Early Detection Saves Lives Cancer. It is a word that scares everyone. At the Cancer Research and Resource Center of Southern Virginia/Danville, one of our long term initiatives is Early Detection Saves Lives. This initiative is in accordance with the Virginia Cancer Plan 2013-2017 goal of Early Detection: that Virginians will be diagnosed with cancer at its earliest, most curable stage. Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death (after heart disease) in the United States, but it is number 1 in Virginia. Why, and what can we do to change that? The top four cancers in our area – the Central Region of Southern Virginia (excluding non-melanoma skin cancers) with mortality/death rates higher than the rest of Virginia are female breast, prostate, colorectal and lung (for males), (Virginia Department of Health/1996-2013). This is shocking and it is, in part, because people too often wait until they are sick to see a doctor. According to the National Cancer Institute (SEER), recommended screenings that lead to catching the cancer early, before it has spread, result in a 5-year survival rate: - for breast of 98.6% - prostate, 100% - colorectal, 90% - for lung, which has had a screening test in place for the last year, the cure rate is about 55% Screenings for these four cancers are covered 100% by most insurance plans and Medicare. For individuals at average risk, meaning no family or personal history related to the cancer, the recommended age to begin screening: - Colorectal cancer is 50. There are different types of screening, but the ‘gold standard’ is the colonoscopy. If no cancer or precancerous polyp is found on colonoscopy, the next screening is in ten years. And, again, ten years later. - VCU Massey Cancer Center recommends women start mammograms to screen for breast cancer at age 40. - Men should discuss prostate screening with their doctor starting at age 50. However, African American men and those with a family history are at higher risk. Discuss this with your health care provider. - Lung cancer guidelines are more complicated and should be discussed with your doctor. Even if you are not a smoker, you need to consider the effects of second hand smoke and family history. Screening by a low-dose CT scan is scheduled for people as young as 55. Family medical history is extremely important in determining when you should start specific screenings. For example, if you are a female in your late 20’s whose mother, aunt and grandmother had breast cancer, your doctor needs to know this information. Because of your family history, it may be suggested you start having a yearly mammogram now. Be proactive about your healthcare and provide your health provider with all your family health history to make the proper decisions regarding your health care and screenings. So, if these cancers can be stopped in their tracks, why are so many people dying from them? There are many reasons. People wait until they feel sick to see a health provider. By the time you are exhibiting symptoms, the cancer may have spread and more difficult to cure. We hear so many people say “I feel fine, why should I get screened?” The point of screening is to catch the cancer in its earliest stage, when there are no signs or

EMAIL Letters To Santa; Part 3 Dear Santa, Mommy says that you only bring presents for the good little boys. That isn’t fair. Brian Dear Santa, How old are you? How did you meet Mrs. Claus? Is your first name really Santa? Can I be an elf next year? Who is your favorite kid? How do you fit all those toys in your sleigh? I have more questions for later. Your pal, Pauline Dear St. Nick, My mother told me to write to you and say thanks for the train set. My dad plays with it all the time. Mike Dear Santa, I would like just one of everything in the toy section of the Christmas Catalog. Thank you. Nancy Dear Santa, May I ride a reindeer, specifically Roudolph? Thanks, Kaitlynn

