Cholesterol and its Relation to Heart Disease High cholesterol levels have long been directly linked to heart disease. But as more research into cholesterol and its relation to heart disease is conducted, some doctors are shifting their views on the relationship between the two. Statistics from the American Heart Association indicate that 75 million Americans currently suffer from heart disease. And even though one-quarter of the population takes cholesterol-lowering medication and have reduced the fat content of their diets, the AHA estimates that more Americans will die of heart disease than ever before. More revelations are coming to the forefront regarding cholesterol and heart disease. New research has shown that statin drugs are ineffective at reducing mortality rates in most populations. Furthermore, according to the Framingham Heart Study, which is the longest-running and most comprehensive study on heart disease to date, it was demonstrated that cholesterol intake in the diet had no correlation with heart disease. The study found that men and women with above average cholesterol levels had nearly identical rates of heart disease compared to those with below average cholesterol rates. Another potential eye opener is that, in addition to cholesterol not affecting heart disease risk, eating high-cholesterol foods does not elevate blood-cholesterol levels as doctors once thought. Ancel Keys, who is considered the “father” of the theory that cholesterol contributes to heart disease, now says that there’s no connection between cholesterol in food and cholesterol in the blood. If not cholesterol levels and the foods one eats, what, then is responsible for heart disease? Many medical professionals and researchers now believe the primary causes of heart disease are inflammation and oxidative stress. According to Dr. Dwight Lundell, a heart surgeon and author of the book, “The Great Cholesterol Lie,” foods like refined sugars and vegetable oils used to preserve processed foods may lead to the inflammation that ultimately causes heart disease. Inflammation is the body’s immune response to a foreign invader. Foods high in sugar and saturated fat can exacerbate inflammation. Bacteria and other unwanted substances in the body also contribute to inflammation. To combat inflammation, people can adopt a healthy eating style. Fatty fish, whole grains, leafy greens, fiber, and nuts can help reduce inflammation. Exercise also can reduce inflammation. Research from Mark Hamer, PhD, an epidemiologist at University College London, found that, regardless of BMI or weight, study participants who completed 2.5 hours of moderate exercise each week — about 20 minutes a day — lowered their markers of inflammation by at least 12 percent. When a person exercises, muscle tissue releases a protein molecule called cytokine, which likely prompts an inflammation drop. Just about any type of workout that raises heart rate is effective in helping with inflammation. The public may have been misinformed about just how vital it is to reduce cholesterol levels. Contrary to popular belief, high cholesterol may not have the same connection to heart disease as doctors once thought. In fact, inflammation may be the bigger component in heart disease risk.

Life Is Like A Biscuit One Sunday morning at a small southern church, the new pastor called on one of his older deacons to lead in the opening prayer. The deacon stood up, bowed his head and said, “Lord, I hate buttermilk.” The pastor opened one eye and wondered where this was going. The deacon continued, “Lord, I hate lard.” Now the pastor was totally perplexed. The deacon continued, “Lord, I ain’t too crazy about plain flour. But after you mix ‘em all together and bake ‘em in a hot oven, I just love biscuits.” “Lord help us to realize when life gets hard, when things come up that we don’t like, whenever we don’t understand what you are doing, that we need to wait and see what you are making. After you get through mixing and baking, it’ll probably be something even better than biscuits.” Amen

Frugal Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day A day set aside to shower a loved one with gifts and touching words of affection, Valentine’s Day brightens the often gloomy month of February. Established centuries ago with origins shrouded in mystery, Valentine’s Day has evolved into one of the most popular — and expensive — days of the year. Many couples celebrate Valentine’s Day with cards, gifts and nights out on the town, and such celebrations can stretch budgets. Coming on the heels of post-holiday bills, Valentine’s Day can feel like a costly prospect. Yet, even those on a budget can enjoy a special day to remember without breaking the bank. The following are several frugal ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day. • Create your own greeting card. It can be challenging to find cards that offer just the right sentiments. Sometimes cards seem distant, too risqué or overly sentimental. Instead, create your own card. Find a decorative blank card or make one from card stock. Search through your digital photos and print one of the two of you together. Glue on a paper heart border, and then jot down some affectionate sentiments. • Cleverly wrap favorite chocolate. Chocolate is synonymous with Valentine’s Day, and it’s easy to spend a lot on gourmet chocolates without even knowing if your valentine will like what’s inside the box. Stick to what you know he or she likes, even if it’s a simple chocolate bar from a convenience store. Buy a few and then wrap them in a fancy box with ribbon. • Go out for a small bite to eat. If you’re concerned about the cost of an expensive dinner out or anticipate being restricted to a certain menu, plan to dine at home. You can opt to go out for cocktails prior or head to a café for dessert and cappuccino afterward. This way you’ll still get the experience of going out without being forced to overspend. • Purchase a rosebush. Bouquets of roses are traditional gifts for Valentine’s Day. However, thanks to the increased demand, the cost of roses tends to increase as Valentine’s Day draws nearer. If you want to save money but still give roses, buy a plant that blooms each year. Buy a rosebush and plan to put it in the garden come spring when all danger of frost is gone. • Turn older jewelry new again. Diamonds and other jewelry can be costly. If a new piece simply isn’t in the budget, consider repurposing an older piece of jewelry that isn’t worn as often. It’s amazing what a new setting on a ring can look like or how stones on a seldom-used necklace can be turned into fashionable stud earrings. If you have a good amount of mismatched gold jewelery lying around, you may be able to sell it or have it melted down and turned into a beautiful new creation.

