Nora Moore Solomon Moore

Solomon p a s s e d away February 2, 2016 at Brookdale Retirement Home. She was born in Halifax County, Virginia on December 10, 1926. She was the daughter of Charles C. Moore and Ruby Moore of Sutherlin, Virginia. She grew up on the family tobacco farm and was the last surviving of nine children. She lived most of her life in Danville, Virginia. Nora was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, sung in the choir and taught Sunday school. Nora worked in a number of positions in the Danville community and retired as a supervisor at the Roman Eagle Nursing Home. Nora enjoyed singing and dancing and had a great sense of humor. She was always surrounded by friends and especially enjoyed her five grandchildren. She is survived by her son, James Michael Solomon, and his wife, Linda, of Greensboro, NC; her daughter, Terri Solomon Pettyjohn and her husband, John, of Lynchburg; grandchildren Andy, Jeffrey and Bryan Solomon, and Anna and Kemp Pettyjohn. Nora was married to Weldon Solomon, her husband of 66 years, who passed in 2013. A funeral service and celebration of life will be held Sunday, February 7, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Danville with the Rev. Charles Wickham officiating. Visitation will be held after the service in the church social hall. Interment will be held at 5:00 p.m. at Olive Branch United Methodist Church cemetery in Alton, Virginia. Afterward all friends are welcome to join the family at the farm in Nanny’s memory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Olive Branch United Methodist Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, or a charity of choice.

Sharon Reid Shelton Maurakis

Sharon Reid Shelton Maurakis of 564 Ferguson Road, Ringgold died on Friday, February 5, 2016 at her residence after a decline in health. Sharon was born in Danville on March 22, 1968, a daughter of Carolyn Sue Shelton. She attended Victory Baptist Church. She loved animals and loved to read mysteries, educational material and the Bible. Sharon attended Averett University and graduated from Business College in 1993. In 1990 she married Christopher “Chris” Marc Maurakis who survives of the home. Besides her husband and Mother she is survived by a sister, Robin E. Edwards of Danville and half-brother, Timothy Reid of Staunton, and her four legged special friend Shelley Ray. A graveside service will be held on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Reverend Terry St.

John, Pastor at Hollywood Baptist Church officiating. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Monday, February 8, 2016 from 12:30 to 1:30 P.M. and at other times will be at the residence, 564 Ferguson Road in Ringgold.

Harold Willard Carter

Mr. Harold Willard Carter of 1562 Ferry Road died on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health. Mr. Carter was born in Danville on January 26, 1936, a son of the late George Willard Carter and Edith Daniels Carter. He was a member of Ferry Road Friends Church for a number of years. Mr. Carter was a veteran of the United States Army. He and his wife enjoyed camping and after retirement spending winter months in Florida. Mr. Carter retired from Woodall Chevrolet from the auto body shop after forty years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Riverbend VFD. He was married on August 1, 1958 to Dorothy Eanes Carter, who survives of the home. Also surviving are three daughters; Kim C. Thompson and husband Bryon of Roanoke, Brenda C. Scearce and her partner Danny Barber of Danville and Tera C. Scearce and her husband Jeff of Danville, grandchildren; Kelly and Blake Thompson, Sarah, Rebecca, Benjamin and Molly Scearce and Marjorie Jones. Also a special niece, Cindy Hankins Walker. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. from the Townes Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Arnold Faw officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 from 5 to 8 P.M. Mattie Dodson Wilson

Our Lord’s arms were ext e n d e d welcoming Mattie Dodson Wilson, age 97, who passed away on February 5, 2016. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center since October 3, 2014. Mattie was born in Sutherlin, Va. on September 19, 1918 to her parents, the late Benjamin Franklin Dodson and the late Ida Chaney Dodson. She was married to Noell Eugene “Bud” Wilson, who predeceased her in 1973. She was predeceased by her brothers, Paul H. Dodson, and Sterling Dodson; and sisters, Julia D. Collie, and Pricie I. Dodson.

