“Women & Mental Blah Blah Blah” Honestly, I am not even certain of the context of the conversation, if there even was a context. All I know is that, as I was driving, I tuned in just in time to hear my youngest daughter say, “Women achieve mental blah blah blah more than men.” I am not certain how to take that. Really, I am not even certain as to the meaning of that choice bit of girlie wisdom. I do know that I did not argue the point; one is wise to simply ignore such an obvious field of land mines when he can. “Mental blah blah blah.” Is that really something that one “achieves?” Whatever the case, it is clear that, in my daughter’s mind, there is some difference between the minds or mental states of men and the fairer sex. And, whether she realizes it or not, she is fully correct in that assertion. Please, put down that piece of paper and pen and hold off just for a moment on that angry letter or snippy e-mail. I did not use the word “better,” I used the word “difference.” Can you imagine a world where men and women actually thought alike? Do we really need women using hammers as hammers, screwdrivers as hammers, can openers as hammers, and the backside of crescent wrenches as hammers? Would we really be keen on men going to the bathroom in groups of four? Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” God made two totally different humans with different anatomy, different emotions, and different ways of thinking and reacting. There is no right or wrong in the equation, there is no better or worse, there is
simply different. And, since God designed and pre-programmed the differences, those differences are precious and valuable. When it comes to the thinking of women, the fact that they often come at things from a different perspective than men often gives rise to the notion that they are somehow inferior. Anyone who thinks that, though, has never paid careful attention to the Bible. Miriam was a prophetess. Deborah was the political leader of the entire nation. Abigail was the calm and composed wife who saved her worthless husband’s neck. The Proverbs 31 woman was skilled in real estate. Esther was perhaps one of the shrewdest women who ever lived. Her careful management of a potentially apocalyptic situation literally prevented a holocaust. Ruth was determined, loyal, hard working, and knew the customs of a foreign land so well that she won favor with all who met her there. Priscilla helped her husband teach Apollos, who himself was one of the most brilliant men of his day. What does that say of her intellect? It was a wise woman who saved the city of Abel. It was a woman named Rahab who knew exactly what instructions and directions to give to save the lives of two Jewish men. And, perhaps my favorite of all, there is Claudia Procula, the wife of Pontius Pilate. When one preacher (Peter) was denying Jesus, and the other ten were hiding in fear, she provided the only voice speaking up to defend Jesus during His trial. I still have no idea what “mental blah blah blah” is. I do know beyond a doubt, though, that when the God of heaven made this great creature called woman, He did not make a dummy. He made a powerful psyche in pretty packaging. Nice job, Lord!
