February 5th - 11th, 2015 NASCAR Officially Inducts Wendell Scott Into Hall Of Fame Danville native son Wendell Scott was officially inducted Friday night into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, with son Franklin Scott proudly proclaiming, “It is my hope and desire that tonight will serve as inspiration and motivation to anyone who has a dream or a vision for greatness.” City Council members and staff traveled Friday to Charlotte, N.C., for the NASCAR Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Wendell Scott joined Bill Elliott, Fred Lorenzen, Joe Weatherly and Rex White in the 2015 class of the Hall of Fame. The class was the sixth in the history of the Hall of Fame. Scott died in 1990 at the age of 69 due to cancer. Scott’s sons Wendell Scott Jr. and Franklin Scott represented the family in accepting their father’s induction. Franklin Scott said, “Daddy was a man of great honor. He didn’t let circumstances define who he was. The Bible teaches that before a person can have honor, they must first have integrity and humility. “In addition, another one of his great attributes was perseverance. There were two words that were forbidden for use to use growing up in the Scott household. Those words were ‘can’t’ and ‘never.’ In spite of the many obstacles, struggles and many hardships he faced, he persevered, and what seemed to be insurmountable odds to others, Daddy considered an opportunity.” Scott closed, saying, “We’d like to thank everyone who contributed to our father receiving this great honor. It’s my hope and desire that tonight will serve as inspiration and motivation to anyone who has a dream or a vision for greatness.” Jeff Gordon, one of the top drivers on today’s Sprint Cup Series, introduced Scott for induction. “He (Scott) did a lot with a little,” Gordon said. “On a shoestring budget and with a pit crew that truly was a family affair, he carved out a legendary career. “His is a story of perseverance and determination in the face of unimaginable obstacles. He fought through any and all hardships, and tonight he reaches NASCAR’s pinnacle.” The NASCAR tribute to Scott continued, declaring that Scott did not set out to ... continued on page 4

EMAIL Skinny Dipping An elderly man in Florida had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back. It was properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some orange, and lime trees. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, 'we're not coming out until you leave!' The old man frowned, 'I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked..' Holding the bucket up he said, 'I'm here to feed the alligator.' Some old men can still think fast.

NASCAR Officially Inducts Wendell Scott Into Hall Of Fame ... continued from front article
434-724-2600 make history, but that is just what he did. “He was a bold, tactful driver filled with tenacity. He battled racing legends and prejudice.” Scott wasn’t the first African-American to compete in NASCAR’s premier division, but he was the first of his race to compete full time in the series, and the first to win at NASCAR’s highest level. Scott was a self-taught mechanic who honed his skills in the Army as a motor pool mechanic. He began racing in 1947 after three years of military service and experienced immediate success. He won more than 100 races in the next decade at local area tracks and claimed the 1959 NASCAR Virginia Sportsman championship. Scott made his first start in NASCAR’s premier series on March 4, 1961, at Piedmont Interstate Fairgrounds in Spartanburg, S.C. He made 23 starts that season, posting five top-five finishes. On Dec. 1, 1963, at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Fla., Scott became the first African-American to win a NASCAR premier series event. Over 13 years, Scott made 495 starts, accumulating 20 top-five finishes and 147 top-10 finishes. Racing legend Richard Petty said of Scott that his equipment was never strong enough that he could run 200 laps as hard as he could. Following the ceremony, Mayor Sherman Saunders presented the Scott family with a certificate of recognition, which read as follows: WHEREAS, the greatest loves of Danville native Wendell Oliver Scott, Sr. were God, family and stock car racing; and WHEREAS, Scott’s skills as a stock car driver were complemented by his mechanical genius; and WHEREAS, Scott established himself as one the premier drivers in NASCAR history; and WHEREAS, Scott was the first African-American to compete full-time in NASCAR’s premier division; and WHEREAS, On December 1, 1963, at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Florida, Scott became the first African-American to win a NASCAR premier series event; and WHEREAS, in his distinguished career, Scott accumulated 20 top-five finishes and 147 top-10 finishes; and WHEREAS, the City of Danville is proud of its native son, has named a street and community in his honor, and in further tribute, proclaimed April 5, 2013, as “Wendell Oliver Scott, Sr. Day;” and WHEREAS, on Friday, January 30, 2015, Scott will be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame: NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sherman M. Saunders, Mayor of the City of Danville, Virginia, do hereby recognize and celebrate the life and legacy of WENDELL OLIVER SCOTT, SR. GIVEN under my hand this 30th day of January 2015.