Surviving are her daughter, Cynthia W. Guill; and grandson, Paul E. Guill; her sister-in-law, Marie W. Brumfield, and former sonin-law, Tony Guill. She also leaves several nieces and nephews, and a very special friend, Etta Jennings. Mattie was a very faithful member of Afton Road Primitive Baptist church until failing health prevented her attending. She dearly loved her church and her church family. She retired from Virginia Bank & Trust Company of Danville. Mattie will be sorely missed by all who knew her, but her family and friends are assured that she is with her Lord and Savior, surrounded by his loving arms. Mr. Donald Wayne Shackelford, age 76, of 102 N a p l e s Street, Danville, VA, died on February 5, 2016 at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, NC. He was born on September 21, 1939, in Danville, VA, to the late John Billy Shackelford Sr. and Lossie Mae Holcomb Shackelford. Mr. Shackelford was the thirteenth child and the seventh son of 16 children. Mr. Shackelford was the owner/operator of the Jiffy Market. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Director and Deacon. Mr. Shackelford was also a member of the Masonic Order. He is survived by his loving wife Ann Scearce Shackelford, of the home; sons, Larry Wayne Shackelford and wife Cindy of Cary, NC, Randy Lynn Shackelford and wife Risé and Richard Kyle Shackelford and wife Jaci all of Danville, VA; brother, Lundy Shackelford and wife Donna of Newport, Fl.; sister, Gerolean Hardy of Danville, VA; grandsons, Cory and Spencer; and granddaughters, Crystal, Logan, McKaelin, Corbin, Raigan, Jaden, and Julia Shackelford. Lois Custer Hanvey Moore, age 92, of 2526 North Main St., Danville, VA, died on Sunday, February 07, 2016 at her residence. She was born on January 13, 1924, in Gretna, VA, to the late George Kelly Custer and Kate Hall Custer Guest. Mrs. Moore worked as a seamstress before her retirement and was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by sons, Kenneth Lee Hanvey of Blairs, VA and James Stanley Hanvey of Danville, VA; sisters, Earler C. Adkins of Pelham, NC, Louise C. Pearson, Carolyn C. Dalton, and Peggy C. Shivley all of Danville, VA; stepbrother, Charles M. Guest Jr. of Greensboro, NC, one grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents Mrs. Moore was predeceased by her husband, Sterling Moore; brother, George Onyx Custer; sister Geneva C. Adkins; and stepsister, Virginia Custer Bove. Edith Marie Brandon, 75, of 45 Bloomsbury Court, C h a p e l Hill, NC died Monday, February 1, 2016 at the UNC Hospital in Hillsborough, NC. Born February 19, 1940 in Sutherlin, VA, she was the daughter of the late Norman Vernell James and the late Rena Fuller James. She was married to the late Jerry Davis Brandon. Survivors include one daughter, Tammy Brandon of Chapel Hill, NC; three sons, Reginald Brandon of Surprise, AZ, Jerry D. Brandon, Jr. of Oklahoma City, OK and Darren Brandon of

Curtis Slade Loney

Curtis Slade Loney, 67, of 5764 Old Richmond Road, Danville, VA, died, Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center, Stuart, VA. Born September 13, 1948 in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Savannah and Nannie Waller Loney. He was married to Ethel Wimbush Loney, who survives. He was a Veteran of the United States Army. In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Temeka Turner of Richmond, VA; two step-sons, Edward Wimbush and Nathaniel Wimbush, both of Danville, VA; four sisters, Pearl Koger and Joyce Coleman of Danville, VA, Bessie Payne of Richmond, VA and Linda Smith of CA; two brothers, Larry Loney of New Mexico and O’Haril Loney of Blairs, VA and a host of other relatives and friends. Curtis Proscell Wade, 54, of 114 Park Lane, Martinsville, VA died on Saturday, February 6, 2016, unexpectedly. Born August 18, 1961, in Eden, NC, he was the son of the late William Thomas Wade and Shirley Taylor Wade Smith, who survives. The family will receive friends at the residence of

