The Christmas Hobby Horse A grandfather bought a hobby horse by mail order as a Christmas present for his granddaughter. A lady lost her handbag in the bustle of Christmas shopping. It was found by an honest little boy and returned to her. Looking in her purse, she commented, "Hmmm.... That's funny. When I lost my bag there was a $20 bill in it. Now there are twenty $1 bills." The boy quickly replied, "That's right, lady. The last time I found a lady's purse, she didn't have any change for a reward."
The toy arrived in 189 pieces. The instructions said that it could be put together in an hour. However it took the old man two days to assemble the toy. Finally, when it was all put together, he wrote a check, cut it into 189 pieces and mailed it off to the company.

Memorial Hospital Partners with Duke Medicine to Provide High Tech Stroke Care Throughout the Region
Patients now have greater access to around the clock emergency stroke care Martinsville, Va. , December 13, 2013 – Officials at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County (MHMHC) today announced a new partnership with the Duke TeleStroke Network to provide advanced technology “telestroke” services throughout the region. Area residents now have around the clock access to Duke Medicine’s nationally recognized team of neurologists/ stroke experts via real-time, telemedicine based technology. According to the American Stroke Association nearly 90% of strokes occurring in the U.S. are ischemic in nature – caused by an obstruction (blood clot) within a vessel supplying blood to the brain. A drug known as tPA (tissue pasminogen activator) has been proven to effectively treat ischemic strokes by dissolving the blood clot and restoring blood flow to the brain. Patients who may be candidates for receiving tPA must receive the drug within three hours of onset of stroke symptoms which makes its extremely important that an individual showing signs and symptoms of a stroke be taken to the nearest hospital emergency room as soon as possible. With Memorial Hospital’s new telestroke program, neurology specialists at Duke will use advanced technology videoconferencing to communicate with Memorial Hospital’s emergency room team, examine the patient, review imaging reports, confirm a diagnosis, and then provide recommendations for treatment just as if they were at the bedside. The new technology also includes use of a five foot – life sized robot the employees have named “Lightening McBot”, which will assist in providing a thorough examination with the most immediate and best treatment plan for the patient being determined, including possible tPA. “For someone having a stroke, minutes can make the difference between life and death,” said Skip Philips, Chief Executive Officer at Memorial Hospital. “We are very proud of the stroke program we have at Memorial and look forward to having the expertise of a world class leader like Duke made available to our patients and our community. ” “Research has shown that quick access to a neurologist or stroke expert greatly reduces death and the long-term disabling effects of a stroke,” said Dr. Henry Bridges, Chief Medical Officer at Memorial Hospital. “Our new telestroke program is making it possible for us to deliver care in ways never before imagined – giving our patients the care they need close to home.” The community is invited to attend a reception celebrating the arrival of “Lightening McBot” and the Duke Telestroke Network to the region. Deadline nears for using approved containers for garbage collection
 The city of Danville reminds residents that after Jan. 1 all residential properties must use only approved garbage containers. The containers must be wheeled carts with attached lids that can be emptied by the mechanical lifts on the city’s garbage collection trucks. melba & stoneman Currently, the Public Works Department is selling these hodnett carts to the public, but citizens may purchase carts from retail stores. The carts come in three sizes: 35 gallons, 64 gallons and 96 gallons. The city sells the carts at cost. “We will begin enforcement by giving out courtesy notices to those residents who do not use an automated cart,” said Rick Drazenovich, director of public works. “After several reminders, we will discontinue trash collection until a cart is used. In severe cases where garbage may build up, we will follow the code enforcement process that begins with a notice and ends with the city collecting the trash and billing the property owner for the collection plus administrative fees.” Public Works began selling used carts on Jan. 3, 2012, and new carts on May 10, 2013. To date, the department has sold 4,600 used carts and 3,430 new carts. The 8,030 carts sold represent 48 percent of the 16,700 residential units in Danville. “Of course, we do not know how many have been purchased from local vendors,” Drazenovich said. Public Works currently has 4,770 carts to sell. Used carts are not available at this time. Residents have four payment options:  1. Prepay by cash, check, or credit card by visiting the Public Works Office, which is located at 998 South Boston Road. 2. Prepay by credit card by calling the office at (434) 799-5245. 3. Mail in payment by check or money order. 4. Request to be billed in two or four payments. The billing option is not part of a resident’s monthly utility bill. Application must be completed in person at the Public Works Office. Late fees apply. Public Works will deliver the carts to the residential unit free of charge. Danville City Council voted earlier this year to switch to the new garbage collection system effective Jan. 1, 2014. “These carts provide the cleanest, most sanitary method of garbage collection,” Drazenovich told council members. Drazenovich said the change also would maximize the efficiency of the garbage collection operation by saving on time and labor needed. The department would consolidate routes, eliminating one garbage collection crew. On Aug. 1, 2011, the city discontinued backyard collection and began curbside-only solid waste collection for residents. Today, all city routes are being collected by side-loading trucks that can mechanically lift and empty attached-lid, wheeled carts. 
