Tractor Supply & Harbor Freight Inserts Inside! The benefits to buying local this holiday season Holiday shopping dominates many people’s free time between the day after Thanksgiving and the final days before Christmas. While many people may shop ‘til they drop on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, those days still account for a relatively small amount of the hundreds of billions of dollars that are spent each holiday season. Shoppers now have a bevy of options at their disposal as they embark on holiday shopping season. Traditional in-store retailers are still around, and online shopping continues to grow in popularity with each holiday season. But many holiday shoppers are looking to buy local this holiday season, and such a decision can pay a host of dividends for both shoppers and the communities they call home. • Buying local benefits your local economy. Studies from Civic Economics, an economics and strategics planning firm, found that independent, locally-owned retailers return a far greater percentage of their revenue into their local economies than national chain stores. One such study examined the disparity between revenue recirculation among independent, locally-owned businesses in Raleigh, North Carolina, versus four major national chains in the city. The former recirculated 51.1 percent of revenue into the local economy, while the latter recirculated less than 14 percent. Similar results were discovered in many cities, indicating that buying local not only benefits local business owners, but also the communities those owners and their customers call home. • Buying local creates jobs in your community. One of the biggest ways local business owners in Raleigh recirculated their revenue in the local economy was job creation. While national chains also create jobs, such jobs only benefit your community if the chains are located within your community. If your local mall is a considerable drive away, chances are the chains within that mall are not employing many of your fellow community members. Local businesses in your community are more likely to employ residents of your town. • Shopping local may provide access to more unique gifts. In addition to the economic benefits of buying local, shoppers may find merchandise made by local craftsmen is more unique than mass-produced items found on the shelves of national retailers. Recipients may cherish more unique items that they cannot find on their own, and that appreciation may even spur them to visit more local retailers after the holiday season has come and gone, benefiting their own communities in so doing. • Local business may provide a more personal touch. Buying from national chains has its advantages, but customer service is not always one of them. Should your loved ones encounter problems with their gift that requires assistance, they might be forced to wait on the phone for extended periods of time as they and thousands of others wait for customer service representatives to answer their calls. Local businesses do not deal with nearly the volume of customers as national retailers and, therefore, are capable of addressing concerns more quickly and personally than large chains. Buying local not only benefits small business owners, but it also pays dividends for their customers and the communities they call home.

Dear Santa, I lost my list of toys, so please just send me the stuff that you forgot from last year. Todd Dear Father Christmas, What should I leave for your reindeer to eat? Do they like cookies, too? My mom won’t let me bring hay into the living room. Your friend, Sandy Dear Santa, I need a new skateboard for Christmas. The one I got now crashes too much. Band-aids would be OK too. David Dear Santa, Would you rather I leave you cookies and milk or pizza? Dad says you’d probably like the pizza. Write back right away to let me know. Love, Lisa Dear Kris Kringle, Please give me a tank, a jet fighter, 20 green soldiers, and a bazooka gun. I’m planning a surprise attack on my brother. So don’t tell anyone. Thanks, Danny Dear Santa, How will you get into our house this year? We don’t have a chimney and my father just installed a very expensive security system. Julie

She was a devoted Big Sister, mentoring young girls in the Big Brothers and Sisters Program of Danville; a fund raiser for the American Heart Association, and founded SWAP (Saints With a Purpose), an organization designed to help Christians achieve the purpose they had been created for. She also loved reading, crossword puzzles and Sunday school. While housework was not her “thing”, she was known for her Hummingbird cakes, and would always indulge her nieces and nephew anytime they asked with a cake and a pot of chittilin’s. In addition to her commitment to a multitude of community service organizations, she was actively involved in her home church, White Rock Missionary Baptist Church of Mountain Hill. She served over the years in multiple capacities, including Sunday school teacher, usher, and missionary board member and president, and always volunteered to transport both children and the elderly to church. During her 4 years of failing health, she never forgot to be grateful and was always saying “thank you” to whoever helped her with anything. Even on her sick bed she could be heard glorifying Jesus and proclaiming how great He is and ministering to the nursing home staff. Always the traveler and adventurer, on Wednesday evening, November 25th 2015 Margaret heard the voice of her Heavenly Father inviting her to come and go with Him to His house. She accepted the in-

BreakDown: Chasing Natty Greene’s Source: Bruce Hedrick, SouthsideCentral.com “SouthsideCentral is a fusion of news and opinion.” Landing a brewpub in Danville isn’t easy. Landing a big business brewpub in Danville isn’t easy, and it isn’t cheap. Let’s do a BreakDown and tell you what’s going on. One of the biggest secrets that really isn’t a secret is that Danville is a finalist city in getting a Natty Greene’s brewpub/restaurant/tourist attraction to come to the River District. The city’s economic development team and other stakeholders have been working hard to make the deals needed to put a big investment into the city and by big, I mean $15 million and 150 jobs worth of big. This week, the Tobacco Commission approved a $500,000 grant for the project as an incentive if Danville is the final choice. But wait, there’s more! Let’s take a look at some other parts of the deal that’s being made to get Natty Greene’s to Danville. We’ll need a Big Board for that, so here it comes!
