Big/Little of January 2015 Catherine Owen works and attends Liberty University. She goes to the school to have lunch with the youth each week. They do fun activities together. The volunteer wanted to join the program to give back to the community. The little, Tenyiah Poole, enjoys having a Big sister. She feels as if the volunteer is really her Big sister. The youth does well in school, but the volunteer, using her skills from college, encourages the youth to do even better. The youth now is not as shy as she once was and respects the volunteer. Tenyiah’s grandmother also loves the mentor. The Grandmother states that the volunteer does activities and things that she is not able to participate in. They have a great relationship. She calls the volunteer “Kat”. The little’s grandmother states that the volunteer is the best thing to happen to Tenyiah through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area program.
Big/Little of February 2015 Bebe Janish was very excited to be a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters. The volunteer has an “empty nest” so she looks forward to spending time with a new “little” girl. They have loads of fun shopping and cooking. The matched pairs’ favorite food is pizza. Pizza parties at home are a Friday night staple. Bebe just loves spending time with Enyia and being a little girl again. The little, Enyia Mills, looks forward to spending time with her Big sister. She loves to play “make believe” on the volunteer’s play kitchen set in her home. The child gets to shop in the mall and thrift stored for things for herself and her room. Last week. The child had the biggest surprise of all: a visit from her Big sister at school. Enyia’s mother says that the match has been a good thing for her child all around. She has a new friend that is just for her.

Furthermore, I believe NASAR jumped the gun when they suspended Busch two days prior to the February Daytona 500 on the grounds he likely committed an act of domestic violence against his jilted ex-lover. “I’ve always believed in Kurt,â€? said Haas, the billionaire co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing that ÂżHOGV 6SULQW &XS FDUV IRU %XVFK Âł, VWLOO EHOLHYH LQ KLP today. National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month The Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center invites community members, government agencies, media, schools, businesses and community groups in Lynchburg to join them in this year’s National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month – a national movement to increase awareness and education about colorectal cancer and to spread the message that colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable. National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month will be observed throughout March and will include events and outreach activities nationwide. Centra will have educational tables on March 25 from 9-2pm at several of their facilities; Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center, Lynchburg General Hospital, Virginia Baptist Hospital, Bedford Memorial Hospital and Southside Community Hospital. Many people do not realize that simply aging can make you more at risk for developing colon cancer and it doesn’t always cause symptoms. Colorectal cancer is one of only a few cancers that can be prevented through screening, which can detect and remove precancerous growths called “polyps.” Even so, colorectal cancer remains the third-leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States. Each year, tens of thousands of lives are lost to this disease; screening could save more than half of these lives. The American Cancer Society recommends that people 50 and older talk to their doctor about getting screened for colorectal cancer. People should speak to their doctor sooner if they have a family history of the disease or other condition that puts them at increased risk. The Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center is joining in the national effort to increase colorectal cancer awareness and promote the importance of screening.

