Local Man, Jeremy Stratton, Raises Money for Special Olympics If you’ve been at our Danville Sam’s Club recently, then you may have seen a very special local man, Jeremy Stratton, raising money for the Special Olympics. Jeremy wasn’t just manning a table with a donation jar, he was raising money by sharing his love of music, singing and dancing, and spreading his happiness to those who crossed his path. We had to know more about Jeremy, so we asked his biggest fan, his mom, Cathy to tell us more about him. Here’s his story, as told by her. Jeremy Stratton was born on September 22, 1977. He weighed alb, 14oz and was 21.5 inches long, a perfect baby boy. Jeremy walked and talked early. He could count, recite his ABC’s and numbers by the age of 3. In March of 1982 at 4 years old, Jeremy’s life, as well as mine, was changed. Jeremy had a simple virus, he could not hold down anything and his temperature rose to 102 degrees. After going to the doctor several times over the course of a few days and taking several medications, the doctor felt that Jeremy needed to go to the emergency room and get fluids, then he would be ready to go home. We left the doctor’s office and crossed the street to the hospital to get an IV, then planned to go home. Jeremy was afraid of the big white bed, so they got me a chair that rocked from the nursery, and I held and rocked him while fluids ran through his body. His fever kept spiking, and they were constantly working on him. If they took him from my arms, I had to have my hand on him so he wouldn’t get upset. I was terrified, but I had to be strong for Jeremy. All of a sudden, his body started shaking and his eyes rolled back in his head. I started screaming for the nurse. They took him from my arms and started working on him yet again. Before this virus and seizure, Jeremy was a very healthy boy, never experiencing any health problems, but all of a sudden, I was terrified for the life of my child. After a week in the hospital and several diagnoses, Jeremy got to come home, but his life would not be what it was before. I was advised that it would take a lot to take care of him, and the doctors never thought he would walk, or talk again. They advised me to put him into an institution. No way!! We had to go through diapers again. We had to learn to get our balance so we could learn to walk again. After several years of speech therapy, Jeremy was talking again at 7 1/2. No one thought he’d be able to grasp everything all over again. I bought flash cards and work books. Along with the special education teachers, I was trying to make Jeremy understand. Jeremy grew tired of the flash cards, so the doctor told me to get him a Nintendo, as it would help with hand and eye coordination. Games that were sing along, counting, or anything that would help him learn became a way of life. He loved the games, and he was slowly learning! By the age of 8, we could tell he couldn’t see very well. Every eye doctor that I took him to told me that he wasn’t intelligent enough to tell them what they needed to know to put glasses on him. Finally, after seeing six eye doctors, we got a referral to see an eye surgeon. Dr. Harvey immediately saw the problem. Jeremy was born with cataracts behind

... continued on page 2

2 • Piedmont ShopperŠ • February 19th - 25th, 2015 ... continued from front page article Jeremy Stratton both eyes, and was continuously having seizures in his eyes. Since the cataracts had never grown or moved, there was nothing he could do but treat with medication, and see if that would help. Jeremy was fitted with glasses that were 3 inches thick. They were so heavy that they had to be strapped on. He looked so pitiful, but these glasses helped him see up to three feet! After going to school until he was 21, Jeremy graduated with a Special Diploma. He can read and write simple things, and now works in a sheltered workshop. He’s been there for 15 years! Jeremy’s favorite thing is to read the headlines in the morning paper. He’s always had a love for music, and before his life changing seizure, sang “Elviraâ€? with my daddy’s band in the Festival in the Park when he was four. Music could always be heard blasting so he could listen to the music and try to sing along. So, praying that it would help him, we started the music again. Most of the time he went to bed listening to it, and it comforted him. When Jeremy was 16, I married Jeremy’s step father, Ralph. Ralph had toured with many stars, and played drums on the Grand Old Opry every Saturday night. He set up drums for Jeremy, and worked with him him to see if it would help with coordination. Jeremy would play for hours. He’d crank up the boom box and play drums and sing along with the music. He’s accomplished so much. When I look at him, I don’t see a disabled adult. I see a very happy man. Yes, he will always believe in Santa Claus, and no, he can’t see very well and can only do simple things. He can sing, he’s learned to do the waltz, two step, and the twist! He’s a good worker, and never has a sad day. Being a “Special Childâ€? doesn’t mean you sit in a corner and wait to die. When Jeremy first got sick, my grandfather (who I call Peaches) told me that I could either sit and feel sorry for myself and Jeremy, or I could do something about it. He told me that God only gives special children to special people, and that one day I would understand what a blessing he was. He said “You’ve got this, you can handle it.â€? Well, the road has not always been easy, and there are more cruel adults than there are children. But Jeremy can do anything that we can do, it just takes a little longer. I’ll never give up on him!! God is good all the time. It seems most people are afraid of Special adults, but they shouldn’t be. They have the same feelings and emotions as everyone else. They have a pure love with their heart. Thanks to everyone for loving Jeremy, he is my blessing. Special thanks to Michelle Eakins, Rob Holder, Kim Tillman, Steve Chafatelli, Lisa Conner, and Jason White for always giving Jeremy the utmost respect and believing in him. Also thanks to the door greeters for asking for donations daily, including Charlotte Oliver and others at Sam’s Club, who helped make this dream come true, for a very special cause. Jeremy raised a total of $5,325.20 for the Special Olympics!

