Mrs. Effie Lucille Perkins Barker, age 94, of 312 Swain Drive, entered t h e a r m s of Jesus on M o n d a y , December 14, 2015 at her residence. She was born in Pittsylvania County on September 18, 1921 to the late Willie and Mary John Perkins. She lived her entire life in Danville where she and her late husband, Clarence “Bubba” Barker, owned and operated Bubba’s Ice Cream and Soda Shop. She was a member of North Main Baptist Church and she devoted her life to caring for her son. Mrs. Barker is survived by her son, Ronnie Barker, of Danville. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by one sister and one brother. He was a wonderful young man and was loved by many. Jeane Elizabeth Schermerhorn Blair, age 90, formerly of Danville, died on December 8, 2015, at home in Athens, AL, where she had lived with her daughter and family for the past 6 years. Mrs. Blair was born in Glen Allen, VA, on June 27, 1925, as the eighth of ten children to the late Arthur Carrollton Schermerhorn and Rosa Ferguson Schermerhorn. She moved to Danville in 1949 to live with her sister Rosemary McElheney and her family. On May 25, 1951, she married Robert P. Blair, Jr., at Fairview United Methodist Church, where they served as members and leaders of the choir, Sunday School, and various committees for more than 50 years. She was predeceased by her husband and by her oldest daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Jeane Scarlett. She is survived by her youngest daughter, Robyn Blair Mitchell, and son-inlaw Dan Mitchell of Athens, AL; six grandchildren, Joshua Blair Mitchell, Hannah Virginia Mitchell, Ethan Lee Mitchell, Sarah Grace Mitchell, and Claire Elizabeth Mitchell, all of Athens, AL, and Samuel Stephen Scarlett; one sister, Nancy Ballou, of Wicomico, VA; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was employed with Belk-Leggett Department Store and later with Wilmarth and Shanks Surveyors until her retirement. Kitty was predeceased by her first husband, Edward “Ed” Gosney, her second husband, Willie S. Bass and a number of brothers and sisters. She is survived by a sister, Alyce Gillie of Virginia Beach, Va. and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Friday, December 11th at 3 p.m. in Highland Burial Park with the Reverend Paul Johnson officiating. William D. Wiggins, Jr.
Mr. William D. Wiggins Jr., age 83 passed away on Friday, December 18, 2015 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health. Mr. Wiggins was born in Danville on April 25, 1932, a son of the late William D. Wiggins, Sr. and Virgie Wrenn Wiggins. Besides his parents he was predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn Wiggins Terry and Mary Lee Wiggins Rawley. He served in the United States Air Force in the Korean War and later returned to Danville to work with the U. S. Postal Service until his retirement. Mr. Wiggins was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. He was a proud member of the Disabled American Veterans both locally and on a national level. He is survived by a daughter, Sherri Wiggins Mobley, a granddaughter, Kendall Ann Mobley, and a special friend, Shirley Cunningham. James Mack Jones, 72, of 1512 Halifax Road, Danville, VA died on Monday, December 14, 2015 in Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for the past several years. Mack was born in Pittsylvania County on February 20, 1943 a son to the late Lewis Garfield Jones and Louise Wilson Jones. He had lived
all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville where he had owned & operated Mack’s Home Improvement until his retirement due to his health. Mack was of the Baptist Faith. On April 25, 1962 Mack married the late Linda Weadon Jones who died on November 11, 2001. Mack is survived by two daughters Tammy J. Barts & husband Tab of Ringgold, VA, Rhonda J. Jones & husband David of Danville, VA, three sisters Janice J. Inman & husband Bobby of Axton, VA, Betty J. Dove & husband Johnny, Margaret J. Riddle & husband Gerald all of Danville, VA, four grandchildren & three great grandchildren. He was by predeceased his parents, his wife and one son James Mack Jones Jr. and one brother Bobby L. Juanita Anderson Rowsey
Juanita Anderson Rowsey, 86, formally of Frankl i n Turnpike, C h a tham, V A , died on Mond a y , December 14, 2015 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after being in declining health for the past year. Mrs. Rowsey was born in Danville, VA on June 10, 1929, daughter of the late Charlie H. Anderson and the late Annie Mae Lindsey Anderson. She spent all of her life in the Danville area where she worked at Nick and Nita Restaurant. She was a member of Blessed Hope. On December 3, 1948 she married the late John David “Nick” Rowsey. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by sons, David R. Rowsey and Timothy A. Rowsey; sisters, Kathleen Hamrah, Louise Templeton and Marie Ainslie. Survivors include, daughter, Terry R. Ferguson of Chattanooga, TN; sister, Lois A. Burns of Chatham, VA; grandsons, Jason Cardwell and wife Tammy and Patrick Ross; and great grandchildren, Hali Cardwell, Kyle Eanes and Courtney Eanes. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mausoleum Chapel at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Brian Edwards officiating. Steven Byrd Willis, 68, of 111 Wilton A v e , D a n ville, VA died at his residence on Friday, December 18, 2015, after a brief illness. Born in Danville, VA on November 5, 1947, he was a son of the late Lipscomb Claude Willis and Christine Byrd Willis. Steve was graduate of George Washington High School. He retired from Dan River, Inc. where he was assistant manager of Commission Finishing. He enjoyed playing golf and watching college sports. He particularly loved spending time at Smith Mountain Lake. On July 1, 1992 he married, Jane Slayton Willis, In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Wendy W. Cook of Danville, his brother, Randy Willis, of Wilson, NC; two granddaughters, Emily T. Dahm, and Lilly Wyatt. He was predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth Byrd Willis.