Virginia Jefferson

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Virginia Jefferson, 86, of 102 Ashlawn Dr., Danville, Va. on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born in Pelham, NC on March 15, 1929 to the late Blanche McGuire Estes and the late Wilson Kemp Estes and was married to her beloved husband Louis Robert Jefferson for 64 years before he predeceased her in March 2012. Mrs. Jefferson retired after 30 years as an Inspector for Dan River Mills, Inc. She was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church and was a member of the Fellowship Class of the church. She loved reading novels in her free time. Survivors include two daughters, Vickie J. Love and husband Tim of Blairs, Va., and Janet J. Willett and husband Brian of Danville, two sons, Robert Michael Jefferson, and Mark Louis Jefferson and wife Debbie, all of Danville, two brothers, Clyde Estes of Hampton, Va. and Warren Kemp Estes of Woodvine, GA. Mrs. Jefferson is also survived by seven grandchildren, Ginny J. Wrbanich, Bobby Lee Jefferson and fiancé Nicole, Michael Jefferson, Adam Jefferson, April Love, Ethan Hawker and Evan Hawker as well as two great-grandchildren, Jayden Wrbanich and Kaylee Wrbanich. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Jefferson was predeceased by a sister, Marie Estes Moore, two brothers, James Leonard Estes and Marvin Wilson Estes, and a daughterin-law Pat Jefferson. She is also survived by her step-father, Wayne Nelson Owens, Sr. Shannon was full of life with a beautiful smile, and she loved spending time with her family and friends. Ethel B. Turner, Danville Va., born May 20, 1934 to the late John Thomas Simmons and Eva Huffman Simmons, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She lived most of her life in Danville, where she was employed for 24 years at Dan River Mills. On Dec. 19, 1960, she married Otis Lambert Turner Jr., who preceded her in death. She was of Baptist Faith. She is survived by three children, Brenda Burke Beale, of Danville, Mike Burke (Beverly) of Georgia, and Deborah Gunn, of Providence, N.C.; three sisters, Hazel Johnson (Nathan) of Dry Fork, Va., Velma Jones (Wayne) of Yanceyville, N.C., and Francis Rice (Keith) of Ringgold, Va.; six grandchildren, Lisa Powell (Kenneth) of Danville, Timothy Beale (Leslie) of Tennessee, Jason Leftwich (Torie) of South Carolina, Wesley Burke of Georgia, Britney Ayers of Arkansas, and Brett Rice (Dianne) of Georgia; as well as 13 greatgrandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Turner was predeceased by two sisters Lucille Phillips and Nellie Robertson. Judith Montaree Thomas “Monty” Blair, 85, formerly of Raintree Rd., Danville, Va., passed a w a y Wednesday, February 3, 2016. She was born December 24, 1930 in Westminster, S.C. to the late Nell Jones Thomas and the late Edgar B. Thomas. Ms. Blair worked in customer service with Southeastern Associates. She was a member of North Main Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class. Ms. Blair is survived by her daughters, Robin B. Francis and husband, Chuck of Danville, and Cathy Briggs and husband, Rick of Leasburg, N.C.; her son, Rick Blair and wife, Vickie of Statesville, N.C.; her brothers, E.B. Thomas of Central, S.C., and “Chink” Thomas of Altavista, Va.; her grandchildren, Richard Blair, Jason Blair, Blair Briggs Roberts, Beth Briggs Holt, Judith Francis Williams, Jackie Francis Barts, and Charlotte Francis Adkins; and her great-grandchildren, Gabriella Blair, Ian Blair, Adam Blair, Raleigh Blair, Reagan Blair, LilliCate Roberts, Briggs Holt, and Charles Garland Barts. Carole Owen East, 73, of 541 High View Lane, Chatham, Va. passed from this life Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va. She was born February 27, 1942 in Pelham, N.C. to the late Leslie Mae Myers Pruitt and the late Thomas Owen. She is survived by her husband, Booker Edward East. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. East worked at Dan River Mills for 42 years in 4b Weave. She loved crocheting. Mrs. East was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to her husband, Mrs. East is survived by her daughters, Cindy Dillion and husband, Russell of Sutherlin, Va., and Carolyn Jones and husband, Leroy of Ringgold, Va.; her sons, Roosevelt Holly, Jr. of Blairs, Va., Dewey East and wife, Sara of Chatham, and Hughie East and wife, Jennifer of Roanoke; and her

brother, Walter Owen; as well as thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. East was predeceased by three sisters, two brothers, and one granddaughter. Hazel Martin “Birdie” Adams

Hazel Martin “Birdie” Adams, of 400 Seeland Rd., Danville, Va., went to be with her Lord and Savior Friday, February 5, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born October 6, 1957 in Danville to the late James Martin and the late Mary Carter Martin. Mrs. Adams was married to Gerald Adams. “Birdie” was an assistant teacher for CIC Head Start, Inc. for 22 years before retiring due to her decline in health. She was a member of Christ Temple Apostolic Church. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Adams is survived by her brother, Clarence James Martin, Sr. and her special friend, Ricky Chaney, both of Danville. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Adams was predeceased by her sister, Sandra Clements and her nephew, Marco Banks. A memorial service will be held 12:00 noon, Friday February 12, 2016 at Christ Temple Apostolic Church, 180 Kentuck Road, Danville, with Elder Carl Clement officiating. Jewel Wright Yates

Jewel Wright Yates, 85, p a s s e d peacefully surrounded by family on February 2, 2016. She was born October 1, 1930 to the late Jesse Crockett Wright and Martha Crabb Wright. On July 1, 1950 she married Loy Sanford Yates, Jr. Jewel leaves behind a legacy of