Dear Boredom, I just wanted to remind you, we broke up a long time ago. I see that you recently told an Internet blogger we were still together. Like I said when I moved on; it’s not me, it’s you. It is true, we were together once, but since then, I’ve grown a lot and I feel am better than ever without you; plus I saw on Facebook you cheated on me often. Again, I have moved on and I am sorry you still seem to enjoy putting us together in the eyes of the Internet. I just hate that your image is so badly injured when you tell the world we are together and it’s painfully obvious there is nothing about me that says “I’m with Boring. Apparently all of the pictures on Facebook and Instagram of my trail rides, river adventures, concerts, festivals and races still don’t get it through your thick head that we are done. Just in case I need to tell you again; Danville and Boredom are a thing of the past. I have moved on. I would love if your friends who continually want to put us together would come out and spend a little time with me; I think they will see how bad you were for me and how much better my life is now that you are gone. It must be embarrassing for you not to be able to associate with me anymore. I knew all along I was your better half. When we were together, it was all about you. Now it’s my time and I need my space. Certainly, you can’t believe everything you read on the Internet. Never yours, Danville

-Q: I think this season of “Portlandia might be the funniest one yet. Please tell me I’ll get to enjoy new episodes for years to come. -- Paula T., via email A: I am happy to tell you that you’ll get at least two more seasons of funny from Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein. IFC announced that it has picked up the hit comedy for seasons six and seven, each encompassing 10 half-hour episodes. *** Q: I wanted to ask about two ABC shows that I very much miss: “Red Widow and “666 Park Avenue. I enjoyed both shows, especially the eye candy in “Red Widow, and wondered if there’s any chance they’ll be aired again -Marsha R., Naples, Florida A: Both ABC series premiered in the 201213 season -- “666 Park Avenue in September and “Red Widow as a midseason replacement -- to much hullabaloo and fanfare; however, both were canceled due to low ratings. Of the two series, “Red Widow is available on DVD, in case you’re feeling nostalgic and want to relive the drama and intrigue ... and eye candy. *** Q: I truly hope the writers and producers of “Galavant know what a superb show it is. I laugh so hard and watch each episode several times since there are so many jokes and bits every second. I thank them for this wonderful production. If it comes out on DVD, I will buy it! -Nancy M., Venice, Florida A: I know a lot of people who feel the way you do, Nancy. And they are all hoping for a second season, as I’m sure you are.

Fred Armisen If anything, it’s just nice to have the option to watch a series that is inventive and unique, and there really is no other show out there like it right now. I believe in rewarding people for thinking outside the box, and I hope ABC does too. While “Galavantâ€? started out really strong, it then slipped in numbers as the limited series went on. However, since it is a limited series (meaning each season has fewer episodes than a normal series, and it can air at any time during WKH VHDVRQ DV D SODFH ÂżOOHU or replacement), its low numbers won’t necessary EH QDLOV LQ LWV FṘQ ,ÂśG VWLOO place this show very much on the bubble. Does that mean the franchise will be ending? -- DeeDee R., via email A: The franchise will go on -- but with a new Spidey. Like Tobey Maguire before him, Andrew is moving on to other things, and a new (not-yet-cast) actor will take his place. The premiere date for the new “SpiderManâ€? movie has been set for July 28, 2017. Because of this, “Thor: Ragnorakâ€? will now open in November 2017, since Peter Parker and company have taken his release date. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. In my seminars on improving your credit score one of the topics I discuss is co-signing loans. My advice is simple‌don’t do it! I have discussions with people in this situation all the time. Many times it is after the fact that they have co-signed. The person that has taken out the loan and beneďŹ ted from the loan is now not paying the loan so guess what‌the co-signer is left with the debt. Not only is the co-signer equally responsible for the debt but any late payment history will affect their credit as well. If any legal action is taken it will be taken against the co-signer also. Protect your credit‌don’t co-sign!

