SoVA Center of Manufacturing Excellence Offers First Training in Mechatronics South Boston, VA--Manufacture your future in Mechatronics through the SoVA Center of Manufacturing Excellence (SoVA CME). Beginning March 7th, SoVA CME will offer an accelerated training program leading to industry recognized Mechatronics Certification. The term “mechatronics” encompasses a broad range of technical disciplines including mechanics, electronics, control systems, and computer terms. The 13-week training program will feature extensive hands-on instruction in each of these areas. Mechatronics certified instructors with a combined 50+ years of industrial experience will teach the classes, and work with students to develop the skills needed to find employment as an industrial maintenance technician or machine operator. According to Scarlett Brandon, SoVA CME Program/Marketing Coordinator, individuals in these careers enjoy salaries ranging from $35,000–$55,000, depending on the locality and size of the industry. “Mechatronics certification offers a path to good jobs that exist today for qualified individuals,” Brandon said. SoVA CME Mechatronics training will be held at the Innovation Center, on the campus of the Southern VA Higher Education Center (SVHEC). To learn more about the Industrial Maintenance/Mechatronics program and career opportunities, individuals should attend an upcoming information session. Upcoming information sessions will be Friday, Feb.19th at 10:00am Tuesday, Feb. 23rd at 10:00am and 5:30pm Thursday, Feb. 25th at 10:00am and 5:30pm Monday, Feb. 29th at 10:00am and 5:30pm Wednesday, Mar. 2nd at 10:00am and 5:30pm Friday, Mar. 4th at 10:00am Interested individuals should contact Scarlett Brandon, SoVA CME Program/Marketing Coordinator at 572.5473 or email HYPERLINK “mailto:scarlettbrandon@svhec.org” scarlettbrandon@svhec.org to register for an information session. A Horse Named Marylou A husband was sitting quietly reading his paper one morning, peacefully enjoying himself, when his wife sneaks up behind him and whacks him on the back of the head with a huge frying pan. “What the heck was that for!?!” he asked. She replies, “I found a piece of paper in your pants’ pocket with the name Marylou written on it…” “Oh, Dear! Remember two seeks ago when I went to the horse races? Well, Marylou was the name of one of the horses I placed a bet on.”

We Do Snow Removal, Too!

The explanation seemed to appease her, and she leaves the room to go about her business. Three days later, the man is again sitting in his chair reading the morning paper. His wife abruptly hangs up the telephone and once again, whacks him on the back of the head with a huge frying pan. This time… much harder. “What the heck did I do wrong this time!?!” he asked, rubbing the swollen knot on his noggin. She answered, “Your horse just called!!” Remember to LAUGH OFTEN and to SMILE EVEN MORE!!

Dude, Retire!

--I’ll never forget the first time I met Peyton Manning. He was on the phone, and I had just snapped a photo of him in the most annoying way possible: I had my trusty Minolta set on the anti-redeye flash setting, the kind where the flash pops over and over again until your subject gets annoyed and stops smiling. And I’ll never forget what he said to me: “Dude ... what are you doing?” That’s the same day I learned that photographers can’t just walk up to the Colts’ sideline and stick a camera in their quarterback’s face, even with the anti-redeye setting. What can I say? We were both rookies that season. I would later graduate to Kodak, Nikon and Cannon cameras, and Manning would go on to have a pretty decent career, too. The first time I really started paying attention to Manning’s career was during his tenure at Tennessee. It’s funny to hear people knock his arm-strength now, because while he was in college, he was a straight-up gunslinger of a quarterback. I remember Steve Spurrier taunting him before big games. Nowadays, we all know not to overly criticize college players, ostensibly for the reason that they are kids and amateurs. Over the years, at Indianapolis and Denver, we’ve had the distinct pleasure of watching Manning all but dominate the league. He wasn’t invincible, as his two Super Bowl losses proclaim, but he was the

