America Needs The Message Of Easter By Glenn Mollette The story of Easter is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Biblical story is about his crucifixion, burial and resurrection from the grave. His victory over the grave brought exhilaration to his disciples and other Christians who were beaten down by fear and exhaustion. After seeing Jesus again their strength and lives were renewed to go forward and live their lives proclaiming Jesus as the way to Knowing God and experiencing peace. Ever since the first Easter many more have found new life and renewed strength in the message of the risen Christ. The noise level of our country is often shattering. We are engulfed by the noise of politicians, cable news, negativism, human failure and comparing ourselves to others. All people experience disappointments and pain. All of these and much more are a part of this life. You can’t escape it and the more you live the more you will experience. As humans we have grown gifted in adding to each other’s hurts. We hurt with our speech, indifference and sometimes with outright condemnation. Jesus was the recipient of cruelty from the hands of the supposedly good people of his day. They were the religious crowd. They hated Jesus and pushed for his death. Some of the best people I’ve met in life go to church. Some of the meanest people I’ve met go to church. Billy Graham said years ago that the Devil doesn’t fight churches but that he joins them. You can find Jesus in most churches and you can usually find the devil. Wherever you find people you will find good people acting like people. People act like people at church, political gatherings and places of employment. Jesus was different. He acted like a man, but he was different. There was something incredibly renewing, saving, life giving and joyful about being around Jesus. The disciples loved him and loved being around him. How many people do you love being around? By the way are you fun to live with? Does your spouse or children enjoy being around you? We want to spend time with some people. Some people just drain us. They look like a commercial for an iodine bottle. They are miserable and make everybody else miserable. I don’t want to be that kind of person. I don’t want to be around people like this either. Jesus came to live. He died. He was treated the way ISIS would treat someone, except these were supposedly the good religious people of his day. There was nothing good about them. His story is one of overcoming the grave. He brought joy to people like Thomas who touched his hands and exclaimed my Lord and my God. Jesus was already in the practice of giving joy and new life. He gave it to a woman caught in adultery and was about to be stoned. He gave joy and new life to a leper who no one else would touch. He gave joy to the beaten down, the ostracized and those frazzled out by life. This year why not take some time and focus on Easter? Jesus once told his disciples, “The Thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full,” John 10:10. We need Easter in America. We have become a discouraged nation. We need some new life and joy. This was the message and life of Jesus. Glenn Mollette is an American Syndicated Columnist and Author. He is the author of eleven books and read in all fifty states. This column does not necessarily reflect the view of any organization, institution or this paper or media source. Squirrels In Church

Squirrels had overrun three churches in Fareham Town, Hampshire, UK. This amusing story was told to us by an old friend from the South coast of England. The vicars had tried everything in their power to remove them. After a great deal of prayer, the churchwardens of the first church determined that the animals were predestined to be there. Who were they to interfere with God’s will? However, the squirrels continued to multiply. The second church’s wardens also decided that they could not harm any of God’s creatures; so they purchased some humane traps, caught the miscreants and set the squirrels free outside of town in the New Forest. Several days later, the squirrels returned much to the Parish Council’s horror. It was only the third church, Holy Trinity, which succeeded in keeping the intruders away. The vicar baptised the squirrels and registered them as members of the church. Now they only see them at Christmas and Easter.

All Hands On Deck Per the Department of Veterans Affairs, a Blue Water Sailor seeking disability for Agent Orange exposure only has to approximate when and where he or she was, and the VA will do the rest, helpfully hunting up the ship’s records for the veteran’s claim. But this takes time, which a lot of ill veterans don’t have. And you really can’t expect the VA to put a rush on digging through archives. The VA also throws up some silly roadblocks. For example, it has temporarily pulled the list of eligible ships off its website. There’s a little note: “The list of U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships associated with military service in Vietnam and possible exposure to Agent Orange is currently being updated.” However, all across the country, sailors are banding together and swapping ship information. There’s a good chance that if just one sailor is approved for a certain ship in a certain location at a certain time,

others on that ship will be as well. Here’s how you can help, even if you’re not working on a claim. If you have any old logs, dig them out. If you kept a journal or made notes on a calendar and noted where you were and when, find it. If you’re online, look around for Blue Water Sailor websites and share your ship location information. Find your ship’s website and read the posts. Is anybody looking for specific locations and dates in order to complete a VA claim? If you don’t have online skills, find someone who does. It’s that important. Go online to bluewaternavy.org and scroll to Update Logs. Click and look all around. See the NARA On-Line Deck Logs of Vietnam Era Ships spreadsheet. The National Archives and Records Administration has ships logs in archives as it gets them scanned, or call the NARA at 866-2726272. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

In Memory of My Dad Roy Lee Ayers 9/3/28 - 3/21/92 Happy 59th Birthday in Heaven My Brother Robert Lee Ayers 3/21/57 - 10/17/94 In Memory of My Grandfather John Linwood Smith 3/24/1903 - 3/21/2001 When you lose someone it can be hard to take, the pain that I feel when my heart has to break. The memories I keep are all in my mind as I search my soul for more to find. The way their skin felt, the smell of their hair, the smile on their face. As I keep thinking over and shedding a tear, the years pass. Memories fade to gray, all is still in my heart, but I'm not getting any younger. I'll see them someday. Unconditional love is never forgotten, I look deep in my heart; it is there at the bottom, alone in the dark. Sometimes I hear voices from loved ones, I'm hoping to hear more. Years pass, they soon fly by, but I'm always looked upon from those in the sky. Surrounded by clouds and pure white doves, they listen and watch over me, sending me love. I remember one thing as I sit and I pray, they will be there to greet me. I will see them someday. Til we meet on the other side of that beautiful shore and the pearly gates of Heaven. I love and miss each of you more than words could ever be said.

