Danville Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity (DPCHFH) has a big weekend ahead with major events planned for both Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. Since announcing plans in early January to relocate their administrative offices and ReStore to the Dan River Church Plaza, DPCHFH has been busy preparing the new space for Saturday’s Grand Opening. The festivities will start at 10 am and continue until 5 pm with refreshments, hourly give aways and discounts. The new ReStore will have almost triple the floor space as the old Hughes Street location. The Saturday morning dedication and ribbon cutting will include three special guests. Scott Randlett, Dan River Church Pastor will give the opening prayer. Mayor Sherman Saunders will speak for the City of Danville and County Board Chairperson Brenda Bowman. Michael D. Parsons, DPCHFH Executive Director, noted that each of the speakers is very important to Habitat and its future: “Without the support and help of Pastor Scott and the Dan River Church, DPCHFH could not have made this move. We are so happy they have welcomed us into the Plaza. DPCHFH has always worked closely with the City and the County so having Mayor Saunders and Chairperson Bowman speak at our opening helps reaffirm our relationship.” The ReStore is vital to Habitat’s success because it largely pays the administrative costs associated with running the organization. This means that donations to Habitat can be fully applied to building homes. Habitat family mortgages also support home building. The next Habitat home will start in March as soon as the ground allows a foundation to be poured. On Sunday afternoon, Duo Amabile will play a benefit concert for Habitat at the First Baptist Church, 871 Main Street in Danville. Duo Amabile is a dynamic and entertaining violin-piano team that has played across Europe and the US. The doors will open at 5 pm and the concert will start at 5:30 pm. Habitat wants to use the concert to raise funds but also to say thank you to the many groups that helped make the move possible. Tickets, regularly priced at $25, are available for $15 at the door to members of the Dan River Church, the First Baptist Church, the After Hours Rotary Club, local college and high school students, Chatham Hall students, and the YMCA Togetherhood Committee as a thank you for the work and support they provided to Habitat during the move. Senior tickets are available for $20. IMPACT OF NON-PROFITS ON LOCAL ECONOMY Non-profit organizations such as Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity (DPCHFH) are often overlooked in economic development and impact studies. In addition, they are often misrepresented. For example, many people still think DPCHFH gives away homes when they actually partner with qualified families to build homes which the family then buys through the DPCHFH mortgage program. A recent study by the Northern Rocky Mountain Economic Development District (NRMEDD) provides some clues as to the positive economic impact of DPCHFH. NRMEDD examined the economic impact of non-profit organizations in the Bozeman, Livingston, Gallatin and Park counties area of Montana. They found that for each one (1) dollar spent by a non-profit three (3) dollars in economic activity was generated. Using the same multiplier for DPCHFH reveals ... continued on page 2

Danville Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity (DPCHFH) a significant economic impact on the region. For example, the DPCHFH operating budget for 2014-15 will generate $1,027,800 in economic activity in the area. The economic impact of the mortgages held by DPCFH are slightly more difficult to assess. Using the NRMEDD multiplier than the economic impact is $1,516,470. Missing from the estimate are the real estate taxes home owners pay to local governments. DPCHFH has impacts that go beyond quantitative economic measures. Homeowners, compared to renters, are more active in their communities, take advantage of educational opportunities, and report higher levels of self-esteem and happiness when compared to renters (“Social Benefits of Homeownership and Stable Housing, NAR, 2013). The same report goes on to note that “homeowners have more invested both financially and emotionally. . . . homeowners are more motivated to deter crime by forming and implementing voluntary crime prevention programs. In addition, it is easier for homeowners to recognize perpetrators in stable neighborhoods because of extensive social ties. Unstable neighborhoods often display social disorganization which can lead to higher levels of crime. Students in family owned homes perform at a higher educational level, have lower teen pregnancy rates, and lower school drop-out rates. Looking at DPCHFH through an economic impact lens reverses the conventional wisdom which assumes that non-profits are not important to the economy. If one adds the economic impact of groups such as the Boys and Girls Club, DPCHFH, God’s Pit Crew, God’s Storehouse, and other non-profits in Danville-Pittsylvania County together then the non-profit sector is a multimillion dollar economic contributor. The next time you make a donation to a non-profit such as DPCHFH think of it as an economic stimulus and as an investment in the future. For more information, please contact: Michael D. EMAIL An old county doctor went way out to the boondocks to deliver a baby. It was so far out that there was no electricity. When the doctor arrived, no one was home except for the laboring mother and her 5 year old child. The doctor instructed the child to hold a lantern high so he could see while he helped the woman deliver the baby. The child did so, the mother pushed, and after a little while, the doctor lifted the newborn baby by the feet and spanked him on the bottom to get him to take his first breath. “Hit him again, the child said. “He shouldn’t have crawled up there in the first place!!