On December 4th, 2015, the Danville Braves presented a check to the Veterans Memorial Fund with The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region. The $2,051.25 donation represents proceeds from the Braves’ Military Appreciation Night and the sale of the team’s military-themed jerseys. Pictured above, L to R: David Cross, General Manager at the Danville Braves; Debra Dodson, Executive Director at the Community Foundation; Lawrence McFall, Veterans Memorial Representative.
The top line on the big board is the $500,000 Tobacco Commission grant. Before the Usual Suspects howl at that, things have changed since the Job Bust days. The company wouldn’t get all of this money at once, and it would be tied to performance agreement. And Natty Greene’s is good for $500,000 in case the world ended next year, so this is a safe use of Danville’s Tobacco Commission allocation for the year. The company would invest $7,000,000 into equipment and the building construction cost would be $8,000,000. The financing for the building construction would be backed by Danville’s Industrial Development Authority on a bank loan, and the company would take a 25-year lease-purchase agreement on the building. Natty Greene’s would be responsible for paying all property and equipment taxes during the lease, just as if they owned the building outright. The building would be around 50,000 square feet for foodservice & brewing beer and have a hospitality area for the public. That means a restaurant and probably a banquet area. This business would be a tourist draw that would average 3000 people per week (local and outside the area). That’s a lot of money that comes into the local economy as visitors to the business are likely to do other things while in Danville. Here’s how the money breaks down. The property by the river is worth $1,000,000. The City of Danville would put in $2,000,000 from their Industrial Enhancement grant program (Don’t howl over that, either. That’s $200,000 each year for 10 years… not all at once.) The business would get a grant from the Commonwealth Opportunity Fund. That used to be called the Governor’s Opportunity Fund. There’s no word on how much that grant would be yet. Finally, the Danville Regional foundation is willing to offer up $2,000,000 in gap financing if needed during the construction and operation startup. Let’s make this clear now… that’s NOT a Danville Regional Foundation grant for $2,000,000. It’s more like a open-end loan that would help on expenses that come up more quickly than cash on hand could handle. The Danville Regional Foundation would treat it as an investment and make money on the interest that the company would pay on the loan balance. That’s a BreakDown on what is happening in the contest to land Natty Greene into Danville’s River District. The only place to find in-depth looks at topics like this is here at SouthsideCentral, and I’m glad that you’re here reading. Thanks!

LeeAnne Naff will be speaking on a topic that effects our youth today. These events are FREE and open to all denominational youth and youth groups The American Legion Post 47 monthly meeting will be Dec. 10, 2015, 6:00 p.m. at the Pittsylvania Historical Center (formerly the Chatham Railroad Station). December 7th will be the 74th anniversary of “The day that will live in infamy.” In honor of the veterans that sacrificed their lives on that fateful day, a special program on Pearl Harbor will be presented by Wallace Bryant, USAF Cold War Veteran. While at Duke University, Wallace did extensive research on the attack of Pearl Harbor. He explored many facets of that day which raised many questions in his mind such as was it actually a surprise attack or should the US have known about it in advance. He also explored the many mistakes the United States Government may have made before the actual attack and is it possible that an attack similar to Pearl Harbor could occur again. Please join us for an informative evening. For more information, please contact Commander Johnny Rice at (434) 334-8361. The Danville Cancer’s COPING Cancer Support Group will hold their annual Christmas Luncheon on Tuesday, December 15th at 1:00PM. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 409 Arnett Blvd., Danville, VA. Is there a veteran-owned small business in your New Year? If you’ve thought about owning a business, where you open it might have something to do with your ease of working with the local authorities. Thumbtack, a survey organization, recently completed its annual Small Business Friendliness survey, in which it asked 18,000 small-business owners to rate their cities and states in more than a dozen categories, including ease of hiring, licensing and tax regulations. Among those responding were 1,794 veterans who own small businesses. Here, in order, are the top 10 cities friendliest cities for small businesses: Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth, Texas; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Atlanta; San Antonio; Houston; Washington, D.C.; Phoenix; and Raleigh, North Carolina. Veterans own 9 percent of businesses, according to the Small Business Administration, and we’re 45 percent more likely to become entrepreneurs than civilians. Here are the things veterans wanted most in trying to set up a small business ... things
that help identify a city as business-friendly: * Training and networking opportunities in translating military skills into civilian ones. * Government websites full of local information and resources, * Friendly licensing rules. In the survey, the top careers for veterans were event DJ, personal trainer, handyman and computerrepair specialist. In the overall (including civilian) population, 42 percent of private investigators were veterans. If a small business might be in your future, start gathering information now. Go online to the Small Business Administration website [www.sba.gov] and review the files on writing a business plan, estimating startup costs, hiring employees, finding a business mentor and much more. Especially see the links to Veterans Business Outreach Centers and Office of Veterans Business Development. If you want to read the whole survey, go online to www.thumbtack.com/ blog/veterans. It’s that time of year again…
Every year about this time I like to remind everyone to start a Christmas Club for next year. A lot of financial institutions no longer offer Christmas Clubs but we do. Saving a little bit of money every pay period can certainly help out with your holiday shopping. You can also add money to it at any time throughout the year. I like to advice people that if they are getting a large tax return to take part of that tax return and put it into a club account. Another option might be to save your loose change throughout the year (Remember we have that great change counter!) and add that to your Christmas Club. Remember this is a Christmas Club account and it should not be accessed for any other reason. Having the funds from your club account will certainly help make the holiday shopping experience a less stressful experience for you.

