Why Does The World Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? March 17 is a special day for people of Irish heritage and other celebrants across the globe. Each year, millions of people pay homage to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, with parades, parties and religious services. Celebrations occur even though many celebrants may know little about this legendary saint. Although St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a festivity filled with clovers, frosty mugs of beer, green clothing, and lively music, the day was once a religious feast day honoring the man many credit with bringing Christianity to Ireland. St. Patrick was born in Britain circa AD 387. Many are surprised to learn he was not Irish. In fact, St. Patrick first spent time in Ireland when he was captured by Irish pagans as a teen and taken to their country as a slave. After six years working as a shepherd, Patrick became familiar with the customs and spirit of the Irish and “found God.” He was able to eventually escape his imprisonment, vowing to one day return to Ireland as a free man. Patrick was schooled at monasteries and was ordained a priest and later became a bishop. Under Pope Celestine I, he was commissioned to become an apostle to Ireland and spread the news of God and Christianity. St. Patrick spent many years evangelizing in the northern half of Ireland and converted thousands of people from paganism to Christianity. According to legend, St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish. Patrick’s efforts to drive out the pagans became an allegory in which he drove “snakes” out of Ireland. Although green has become the primary color of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and green remains widely associated with Ireland, during the 18th century, the Order of St. Patrick, an Anglo-Irish chivalric order, adopted blue as it’s official color. That led to blue being associated with St. Patrick. However, “wearing of the green” eventually fell back into favor, and the color green and an association with St. Patrick’s Day grew during the 19th and 20th centuries. Although St. Patrick’s Day originated as a religious celebration in honor of a man who brought Christianity to Ireland, it has since become a larger representation of Irish pride and culture.

EMAIL What It’s Like To Be Poor One day a very wealthy mother took her daughter on a trip to the countryside for the sole purpose of showing her daughter what it was like to be poor. They spent a few days and nights on the farm of what would be considered by most to be a low-income family — a family with simple ways. The days they spent were filled with: pumping well water to drink, enjoying the outdoors, swimming, gardening, farm chores, and quite a bit of laughter and fun too. After their return to the big city and deluxe apartment in the sky, the mother asked her daughter what she thought of her time on the farm. “It was wonderful, Mom,” the daughter replied. “Wasn’t it interesting how they live?” asked the mother. “Yes,” said the daughter. “So what did you learn?” asked the mother. The daughter answered, “I noticed that we have one dog, and one cat and they have four dogs and three cats. We have a marble swimming pool that reaches our garden at our summer house, and they have a large creek that meanders through the forest. We have fancy solar light bulbs in our garden, and they have six million stars at night. Our balcony sees the dirty city while they have beautiful forests to look upon. We have no land and never touch the earth except during summer at the cottage while their hands are planting and touching the beautiful Earth almost every day. We buy food from a store, but they grow their food. We have computer codes and passwords to protect us; they have their animals, family and neighbors to protect them.” The girl’s mother was a bit stunned. Then her daughter added, “It showed me very clearly just how poor we are and how much happier we can be.”

The Sound of Crickets

--Cricket is a sport that Americans, in general, do not ever play. But here’s what we do know: We know that the game exists. We know that India, Britain and Australia play the game often. We know that it requires hitting a ball with a stick, and history has shown that we’re very good at hitting things. It’s not like it’s bobsledding, a sport we perennially suck at. This is something we can actually do. It is for just those reasons that I submit the challenge. I looked into the rules of how the game is played, and I stand here before you none the wiser. I haven’t a clue as to the subtle nuances of the game. I know that you can hit the baseball-sized ball with a flattened side of a willow wood bat out of the park and it’s worth 6 runs. A ground rule double is apparently worth 4 runs. There are 10 outs per inning, there are 11 players on defense and each game lasts about 5 days. And people complain that baseball is too slow? The game has other rules. There’s one rule that states if a red ball is used, no team can wear colorful uniforms. They have to wear white or off-white uniforms. I don’t see this as an obstacle. I’m sure that UnderArmour can come up with something that fits the bill. Naturally, there will be naysayers. Americans barely support outdoor or, for that matter, indoor lacrosse. How can