love and her strong Christian faith. Jewel worked for Dan River Mills, Inc. until she had the pleasure of becoming a homemaker and farmer’s wife. Jewel was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church for 54 years where she was the President of the UMW, a Sunday school teacher, member of the choir, and in the choir quartet. She is survived by two loving children, Sandra Y. Owen (Michael) and Jesse Scott Yates (Annette) and five grandchildren Jason M. Owen (Joy), Justin L. Owen (Kelly), Jessica L. Webb (Jeremy), Stephanie A. Giles, and Samantha L. Giles. Great grandchildren include Grace Owen, Natalie Owen, William Owen, and Jane Owen. She has one surviving brother, Buford C. Wright. In addition to her parents and husband, Jewel is predeceased by seven siblings and a great-granddaughter, Tessa Jewell Owen. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 5, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church with interment at Highland Burial Park. Oscar Mabry Criswell, Jr., 86, of 2848 Blairmont D r i v e , Danville, VA, died Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in his health for one year. He had been in the hospital for the past ten days. Born on December 5, 1929 in Avon, Mississippi, he was a son of the late Oscar Mabry Criswell, Sr. and Lois Clemons Criswell. Mr. Criswell moved to Danville in 1967 with the U.S. Gypsum Company, where he worked as a foreman in the finishing department. He retired in 1984, when he opened and operated Criswell Wood Products until 2005. He was of the Christian faith. He loved fishing, attending antique auctions, and being with his friends. Nothing brought him greater joy than his children and grandchildren. He was a loving husband,

father and Pa-Paw. He never met a stranger and always had a smile to brighten our day. He was kind and giving, and will be sadly missed by all. Heaven has a brighter star today. We miss you Daddy. On July 31, 1949 he married Frances Buffington Criswell, who survives. In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by five children, Sheila C. Manasco, and husband Carl, of Danville; Oscar Mabry Criswell III, and wife Nancy, of Jefferson, GA; Barbara C. Louhoff, of Dry Fork, VA; Grace C. Womack, and husband Charles, of Greensboro, NC; and Scott Criswell, and wife Ashly, of Danville; a sister, Helen Haney, of Hattiesburg, MS; four brothers, Terry N. Criswell, of Valdosta, GA; Bernard Criswell, of Greenville, MS; Ronnie Criswell, of Hot Springs Village, AR; and Norman Criswell, of Greenville, MS; twelve grandchildren, Jon Henderson, Rick Manasco, Todd Criswell, Kellee Wilkerson, Ryan Louhoff, Adam Louhoff, Alex Womack, Eric Womack, Andrew Womack, Caroline Womack, Mary Kathryn Criswell, and Peyton Criswell; and 10 great grandchildren. He was predeceased in death by a grandson, Brian Christopher Louhoff, a sonin-law, Richard Louhoff, two brothers and two sisters. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the Central Boulevard Church of God from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. A graveside service will follow in Highland Burial Park at 11:30 A.M. with the Reverend John H. Meadows officiating. At other times the family will be at the residence. Also, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to the Central Blvd Church of God, 235 Hairston St., Danville, VA 24540; or Whitmell United Methodist Church, 121 Sunset Drive, Dry Fork, VA 24549. Vera Evelyn Farthing Bradner

Vera Evelyn Farthing Bradner, 92, died on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center after being in declining health for several months. Mrs. Bradner was born in West Virginia on January 15, 1924, daughter of the late Lawrence Farthing and the late Lottie Brown Farthing. She spent all of her life in the Pittsylvania County area where she worked at Durham Hosiery until her retirement. She

was of the Baptist faith. She was married to Lester T. Bradner, who died on November 10, 2004. Survivors include, son, Tyrone Lester Bradner and his wife Faye of Danville, VA; grandchildren, Denise Clay and husband Dean, Tyrone (Dink) Bradner, Jr. and Brad Bradner and wife Kelci; great grandson, Jason Clay; great granddaughter Anna Claire Bradner; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in Highland Burial Park with the Reverend Carl Burger officiating. The family will be at the residence of her son, Mr. Tyrone Bradner, at 247 Lansbury Drive, Danville, VA 24540. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is respectfully serving the Bradner family.

Ann Shelton Reid Crouch

Ann Shelton Reid Crouch, age 81 of 210 Withers Circle, Danville, VA, died on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at her residence after a decline in health for the past three months. She was born in Ringgold, VA, on March 3, 1934, a daughter of the late Willie Bennett Crouch and Mattie Esther Hutcherson Crouch. She lived most of her life in Danville, VA where she worked at Dan River Mills as a clerk in the cloth store until her retirement after 31 years. On April 3, 1982 she married Albert Crouch who survives. Mrs. Crouch was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church. In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a daughter, Carol Ann Reid Wood (Fred) of Wilson, NC; a step-daughter: Kimberly Crouch Ganey (Dennis), of Semora, NC; a step-son, Kipling Crouch, of Danville, VA; a grandson, Stuart Wood (Ronnie); step-granddaughters Sarah Ganey Williams (Van) and Erin Ganey Hill (John); one brother, Burton R. Shelton (Hazel); and a number of special nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Vickie Jo Reid Browe, seven brothers and two sisters. Funeral Services will be conducted on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Reverend David Turbyfill officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to Schoolfield Baptist Church.