The Generalist
--It’s funny to hear Donald Trump give a stump speech about generals. “We need a Patton or a MacArthur. I always see our generals on TV, saying we can’t beat ISIS. Patton wouldn’t be on TV; Patton would have been too busy winning the war. And when he was done, he’d ask ‘Where to next?’ OK?” The scenario he presents has become a reliable applause line, except at, you know, the Pentagon, where one would surmise that the generals don’t care much for his assessment. Besides, what does Trump know about war? He all but dodged the draft during the Vietnam War, but he does know a thing or two about Generals. He used to own them. While it may seem hard to believe now, there once was an alternative football league. Trump doesn’t like to talk about it very much, probably because the United States Football League was a “yuge” disaster. The story of its supposed “premier” franchise, the New Jersey Generals, does offer a pretty good character study of the businessman turned presidential candidate. The league was born in 1983 at the luxurious 21 Club in Manhattan, New York (in case some of you confused it with Manhattan, Kansas). The idea was to start a “made for TV” league that played in the spring and early summer. It would focus more on the game-play than stars, and it would be the first league to be televised on both network TV (ABC) and cable (ESPN). Trump, the guy everyone counted on being the voice of the league and owner of the New Jersey Generals, bailed at the last minute, citing his need to focus on building Trump Tower. After a losing inaugural season, but plenty of
buzz due to the signing of Hershel Walker, Trump bought the team back in 1984 and promptly threw out the script. He signed/ stole QB Brian Sipe from the NFL, fired the head coach and dominated the back pages for a while as word leaked that he was trying to hire Don Shula away from the Miami Dolphins. Instead, he hired former Jets coach Walt Michaels and sat back to watch them go 14-4 and lose in the first round of the playoffs. Not satisfied, Trump traded away Sipe and then signed Boston College QB Doug Flutie who, like Walker, was a former Heisman trophy winner. The next season, Walker smashed records and the Generals still lost in the first round. Up until that point, it was still a pretty enjoyable league. Jim Kelly, Steve Young, Doug Williams, Reggie White, Marcus Dupree, Coach Dick Vermeil ... there were some good games (some are available on You Tube). Then, Trump went berserk. After turning the league into a money pit due to lavish spending, some owners walked away. Then teams started to merge. One day we woke up to find that the Houston Gamblers had merged with the Generals. The league started to turn into “the Art of the Deal.” Trump next convinced the other owners to move the league into fall, ostensibly to force the NFL to merge with the USFL. Then the USFL sued the NFL, claiming they had a monopoly. The judge agreed. The reward? Three dollars! The league folded, everyone went their separate ways, and Trump refuses to talk about the Generals past ... unless it’s Patton or MacArthur, of course. 3 Steps to Kick Off a Year of Good Health (Family Features) A fresh beginning with a new year is the perfect time for a health assessment to ensure you are ready to take on a full and active year ahead. Even if you’re feeling great, it’s a smart practice to take time to identify potential problems before they become more serious health concerns. Early detection of ailments, such as cardiovascular disease, can significantly impact an individual’s ability to cope with the disease, allowing you to make adjustments such as changes in diet and lifestyle, or when necessary, drug therapies and other medical treatments. Delaying detection of this serious disease until its more advanced stages can have dire consequences. With these three steps, you can get a better picture of your cardiovascular health and identify silent, hidden risk factors (like plaque in your arteries) that you may not even know are there. 1. Get your blood pressure checked. Blood pressure measures how much force a person’s blood is putting on the artery walls as the heart pumps. High blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs when your heart has to work extra hard to pump blood throughout the body. High blood pressure often happens when arteries lose their elasticity through hardening caused by cholesterol, plaque or scarring. Many people do not experience symptoms of high blood pressure, so it’s important to have your blood pressure checked periodically. Screening for high blood pressure involves placing a pressure cuff around your upper arm to monitor both diastolic and systolic blood pressure. A normal systolic reading is between 90 and 119, and a normal diastolic reading is 60-79.
2. Get your cholesterol checked. A simple finger-stick screening measures total cholesterol as well as three different kinds of lipids in your blood (HDL, LDL and triglycerides), which are important in determining your heart health. Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as the “bad” cholesterol and can build up in the walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Along with other substances, it can form plaque - a thick, hard deposit that can clog those arteries. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as “good” cholesterol because it carries LDL away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it’s passed from the body. A high HDL level helps prevent heart disease, while a low HDL level increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Triglycerides are the most common type of fat. Like cholesterol, they circulate in blood but are stored in the body for extra energy. A high triglyceride level combined with a low HDL or high LDL can speed up the process of plaque formation in the arteries. 3. Learn about other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Many people in the early stages of cardiovascular disease are asymptomatic, meaning they have no symptoms to indicate their health is at risk. Some common risk factors include age (55 and older), family history, tobacco use and high bloodpressure, other factors, such as high cholesterol, aren’t as easily observed. Preventive health screenings, such as those provided by Life Line Screening, can give you a fuller picture of how risk factors may be stacking up. The screenings are designed by doctors and administered by trained professionals to help detect hidden health issues. Within a couple of weeks, you can receive easy-to-understand test results to share with your doctor so you can work together to prevent serious problems before they start. To starting the year off right with a preventive health screening, visit lifelinescreening.com.