On Friday evening, December 13, the Diamond Fever Softball Organization held their annual Christmas party at Ringgold Baptist Church in Ringgold, VA. They completed service projects that created 40 gift boxes full of treats for the residents of Harmony Hall in Bassett, Virginia and 16 children's bags for God's Pit Crew in Danville, VA. The Diamond Fever program supports approximately 50 girls, from 10U to 18U teams, from Southside Virginia, including Danville, Pittsylvania County, Henry County, Halifax County and Franklin County. Ethel Marshall Kirks, 88, of Callands, VA died December 10, 2013 at her residence. She was born October 31, 1925 in Patrick County, VA to the late Lettie Pruitt Marshall and the late Sherman Marshall. Her husband of 46 years, Luther Allen Kirks, preceded her in death on May 16, 1990. She was a homemaker and also worked the farm with her husband. Mrs. Kirks was a member of County Line Christian Church and also attended Swansonville United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter Phyllis K. Crabb and husband, Jerry, of Durham, NC; her son Donald R. Kirks and wife, Brenda, of Callands; her daughter-in-law, Faye Kirks of Dry Fork, VA; her sisters Atrice Thompson and Gertrude Montgomery, both of Patrick County, and Sylvia Harold of Mt. Airy, NC; her brothers John Henry Marshall of Danville and Bob Quesinberry of Clemmons, NC; her grandchildren Christopher Glenn Kirks, Julie Kirks Smith and husband, Carl, and Donnie Alan Kirks; her step-granddaughter Paige Crabb Atkinson; her greatgrandchildren Matthew Gilbert and Daniel Smith; and her step-great-grandchildren Connor Smith, J.C. She was born September 19, 1920 in Pitts County to the late Percy Granville and Mary Lovelace Echols. She was married to the late Lorenzo Russell. She was a member of White Rock Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, was a member of the choir, the Senior Missionary Circle, the Willing Workers Club and Usher Board. She also served as the church secretary for forty-eight years. She was retired after forty-eight years from Dibbrel Brothers Tobacco Company. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her son, Frederick Douglas Russell and her daughter, Connie Russell-Cobb. She is survived by her sister, Lizzie Holmes, her grandchildren, Rosalind Scott and Kristi RussellShaw, her great-grandchildren, Alexandria Russell, Carlissia Coleman and Isaiah Scott and her greatgreat-grandchildren, Erion Boyd, Ahmad Taylor and Aubrey Taylor. She was born on December 16, 1942, in Berwick, PA, to the late Paul C. Shultz and Madge Andreas Shultz. Mary was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband: Dale E. Wolfe, of the home; daughters: Lori W. Poland and her husband Glen, of Martinsville, VA and Lisa Wolfe, of Danville, VA; son James E. “Jim” Wolfe and his wife Katherine, of Nortonville, Kansas;

Nancy M. Burnette, 71, of Danville, VA died Wednesday, December 11, 2013 after a decline in health for the several years. Born in Danville, VA on September 19, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Robert E. Warren and Margaret M. Warren. Nancy was a beloved mother and grandmother. She was a long time employee of Giles Flowerland prior to her retirement. She was a very active member of Shermont Baptist Church before her health began to decline. She was married to Larry J. Burnette, who died on June 17, 2004. Survivors include a daughter, Tonya Helm, and husband, Patrick, of Greensboro, NC; a son, Robert “Bob’ Warren, and wife, Tammy, of Danville, VA; three grandchildren, Hayleigh Helm, of Greensboro, NC, R. Colby Warren, and Nathan L. Adkins, both of Danville, VA. Graveside rites were held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Highland Burial Park conducted by the Rev. Ryan Riley. Herbert Preston House, Jr. 84, died Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Roman Eagle Health and Rehab Center, following several years of failing health. Herbert was born in Danville, Virginia on November 14, 1929 a son of the late Herbert Preston House, Sr. and the late Molly Mills House. Herbert spent all of his life in the Danville area where he worked in the former Dan River Mills in the instrument shop. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. In Dan River Mills he also taught CPR and advance lifesaving skills. Herbert started his emergency medical career by volunteering with the Westover Hills Vol. Fire Department in the 1970’s. He then went on to join the Danville Life Saving Crew on September 22, 1980 where he would serve over thirty years. While in the life saving crew he served as first lieutenant, captain (1986 to1988), assistant business manager and a training officer. In 1983 he received the Raymond McNeely Memorial Award for outstanding crew member. He was a member of various state and regional emergency services and rescue organizations including the Western Virginia EMS council, a member of the Julian S. Wise Foundation, VAVRS respresentive, member of the Board of directors of the Roanoke Valley Historical Society, VAVRS state historian in helping the rescue and hall of fame exhibit (1991 to 1992), chief rescue officer, CPR chairman of the Danville/ Pittsylvania County, and the Board of Danville Chapter of the American Red Cross. In 1990 Herbert received the American Red Cross Exceptional Volunteer Award for Safety Service and on September 22, 1990 became a life member of the Danville Life Saving Crew. He loved to help with fundraising projects and training new recruits. In 2009 he received the award for Excellence in EMS Educators, which is named in his honor. He was a member of
Fairview United Methodist Church where he served in various offices and committees. On October 19, 1962 Herbert married Josephine P. Compton House who died on September 4, 2013. Survivors include, four children, Suzette H. Devine (Al) of Richmond, VA, Anthony “Tony” House of West Palm Beach FL, Herbert P. House, II (Janette) of Fredericksburg, VA, and Paulette Kindig (David) of Rutherglenn, VA; three grandchildren, Cathy Jo Latner (Jeff), Christy Loving (Jon) and Lindsay Brooke Compton; four great grandchildren, Emma, Addison, Breanna, and Katelyn; loving and supportive cousins, Margie Pickerel and husband Irvin and their daughter, Susan Carol Wyatt. In addition to his parents and wife of fifty years Herbert was predeceased by one sister, Mamie House Beck. A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Fairview United Methodist Church with the Reverend Kathleen Monge officiating, Interment will follow the service in Danville Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army and American Legion, Post 1097 Honor Guard. Ward Calvin “Bud” Hale, 75, of 2767 Red Marshall Rd Pelham, NC died, Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for the past two years. Born on June 27, 1938, in Blacksburg, VA he was a son of the late Andy Mitchell Hale and Mamie Caldwell Hale. Mr. Hale served in the U.S. Air Force and later worked as a Tire Salesman at Smith-Davis Tire Co. He was a member of the Tabernacle and worked with the Awana’s, Bible School, and was a former choir member. He was active with the Danville
Bluegrass Association, and was a former DJ of the Saturday Night Hall of Fame on WAKG. On April 6, 1958, he married Rebecca Young Hale, who survives of the residence. In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Johnny D. Hale, of the residence, Randall Carey Hale, and wife, Linda; Jeffrey Alan Hale, and wife, Vivian, both of Danville, VA; a brother, Gene Hale, and wife, Charlotte, of Blacksburg, VA; a sister, Marie H. Ward, and husband, Lawrence, of Illinois; three grandchildren, Ashley Hale, Erin and Ryan Smith. He was predeceased by a sister, Estelle Hoyt; and a brother, James Hodge. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 13, 2013, at 2:00 PM from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel conducted by the Rev. Lamar Mooneyham and the Rev. R.J. Bobby Watkins Barnes, 84, of Danville, VA died, Wednesday, December 11, 2013 after a decline in health for the past six months. Born in Eden, NC on June 13, 1929, he was the son of the late Hobson Watkins Barnes and Daley Smith Barnes. Mr. Barnes served in the U.S. Air Force and worked in the Maintenance Department for DuPont for 44 years. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. On June 26, 1954, he married Joan Gillbanks Barnes, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Joanne Barnes; a grandson, Benjamin Thomas Schuldt, both of Danville, VA; a number of cousins, and his dog, Chubby. He was predeceased by a daughter, Valerie B. Robert Glen Hayden, 86, of 425 Hermitage Drive, Danville, VA, and formerly of 2549 Slatesville Road, Chatham, VA died December 11, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born March 17, 1927 to the late Pansey Shields Hayden and the late Garnett W. Hayden. Mr. Hayden proudly served his country in the US Army. He worked for Dibrell Brothers Tobacco Co. for a number of years and later worked as a salesman for Town & Country Motors. Mr. Hayden was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church. He is survived by his sister Nancy Hayden Owen of Keeling, VA; his niece Shelby Martin of Danville; his nephew Donald T. Owen of Keeling; his greatnieces Stephanie Phelps, Chrystal O. Mayhew and husband, Steve, and Elizabeth O. Kirby and husband, Kyle; and his great-nephews Stephen Swoap and Donnie Owen and wife, Donya. Mary Louise Lowery Dill, age 85 of Roman Eagle Rehabilitation Center, went home to be with her Lord, Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born, June 17, 1928 in Virgilina, VA to the late Thomas Henry and Lillian Talley Lowery. She is also preceded in death by her husband Herman W. Dill, her daughter, Mary Winifred Dill, her grandson, Michael Steven Powell, her sister, Doris Bowen, her brothers, T. J. Lowery and Gerald Lowery. She was a member of United Baptist Church in Danville, VA where she was very active, she was a
very giving and happy person. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, loved traveling and was an Avon representative for many years. In her early years she worked at Dan River as an inspector and the Danville school system. She was on a bowling league and played basketball in her early years. Ms. Dill is survived by her daughters Brenda Powell (Randy) of Danville, VA, and Sharon Scearce (Jeff) of Dry Fork, VA, her son, Ralph H. Dill (Han Sun) of Danville, VA, her sisters, Annette Beaver of Colonial Heights and McLean Poole of Oxford, NC, her grandchildren, Jeffrey Dill (Emily) Joanna Adkins (Brandon), Bryan Beazley and John Dill, her great grandchildren, Kelsey Edmunds, Kendall Dill and Ryleigh Adkins. Mrs. Powell was a devout Christian, raised in the Brethren denomination and also formerly served as secretary for the Elks Auxiliary. Mona was an avid reader her entire life and was perfectly content with a good book. She also enjoyed traveling with her son and husband during his military career, having made their home in Texas, Hawaii, and Florida before
his retirement. In addition to her husband, she is also survived by her nieces, Nancy Scism (Don) and Patricia (Pat) Brown. Having been raised together, they shared a very special bond more as “sisters.” Also surviving are Cindy McMahan (Wesley) of Arkansas, Tanya Bailey (Raymond) of North Carolina, Monica Dalton of North Carolina, and Judy Thomas (Joseph) of Massachusetts. She is also survived by one nephew, Michael Dalton (Sallie) of Danville; one sister-in-law, Gayle Anthony (Tony) also surviving are a number of great-nieces and nephews.

Ruth moved to the Bachelors Hall Community where she lived most of her adult life. She retired from Dan River Mills in 1971 where she worked in the #4 Gray Inspection Department. Ruth was married 67 years to the late Dewey J. Matherly. Mother was an avid gardener and enjoyed working on the farm and in her flowers. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, canning, and being with her family. Ruth loved going to the beach. She was “Granny” to everyone and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. INGREDIENTS: 15 graham crackers, crushed 2 tablespoons butter, melted 4 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese 1 1/2 cups white sugar 3/4 cup milk 4 eggs 1 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup all-purpose flour DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9 inch springform pan. 2. In a medium bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs with melted butter. Press onto bottom of springform pan. In a large bowl, mix cream cheese 3. with sugar until smooth. Blend in milk, and then mix in the eggs one at a time, mixing just enough to incorporate. Mix in sour cream, vanilla and flour until smooth. Pour filling into prepared crust. 4. Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour. Turn the oven off, and let cake cool in oven with the door closed for 5 to 6 hours; this prevents cracking. Chill in refrigerator until serving.