Busch railroaded BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper Beyond reasonable doubt was not what Kent County (Del.) commissioner David Jones was thinking last Friday when he ruled NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kurt Busch “more likely than notâ€? and “almost surelyâ€? abused ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll at Dover International Speedway on September 26, 2014. His protective order against Busch stated “by a preponderance of the evidence‌committed an act of domestic violence and thereby recklessly placing Driscoll in reasonable fear of physical injuryâ€? was all the judge needed to strike down the embattled Busch. Within an hour following the release of the protective order, NASCAR boldly suspended the 6SULQW &XS FKDPSLRQ LQGHÂżQLWHO\ IRU ÂłDFWLRQV detrimental to stock car racing,â€? and under NASCAR’s behavior policy, which mandates “correct and proper FRQGXFW RQ DQG R̆ WKH UDFH WUDFN ´ As expected, following appeals by a threemember appellant board and the National 0RWRUVSRUWV )LQDO $SSHDOV 2̇FHU %U\DQ 0RVV %XVFK was without a ride. &KHYUROHW WKH FDU PDQXIDFWXUHU WKDW ÂżHOGHG cars used by Busch at Stewart-Haas Racing, also announced last Friday that it had “suspended its relationshipâ€? with Busch. Much of this was done in haste, and Busch’s attorney, Rusty Hardin, said the Busch camp was very displeased with the ruling “We are unhappy with the latest decision to deny our re-appeal, but we will continue to exhaust every procedural and legal remedy we have available to us until Kurt Busch is vindicated. “Along the way we intend to continue to call attention to the facts and witnesses that will shed light on Ms. Driscoll’s true character, motivations and history.â€? This was the third suspension of Busch’s career. +H ZDV VXVSHQGHG IRU WKH ÂżQDO WZR UDFHV RI WKH season following a dispute with an Arizona police ṘFHU DQG LQ 1$6&$5 VXVSHQGHG %XVFK IRU one race after an encounter with a reporter. Those things stack up against Busch, but it doesn’t make him guilty and make a Delaware judge rush to judgment when there was sound evidence presented in court by very reliable witnesses that this was a case in which Ms. Driscoll was out to destroy Busch’s career following a relationship that soured. Busch has dealt with adversity for most of his racing career. Gene Haas, the billionaire co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, courted Busch to drive for the team in 2014 and funded the deal through his machine tool company. Busch’s close connection with the “outlawâ€? image that he nurses in NASCAR is still QR VRXQG UHDVRQ IRU D ÂłSURWHFWLYH RUGHU´ ÂżOHG DJDLQVW KLP DQG DQ LQGHÂżQLWH VXVSHQVLRQ E\ 1$6&$5 That’s cruel. NASCAR must have been sleeping when 2003 Truck Series champion Travis Kvapil was arrested and charged with assault on his wife and false imprisonment. Court documents in a North Carolina District Court in Iredell County reveal that Kvapil pulled his wife by her hair into a bedroom and struck her in the head when she attempted to pull away. He was given two years probation and 72 hours of community service for his actions. That’s a far cry for someone who cupped his girlfriend’s cheek, looked her in the eye and told her she needed to leave. Busch’s latest encounter puts him at the crossroads of his career. His reputation is not a bedtime story, and at this juncture his demeanor must be addressed if he is to continue to race in NASCAR, which is fueled by marketing and sponsorships. Sponsorships, like Chevrolet, have spoken. And sponsors have plenty of alternatives, such as the ability to get out of sponsorships due to a break of moral clauses. A third encounter with NASCAR may be more than Busch can handle. 45 Since 19

10 Ways To Conserve Energy This Winter Conserving energy in the winter is a concern for many men and women. Whether your goal is to save energy and do your part for the environment or to trim a few dollars from your winter utility bills, here are 10 ways to reduce energy consumption without sacrificing comfort this winter. 1. Have the furnace serviced. You can reduce furnace fuel consumption by as much as 10 percent by having the system serviced yearly. Late spring or early autumn is a good time to schedule an inspection and have filters replaced in forced-air systems. All radiators and other elements should be kept free of dust. 2. Remedy drafty windows. Drafty windows not only let cold air in, but also let warm air out. This is a one-two punch in terms of energy waste, forcing heating units to work harder to regulate a consistent temperature. Caulking and weatherstripping applications are easy do-it-yourself projects. If windows are old and especially drafty, consider replacement. If such an undertaking will stretch your budget, use tightly sealed plastic sheeting to insulate drafty windows until you can afford to replace them. 3. Address additional leaks. Windows and doors are not the only places where cold air can get in or warm air can escape. Leaks occur around pipes and plumbing penetrations to the home, and cold air also can enter through utility cut-throughs, light plates and outlets. Use insulation or weatherstripping to seal leaks in these areas. 4. Decorate with light-colored furnishings. Light-hued walls and furniture will reflect the sunlight that makes it into a home while also reflecting artificial light more effectively than darker shades. This can help you reduce your reliance on lamps and other lighting. 5. Make use of the sun. In the winter, the sun’s rays are not as powerful as during other seasons. That’s due to the tilt of the planet’s axis. However, you can still maximize

