Welcome To The River District!

Light Show Hopes To Brighten Community’s Holidays DANVILLE, VA – It’s that time of year again – time to pack as many family members into one vehicle as you safely and legally can and drive through Ballou Park for a magical tour of lights before stopping by Santa’s workshop for a photo and hot chocolate, courtesy of Danville Parks and Recreation. The Second Annual Community Holiday Light Show will be held in historic Ballou Park from Dec. 12 – 27 (closed on Dec. 24). The cost is $7/car, cash only, but the memories are forever. “We love the light show,” said Lynette Anderson, one of the event’s organizers. “Not only is it a great event, it’s also a chance to involve community and a chance to give back.” The displays in the show are entirely built by community members and organizations and all will be competing for the designation of Best in Show; the prize is a donation to the winner’s charity of choice. The show itself is manned almost entirely by volunteer groups, who earn a portion of the gate the night in which they work. “Last year, the show donated around $4,200 to local non-profits,” Anderson said. “We were pleasantly surprised. In our inaugural year, we had over 1,000 cars to drive through the park and we estimate that around 3,500 people made a new tradition with us. We also captured and printed more than 650 photos with Santa before he had to return to the North Pole.” Anderson said the idea of a light show had often been presented to the Parks and Recreation Department, but the price tag on a large-scale event was far beyond reach. “Typically, cities and towns spend thousands and upward toward millions of dollars on holiday light shows, what we did in Danville was truly unique,” she added. “We created a new tradition in one of Danville’s oldest parks.” This year’s show will be open from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The show will be closed on Dec. 24. Santa will be on hand for photos nightly until 9 p.m. until Dec. 23. The entrance gate is located off Park Avenue. Exit only on West Main Street across from Ballou Shopping Center. Gates close 15 minutes prior to the end of the show each night. For more information, visit PlayDanvilleVA.com or call 434-793-4636. There are still a few more spaces open for light displays. There is no cost to enter a display. All displays should be set by Dec. 10. Danville Parks and Recreation will provide the power to light displays.

Call 434.822.1800 To See How Your Ad Could Be Here! Emphasize Safety When Decorating For The Holidays Decking the halls for the holidays is a beloved tradition for many families. A home’s exterior festooned with lights help create a festive holiday mood, while stockings hung by the chimney and a Christmas tree in the living room bring that holiday cheer inside. Though the holiday season is a festive time of year, it can quickly turn tragic if revelers do not emphasize safety when decorating their homes. When decorating this holiday season, be sure to employ the following precautions so your holiday season is festive, decorative and safe. * Exercise extreme caution with holiday lights. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, 150 home fires per year begin with holiday lights and other decorative lighting. Such fires may start because of frayed or bare wires, broken or cracked sockets or even loose connections. It’s important that men and women be especially careful when decorating their homes with holiday lights, inspecting each set of lights for damage and discarding any damaged sets. When choosing lights, use only lights that have been certified for outdoor use on your home’s exterior, and never use outdoor lights inside. * Purchase the right Christmas tree. The Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that Christmas trees are involved in hundreds of fires causing an average of 15 deaths each year. In addition, such fires cause an average of $13 million in property damage annually. Though it can be tempting to purchase the most eye-catching Christmas tree you find, avoid acting rashly until you have learned a little about the tree. Artificial trees should be labeled as “Fire Resistant.” Such trees can still catch fire, but they are more resistant to fire than trees without such labels. When buying a live tree, make sure the tree is fresh. The tree should be green, and its needles should be difficult to pull off of branches, which should not be easily breakable. Tap the tree on the ground before purchasing it. If the tree loses a lot of needles upon tapping the ground, it isn’t fresh. Trees that aren’t fresh are more susceptible to going up in flames. * Keep the tree away from heat sources. Though it might seem more idyllic to place your Christmas tree next to the fireplace, it’s a lot more dangerous as well. When choosing a spot for your tree, find a place that is away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators and vents. But homeowners also should know that even trees placed away from heat sources can still dry out, creating a fire hazard even if the tree was fresh and healthy when purchased. That’s because Christmas trees can quickly dry out in heated rooms. Monitor the tree’s water levels every day, checking those levels in both the morning and at night before going to bed. This prevents the tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard, and it also helps the tree maintain its aesthetic appeal through the holiday season. * Limit use of candles. Like Christmas trees, candles are a popular yet potentially hazardous decorative item during the holiday season. When decorating with candles, be sure that all candles are extinguished before leaving a room and never leave them burning when you go to bed. Candles should be kept away from any decorative items, including Christmas trees, that can catch fire. Never place candles near curtains, furniture or presents. Holiday enthusiasts with little children or pets at home might want to decorate with fake LED-light candles instead of traditional candles. Curious kids or excitable pets may not recognize the potential dangers of lit candles and, as a result, might burn themselves or tips candles over. The holiday season is upon us, and that means scores of celebrants will be decking their halls. Though festive decorations are a part of the season, safety should always come first.

reading your question was to consider an auction house. Heritage Auctions in Dallas has liquidated wine collections in the past and might be a good source to contact. The company generated annual sales last year of $900 million and is always accepting quality consignments in more than 40 categories. Contact is 3500 Maple Dr., Dallas, TX 75219; 877437-4824. *** Q: I have four swan planters that are marked “Hull.” I bought them at a thrift shop for $150 for the set. They seem to be in excellent shape. I am enclosing pictures. What are your thoughts? -Maryanne, Tyler, Texas A: The Hull Pottery Company produced many novelty items depicting fowl, but swans probably became the most widely produced design. The swans came in various sizes. I found your swans in “Warman’s Hull Pottery: Identification & Price Guide” by David Doyle and published by Krause Books. According to Doyle, your planters are worth $10-$25 each.