Continued from front article... symptoms of a problem, so it can be more easily cured. There are barriers to screening. People say “mammograms hurt” and “I don’t want something inserted in my colon.” We are so fortunate to have screenings available for those top four cancers. Think of them as wearing a seat belt. Something so simple can save your life. Think of your family. They need you. Getting proper screenings can help you to be there for them for a long time. It’s time to get over your barriers and fears and get screened. It can save your life. There is another group of cancers that have been linked to a virus that can be prevented through vaccination. They are HPV/related cancers. HPV is a virus called human papillomavirus. The Centers for Disease Control says that around 80% of adults are infected with HPV, but don’t know it and some strains of the virus can evolve from an infection to a disease, including, at times, cancer. We had a speaker a few months ago, Dr. Iain Morgan, Director of the Philips Institute for Oral Health Research in Richmond and a researcher specializing in HPV and its related cancers, who called HPV “An epidemic in our country.” The cases of HPV related cancers are rising at a truly alarming rate. Someone can contract the virus at a young age and the cancer will show up 20 years later. The CDC reports that cervical cancer is linked to HPV 90% of the time. It is also linked to other types of cancer in both men and women, such as head and neck cancer and, cancers of the reproductive organs. Many of the most harmful strains of HPV are preventable with a vaccine when children are vaccinated before exposure to the virus. The CDC, as well as our own Virginia Department of Health, recommends that all boys and girls get the 3-dose vaccine beginning at age 11. Please share this information and save our children and grandchildren’s lives. Should you have questions or want more information about cancer screenings, family medical history, the HPV vaccination or any other cancer related topic, please contact us. The Cancer Research and Resource Center of Southern Virginia/ Danville offers all our services, programs and educational materials for free. Call 434-421-3060 or email cllitzenberg@vcu.edu. We are located at Kennedy Hall, 103 S. Main Street. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, 10:00am-4:00pm and Friday 10:00am-2:00pm, or by appointment. The Center is funded by VCU Massey Cancer Center and the Tobacco Regional Revitalization Commission.

Ban on Christmas trees lifted BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper Having served in the military, I was appalled when reading an email last week that our federal government had implemented a ban on Christmas trees at the VA hospital in Salem, Va. When the holiday season began this year, VA workers received an email announcing that traditional Christmas trees would no longer be allowed in public spaces at the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The email went on to read that trees (regardless of the types of ornaments used) have been labeled to promote Christian religion and will not be allowed in any public areas this year. While the federal government was citing a directive for its definition of Christmas, I for one would rather cite the holy Bible and its definition that declares that Jesus is the Reason for the Season and not something that shines and dangles from a Christmas tree. While the Department of Veterans Affairs has banned employees at its Salem facility from saying “Merry Christmas to Veterans,” each year in Washington a White House Christmas Tree and a Capital Christmas Tree grace those two government buildings along with a National Christmas Tree that is placed outdoors for the public to enjoy over the holiday season. The Obama Administration was bombarded with pressure over the ban, and then, and only then, did they lift the ban on the placement of Christmas trees at Salem. But hold on, that’s not the end to this story. The email goes on to say that private religious expressions can only be uttered in “personal work areas,” meaning I suppose that an employee at the VA could be punished for wishing “Merry Christmas” to a veteran. And listen to this. While the Christmas tree ban was lifted, the directive lashed out and barred Christmas music, saying any music related to Christmas must be non-religious. In other words, you can sing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” but you can’t sing about Baby Jesus. I never dreamed that a Christmas tree endorsed any religion. And never would I have dreamed that patting a veteran on the back and wishing him a “Merry Christmas” was inappropriate for the holiday season. This is the time of the year when the federal government should be doing everything it can to honor those who have served their country and not dishonor them for their service. The government, by Federal Law, recognizes Christmas as an official federal holiday and federal employees have a paid day off to celebrate the Christian belief in the Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ, and he who questions that challenges the almightiness of God. What started out as a ban on Christmas trees has created uproar on just what and why we celebrate this special time of the year. Threatening penalties for those who offer religious greetings in the workplace should not be in the hands of a governing body. Many of us adorn our homes with Christmas trees, with or without subscribing to any Christian religious beliefs, and that’s the Christmas I know. Sounds like somebody’s been drinking too much eggnog or smoking too much mistletoe.