He graduated in 3 years with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and entered into the armed forces to serve with the Navy. It was at Columbia University where he met Sylvia Halladay who was also a student at Columbia University in the School of Nursing.. They married and on graduation moved to his first duty station of Norfolk, Virginia, at the Norfolk Naval Hospital. Surviving are children (and spouses) Leon ‘Chip’ Lackey, Jr. (Carolyn) of Penhook, Virginia; Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Hodges (the Honorable Robert Hodges) of Morganton, North Carolina; Janet Lackey Gardner of Louisville, Kentucky; and Dr. Charles Halladay Lackey (Judy) of Roanoke, Virginia; GRANDCHILDREN (and spouses) Ronnie Hodges (Laura); Leon “Trey” Lackey III (Shelly) of Fairfax, Virginia; Leigh Hodges (Todd) Warren of Davidson, North Carolina; Dr. Adam Lackey of Royal Oak, Michigan; Sam Lackey (Jackie) of Roanoke, Virginia; Dr. Kim Lackey Gaddie (Matt) of Bardstown, Kentucky; Stacy Wren (Rev Eric Wren) of Louisville, Kentucky; GREAT GRANDCHILDREN Aaron Hodges; Logan Hodges; Noel Lackey; Brodie Gaddie; McGuire Warren, new twins Holly and Harper Wren. He later built and occupied his permananent office on East Church Street where he practiced until retirement. While actively practicing dentistry he also became very involved in the community--he loved to share his talents and knowledge through a myriad of activities and organizations. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Martinsville Rotary Club; he held every and all lay positions but one in the First Baptist Church of Martinsville and with wife Sib started a Training Union program at the church and supervised its operation until the church hired a minister of education. He was a member of both Forest Park and Chatmoss country clubs and a long term member of the Patrick Henry Dental Society. At one time he lived with wife and 4 children and with 2 dogs, a litter of puppies, 2 cats, a horse and a colt, several ducks and chickens and others of God’s creation, all at the same time on Sam Lions Trail. He was appreciative that his brother Bob practiced veterinary services in Martinsville during those years. A few of his proudest achievements (actually many) were his medical missionary trips that he took on behalf of his church, the first to Ghana, West Africa as well as a second trip to India accompanied by wife Sib who was an expublic health nurse who accompanied physicians into remote village clinics there. Another special experience was the foreign exchange cultural sponsorship of a young female student from Quito, Ecuador to live with the family and who graduated with twins Bob and Betsy during their high school senior year at MAVAHI in 1965. A memorial service will be held at Kings Grant Victory Chapel in Martinsville, Virginia at 11 AM on Saturday, January 31, 2015. Billions of greeting cards are sold and exchanged each year, and Valentine's Day is one of the most popular days of the year to give a loved one a greeting card. The Greeting Card Association says 145 million Valentine's Day units are sold in the United States each year. The association says seven out of 10 surveyed card buyers consider greeting cards to be essential to them, and are passing on the greeting card tradition to younger generations. Though the tradition of exchanging greeting cards is still going strong, few may know the history and etiquette behind this time-tested tradition. Greeting card history The tradition of exchanging greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, where people exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year. Over time, greeting cards were exchanged for various reasons, and by the 1850s greeting cards were transformed from handmade, expensive purchases to relatively affordable means of personal communication and well-wishing. Valentine's Day greetings have been popular since the Middle Ages, when they were sung or spoken aloud to special people. Cards were popularized in the 1400s, and the oldest known Valentine created during this era is on display in the British Museum in London. Valentines were initially made by hand, but by the end
of the 1800s, the process of making cards was handled by machinery. Esther Howland, an American printer and artist, was one of the first to publish and sell valentines in the United States. Yet it took a few more years for a card company to manufacture and distribute valentines. Keeping cards Although there are no rules governing just how long to keep and display a card, most people keep them for five to seven days. Some special occasion cards, such as milestone birthdays or religious rites of passage, may warrant holding on to the card for posterity. However, the length of time cards are kept is entirely at the discretion of the recipient. Etiquette Sending cards requires a little know-how. Start out with a high-quality card to show that you value the recipient. If you're taking the time to send a greeting card, make sure it looks like you put some effort into its selection. Be sure your card list is continually updated with new addresses and contact information. If you do so regularly, it's easier to send cards when the time comes. Ensure greeting cards will arrive on time by mailing them out a week or two before the special day. Few things are worse than a card arriving late and seeming like an afterthought. Address cards by hand and sign them personally. Although desktop printers can make fast work of card mailings, writing things out by hand is a special touch that indicates you care. Personal greeting cards for close friends and family members may also deserve an extra special touch, like including a custom message or a photograph. Greeting cards are about expressing sentiments to special people in your life. They're popular on Valentine's Day and all year long to commemorate holidays and special occasions. ------

