook together. As you plan and cook meals for your friends and family over the holidays, inviting your children to cook with you is a great way to teach them about nutrition and better food choices. 3. Get off the couch. It can be tempting to curl up on the couch to stay warm and dry during the cold winter months, but find ways to stay active with your family - such as interactive dancing video games, an indoor game of hide-and-seek or dancing during commercials while you watch your favorite TV show. Mediterranean Diet Makes Brain Younger
groups (those who adhered to a Mediterranean diet versus those who didn’t) was the same as aging five years. The average brain volume was 13 percent larger, which is significant. This isn’t the first time the benefits to the brain have been studied. In 2010, a similar study concluded that the Mediterranean diet can help avoid damage to the parts of the brain that deal with thinking and memory. Those who adhered to the diet were 36 percent less likely to have damage. Those who generally stuck to the diet were 21 percent less likely. Ask your medical provider whether you should add these types of foods to your diet and stay away from the more harmful ones. For more information, search online for “Mediterranean diet,” and look for sites by the Mayo Clinic, the American Heart Association and WebMD as places to start.
--The Mediterranean diet has been in the news for years, but some of us aren’t sure if it offers any real benefits. Now we have a piece of the puzzle. In a recent study supported by the National Institutes of Health, participants experienced less brain atrophy after adhering to that type of diet, resulting in loss of fewer brain cells and maintaining cognition. The Mediterraneantype diet (called MeDi in researcher parlance), consists of low intake of dairy, poultry, meat and alcohol, and higher intake of fruit, fish, cereal, vegetables and fats that are (c) 2015 King Features monounsaturated (such as Synd., Inc. olive oil). City illuminates substation in France’s national colors Bridge Street Substation Photo Danville Utilities is illuminating its electric substation on Bridge Street in the national colors of France. The special display will continue through the end of the month. “The lights illuminating the substation were changed as a show of solidarity with the people of France,” Deputy City Manager Ken Larking said Tuesday. France’s national colors are blue, white and red. The French flag displays the colors in three vertical bands of equal width. Normally, the substation is lit up in a uniform glow. Lighting for the substation was installed earlier this year as part of the River District Development Project.

Buying a home for the first time is an exciting period in a person’s life. Deciding to buy a home often indicates buyers are ready to establish firm roots in a community where they can see themselves living for years to come. The process of buying a home is rarely easy, and first-time buyers may feel overwhelmed at times. Such feelings are perfectly normal and felt by first-time buyers regardless of their budgets or home preferences. But there are a few ways to make buying a home more enjoyable than it is nervewracking. • Examine your finances. The first step toward buying a home has nothing to do with deciding if you prefer a craftsman- or Tudor-style home. Before you even begin your search for a home, carefully examine your finances to determine how much is coming in and how much is going out of your household each month. Figure out how much debt you are currently carrying, be it student loan, automotive, consumer or any other types of debt. Order a credit report so you can see how prospective lenders are likely to see you, and address any errors you find on the report before meeting with any lenders. Peruse past bank statements to track your spending habits, looking for areas where you might be able to scale back if need be. • Be prepared when visiting lenders. Prospective borrowers can make the home-buying process go smoothly by having all of the necessary documentation ready when visiting potential lenders. Many mortgage lenders will want to see some recent pay stubs (from both borrowers if buying with a spouse or partner), a couple years’ worth of W-2s and tax returns, as well as your recent bank statements. You can always call ahead and ask lenders what they need to see when applying for a loan. Having these materials ready in advance means you will spend less time at the bank and more time finding the right home for you. • Secure financing before you begin house hunting. Many first-time home buyers might not realize the benefits of securing financing before they begin looking for a home. Mortgage preapproval lets buyers know how much a bank will loan them, meaning they won’t spend time looking at homes they can’t afford. In addition, preapproval means buyers won’t lose out on their dream homes as they scramble to secure financing after making an offer. • Work with a local real estate agent. Real estate agents are an invaluable resource to home buyers and are especially valuable to those buyers who have never before purchased a home. Agents can help first-time buyers navigate the often confusing and, at times, disappointing process of buying a home. Choose an agent who is established in the area where you want to buy a home. He or she can provide information about local property taxes and schools as well as a multitude of additional issues that first-time buyers may not think of. Agents also know the lay of the land regarding home prices, which can ease first-time buyers’ fears about overpaying for their first homes. A home is the biggest purchase many people will ever make. First-time buyers may be intimidated as they begin searching for their homes, but there are several ways to make the process go smoothly.

* Beloved British author Charles Dickens was forced to go to work at the age of 11, pasting labels on bottles of shoe polish in a boot-blacking factory. Soon after, his father was put in debtors’ prison, and when his mother and siblings went to live with him there; young Charles was left to live on the streets and fend for himself. It’s not surprising, then, that after Dickens achieved the great success he enjoyed as a writer, he was an ardent campaigner for children’s rights. * If you plan to become a patriotic citizen of Greece, I hope you have a good memory: The Greek national anthem has a whopping 158 verses. *** Thought for the Day: “The greatest analgesic, soporific, stimulant, tranquilizer, narcotic and to some extent even antibiotic -- in short, the closest thing to a genuine panacea -known to medical science is work.” -- Thomas Szasz (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

YMCA PROGRAMS FOR VETS Have you been to the Y lately? Did you know there are special programs there for veterans? The alliance between the armed forces and the YMCA goes back to 1861, in Abraham Lincoln’s day, when YMCA members provided relief services to the military in local encampments. The Y also offered education scholarships long before that benefit was established for veterans and active-duty personnel. The relationship has continued all these years. In 1984, the YMCA and the Department of Defense established a Memorandum of Understanding, which was renewed in 2004. And now, the VA and the YMCA have expanded their partnership to promote the health and well-being of veterans and their families. Who knew? The expanded agreement pairs Veterans Benefits Administration regional offices and Veterans Health Administration facilities with YMCAs to make sure that veterans are hooked up with resources in their communities, as well as their families and caregivers. Not every YMCA site has the
veterans program. The variety of programs is broad. This summer a new program started that provides career opportunities for veterans on public lands protecting natural and cultural resources. Some YMCAs have started scuba experiences for wounded veterans. Others sent the kids and families of veterans to camp. Typical programs can include health and fitness, aquatics, camping, family, child care, arts, community development, sports and teens, as well as LIVESTRONG (healthy living and fitness help) and Healthy Kids Day. Some locations have diabetes prevention programs, youth afterschool, preschool enrichment, aerobics and indoor track, cross training and more. To find a YMCA near to you, go online to www. ymca.net/militaryoutreach, scroll and click on “Find a Y Participating in the Military Outreach Initiative.” Put in your ZIP code and then select “Show only Ys participating in the Military Outreach Initiative.” (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