Ruth Gillie Strader
Ruth Gillie Strader, faithful and loving mother, grandmother, aunt, a n d friend w a s called h o m e to be with our Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 12, 2015. She has resided at Roman Eagle Nursing & Rehab Center since 2007 due to failing health. She was born on November 12, 1912, a daughter to the late Bethel Billie Gillie and Betty Ann Harville Gillie. She and her eleven siblings, all deceased, grew up in the Happy Home Community in Ruffin, N.C. She and Henry Clay Strader were married and had two sons, Henry Eugene and James Cleo. After her husband’s untimely death she married William Thomas Strader in 1938 and had two sons, William Thomas and Walter Wayne. Even though her last name remained “Strader” her two husbands were not related. Ruth bragged on William by the way he always treated “all four of his boys” the same. Ruth, lovingly referred to as “Granny,” was a dedicated member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church for over fifty years where she attended faithfully until moving to Roman Eagle. She will be fondly remembered by many for her beautiful roses, food frozen from the garden, damson preserves and the many family meals
she lovingly prepared including her famous banana pudding, potato salad, turnip greens, and various pies including egg custard. One could seldom visit her home without first sharing one of her homemade dishes. Granny grew up during the Great Depression and believed in hard work. Quitting was never part of her vocabulary. While her children were young she was a devoted homemaker. She later worked at Capitol Coveralls, John Bill and Masons Department Store. In later years her favorite pastime was visiting with her family and friends. She is survived by her son, William “Tommy” (Sharon), nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, very special and loving daughter-in-laws: Frances Clark (Jimmy), Gay Strader, Alice Strader and Doris Strader, special nieces and nephews: Doug Gillie (Louise), Dillard Gillie, Danny Strader (Stella), Thomas Strader (Debbie), and Brenda Strader Conrad, and a special great-nephew, Jimmy Gillie (Cindy). The family would like to extend appreciation to the nursing staff of Roman Eagle for their loving and dedicated care through the years. We also express gratitude to Averett Witcher, and his wife Anne for their love and loyal friendship. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at 2 p.m. from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Reverend Carl Burger and Reverend Averett Witcher. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, December 14, 2015, from 7-8:30 p.m. And at other times they will be at the residence of her son, William Thomas Strader, & wife of Ringgold, VA. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church, 125 Starling Avenue, Danville, VA. 24540. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is respectfully serving the Strader family.

This wouldn’t be noteworthy, of course, except for the fact that he was assassinated at the motel that same evening. * Those who study such things say that men without beards are 40 percent more likely to describe themselves as happy. * In November of this year, a bulldog named Otto set a Guinness World Record. * You probably won’t be surprised to learn that before horseradish was called horseradish, it was known as “stingnose” in many areas of the United States. However, you might be surprised to learn that it was sometimes rubbed on a person’s forehead to relieve a headache. * Lawmakers in Kentucky evidently once thought it necessary to pass legislation making it illegal to paint one’s lawn red. * You might not think of tarantulas as fragile, but they are. Despite their soft, furry appearance, if one of these spiders has even a short fall without catching itself on its thread, the drop likely will shatter its exoskeleton or rupture its abdomen. * If you ever have the good fortune to encounter a group of bunnies, you’ll know that you can collectively call them a “fluffle.” *** Thought for the Day: “If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I have known will go to heaven, and very, very few persons.” -- James Thurber (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