--Q: I recently purchased a plate with an image of a ship with “Remember the Maine” across the top. I paid $15 for it at an Atlanta flea market and think I got quite a bargain. I am enclosing a picture. It looks like new. -- Barbara, Savannah, Georgia A: I looked at the picture you sent me and your statement that it looks like new kept bouncing around in my head. In my opinion, you bought a reproduction. I base this opinion on two things: The piece does, indeed, look like new, and the price you paid was too good to be true. Many commemorative plates are being reproduced by the evil elves in China. For example, in the area where I live the market is being flooded with cobalt Shirley Temple mugs -- all fakes. My advice is do your homework before making a purchase and when a price seems to be too low to be real, alas, it generally is. *** Q: My uncle recently died in the Napa area of California. He had an incredible vintage wine collection. My sister and I have decided to dispose of the collection, which includes more than 1,000 bottles. Can you help us? -- Stephen, Coral Gables, Florida A: The first idea that occurred to me after

As temperatures decrease during the fall and winter months, energy usage and costs tend to climb. These five energy-saving tips for your home will ensure the comfort of your family and your wallet. 1. Adjust your thermostat. Lower the heat on your thermostat while you are away from home and before you go to bed. Better yet, invest in a programmable thermostat so you don’t have to give it a second thought. 2. Seal gaps around windows and doors. Cracks and gaps around windows and doors can let cold drafts into your home. Weather-stripping or caulking will seal these problem areas and keep your home warmer, without having to turn up the heat. 3. Insulate well to protect your home from the cold. Add insulation to your basement walls, headers or attic to make a noticeable difference in the temperature of your home and its energy consumption. A mineral wool product specifically designed for thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt, is ideal. This type of batt insulation will also provide protection from fire, moisture and unwanted noise. Adding insulation is one of the simplest and most-cost effective ways to increase home energy efficiency. 4. Make use of natural sources of heat. Pull back your curtains to let natural light in. The sun can help to warm a room with its rays on a bright fall or winter day. If there are any large windows in your home that don’t receive much sunlight, keep the curtains closed to form a barrier from the cold. 5. Use ceiling fans to your advantage. In the winter, set the fan to rotate clockwise. The blades will pull the air up and around, redirecting warm air that rises back down into the living space. The effect can help you lower your thermostat by two degrees in the winter. While cutting back on energy may seem more challenging as the weather gets colder, it doesn’t have to be. There are many no- or low-cost methods to conserve energy that can provide consistent savings over time. Q: With all the news of “Fuller House” being in production, it got me to wondering what else Lori Loughlin has going on. What happened to her Western series? -- Tina Y., via email A: The lovely and talented 51-year-old actress does indeed co-star -- with Jack Wagner, Erin Krakow and Daniel Lissing -- in a third season of “When Calls the Heart,” a family Western drama that was developed by Michael Landon Jr. and airs on the Hallmark Channel. The third season kicks off Saturday, Dec. 26, with a two-hour movie, with the season itself beginning in February. In the meantime, you can catch up with seasons one and two via Amazon and Netflix, and on DVD at local retail stores. *** Q: I was intrigued by the new FX series “The Bastard Executioner,” especially Stephen Moyer and Katey Segal. Can you tell me if it’ll be back for another season? -- Deena G., via email A: Creator and showrunner Kurt Sutter made the announcement in November that the numbers to continue the series, which also starred Lee Jones, didn’t add up. He revealed: “The numbers just didn’t sustain the cost of the show, quite frankly. It’s all math at the end of the day. We couldn’t establish that core audience that allows you to figure out your advertising paradigm and whether or not the show is affordable.” *** Q: I have heard no word about whether there will be a sequel to the Daniel Craig/Rooney Mara version of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” Will there be a second and third movie to follow the books? -- Patrick J., Fresno, California A: “The Hollywood Reporter” broke the news that the David Fincherdirected version of the hit Swedish film series (as well as the original book series) is kaput. However, Sony is looking to restart the series, but will base it

Lori Loughlin Photo Credit: Crown Media United on the recently released fourth book, “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” which was written by David Lagercrantz. He continues the series created by the late Stieg Larsson, who wrote the original “Tattoo” trilogy and died of a heart attack in 2004. Neither Daniel, Rooney nor David is attached to this film reboot. Alicia Vikander is being eyed for the lead role, and Steven Knight (“World War Z”) will pen the script. According to the bookjacket summary, the story goes: “Late one night, (Mikael) Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female superhacker -- a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for ‘Millennium,’ turns to (Lisbeth) Salander for help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. The secret they are both chasing is at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com.
