Happy New Year!
One More Christmas By Glenn Mollette When I was a child I remember my grandfather suffering chest pains. He kept putting nitroglycerin tablets under his tongue to help with the pain. My mother and I along with grandma and a couple of others sat with grandpa in the family dining room area. After his heart pain subsided he sighed, “I’ll probably never live to see another Christmas.” Looking back I remember that he did have one more Christmas. After grandpa and mamaw died Christmases were never quiet the same. During those special times together we thought they would never pass. It seemed that life and Christmas were frozen in time. To a child Christmas had always been this way and I could never imagine Christmas being any different. We can never comprehend tomorrow. We hope and wish for tomorrow but we don’t fully understand all the changes that tomorrow will bring. We hope for good jobs, paid off mortgages, graduation from school, retirement security and on and on. However as one Christmas after another rolls by so do the years and so does life’s scenery and the people around us. Some people this year will spend their first Christmas in a nursing home. Some this year will spend their first Christmas without a parent or a spouse. Some will try to get through this season without them. Others will try to make it through the season unemployed or with a recent terminal health diagnosis. My wife and I were talking tonight but how better it would be if her father and my parents and others that we loved were still alive. Christmas without them is different. I don’t know what you are going through today. Our nation is dealing with a lot. We have terrorism, financial struggles, and people experiencing lots of stress. Many American families are hoping to just survive the Christmas season and make it to January 1. Hopefully you and I will have one more Christmas. If we do let’s savor each moment. Whatever and whoever you have in your life please take the time to embrace them and love them. Next year could be very different. Take the time to personally enjoy Christmas. I realize Christmas is about giving. We want to see our loved ones smile. However, in the days ahead recharge your battery a little. Read some Christmas stories. Watch some Christmas movies. Reflect on the message of peace and love delivered to the world in the baby Jesus through a peasant couple in Bethlehem. Visit some people in the nursing home, the jail, or those who are aged and lonely. Also connect with some people through visits or just the telephone and say Merry Christmas. It will do them and you a lot of good. May you have many more Christmases, but at least one more, and may it be one of your best ever. Glenn Mollette is an American Syndicated Columnist and Author. EMAIL Oil & Water A family had twin boys whose only resemblance to each other was their looks. If one felt it was too hot, the other thought it was too cold. If one said the TV was too loud, the other claimed the volume needed to be turned up. Opposite in every way, one was an eternal optimist, the other a doom and gloom pessimist. Just to see what would happen, at Christmas time their father loaded the pessimist’s room with every imaginable toy and game. The optimist’s room he loaded with horse manure. That night the father passed by the pessimist’s room and found him sitting amid his new gifts crying bitterly. “Why are you crying?” the father asked. “Because my friends will be jealous, I’ll have to read all these instructions before I can do anything with this stuff, I’ll constantly need batteries, and my toys will eventually get broken.” answered the pessimist twin.
One of our loyal readers came cruising down the sidewalk to pick up his Piedmont Shopper with his pup sidekick! Looks like he took advantage of this beautiful December weather we’ve been having!
Passing the optimist twin’s room, the father found him dancing for joy in the pile of manure. “What are you so happy about?” he asked. To which his optimist twin replied, “There’s got to be a pony in here somewhere!”