Lovely Lady Lingerie
You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt

Settings Financial Goals…
The Wikipedia definition: A goal is a desired result a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development. Many people endeavor to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines. I have always believed in setting goals. In many of the seminars that I do I talk about setting short term and long term goals for your finances. It is also important that you set deadlines and make them attainable goals. When it comes to finances some of your goals might be to improve your credit score, pay down debt, have money in savings, or start planning for retirement. Whatever your goal is, it is important to educate yourself on the best way to achieve that goal and then take action. Reaching a short term goal of $100 in a savings account will motivate you toward a long term goal of $1,000.00. When it comes to reaching your financial goals URW Community Federal Credit Union is always here to help.

(MS) — Excessive energy bills can be a concern in spring and summer, just as much as they are in the winter. So how can you save money while keeping your home cool? The solution is simple: Top up your attic insulation. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary over the warmer months. Most attics are insulated, but oftentimes the amount of insulation present is inadequate — especially in older homes. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay a fire- and moisture-resistant batt insulation, like Roxul Comfortbatt, on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first layer. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists; cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather-stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. When a house is insulated properly, energy savings can add up over time. Remember, insulation starts working the moment it is installed and can last for the life of the building. Tips on this easy, low-cost DIY project that will reduce your home’s energy loss and save you money are available at www.diywithroxul.com.