best in the game. He holds every record that matters: wins (200), yards from scrimmage, touchdowns and MVPs. He was the funniest athlete ever to host “Saturday Night Live”; he’s made “Omaha” the replacement term for “hike” in backyards across the country; and he gave the chicken parm sandwich its own, long-overdue jingle. That, right there, is worthy of considerable praise (and consideration for dinner tonight). After winning the Super Bowl, his gratuitous beer name-dropping aside (no, he wasn’t paid to say that, but he does own a share of the brand’s beer distributorship in Louisiana, and one surmises he made his money back), his not stating the obvious ... that he was retiring ... was a class move. In doing so (or by not doing so) he kept the focus, rightly, on his team’s victory. Should Manning retire? Of course he should. He is playing the most violent game in the world (next to fighting and hurling). He has nothing left to prove, and he leaves as the world recognized as the best ever at his position. Granted, I would still pick Joe Montana to lead my team if my life depended on it, but I think Manning catches my drift. You don’t get chances like this in life -- to leave on top -- you earn them. If he were to come back next year, rest assured, I’d break out the old Minolta. But this time I’d be the one asking what he was doing, dude. Tremors Aren’t Always Sign of Parkinson’s

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with essential tremor. Propranolol 10 mg has not helped. Sometimes I can write and eat with no shaking, but other times the shaking is so bad that the food falls off the fork or I cannot read my printing or writing. If I drink a beer, it seems to relax me enough that in five minutes I can write or eat quite normally nearly every time. I’ve been told that it doesn’t appear to be Parkinson’s. Any suggestions will be enormously appreciated. -- J.N. ANSWER: Essential tremor, sometimes called benign familial tremor, is common. Often, one has a family history of tremor. It is not Parkinson’s disease; however, it isn’t always “benign” in that, for some people, it can be disabling, preventing a person from not only writing, but, as in your case, activities of daily living such as eating. Alcohol has long been known to reduce the tremor temporarily, but it must be taken cautiously, since regular use will diminish its effectiveness, requiring higher doses for effectiveness -- and, as I have written many times, excess alcohol is a major cause of many medical problems. Occasional use with meals is reasonable. Other effective treatments for essential tremor include anti-epilepsy medications such as primidone, gabapentin and topiramate. Unfortunately, all of these can have side effects, so they are best prescribed by an expert, such as a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders. For serious essential tremor not responsive to medications, deep brain stimulation (via electrodes placed surgically) is effective. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2009, and she is taking Namenda and Aricept to help slow the advancement of the disease. I am writing because she complains of being cold all the time. She and my father keep the temperature in their house at 80 degrees, and my mother wears winter clothes, a coat and a blanket in the house. She sometimes sweats through the clothes, but we can’t persuade her to remove any layers. The house is uncomfortably hot for anyone else, and yet she says she is cold. Her general practitioner has said that this is part of her disease. Is there anything else you have heard of that could explain this? -- C.L. ANSWER: I have seen a lot of people with dementia of all kinds, but I haven’t personally seen this degree of intolerance to cold. Her doctor may have more experience than I do, but I didn’t find much about it written in the medical literature. Every person is different, and it’s possible this is just part of how the dementia is affecting her. However, cold intolerance to this degree suggests some alternate possibilities. The most important and likely is low thyroid levels, which can also cause a condition that looks like dementia and would certainly make dementia worse. I bet her doctor has checked for it. If not done recently, she should have her thyroid level checked. Other, less-common causes include Addison’s disease (inability to make appropriate amounts of steroid hormones), iron deficiency, anemia from any cause and severe malnutrition. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. “Socialism, Scripture, and Common Sense” It is a bit of a discouragement to see that, in the current race for president, the failed, discredited, and damaging doctrine of socialism is being regarded favorably. It is even more discouraging to realize that many decades of indoctrination have made socialism much more than a passing fad but have actually elevated it to a level of respectability that it does not deserve.