The Most Relevant Man in Sports --Is there any drama in sports bigger than the one between Major League Baseball and Pete Rose? The answer to that question depends on how you define drama, granted. And a lot of football fans will point to the equanimity amongst division rivals as a good example of drama. I disagree. Football has been figured out. Get an offensive line that can protect your quarterback so he can hang in there for a few years and learn the supposed offensive scheme that is, invariably, drive the ball downfield relying on tried and true methods -- mainly penalties and bad calls on third down in your favor -- before chucking it up into the corner of the end zone for your tallest wide receiver. That’s the NFL in a nutshell, and that’s why every team seemingly has a shot these days. You pencil in New England for Super Bowl champs, and you give every team with a franchise quarterback a fighting chance. And that’s all well and good. Boxing is still struggling to find a champion worthy of our attention (Tyson Fury got our attention but for all the wrong reasons, and if you don’t know who Fury is ... well, guess he didn’t get your attention) and as intriguing as the UFC may be now that Dana White has figured out how to market champions, it may behoove the sport to occasionally showcase fights that last longer than the lifespan of a mayfly. But baseball, bless the boys of summer. They know how to keep sports fans riveted. One only needs to take in the spectacle that is Pete Rose to understand. For the uninitiated, Pete was an all-star baseball player (17 times!) who hit a ball with a stick more times than any player in history. But Pete bet on
baseball, and he was kicked out of the game in the past century. For some reason, that means people get to talk about him more than any other baseball player in history. And I’m not sure we really understand why it matters. Baseball’s commissioner, Rob Manfred, is a guy most people never heard of until he uttered a few words about Rose a few weeks ago. Rose, said Manfred, was still banned from the game. Media outlets pounced on the story, saying that his decision meant Rose would be ineligible to appear on the Baseball Hall of Fame’s ballot. “Mr. Rose’s public and private comments, including his initial admission in 2004, provide me with little confidence that he has a mature understanding of his wrongful conduct, that he has accepted full responsibility for it, or that he understands the damage he has caused,” Manfred said. Manfred went on to say that Rose let slip during an interview with his office that he still bet on baseball. The guy’s nickname was “Charlie Hustle.” He can’t hustle his way into a dugout. But hey, the joke is on baseball. Who talks about Hall of Famers? When was the last time, say, Willie Stargell, Frank Robinson or Sandy Koufax popped up in conversation? Rose can’t stay out of the news. That’s gotta help the value of his signature, I’m guessing. Either way, whatever baseball thinks it’s doing by banning the guy, whatever moral message it thinks it’s sending ... maybe it should just help the guy admit he was wrong, get him to agree to stop betting on the game and give each other a big hug. Whatever happened to happy endings? Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Giving Back To The Community 6th Annual
Chocolate Hood Toy Drive Hello, My Name is Dada Chappelle (pictured right) and I am a native of Danville, VA., now residing in Charlotte, NC. Bryant Hood (pictured left), Community activist and Owner of ETE (Economic Through Edu-tainment) resides in Danville. We grew up together on Holbrook Ave and Stokes Streetour backyards adjoined. We both have a passion for people and giving back to our community. Together we formed the Chocolate Hood Toy Drive that assists families and underprivileged kids in Danville, VA and the surrounding areas during the Christmas Holiday(s). We go out in the community and collect donations (monetary , toys and clothes). We also get local support from the Barbers and Stylists who donate free cuts and styles in addition to different business who donate as well, such as Pizza HUT, C&D Pawn Shop, and Riverside Bowling Lanes. Our 6th Annual Toy Drive was held on Dec 12th, 2015 at Adam T’s Restaurant and Lounge. We assisted over 50 kids with Free Food, Toys, Clothes and Prizes . We often hear of the negative news that surrounds Danville,VA; which is needed to make all aware of what is happening in our area, however, projects like this, from Bryant and myself, get little or no attention. We are not a nationally recognized organization but we do it from what has been taught and instilled in our hearts. We rise by lifting others and only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have. Thank you, Piedmont Shopper for showcasing our event. If you have any questions or would like to help support our cause for future events, please feel free to contact me, Dada at 336-402-1450. If you wish to donate, please visit, http://m.gofund.me/dd2eujfk or via PayPal at chocolatetoydrive@yahoo. com. ~ Happy Holidays and Be Blessed, From Us With The Chocolate Hood Toy Drive!

PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt “I feel our business has grown every year by advertising in the Piedmont Shopper. Judy Bryant is my advertising consultant.”- Bert Sellers Owner • Seller Brothers, Inc. “We moved here over 5 years ago and LOVE your paper. It was our first time selling items through your ads. Thank you so very much for all you do in giving of yourselves to help others. God bless!” Howard and Lynda Richardson
“Thank you for your free service, had a great yard sale.” -Terri Lovell
“You sold a walker for me, thank you!” -C.C. Moore, Danville
“The Piedmont Shopper is the BEST route to go for advertising your business. They’re professional, fun & truly take care of their clients. I use them for ALL of my advertising & will continue to do so.” Tammy Wiles Owner • Perfect Body Fitness Center & Sports Complex “People ask me all the time to advertise in their media and my answer is always no. Q: I just read your interview with Regina King, and I love the little tease she gave us about what to expect for the second season of “American Crime.” Can you give me any more details? -- Catherine F., via email A: I spoke recently with series newcomer Connor Jessup -- he plays Taylor Blaine, the character whose plot this season centers on -- and he gave me a few more details about the new season, which premieres Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 10/9c. He told me: “The second season kicks off with a completely new story and completely new characters. This year it focuses on a private school and a public school in Indianapolis, and the inciting crime is that my character -- who starts the season as kind of a financial-aid scholarship student at the private school -- accuses a few of the other students, players on the basketball team, of sexually assaulting him at one of the school’s parties. That happens even before the series begins. The entire season is an exploration of the ramifications and the ripples that accusation, that crime, has on the victims, on the accused, on families, on the community and on the school administration. It’s really a mural of what a crime does in a community like this.” Connor told me what he thinks sets this show apart from other TV series in the crime genre: “The good thing about ‘American Crime’ is the plot is obviously there, and the plot keeps things moving, but the core of the show is the human plot, the human element. There are procedural elements, but they are happening in background -- the core of the show is how the ramifications of how all these cracks start to appear in the community.” *** Q: This season of “The Leftovers” was fantastic. Will it be back for another? -- Jake T., via email
Connor Jessup Photo Credit: Courtesy Paul Smith A: HBO recently announced that “The Leftovers,” which just wrapped its critically acclaimed second season Dec. 6, will indeed be back for a third and final season, most likely in fall 2016. Series executive producer Damon Lindelof said: “The most exciting thing for us as storytellers would be to bring ‘The Leftovers’ to a definitive end ... wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional.” *** READERS: More than a year ago, I reported on rumors that Steve Perry was ready to make a comeback to the music scene after a video of him appearing on stage with the Eels in May 2014 singing “Open Arms” went viral. I am thrilled to report that these rumors have become a reality. Steve recently told KSWD in L.A.: “I finally went into the studio in March, and I’ve been in there ever since, just trying to finish this record.” He does not have a set release date yet, but says he’s looking forward to finishing it. “I want to get it done probably in the early part of this coming year.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Sicario” (R) -- The drug wars along the U.S.-Mexico border are a hazy, morally ambiguous nightmare where doing The Right Thing is never what it appears. Emily Blunt stars as FBI Agent Kate Marcy, an upright investigator who sees first-hand some of the worst carnage wrought by the ruthless drug cartels. She’s called into a secretive assignment by a swaggering operative from another agency (Josh Brolin), and tossed into the heart of darkness along with a shady “adviser” claiming to be a former Colombian prosecutor (Benicio Del Toro). It’s memorable and unsettling, which is good. Director Dennis Villanueve packs such tension into every frame, all of it tied to the twisting maze the audience follows through Blunt’s performance. It’s thrilling and intense, but not exactly a joy ride of go-get-’em cops vs. crooks.
Emily Blunt in “Sicario” Photo Credit: Richard Foreman, Jr. SMPSP/ Lionsgate when they have to come of age and save their skins due to a zombie outbreak hitting their small California town. While on a camping trip, Ben and Carter (Tye Sheridan and Logan Miller) decide to finally ditch the Scouts -- and their dorky friend Augie (Joey Morgan) -- so they can go to a party and try to be like the other teens. Too bad everybody’s turned into zombies when they get back to town, and they have to horror-comedy their way to safety with help from a waitress from the local strip club (Sarah Dumont). It doesn’t do much to revitalize the overdone zombie-comedy field, but it tries. “Infinitely Polar Bear” (R) -- Cameron (Mark Ruffalo) has the bursts of irrepressible optimism and energy that make him an amazing friend and father. What usually follows, however, is a terrible crash of depression and confusion. Writer-director Maya Forbes made the film with pieces of her own childhood, growing up with a father who dealt with bipolar disorder. After a serious breakdown puts Cameron in a mental hospital, his wife Maggie (Zoe Saldana) struggles to raise their two daughters on her own. When Maggie makes the decision to go to grad school so she can provide a better life, Cameron has to step up as a full-time father and pillar of stability for his girls. It’s a complicated and compassionate look at how mental illness, love and family interact.