ADD VALUE TO YOUR HOME WITH THESE RENOVATIONS Homeowners choose renovation projects for a variety of reasons. Although many improvements are made to increase functionality and comfort of a home, several others are seen as worthwhile investments. These investments can add up to a higher resale value when the time comes to sell a home. Certain projects have a history of providing a greater return on homeowners’ investments than others. The following renovation tips can add beauty to your home and generate great returns when you put the home up for sale. · Invest in your kitchen. Kitchen remodels are a safe bet when it comes to putting money into improving a home. Residents tend to spend a great deal of time in the kitchen, but a dated, poorly functioning kitchen can detract from the value of a home, even if the rest of the home is in good shape. It’s possible to recoup between 60 and 120 percent of your kitchen remodel investment, especially if the kitchen matches up well with the rest of your home. Homeowners should know that a deluxe renovation may not be necessary, as relatively moderate improvements can create a whole new look for a kitchen. · Look to paint. One of the least expensive improvement materials, but one that has a significant impact, is paint. Neutral, modern colors can easily liven up any space. If you paint with low-VOC paint, you also can advertise an eco-friendly home, which is very desireable these days. · Put in another bathroom. Multiple bathrooms are an attractive selling point, particularly in older homes that may not have been equipped with more than one bathroom. Finding extra space for a bathroom can be tricky, but consider closets, areas under stairs or even taking some space away from another room. Popular home-improvement television channel HGTV advises that half-bathrooms require at least 18 square feet of space, while full baths need 30 to 35 square feet for a stand-up shower or bathtub. · Renovate the HVAC system. Aesthetic improvements aren’t the only ones that add value to a home. Many home buyers are eager to purchase a home that has a new heating and cooling system, as buyers understand that furnaces and air conditioning units are substantial investments that can last for years. Other improvements, such as adding attic insulation or replacing older windows and doors with more energy efficient options, also are smart bets. · Add illumination to rooms. A dark home is a dreary home. Adding light can mean including more overhead and accent lighting. Under-cabinet task lighting is a nice touch. Inclusion of skylights and sun tubes can bring natural light into rooms that may not have south- or west-facing windows. · Put a deck addition outdoors. Outdoor living spaces have become more desireable, especially as the “staycation” has grown in popularity. Decks and patios can make backyards more appealing. The scope of your investment will depend on the size of the deck and design. Doing the work yourself can cut the cost of decks in half, but only if you have the specific tools or experience to tackle such a project. · Improve curb appeal. Adding attractive landscaping and freshening up the entryway to a home can add considerable value to your home, as buyers judge homes by their exteriors. Completely renovated interiors may never be seen if buyers pass up your home because of a less attractive exterior. Classy, subtle changes, like well-placed shrubbery and a green lawn, can work wonders. An inviting front door and well-lit entryway also add curb appeal to a home. Before making improvements, homeowners should determine if a given project will provide a solid return on their investment.
HOW TO HANDLE WEED GROWTH Homeowners who take pride in their lawns and gardens know just how problematic weeds can be. Weeds can make otherwise well-manicured and thriving lawns and gardens appear unhealthy and ill-kempt. But homeowners don’t have to sit back and accept weeds as an inevitable byproduct of warm weather. The following are a handful of ways homeowners can handle weed growth so all their hard work is not masked by unwelcome weeds. · Pull weeds after watering. It might seem odd to water weeds, but watering weeds can actually make it easier to pull them out so they never return. When you pull weeds from soggy soil, you can more easily pull weeds’ entire root system from the ground. That means you aren’t just pulling the stems and leaves, but the entire weed from the ground. · Lay mulch. Mulch can benefit a garden in many ways, not the least of which is helping to prevent the growth of weeds. Mulch prevents sunlight from reaching weed seeds, helping to prevent the growth of weeds before they even appear to cause you headaches. In addition, mulch helps soil retain moisture, which benefits plants as summer temperatures rise. · Lay landscape fabric. Homeowners who want to do more than mulch can lay landscape fabric in their gardens as well. Landscape fabric will work in much the same way as mulch, blocking sunlight from reaching weed seeds and therefore preventing the weed seeds from germinating. When laying landscape fabric, simply cut holes in the fabric where the plants will be, lay the fabric down and then cover the fabric with mulch. · Plant strategically. How you plant also can help defeat weeds before they ever appear. Speak with your landscaper or a local lawn and garden professional before planting, asking if it’s possible to plant particular plants close together to prevent weed growth. Plants that are planted in close proximity to one another will block sunlight from reaching the soil, which will make it more difficult for weed seeds to germinate. Weeds are a formidable and unwelcome foe to homeowners who take pride in their lawns and gardens. But there are several ways to combat existing weed infestations and prevent their return in the future.

Lovely Lemon Rolls Author: LeighAnne Wilkes Ingredients ¼ cup warm water (100 degrees to 110 degrees F) 1 teaspoon sugar 2 envelopes Fleischmann’s® Active Dry Yeast or Rapid Rise Yeast 1 cup milk ½ cup butter, cut in chunks 2 eggs ½ cup sugar ¼ teaspoon salt 5¼- 5¾ cups flour Topping: ¼ cup butter, melted ½ cup lemon curd Glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar 1-2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice Instructions 1. Combine warm water and 1 teaspoon sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add yeast; let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes. 2. Heat milk and butter to 100 degrees to 110 degrees F. (Butter does not need to melt). 3. Add milk mixture, eggs, sugar, salt and 2 cups flour to yeast mixture. 4. Beat 3 minutes with electric mixer. Stir in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. 5. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 8 to 10 minutes or use a dough hook in mixer. 6. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat and cover or allow to rise, covered on the counter. 7. Let rise in a warm, draft-free place until doubled, about ab hour. Punch dough down. Divide into 24 small balls. 8. Grease 3 baking sheets. 9. Roll each ball into a 15-inch rope. Loosely coil each rope into a circle, tucking ends under. Cover and let rise in warm area until light and doubled in size, about 2030 minutes 10. Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees F. 11. Uncover dough and carefully brush rolls with half of the melted butter. Make deep thumbprints in center of each roll; fill each with 1 teaspoon lemon curd. 12. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately remove from pan; brush a second time with remaining butter. Cool slightly on wire rack. 13. In a small bowl, blend powdered sugar and enough lemon juice for vanilla desired drizzling consistency. Drizzle over warm rolls. Did you know these facts about Credit Unions? As a member of a credit union you are a shareholder. When you join a credit union you become an owner‌not a customer. Credit Unions have an annual membership meeting each year. Our membership votes on our board of directors. Our board members are volunteers‌they are not paid. Credit Unions are non-proďŹ t. Money that is earned on interest paid on loans take care of our operating expenses and we are able to give back to the membership. This is done by providing better services to our members and also offering better interest rates. Credit union funds are insured by the National Credit Union Association (NCUA).