I write a faith column. But the book I have devoted my life to is not just spiritual, but also incredibly practical. The Bible will teach you how to be saved and will also deal with subjects like intimacy, gambling, work, rest, nutrition, and even good government. And it is the subject of good government that is currently on my mind. Scripture gives an illustration of what many erroneously view as socialism. Acts 4:32 says, “And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.” The item that makes this anything but socialism is a little thing called “choice.” This arrangement was utterly voluntary, there was no coercion to it at all. It was also very temporary, but that is a matter for another day. The salient point is that nothing in solid Scriptural hermeneutics gives so much as a fig leaf of respectability to the naked wickedness of socialism. Merriam Webster defines socialism as 1) any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods 2) a system of society or group living in which there is no private property, a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state 3) a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done. Those definitions make certain tenets of socialism clear. Socialism destroys the right to private property, uses the sword of government to coerce everyone to participate, doles out to people what the central planners think they need, and is merely a stepping stone to eventual communism. This utopian theory has been tried and failed miserably, many times. Simply put, theft is still theft even if it is legally voted on, and people who find themselves on the other end of the theft do not appreciate it.

If socialism were applied to other areas of life, it would perhaps be more clearly understood for the evil that it is. What if, for instance, we applied it to women? Perhaps we should “redistribute” the attractive wives of stars and athletes. Why should some people be “more privileged” than others? What if we were to set up a central control that would dole out attractive women to all men equally? Can you imagine the howls of protest? “Government should never take a woman from a man and hand her over to another man, he worked hard to earn her love, leave them alone!” And that is correct. But the same government that has no business taking a woman from one man and giving her to another man, or a good grade from a hard working student and handing it out to a lesser student, also has no business taking a dollar or anything else from one man and “redistributing” it to another. Private property rights are taught all throughout the Bible and are at the very foundation of our Constitutional Republic. America did not become great by a philosophy of “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” America became great in an extremely short period of time because people were free to aspire to greatness without fear of jealous others voting themselves a generous portion of the fruits of their labors. Proverbs 10:4 put it this way, “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.” The socialist Bible, if there is such a thing, would probably render that verse this way: “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but rather than teach the slack hand to be diligent, rather than giving him the assurance that he can be one of the many rags to riches accounts our history is filled with, we will teach him how to use government to redistribute the wealth of those who were diligent. Rather than directing everyone upward toward greatness, we will force everyone downward into mediocrity.” One last thing. Jesus himself said, “the poor you have with you always.” But in America, capitalism, not socialism, has produced a nation where even our poor normally carry cell phones, eat better than most of the rest of the world, live in air conditioned dwellings, and have enough money left over to pay for the cable or satellite tv that is carrying the liberal siren songs that are promoting our journey toward the rocky crags of a Marxist society.

PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt

You can install a sturdy bar toward the back of the closet and hang the bags by their handles, hooked onto the shower curtain rings.” -T.I. in Michigan * Too much paper? Here is an idea to decrease what you store: First, look up the instruction manual for any items you purchase, and save them to a file on your computer rather than keeping the paper manual. Then scan your receipts and save them with the manuals. If you don’t have a scanner, take a good-quality digital photo of the receipt, and make sure that the numbers are readable.

The cord goes right out the back of the nightstand and all the cords are out of sight. This also works in an end table with a drawer for your living room or entryway.

required to have a fulltime, onsite service coordinator and a parttime, onsite wellness nurse to make assessments and coordinate care and support services. The program would be a test to see if initial plans work and to evaluate the outcomes of the demonstration. A model program was started in Vermont a few years ago, and there are many success stories to show the effectiveness: An isolated senior who missed doctor appointments can now get rides and has learned to get around independently; another with physical disabilities has been given referrals to physical therapists; a depressed senior was recruited as a volunteer and has become more social, and so much more. These are the types of services we need if we’re to stay in our homes. Those development owners who want to apply have until April 18 to do so. See www. grants.gov, and look for FR-5900-N-22. Room-to-Room Home Additions Add quality and comfort to your favorite rooms