we just pick up another sport when the WNBA still needs our support? The answer is easy, my friends: Gary Sheffield. Admittedly, I have not run this idea past Mr. Sheffield. This is partially because I fear him a great deal. That being said, who out there among us can deny the fact that Gary Sheffield will destroy the ball in cricket? Send Sheffield, Derek Jeter (because you have to send Derek Jeter, if only to make nice with the international press) and all manner of exbaseball players to play the game. I think Curt Schilling would make an excellent bowler (pitcher, in baseball vernacular) along with John Smoltz. I bet Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams would sign on. Ichiro would be a no-brainer, and for laughs we can ask Lou Piniella to coach the team. Surely he will appreciate the pace of each 30-hour game. Look ... President John F. Kennedy issued the challenge that we put a man on the moon, not because it was easy but because it was hard, and that was in the 1960s. President George W. Bush challenged us to go to Mars, and as far as he’s concerned, Matt Damon fulfilled his mission. But I’m talking cricket, America. This is something we can actually do, that will never be considered a hoax or ever require the approval of Ben Affleck. Cricket, America. It’s time. computer actually causes brain changes. Still to be determined: whether increased participation or computer use would yield an even bigger reduction in risk. What does this mean for us? It means we should stay engaged, learn new things, accept challenges, be active and go out and socialize. We could even combine activities: Take a computer class that meets at least once a week, and afterward go out for lunch and coffee with a group of students. Or use the Internet to look up craft and hobby instructions and get ideas for new projects, or meet with a group to create crafts together. Use the Internet to sign up for news feeds and stay up on current events, or join a current events meet-up and socialize at the same time. There are lots of possibilities, and all could have a positive outcome.

--Using a computer just once a week can help seniors avoid memory and thinking declines by a whopping 42 percent. So says a recent Mayo clinic study. This wasn’t a small study. Nearly 2,000 seniors participated, and all were age 70 and over. Four years earlier they had filled out a questionnaire that covered playing games, making crafts, socializing, reading magazines and computer use. Researchers then tracked them over time. The results: Playing games dropped the risk of memory decline by 14 (c) 2016 King Features percent, making crafts Synd., Inc. lowered it 16 percent, socializing saw a 23 percent drop and reading cut it by 30 percent. Computer use had the greatest effect at 42 percent. What researchers don’t know, however, is exactly how it works -- whether Red Bird Times it’s because of the lifestyle Sponsored that computers users have or because using a Column

Seasonal Allergy Triggers Allergic reactions occur when the body’s immune system attacks an often harmless substance like animal dander, food or pollen. Medication can help reduce the severity of such reactions, but some allergy sufferers find allergic reactions inconvenient nuisances even with medication. Understanding what triggers allergic reactions may help some people avoid them or make them easier to handle. The following are some of the more common allergy triggers and how men and women suffering from allergies can avoid them. Pollen Pollen is perhaps the best-known allergy trigger. A fine, often yellow substance that’s essential to the fertilization of flowers, pollen can be spread by wind, insects or other animals. Hay fever sufferers may sneeze or experience a runny nose and itchy eyes when pollen spreads. Over-the-counter medications, such as Claritin®, can be especially effective at relieving symptoms of seasonal allergies. But allergy sufferers also can combat high pollen counts by staying indoors on windy days and closing their windows and running their air conditioners. Pet dander Dander are flakes of skin in an animal’s fur or hair. Because of their microscopic size, these flakes of skin can easily attach and remain attached to bedding, fabrics and furniture. Many people keep their pets even if they develop allergies to dander. Should such a situation arise, do not allow your pet into your bedroom, bathe the animal regularly and remove carpeting in favor of bare floors or washable rugs. Mold Mold is a furry growth of minute fungal hyphae that is often found in damp parts of a home, such as basements and bathrooms. Mold also can be found in grass and mulch, triggering allergic reactions when men and women spend time in their yards. To avoid an allergic reaction triggered by mold, make sure moist areas of your home get fresh air regularly and routinely clean ceilings or other areas where mold may grow. Dust mites Tiny bugs that live in bedding, carpets, curtains, upholstery, and mattresses, dust mites feed on dead skin cells from people and pets. Dust mites also may feed on bacteria, fungi and pollen. Dust mites thrive in humid conditions, but these pests can be combatted with hypoallergenic pillows and mattress covers. Removing materials that collect dust, such as carpet, also can reduce the number of dust mites. Seasonal allergies affect millions of people. But such sufferers can combat their seasonal allergies by taking several proactive approaches to eliminate allergens before reactions occur.