Common Shaving Myth Debunked
--DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 48-year-old, athletically fit man with excessive body hair on my back, chest and arms. I see that the younger generation of men at the gyms, pools and beaches seem to all groom (shave) their body hair for better appearance. I started trimming down but have not fully shaved. My concern is whether, when you cut hair, it grows faster. When I’m in my upper 60s or 70s and decide to stop, will my body hair grow to 4 inches long? Does your body hair continue to grow at a normal rate when you’re older, or does it slow down? Please advise. -- M.C. ANSWER: No, it’s a myth that cutting or shaving hair makes it grow faster. It certainly might seem to come in more coarsely, since the cut hair under the surface of the skin is thick. But there is no effect on hair growth. Hair growth rates stay roughly the same throughout adulthood. I am aware that the current trend is for hairless-appearing skin. However, I see a lot of people with infections from shaving. If you do shave, use plenty of mild shaving cream or gel, always use a new, sharp razor, and use a soothing aftershave cream or lotion to help close the pores after shaving. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old male in good health. I take a 40-mg simvastatin and a 150-mcg levothyroxine. I exercise three times a week -- one hour with weights and one hour of aerobics (elliptical and treadmill). On the treadmill, I go from
a speed of 3.5 for 25 seconds to 6.0 for 25 seconds. My heart rate goes from 89 to 170 (sometimes 165 to 178) but drops back to about 89 when I return to the slower speed. I have heard that your exercise heart rate should be 212 minus your age times 80 percent. That would be 101. Does my 170 for 25 seconds sound OK? -- E.N.W. ANSWER: No, that sounds too fast for an 86-year-old. The formula you mention is one frequently stated, and it isn’t particularly accurate, since there is a great deal of individual variation. But 170 is very fast for an 86-year-old. I wonder if it’s accurate. A pulse monitor, using electrical impulses, is the most accurate, but even these can be fooled by electrical interference. If it really is so fast, I would worry about an exerciseinduced tachycardia, and a visit to your doctor or cardiologist would be a good idea, especially if you are having symptoms of chest discomfort or shortness of breath. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Do peanuts (which are not nuts, but legumes) afford the same health benefits as nuts? -- A. ANSWER: Most of the studies showing benefits of nuts included peanuts as well. Peanuts probably have the same benefits as tree nuts. Unfortunately, many people are allergic to nuts, and many to peanuts. Those people can’t get the benefits of eating nuts, as it is unsafe, even lifethreatening on occasion. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www. rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Favorite Recipes Raspberry Swirled Lemon Cheesecake Bars
Ingredients For the Crust: 1½ cups graham cracker crumbs 4T butter For the Cheesecake: 16 ounces cream cheese- room temperature ½ cup sugar 2 tablespoons lemon juice Zest of a lemon 4 tablespoons milk 2 eggs- room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For the Raspberry Swirl 4 oz. of fresh raspberries (about ½ cup) 2 tablespoons sugar Instructions Preheat oven to 350F. Line an 8x8 baking pan with parchment paper, criss-crossing two rectangular pieces so there is an overhang on either side for easy lifting. Set aside. For the crust: In a medium sized bowl mix together the crumbs and butter with a spoon until moist. Press into the prepared pan and bake for about 10 minutes or until crust is set around the edges. Meanwhile make the filling: Beat together the white sugar, and cream cheese until smooth. Add the egg, milk, lemon juice, and vanilla and beat until smooth and creamy. Spread filling mixture over baked crust. For the Raspberry Purée: In a food processor or blender, purée the raspberries until smooth. Press through a fine mesh sieve, getting as much liquid out as possible. Discard the solids. Stir in the sugar. Dot the raspberry mixture over the filling and use a toothpick or skewer to swirl together. Bake for 30 minutes or until set around the edges and slightly jiggly in the center. Cool completely on a wire rack and then chill until cold before serving. Yield: 12 Bars

Senior Hunger Options
or perhaps a weekly gettogether lunch. You’ll make contacts at any of these events that can steer you to other local food programs. Contact the Council on Aging (www.ncoa.org) branch in your state for a full list of programs you can apply for. Or search online for “senior hunger resources” in your state. If you were turned down for food benefits, apply again, especially if your situation has changed in any way. If Meals on Wheels in your area isn’t taking new clients (many of them don’t have enough resources nowadays), get put on the waiting list anyway. Contact churches in your area to ask about senior meal programs. Ask your doctor for resources. Remember: It’s not only OK to ask for help when you need it, it’s imperative. To maintain your health, you need proper nutrition.
--There are 9 million seniors who are at risk for hunger every day in America, statistics show. If you’re a senior over age 60 and you don’t get enough to eat, there are options. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can provide an average $126 each month to go toward food. Check the government section of your phone book for the local office, or see www.fns.usda. gov/snap. In some states, as part of SNAP, you also might be eligible for The Senior Farmers Markets Nutrition (c) 2016 King Features Program (SFMNP), which Synd., Inc. will provide a coupon booklet that can be used at farmers markets to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. Information is available on the USDA.gov website. More and more senior centers are providing food programs. Ask about a Senior Grocery Program in Red Bird Times your state, or the local food Sponsored bank. The center also might host a monthly luncheon, Column

Taking any type of monetary payment from the Department of Veterans Affairs means that at any time, it can ask for the money back. If that happens, you’re at risk of having all your benefits canceled until the debt is paid. A Washington veteran recently went through the process of the VA trying to collect money it said he owed. Fortunately for him, he had kept every single piece of paper and receipt, and a copy of every letter he’d written to the VA. That inches-high stack of copies was helpful to the attorney he had to hire. One document was a letter he’d sent to the VA saying he was in prison but needed the money to take care of his family. The VA kept the payments coming. Once he got out, the VA suddenly wanted all its money back -- either in one big bite or they’d cut off all his benefits until that amount was repaid. Multiple letters sent by the attorney were ignored

until suddenly, without fanfare, the veteran received a waiver of the debt. Direct overpayment isn’t the only way a veteran can end up with cash that needs to be returned. Temporary 100-percent disability payments can be a problem when the illness goes into remission or is cured. The VA is supposed to ask for a follow-up medical exam to track progress, but often it doesn’t and the checks just keep arriving. At some point the VA realizes its error and demands all the money back. Another problem happens when a VA claim number is used to process one payment and a Social Security number is used to process an identical one. If you get monetary benefits from the VA, keep track of it. If it asks for any money back, go online to ww.va.gov/debtman, or call 800-827-0648. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