daylight time for warmth. Open curtains and drapes on southern-facing windows and let warm sunlight shine through. Then close the curtains again when evening falls. You may be able to turn down the heat during the day when the sun is warming your home. 6. Use fireplaces properly. Fireplaces can be unnecessary sources of drafts and leaks. Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning. Keeping the damper open is like keeping a window wide open during the winter, allowing warm air to go right up the chimney. When the fireplace is in use, reduce heat loss by opening dampers in the bottom of the firebox or open the nearest window slightly and close doors leading into the room. If your fireplace is more decorative than functional, keep the damper closed at all times and consider sealing the chimney. 7. Conduct an energy audit. A home energy audit, also known as a home energy assessment, is the first step to assess how much energy your home consumes and to evaluate which measures you can take to make your home more energy-efficient. Many times these government-sponsored programs are free, and an auditor will go through your home with a fine-toothed comb looking for potential energy losses. After the audit is conducted, you can choose which repairs or modifications make the most sense for your budget and needs. 8. Adjust the direction of your ceiling fan blades. Blades that spin clockwise will trap heat inside to keep your rooms warmer during the cooler months. Adjust your ceiling fan to a low setting to gently push hot air back down. 9. Wear warmer clothes. Layer clothing when you’re in the house to reduce the need to adjust the heat. A sweater, pair of thick socks and a throw blanket can keep you cozy. 10. Only heat the rooms you use. Close off venting or turn off radiators in spaces that are not in use. There is no point in heating unoccupied rooms. Any modifications you make to insulation, window drafts, thermostats, and HVAC systems are not just beneficial for the winter, but they also should help you save money and energy in the summer, too.

A tradition that neither knew would continue on throughout their daily lives. About a year and ½ later, Joe mustered up the courage to ask the beautiful, fair-haired 17-year old out on a date. Accompanied by his friend, Leonard, Joe headed over to Mildred’s family home to begin his yearlong courtship. The two fell in love quickly and married on December 14, 1957, beginning a love story that would last for 57 years. A story of great friendship and devotion, the two welcomed three children and

nine grandchildren into the world during their life together. Engraved with the lessons passed from her mother, Mildred’s love for her family and friends knew no bounds. A truly selfless member of the community and her church, she was quick to help others and cherished her role as a mother and grandmother. She hung pictures of her family proudly throughout her home, always expressing how much she loved them all. It came as no surprise that even as she battled cancer, her desire to help and provide for others kept her as strong and as determined as ever. She spent her final weeks surrounded by the family and friends she loved so dearly and whose lives she touched in unforgettable ways. Mildred always had the incredible gift of turning any situation into a positive and memorable occasion, using her deep-rooted love and faith in God. Nonetheless, I knew that they knew more than I did. So on the next attempt I tucked my legs tightly underneath me, and lifted from about three inches lower on my chest. The bar felt 30 pounds lighter than before. I shot it up, racked it, stood up and screamed in triumph, and immediately began to plan for more. A simple matter of mechanics changed everything. In order to lift the heaviest weights you have to come from lower down, and your legs have to stay tucked. And that, friend, is a perfect metaphor for the heavy burdens of life. Easy crisp-tender chicken with the creamiest lemon butter sauce ever - you’ll want to forget the chicken and drink the sauce instead! Ingredients 8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs 1 tablespoon smoked paprika Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup chicken broth 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan Juice of 1 lemon 1 teaspoon dried thyme 2 cups baby spinach, chopped Instructions Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Season chicken thighs with paprika, salt and pepper, to taste. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large oven-proof skillet over medium high heat. Add chicken, skin-side down, and sear both sides until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side; set aside. Melt remaining tablespoon butter in the skillet. Add garlic, and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Stir in chicken broth, heavy cream, Parmesan, lemon juice and thyme. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, stir in spinach, and simmer until the spinach has wilted and the sauce has slightly thickened, about 3-5 minutes. Return chicken to the skillet. Place into oven and roast until completely cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 175 degrees F, about 2530 minutes. Serve immediately.

Settings Financial Goals‌

The Wikipedia deďŹ nition: A goal is a desired result a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development. Many people endeavor to reach goals within a ďŹ nite time by setting deadlines. I have always believed in setting goals. In many of the seminars that I do I talk about setting short term and long term goals for your ďŹ nances. It is also important that you set deadlines and make them attainable goals. When it comes to ďŹ nances some of your goals might be to improve your credit score, pay down debt, have money in savings, or start planning for retirement. Whatever your goal is, it is important to educate yourself on the best way to achieve that goal and then take action. Reaching a short term goal of $100 in a savings account will motivate you toward a long term goal of $1,000.00. When it comes to reaching your ďŹ nancial goals URW Community Federal Credit Union is always here to help. 314 Lowes Drive 539 Arnett Blvd 142 South Main Street (DRMC) 13701 US Hwy 29, Suite I, Chatam, VA 24531 www.urwfcu.org • 434.793.1278 See Us On Facebook