Ham and Cheese Breakfast Casserole INGREDIENTS: 18 (1 ounce) slices white bread, cubed 8 ounces cooked ham, cubed 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese 1 1/2 cups diced Swiss cheese 6 eggs 3 1/2 cups milk 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 2 cups crushed cornflakes cereal 1/2 cup butter, melted DIRECTIONS: Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking 1. dish. Line the bottom of the dish with half the bread cubes. Sprinkle with ham, Cheddar cheese, and Swiss cheese, and top with remaining bread. In a bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, and onion powder. Pour evenly over bread. Cover, and refrigerate overnight. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F 2. (190 degrees C). In a small bowl, blend the crushed cornflakes and melted butter. Spread evenly over the casserole. Bake 40 minutes in the preheated 3. oven, or until bubbly and golden brown. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

This time of year has been quite different for me as far as preparing for what is usually my FAVORITE time of year. As of this writing, I confess that I have not ventured out to any malls to shop for gifts. I barely had my sister help me decorate my Christmas tree yesterday where it is usually up and ready to receive gifts the weekend after Thanksgiving. I know this may sound a bit depressing, but it is due to my recovery from a recent surgery 4 weeks ago. While this has put a damper on my holiday spirit, it has also offered me an opportunity to sit still and think about what CHRISTmas IS all about and what CHRISTmas ISN”T about. I hope to bring some clarity as you continue reading. I’d like to share with you some of the thoughts that have manifested in my mind and heart during these past few weeks. I’ll begin with what Christmas IS to many: • It IS a time for getting out there amongst the madness and shop for all the special people in your lives even if it means getting into debt over our heads sometimes. • It IS digging up all your favorite recipes and baking Christmas cookies, breads and other delectable treats to share with others around us. • It IS the time when children everywhere have that certain twinkly in their eyes knowing that Santa is on his way with lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh. • Yes it IS that time when that jolly, plump, old man appears wearing his red suit ready to ask kids of all ages if they’ve been naughty or nice. • It IS a time for listening and singing along to favorite Christmas songs, which actually begin right after Thanksgiving. • It IS the time to gather all those gifts and pull out yards and yards of pretty paper and ribbon to wrap them beautifully. • It IS a time when the Christmas tree is trimmed with all the lights, ornaments and tinsel. Of course the topper being that beautiful angel which makes it perfect. • It IS the most wonderful time of the year to spend with family and friends and celebrate each other lives. • But to many the most important about the big day, is that Christmas IS the time to reflect on the birth of Christ, which is actually the truest meaning of all. On the contrary, here’s what Christmas IS NOT: • It IS NOT a time when we forget about all the less fortunate folks who are unable to enjoy ANY the above listed items. • It IS NOT a time to overlook the many who are not celebrating this time of year because of the pain they are feeling over losing a loved one and are not able to experience joy at this time. • It IS NOT a time to lose sight of all those who are sick and shut in and are unable to come out and see, hear, taste, and feel what Christmas is all about this year. • It IS NOT to forget about those who are homeless, cold and hungry who may live right in our own neighborhoods. • It IS NOT a time for us to forget about all of our troops who are sacrificing their lives and being home with their family time in order to keep us safe and preserving our freedom. • Last of all, is IS NOT a time to be so focused on our OWN desires that we forget that Christmas is a time for spreading good cheer to all those around us. I close by wishing everyone a joyous and blessed CHRISTmas. Please remember that the true meaning of Christmas IS all about LOVE, PEACE within ourselves and our loved ones, REACHING out to someone who is in need and being GRATEFUL for the smallest blessings bestowed upon us not just in December but year round.