What is Christmas? It is not about Black Friday or Cyber Monday. It is not about presents, toys or getting the best gadgets. It is not about decorations, parties, or alcohol. It is not about Santa Claus, Rudolph or Frosty.
It is all about Jesus! Luke 2:10-11; And the angel said unto them, Fear not, for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Philippians 2:9-11; Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven or in earth and under the earth, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Save energy with holiday decorations The holiday season allows people to transform their homes into wonderlands of lights, garlands and poinsettias. Each family has its own holiday traditions, and decorations are a part of many of those traditions. Decorations might be awe-inspiring, but those that include lights often lead to substantially higher energy bills. Fortunately, there are ways for homeowners, whether they prefer subtle displays or more over-the-top arrangements, to save money and still celebrate the holiday season in style. • Switch to more efficient lights. A great way to ensure holiday displays consume less energy is to change the bulbs being strung. Incandescent lights can use 80 to 90 percent more energy than LED lights. Gradually replace older light strands with newer, energy-efficient LEDs. Not only do LEDs require less energy, but they also can last longer than incandescent bulbs, meaning you won’t have to replace them as frequently as more traditional bulbs. Furthermore, lower wattage usage means you can attach more strands of lights together safely. • Use timers. Timers can be set to turn lights on and off at specific times, ensuring lights aren’t turning on during the daytime or being left on into the night by forgetful homeowners. Timers also are a good safety precaution. A dark house that is normally lit up can advertise to thieves that no one is home. When lights turn on with a timer, it will create the illusion that it is business as usual in your residence. • Use homemade decorations. You also can save energy and money by recycling materials into holiday décor. Trim branches from trees and use them in vases for an instant wintry look. Prune an evergreen on your property and make your own wreath with some wire and twine. Shop yard sales for gently used decorations that still have years of utility left. Sew ornaments from scraps of fabric or clothing that no longer fits. Each of these ideas reduces reliance on manufactured decorations that consume energy during production and fuel while being transported from factories to store shelves. • Rely on extension cords. You can extend the length of displays without using more lights by spacing out light strands with extension cords. Intersperse spotlights to add attention to key elements of your display as well. • Turn off interior lights. If a Christmas tree is illuminating a front window, turn off the lights in your home, as the tree may provide enough light to make a living room or den extra cozy.

Chicken Pot Pie Casserole INGREDIENTS 1 lb Chicken Breast 12 oz Frozen Peas and Carrots, thawed 2 cup Frozen Diced Potatoes, thawed (like Hash Browns or Potatoes OBrien) 1 Onion diced 2 can Cream of Chicken Condensed Soup 1 cup Water 2 cans Refrigerated Crescent Rolls. 1/2 tsp Poultry Seasoning Salt and Pepper to taste. DIRECTIONS Grill chicken breasts until cooked through. Allow to cool. Grill diced onions until transparent. Set aside. Dice chicken into 1/2″ cubes. Preheat oven to 350. Grease a 11×13″ baking dish. Unroll 1 can of crescent rolls and pinch perforations to seal into a sheet. Press into bottom and up sides of prepared disk. Don’t worry if sides do not go all the way up. Bake for 20 minutes or until crust is light brown. Allow to cool. In a large skillet, combine chicken cubes, diced onion, water, potatoes and peas and carrots. Stir and cook over medium heat until ingredients are warm (5-10 minutes). Add soup and poultry seasoning and continue heating for another 5 minutes. If sauce looks too thick, slowly add a little more water until desired consistency is reached. Pour chicken mixture over baked crust and spread evenly. Unroll other can of crescent rolls and pinch perforations to seal into a sheet. Place over top of chicken mixture and press into sides of dish. Bake for 25 minutes or until top is golden brown.

Maine aims to reduce the number of homeless veterans in the state to zero. A project to build 21 cabins in the Maine woods for homeless veterans got another push forward recently when state lawmakers approved nearly $400,000 in federal tax credits. The project, called Cabin in the Woods, is being spearheaded by Volunteers of America and is pulling in support from all corners. The one- and twobedroom cabins will be built on an 11-acre wooded section of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center-Togus property under a 75-year lease. The fully furnished ADA-approved cabins will be for both men and women, and the site would include a community center. In April, to satisfy the concerns of the state’s Bureau of Veteran Services, the Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development committee approved a bill that would guarantee that the government would provide services to those veterans living in
the cabins. Additionally, the VofA would have an agreement with each veteran to help with benefits and services. It’s estimated that the project will cost $4 million, with money coming from the state, federal grants and private donors. More details need to be ironed out before the full slate of supporters will come on board, but they will come, including one large national hardware and lumber company that will fund construction. For homeless veterans, many of whom deal with PTSD and substance abuse, a cabin in the quiet Maine woods, with medical assistance and support services nearby, might well be the perfect vehicle for healing and eventual wellness. The Volunteers of America have a hand in multiple services for homeless veterans. They understand that without a safe and stable place to live, other steps forward, such as physical and mental wellness, employment and education, just aren’t possible.