Much to the chagrin of his snobby mother (Angela Lansbury), Gates lands a job as a tour guide at the same company where his girlfriend, Maile (Joan Blackman), also works. Wayne Alan, the owner of The Historic North Theatre is planning on presenting numerous classic films as well as some independent and foreign films. “We will have some themed film festivals that will feature everything from Alfred Hitchcock films to Marilyn Monroe films,” he said. Oreo Delight
Ingredients 1 pkg regular Oreo cookies ¾ stick of butter, melted 2 – 8 oz containers of Cool Whip 1 – 8 oz cream cheese, softened 1 cup confectioners/powdered sugar 1 large (5.9-ounce) pkg chocolate instant pudding 2¾ cup milk Instructions Crush entire bag of Oreo cookies using a food processor (or take out your frustrations and do it manually) Reserve 1 cup of Oreo crumbs and mix remaining crumbs with melted butter. Press Oreo crumbs/butter mixture into bottom of 9X13 pan to form a crust. Mix 1 container of Cool Whip, softened cream cheese, and confectioners sugar in a large bowl. A mixer might be handy here. Spread the Cool Whip/cream cheese/sugar mixture on top of the packed crumbs. Mix the pudding and milk. Allow to set. Spread the pudding over the previous layer. Spread the other container of Cool Whip on top. Top with reserved Oreo crumbs. Chill and enjoy!

Cholesterol And Its Relation To Heart Disease High cholesterol levels have long been directly linked to heart disease. But as more research into cholesterol and its relation to heart disease is conducted, some doctors are shifting their views on the relationship between the two. Statistics from the American Heart Association indicate that 75 million Americans currently suer from heart disease. And even though one-quarter of the population takes cholesterol-lowering medication and have reduced the fat content of their diets, the AHA estimates that more Americans will die of heart disease than ever before. More revelations are coming to the forefront regarding cholesterol and heart disease. New research has shown that statin drugs are ineective at reducing mortality rates in most populations. Furthermore, according to the Framingham Heart Study, which is the longest-running and most comprehensive study on heart disease to date, it was demonstrated that cholesterol intake in the diet had no correlation with heart disease. The study found that men and women with above average cholesterol levels had nearly identical rates of heart disease compared to those with below average cholesterol rates. Another potential eye opener is that, in addition to cholesterol not aecting heart disease risk, eating high-cholesterol foods does not elevate blood-cholesterol levels as doctors once thought. Ancel Keys, who is considered the "father" of the theory that cholesterol contributes to heart disease, now says that there's no connection between cholesterol in food and cholesterol in the blood. If not cholesterol levels and the foods one eats, what, then is responsible for heart disease? Many medical professionals and researchers now believe the primary causes of heart disease are inflammation and oxidative stress. According to Dr. Dwight Lundell, a heart surgeon and author of the book, "The Great Cholesterol Lie," foods like refined sugars and vegetable oils used to preserve processed foods may lead to the inflammation that ultimately causes heart disease. Inflammation is the body's immune response to a foreign invader. Foods high in sugar and saturated fat can exacerbate inflammation. Bacteria and other unwanted substances in the body also contribute to inflammation. To combat inflammation, people can adopt a healthy eating style. Fatty fish, whole grains, leafy greens, fiber, and nuts can help reduce inflammation. Exercise also can reduce inflammation. Research from Mark Hamer, PhD, an epidemiologist at University College London, found that, regardless of BMI or weight, study participants who completed 2.5 hours of moderate exercise each week - about 20 minutes a day - lowered their markers of inflammation by at least 12 percent. When a person exercises, muscle tissue releases a protein molecule called cytokine, which likely prompts an inflammation drop. Just about any type of workout that raises heart rate is eective in helping with inflammation. The public may have been misinformed about just how vital it is to reduce cholesterol levels. Contrary to popular belief, high cholesterol may not have the same connection to heart disease as doctors once thought. In fact, inflammation may be the bigger component in heart disease risk. ------HEALTH/MEDICAL FOOD/BEVERAGE FITNESS/NUTRITION LIVING50PLUSMICROSITE