(Family Features) When considering a home renovation, think outside the box for design inspiration and setting the overall tone. With homeowners staying in their homes longer due to the economy, renovations should focus on usability and personal style. For those homeowners looking to sell, the market is still very much a buyer’s space, so quality additions that increase value are certainly top of mind. Luckily, there’s no need knock down walls or move plumbing to make an impact - simply start with small, quality updates to pack a dramatic punch for less money. Here are some ways to add quality and comfort within the different spaces of your home: Entryway As the first thing visitors see, your front door should always provide a good impression, reflecting the beauty that emanates throughout your home. With doors, matching the exterior and interior creates a flow into outdoor living spaces. Using doors as a part of the overall aesthetic can also allow for some creativity with glass accents or bold color choices. Choose a reliable door manufacturer, such as Masonite, that offers a wide breadth of finishes and styles using wood, steel and fiberglass.

Favorite Recipes

Living Room Add decorative touches to your living room with repurposed items found around the house. Fill a decorative pitcher or an old tin watering can with fresh flowers from the garden to add elegance to your coffee table. Wrap assorted globe lighting fixtures or mason jars with wire and hang them in a grouping to display votive candles. For an eclectic and shabby chic feel, turn a vintage drawer on end to use as a bookshelf or bring in an old wooden crate to use as a side table.

Easy Oven Baked Spicy Chicken Tacos

Kitchen Refreshing your kitchen doesn’t require a major update. Add a new color to existing cabinetry by refinishing or addinga new coat of paint. Would you like to add a glossy shine to the kitchen? Simply apply mesh-back glass tile to fit the dimensions of cabinet door panels. Finish the update with a modern touch by replacing outdated hardware with the many new, stylish options available. Bathroom From tiles and countertops to faucets and showerheads, the options are endless for bathroom updates. With wall-hung, stand-alone or pedestal styles, your choices for a new vanity are no exception. During a renovation, some homeowners begin their project by focusing on other bathroom elements like those mentioned above. But starting with the addition of a new vanity, like one of the many beautiful options from Ronbow, will set the stage for your bathroom and provide a focal point for the other design elements. Rooms throughout From the master bedroom to the hall entryway, hardwood floors provide the ultimate in beauty and ambiance. Refinishing gives your existing tired, worn out floors an instant upgrade that shines from room to room. By focusing on a few quality updates, you can add beauty and comfort to your home to be enjoyed for many years or add value in a competitive housing market. Ingredients 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 pound cooked chicken, shredded 1 (1 ounce) packet Old El Paso Hot & Spicy Taco Seasoning 1/2 cup onion, diced 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomato, drained 1 (4.5 ounce) can Old El Paso Chopped Green Chiles 10 Old El Paso Stand and Stuff Taco Shells 1/2 (16 ounce) can Old El Paso Refried Beans 2 cups Mexican Blend Cheese, shredded Toppings such as Old El Paso sliced Jalapenos, sour cream, salsa, chopped cilantro, shredded lettuce, or any of your favorite taco toppings! Instructions Preheat oven to 400F. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with nonstick spray and set aside. Heat olive oil over medium heat in a medium skillet. Add onion to skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the onion is translucent and fragrant. Stir in the chicken, taco seasoning, tomatoes, and green chiles. Stir to combine fully. Reduce to simmer and allow to cook for 5-8 minutes. Place the taco shells in the baking dish, standing up. I was able to fit 10 taco shells in the dish by adding 2 on each side. Spoon 1 tablespoon of beans into the bottom of each taco shell. Top with the chicken mixture, almost to the top of each shell. Sprinkle each shell generously with shredded cheese, the more the better! Bake for 12-14 minutes or until cheese is fully melted and the edges of the shells are browned. Remove from the oven and top with your favorite items such as jalapenos, sour cream, cilantro, and salsa. Enjoy! ***TIPS: Be sure to drain the tomatoes completely, this will help the taco shells to not get soggy while baking! If you prefer your tacos not spicy, just omit the green chilis and use regular Old El Paso Taco Seasoning. Just as delicious!