Finally! Some Answers In VA Wait- Time Probe Allegations of waittime manipulation at the Phoenix VA Health Care System surfaced two years ago, and more allegations followed. Since then, the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General has conducted more that 70 investigations. It’s now starting to roll out the results of those inquiries. Here are few highlights: Iowa -- It was alleged that “secret waiting lists” were destroyed before the inspection. One list had been created by a clinical psychologist to track how long it took for his patients to get appointments. He was told to delete it, even though it helped him help his patients. Louisiana -- A list similar to the one in Iowa had been created by staff to keep patients from “falling through the cracks” in the system, and had nothing to do with scheduling. New staff was to be hired, and veterans couldn’t be assigned appointments with a specific doctor yet ... hence the list to keep track of them. Minnesota -- Two former employees alleged that they’d been instructed to manipulate appointment

dates or cancel patient appointments. Both had appeared on television shows making allegations, which were not substantiated in 26 subsequent interviews of employees. Illinois -- One employee admitted to changing desired appointment dates and next available dates to create a zero-wait appearance because she thought that’s what she was supposed to do in order to avoid repercussions by management. Florida -- A former employee alleged that clerks were manipulating scheduling data, but it appears they just didn’t understand the difference between a desired appointment date and an available one. Intentional manipulation isn’t what comes through in an initial reading of these reports. It seems more a matter of confusion. To read the full reports and keep track of new ones as they come in, check www.va.gov/oig. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Buying a home can be very competitive. A well-maintained property with all of the bells and whistles that today’s buyers demand figures to attract many offers, and buyers who have found their dream homes must be prepared to make an offer that sellers can’t refuse. Standing out in a sea of other potential home buyers is not always so easy, but there are steps buyers can take to ensure their offer is the one sellers ultimately accept. • Get preapproved for a mortgage. Sellers’ patience may wear thin with buyers who are not preapproved for a mortgage when making their offers. Preapproval can speed up the selling process, as buyers won’t need to secure financing afterward. When sellers receive multiple offers on their homes, they are more likely to sell their homes to buyers whose financing is already lined up as opposed to buyers who have to scramble to secure loans. • Establish a strong rapport with the sellers. It’s not uncommon for homeowners to develop emotional attachments to their homes, and buyers should keep that in mind when viewing a home and negotiating their purchase. Sellers won’t want to hear about how ugly a home is or how much money buyers will have to spend to bring the home up to their standards. While buyers must weigh such variables when making their offers, keep it as cordial as possible and avoid any inflammatory remarks during the negotiation process. Sellers may be more likely to accept a lower offer from a buyer they like than a higher offer from someone they don’t like. • Don’t delay an inspection. When a property is drawing significant interest, buyers can set their offers apart from the rest by arranging for a near-immediate inspection. Some buyers may want sellers to give them a couple of weeks to arrange for an inspection, and that may irritate sellers who want to sell their homes as quickly as possible. Have an inspector ready to perform an inspection within days of making your offer. • Include an escalation clause. When making an offer on a home, prospective buyers can include an escalation clause. Such a clause acknowledges that a potential buyer is willing to increase his or her initial offer by a predetermined amount to exceed any bids that are higher than that initial offer. When sellers trigger such clauses, they are often required to show the other offers they received that triggered the escalation clause. Escalation clauses show the sellers you really want the house while keeping potential buyers’ hopes of buying the home alive when the bids are competitive. Prospective home buyers may find themselves in some stiff competition upon finding their dream homes. But a few simple strategies can make their offers stand out and increase their chances of buying their ideal homes.

Crispy Cheese & BACON Potatoes Ingredients 1/2 pound bacon 3 extra large russet potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1/2”-3/4” pieces, about 6 cups worth 1 teaspoon kosher salt 3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar or Mexican blend shredded cheeses 3 green onions, sliced thin Instructions COOK THE BACON: Spread the bacon strips out across a large rimmed baking sheet pan and place on the middle rack of a COLD oven. Set the temperature to 400 degrees. Set a timer for 16 minutes and check the bacon. Remove it from the oven when it is as crisp or crunchy as you like. I remove ours at 18 minutes and it’s a great balance of chewy crunch. If you like your bacon crispy enough to crumble, you will probably want to cook it another minute past that. COOK THE POTATOES: While the bacon is cooking, peel and chop the potatoes. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel lined plate to drain. There should be 2-3 tablespoons of bacon grease left on the tray. (If there is more than that, drain off a bit.) Put the potatoes on the tray and toss with tongs to thoroughly coat them in the bacon grease. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Spread the potatoes out in a single layer and bake for 20 minutes, stir well and bake an additional 20 minutes. Stir again, making sure that none of the potatoes are sticking to the tray. Bake another 15 minutes. Chop the bacon into small pieces. Remove the potatoes from the oven, stir again and sprinkle generously with shredded cheese and chopped bacon. Return the tray to the oven and bake an additional 2-3 minutes, until the cheese has melted. Top with sliced green onions just before serving. Enjoy! Yield: 6 servings