The holiday season allows people to transform their homes into wonderlands of lights, garlands and poinsettias. Each family has its own holiday traditions, and decorations are a part of many of those traditions. Decorations might be awe-inspiring, but those that include lights often lead to substantially higher energy bills. Fortunately, there are ways for homeowners, whether they prefer subtle displays or more over-the-top arrangements, to save money and still celebrate the holiday season in style. • Switch to more efficient lights. A great way to ensure holiday displays consume less energy is to change the bulbs being strung. Incandescent lights can use 80 to 90 percent more energy than LED lights. Gradually replace older light strands with newer, energy-efficient LEDs. Not only do LEDs require less energy, but they also can last longer than incandescent bulbs, meaning you won’t have to replace them as frequently as more traditional bulbs. Furthermore, lower wattage usage means you can attach more strands of lights together safely. • Use timers. Timers can be set to turn lights on and off at specific times, ensuring lights aren’t turning on during the daytime or being left on into the night by forgetful homeowners. Timers also are a good safety precaution. A dark house that is normally lit up can advertise to thieves that no one is home. When lights turn on with a timer, it will create the illusion that it is business as usual in your residence. • Use homemade decorations. You also can save energy and money by recycling materials into holiday décor. Trim branches from trees and use them in vases for an instant wintry look. Prune an evergreen on your property and make your own wreath with some wire and twine. Shop yard sales for gently used decorations that still have years of utility left. Sew ornaments from scraps of fabric or clothing that no longer fits. Each of these ideas reduces reliance on manufactured decorations that consume energy during production and fuel while being transported from factories to store shelves. • Rely on extension cords. You can extend the length of displays without using more lights by spacing out light strands with extension cords. Intersperse spotlights to add attention to key elements of your display as well. • Turn off interior lights. If a Christmas tree is illuminating a front window, turn off the lights in your home, as the tree may provide enough light to make a living room or den extra cozy.

1. Lorne Green, of Ponderosa fame, had a No. 1 hit record. What was it? 2. Who were The Hondells, The Sunsets, The Four Speeds, The Competitors, The Kickstands and The Ghouls? 3. Name the band that released “Long Train Runnin’.” 4. In which song is the singer getting fed macaroons? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Last night I held Aladdin’s lamp, So I wished that I could stay, Before the thing could answer me, Well, someone came and took the lamp away.” Answers 1. “Ringo,” in 1964. The mostly spoken song told the story of the gunfighter Ringo. The record climbed the charts, although the historical facts were wrong. 2. They were fake bands, anonymous studio musicians brought together to cut records. The members were interchangeable. 3. The Doobie Brothers, in 1973. Sometimes “Without Love” is included in the title as the words are heard repeatedly in the song. 4. “Sweet City Woman,” by The Stampeders, in 1971. 5. “Magic Carpet Ride,” by Steppenwolf in 1968. Fans were surprised by the differences in the single and album versions of the song. The single was 2:55 while the album version was 4:25. Even the vocals and instrumentals weren’t the same. * When the holidays come around, we use fresh herbs to make several family recipes, but end up with lots left over. Here is a great tip I found online to stretch the usefulness of fresh herbs: “Store fresh herbs as you would fresh flowers: in a jar of water on your countertop. Pluck off what you need, change the water daily, and they’ll last two to three times longer than they would in the fridge (from nourishedkitchen.com).” * Empty spice containers can be used to hold different hardware in the shop or in your toolbox. * “My great-nephew and his family came to visit, and his toddler son is quite into opening doors. I had baby-proofed my breakables and such, but I did not think about his being able to turn a doorknob. His very smart mother pulled out a sock and slipped it over the doorknob, then secured it with a wide rubber band. Even I was unable to get a good grip on the doorknob after that!” -- V.R. in North Carolina