“The Walk” (PG) -- Back in the ‘70s, when many New Yorkers were still bemoaning how the two “giant file cabinets” of the Twin Towers were ruining the distinctive skyline, a mercurial Frenchman saw the WTC and dreamed a big dream. Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) had a circus-y background in Europe, but put on his biggest show in New York when he walked a tight-rope between the iconic skyscrapers. The movie quickly covers Petit’s background, before getting to the planning and execution of the walk. At first, you may think, “Guy walks across a wire, that’s a whole movie?” Well, the whole thing was quite illegal and required heist-style planning and infiltration to accomplish, complete with a ragtag band of specialists and TV RELEASES amateurs. The movie really “True Detective: Season 2” does pick up right around “Agatha Christie’s Partners In the central stunt, as Robert Crime” Zemeckis knows how to “It’s Always Sunny in stretch and get every ounce Philadelphia Season 10” of wonder out of a pivotal “Luther: Season 4” moment. “Broad City: Season 2”

As families spread out across the country and even across the globe, the holidays can become a little more difficult to navigate. According to AAA, a federation of motor clubs throughout the United States, roughly 90 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more for year-end holidays. Families that are spread out must decide where to spend the holidays together. But in some cases, families can’t all be together, so celebrations must be handled remotely and gifts shipped to waiting recipients. Shopping for gifts may have taken some time, but now you will have to figure out how to get those gifts where they need to go. The following are some pointers for holiday celebrants who are driving, flying, taking a bus, or shipping gifts. - Shipping dates If the goal is to purchase and ship gifts near and far, starting early has its advantages. Thousands upon thousands of cards and packages are shipped each day during the holiday season. In 2013, shipping giant UPS projected 132 million deliveries during the last week before Christmas, and actual figures exceeded those expectations. Many shipping services will get packages to recipients on time, but customers can help them along by sending them several weeks before the holidays. Shipping later in the season may incur additional fees for priority shipping. Always check sellers’ “purchase by” dates to ensure items will arrive on time. Items that will be shipped internationally should include a detailed description as well as the value of the package. Presents under a certain value may be duty-free or tax-exempt. Check with customs to get a better idea of the shipping regulations. - Plane ride Airlines have specific regulations in place regarding which items can and cannot be brought on planes, at least inside of the cabin. Thanks to increased security measures, restrictions are greater than they once were. Transportation Security Administration officers may have to inspect items for safety purposes. It may be better to leave gifts unwrapped and then wrap them after the flight to avoid hassles during the screening process. Liquids, including foods, may need to be put in a checked bag if they exceed 3.4 ounces. Consider shipping delicate items ahead of time if you are concerned about breakage. - Packing the car If a holiday road trip is in your future, space constraints may require you to be a little creative when packing the car. Shop for smaller gifts, including gift cards, which are easier to transport. Advise family and friends that you will have limited space so they should not go overboard with regard to gifts given to you in return. Heed safety precautions and do not obscure driver visibility in the car by stacking presents too high. Also, secure boxes and packages in the car so they do not slide or move around. Anything that is not secured can become airborne in the event of a collision, increasing the risk for injury. Items placed on roof racks should be tightly secured so they don’t fall off and present a hazard. Those who will be traveling for the holidays should plan how to transport any gifts they will be bringing along long before the day comes to hit the road.

In 2015 the Department of Veterans Affairs made an important change to the Veterans Choice program: the distance to medical centers. Originally, the distance was measured as the crow flies. In mountainous regions, that straight line could turn into double the miles in actual travel. The change it made was to switch to driving miles: If a veteran is over 40 miles driving distance from a medical facility with a full-time primary-care physician, he or she qualifies for care at a civilian facility. The VA recently added more changes to the Choice program. A veteran now qualifies if he or she: * Cannot get a desired appointment within 30 days, or if an appointment can’t be scheduled within 30 days of when the physician wants the patient to be seen. * Must take a boat, ferry or airplane to get to the closest VA facility. * Faces a burden in the form of frequency of care needed, medical condition,

* It was noted 20thcentury French-Swiss film director, screenwriter and critic Jean-Luc Godard who made the following sage observation: “A story should have a beginning, a middle and an end, but not necessarily in that order.” * Those who study such things say that Roman emperor Gaius Julius Verus Maximinus was more than 8 feet tall. * If you live east of the Rocky Mountains, you’ve probably spent summer evenings watching the flashing green or yellow lights of those beetles we call fireflies. You might be surprised to learn, though, that different species have different colored lights. For instance, the Paraguayan railway beetle can show both green and red lights (like a railway lantern; hence, the name). * According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are currently more than 1,500 American residents named “Seven.”
* The Taj Mahal, widely known as “the jewel of Muslim art in India,” was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, who wanted the tomb of his favorite wife to be housed in splendor. After construction was complete, Jahan wanted to ensure that this architectural wonder would never have a rival, so he had the chief architect and main artisans put to death. The stone masons who had done the best work on the structure had their hands amputated, and the artists responsible for the delicate inlay work were blinded. * In some parts of colonial America it was illegal to kiss your spouse in public. *** * Thought for the Day: “The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls.” -Elizabeth Cady Stanton (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