address customers respectfully and, when responding to emails or engaging in online chats, write professional responses that steer clear of informal language. Customers often understand that a product may malfunction, but poor customer service is inexplicable and will reduce the likelihood that a customer will become a repeat customer. * Commission a better website. Today's consumers often rely on the Internet to connect with a business. Consumers may want to peruse a restaurant's menu before booking a reservation or view a retailer's online catalogue before walking into the store. A good website can be a tremendous asset to a business, while a bad website can drive customers away before they spend so much as a dollar. A good website is informative and easy to navigate. Restaurant owners should include some photos of their establishment on the site to show customers the type of ambiance they can expect when dining. The site's URL should include only the name of the restaurant, which makes it easy for potential customers to find the site when using a search engine. If the name you prefer is already taken by a similarly named establishment in another region, then include your state or city in the URL, such as JoesPizzaNY.com. If you are not skilled at building websites, hire a professional firm to build thesite for you. Such an investment will likely pay for itself sooner rather than later and will increase the chances that customers' first impressions are good ones. * Establish a social media presence. Another way to rehabilitate or improve a business' image is to establish a social media presence that connects the business with existing and potential customers. Use the various social media platforms in different ways. A Facebook page can explain the history of the company, while Twitter can be used to alert followers to special promotions or events. Social media can also be used to solicit customer feedback, which can be used to ensure you are meeting your customers' needs and adapting to meet those needs when necessary. A business that listens to and actively engages its customers is more likely to have a positive image than one that does not, and social media can be the tool businesses use to connect with those customers. A poor first impression can be difficult to overcome, but companies can take several steps to regain consumer trust. TF145191

R E C I PE S

Many people are familiar with the conventional wisdom about first impressions. When you only have one chance to make a first impression, it's a good idea to make the most of that opportunity. But not every first impression inspires fond memories, and while erasing a bad first impression might be impossible, that does not mean a second impression can't trump its predecessor. That's especially true for businesses. Businesses typically experience a few stumbles out of the gate, and sometimes those stumbles coincide with a customer's first encounter with a business. When such encounters hurt a business' image, a business owner can employ various strategies to restore that image and increase the likelihood that future interactions with customers go as smoothly as possible. * Look the part. A T-shirt and flip-flops may be your ideal outfit, but such attire is rarely appropriate in a professional atmosphere. Firsttime customers who see employees decked out in less formal attire may feel the company also takes a lax attitude toward its work, so avoid fashion that might give the wrong impression. * Prioritize positive customer service. Many businesses suffer from bad word of mouth that's spread when past customers share horror stories of negative experiences with company employees. Such a problem is easily remedied by prioritizing customer service. This includes emphasizing that those who answer the phones always

EASY CHICKEN AND DUMPLINGS Ingredients about 3 cups cooked chicken 6-8 cups chicken broth 2 cups flour 2 Tbs. butter ½ tsp. baking powder salt to taste (I just shake some in) about a cup of milk, maybe a bit less Instructions In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Cut the butter into the dry ingredients with a fork or pastry blender. Stir in the milk, mixing with a fork until the dough forms a ball. Heavily flour a work surface. You’ll need a rolling pin and something to cut the dumplings with. I like to use a pizza cutter. I also like to use a small spatula to lift the dumplings o the cutting surface. Roll the dough out thin with a heavily floured rolling pin. Dip your cutter in flour and cut the dumplings in squares about 2″x2″. It’s okay for them not to be exact. Just eye ball it. Some will be bigger, some smaller, some shaped funny. Use the floured spatula to put them on a heavily floured plate. Just keep flouring between the layers of dumplings. If they will be cooked soon, this method works well. If I’m going to cook them later in the day I layer them on a cookie sheet with wax paper between and lots of flour. You can also freeze them like this and then transfer them to a ziplock bag. To cook them, bring the broth to a boil. Drop the dumplings in one at a time, stirring while you add them. The extra flour on them will help thicken the broth. Cook them for about 15-20 minutes or until they not doughy tasting. Add the cooked chicken to the pot and you’re done!

Student-Loan Debt --The respected research group Brookings Institute has released reports that cast a disturbing eye on student-loan debt -- at least on the surface. The bare stats might look more grim than the reality. Between 1989 and today, graduate students have left school with debt that has risen from $10,000 to $40,000. At the bachelordegree level, the debt has risen from $6,000 to $16,000. However, because of having degrees, the lifetime income of those students also has increased enough. Over the past two decades, graduates have spent between 3 percent and 4 percent of their income repaying student loans, but the length of time for repayment has increased. The researchers concluded that graduates are no ZRUVH R̆ WKDQ WKH\ ZHUH D decade ago when it comes WR SD\LQJ R̆ VWXGHQW GHEW Other Brookings researchers asked whether students know how much debt they will accumulate. any federal debt at all (possibly because of the confusion about the source of student loans), and 14 percent said they didn’t have any student loan debt. Thirteen percent of students claimed to have no loans at all when they actually did, while 10 percent underestimated by more than $10,000 the amount of the loans they accrued. One disturbing conclusion was that “Students with high expected contributions are more likely to be unaware that they have any debt,” possibly because the parents were managing the decisions. The end result of this research? Some students might decide not to attend college at all, fearful of the debt. Others might reach graduation and be shocked at the mountain of debt they’ve accumulated. Some might EH SURPSWHG WR ¿QLVK XS quickly. “People ask me all the time to advertise in their media and my answer is always no. My reason to them is I spend all my advertising dollars I can with the Piedmont Shopper. We get the most results from them due to their loyal readers and awesome staff. Lesley Tucker took us from a non existent business to a successful well know business in less than a year. Her insightful ad designs pop off the page and have the customers walking through the door. “ Dustin Pierce - Owner - C&D Family Pawn