* Surprise guests? Here’s how to quick clean your living areas: First, clean the toilet, mirror and vanity in the guest bathroom and leave a fresh towel; grab a laundry basket and remove any clutter from the living room and kitchen; put away or clean dirty dishes and wipe down counters in the kitchen; finally, give carpets a quick vacuum. Then maybe light a greatsmelling candle and greet your guests! * “Fireplaces are wonderful for heat and ambience, but the ashes! When cleaning up, I spritz the ashes with a rosemary water solution. This keeps them from dusting up and flying all over, and it smells great. My neighbor puts her damp loose-leaf tea in the fireplace for scent as well.” -- C.W. in Iowa Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Buttermilk Blueberry Breakfast Cake Ingredients ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature 2 tsp. lemon zest or more — zest from 1 large lemon 7/8 cup* + 1 tablespoon sugar** 1 egg, room temperature 1 tsp. vanilla 2 cups flour (set aside 1/4 cup of this to toss with the blueberries) 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. kosher salt 2 cups fresh blueberries ½ cup buttermilk*** * 7/8 cup = 3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons ** This 1 tablespoon is for sprinkling on top *** To make homemade buttermilk, place 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice in a liquid measuring cup. Fill cup with milk until it reaches the 1-cup line. Let stand for five minutes. Use only 1/2 cup of the prepared mixture for the recipe. Instructions Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Cream butter with lemon zest and 7/8 cup of the sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until combined. Meanwhile, toss the blueberries with ¼ cup of flour, then whisk together the remaining flour, baking powder and salt. Add the flour mixture to the batter a little at a time, alternating with the buttermilk. Fold in the blueberries. Grease a 9-inch square baking pan (or something similar) with butter or coat with nonstick spray. Spread batter into pan. Sprinkle batter with remaining tablespoon of sugar. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes. Check with a toothpick for doneness. If necessary, return pan to oven for a couple of more minutes. (Note: Baking for as long as 10 minutes more might be necessary.) Let cool at least 15 minutes before serving.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Pan” (PG) -- The beloved boy who flies about and never grows up gets an extra-helping of CG in this live-action origin story. Peter starts as a magical orphan, kidnapped by the evil pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) and taken to Neverland, where pirate ships fly and greenscreens cover everything. Peter’s parents were special in some way, so he’s supposed to lead the Natives (including Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily) in an all-out revolution against the sky pirates. Our young hero also befriends James Hook (Garrett Hedlund), a dashing young oaf with a horrendous accent. It just doesn’t fly right. All of the backstory, worldbuilding and by-thenumbers journey get in the way of actual wonder and adventure. Like, did you know pixie dust is called pixum and it’s a valued commodity in the Neverland economy? Yeah. The pirate-fighting, neveraging boy-adventurer was already good enough for audiences to enjoy, but here he’s too weighed down to fly.
“Queen of Earth” (R) -For Catherine (Elizabeth Moss), a trip to her best friend’s country retreat was supposed to be a welcome reprieve from her spiral of mental anguish. She’s still reeling from her father’s suicide, and her boyfriend just dumped her in the meanest way possible. Her friend, Virginia (Katherine Waterston), is more abrasive than supportive; she knows her friend and how to hurt her. Catherine’s mental breakdown plays out like a slow-motion trainwreck, speckled with bits of ultradark humor. Moss’ talent is undeniable, and director Alex Ross Perry gives her the lens she needs to focus it.
“Dragon Blade” (R) -In this super-budgeted Chinese historical epic, Roman conquerors square off with Han-Dynasty heroes in a crucial clash of blade, bone and bronze. The Silk Road is a vital trade route linking the empires of the East and West. Roman general Lucius (John Cusack, looking tired per usual) teams up with Chinese “Pawn Sacrifice” (PGleader Huo An (Jackie 13) -- In the 1970s, Chan, still kicking butt) to American Bobby Fischer stave off the murderous presented a threat to Tiberius (Adrien Brody, Russia’s dominance of really hamming it up international chess. As a lover of Cold War got colder, the history and martial arts world looked to Iceland and all three of those and a series of matches leads, I really wanted this between Fischer (Tobey movie to live up to its Maguire) and Russian epic ambitions, but like champion Boris Spassky so many other sweeping (Liev Schrieber). Rather sword-stories, it gets lost high-strung and wracked somewhere along the road. with inner demons, Fischer became a largerTV RELEASES than-life figure as his “The Wiz Live!” mental state fluctuates “Defiance: Season 3” under the weight of several “The Nanny: Season 5” mega-tons of international “Dominion: Season 2” pressure. “Jacques Pepin: Heart & Maguire gives a solid Soul” performance, even though his real-life inspiration is (c) 2015 King Features boiled down to a “tortured Synd., Inc.