“The Empty Tomb” I would like to offer you, the wonderful readers of this column, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I would like to offer you the chance to give up everything you own, and receive not one material thing for doing so. I would like to offer you the chance to be homeless and hunted. I would like to offer you the chance to suffer, and be ridiculed. I would like to offer you the chance to be killed in one or more of the following charming ways: crucifixion, beheading, stoning, being burned at the stake, or being eaten by lions. Interested? Good. All you need to do to get in on this fabulous offer is to make up a lie, and spend the rest of your life pretending to believe it... You likely know by now what I am driving at. In my last column I wrote about the crucifixion of Jesus. But praise God, Jesus did not stay dead! Romans 1:4 says that he is “declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.” Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all wrote of his resurrection, as did Paul. Jesus himself foretold his resurrection many times. And yet, in spite of all of the written testimony, there will always be some who not only disbelieve, but are positively “evangelistic” in their efforts to spread their disbelief to others. But if Jesus did not rise from the dead, the only possible explanation for the rise of Christianity is that a great number of men and women supposedly accepted the offer I outlined above. The recently deceased Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia put it this way some years ago. “It is not irrational to accept the testimony of eyewitnesses who had nothing to gain... the wise do not believe in the resurrection of the dead. So everything from Easter morning to the Ascension had to be made up by the groveling enthusiasts as part of their plan to get themselves martyred.” Obviously, that is not the case. The Old Testament prophesied and pictured the resurrection

in numerous places, the New Testament plainly describes it, and the results clearly testify of it. It was not one or two people who saw the resurrected Christ, it was hundreds. And they were all so convinced that it was really him, they gave up everything to tell everyone what had happened. These men and women were neither deceived nor deceivers; they were eyewitnesses of the greatest miracle this world has ever known. But why should we be surprised? The God who made life has no trouble raising the dead. Paul, a man who himself was convinced of the resurrection after he was confronted by the risen Christ on the Damascus road, wrote this in his first epistle to the Corinthians. “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: after that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.” He closed out that great fifteenth chapter by describing the result of the resurrection of Christ: “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” Happy Resurrection Morning!

How To Make An Offer They Can’t Refuse Buying a home can be very competitive. A well-maintained property with all of the bells and whistles that today’s buyers demand figures to attract many offers, and buyers who have found their dream homes must be prepared to make an offer that sellers can’t refuse. Standing out in a sea of other potential home buyers is not always so easy, but there are steps buyers can take to ensure their offer is the one sellers ultimately accept. • Get preapproved for a mortgage. Sellers’ patience may wear thin with buyers who are not preapproved for a mortgage when making their offers. Preapproval can speed up the selling process, as buyers won’t need to secure financing afterward. When sellers receive multiple offers on their homes, they are more likely to sell their homes to buyers whose financing is already lined up as opposed to buyers who have to scramble to secure loans. • Establish a strong rapport with the sellers. It’s not uncommon for homeowners to develop emotional attachments to their homes, and buyers should keep that in mind when viewing a home and negotiating their purchase. Sellers won’t want to hear about how ugly a home is or how much money buyers will have to spend to bring the home up to their standards. While buyers must weigh such variables when making their offers, keep it as cordial as possible and avoid any inflammatory remarks during the negotiation process. Sellers may be more likely to accept a lower offer from a buyer they like than a higher offer from someone they don’t like. • Don’t delay an inspection. When a property is drawing significant interest, buyers can set their offers apart from the rest by arranging for a near-immediate inspection. Some buyers may want sellers to give them a couple of weeks to arrange for an inspection, and that may irritate sellers who want to sell their homes as quickly as possible. Have an inspector ready to perform an inspection within days of making your offer. • Include an escalation clause. When making an offer on a home, prospective buyers can include an escalation clause. Such a clause acknowledges that a potential buyer is willing to increase his or her initial offer by a predetermined amount to exceed any bids that are higher than that initial offer. When sellers trigger such clauses, they are often required to show the other offers they received that triggered the escalation clause. Escalation clauses show the sellers you really want the house while keeping potential buyers’ hopes of buying the home alive when the bids are competitive. Prospective home buyers may find themselves in some stiff competition upon finding their dream homes. But a few simple strategies can make their offers stand out and increase their chances of buying their ideal homes.

“Gunsmoke” Comics

--Q: I was a big fan of the television show “Gunsmoke.” I purchased the first three comics released by Dell in 1956. They are in almost mint condition. Although I have no plans to sell them, I have always been curious about how much they might be worth. -- Steve, Casper, Wyoming A: I found your three comics listed in the “Standard Guide to Golden Age Comics” by Alex G. Malloy and Stuart W. Wells, and published by Krause Books. According to this reference, issue No. 1 is valued at $300, No. 2 and No. 3 at $175 each. Your comics were released in 1956 and are not to be confused with “Gunsmoke” issued by Western Comics in April and May of 1949. *** Q: I purchased a collection of 1,750 78-rpm recordings from an estate sale. The records are all songs issued on the Tops label and originally belonged to a distributor. They are still in their cardboard mailing cartons from the 1950s. I paid $2,000 for the entire collection and wonder where I can re-sell them. -Carlie, Temple, Texas A: The Tops Record Company was a dimestore label, not that there’s anything wrong with that, as Jerry Seinfeld would say. The problem is that 3BR 2BA Mobile Home for rent Fully remodeled, Heat/ Air, Prefer Senior Citizen, $450.mo. most of the artists that recorded for Tops are unknown, the arrangements lackluster and the discs of little or no interest to collectors. According to two dealers I contacted, Tops generally sell for less than 25 cents each, even in mint condition. Since the records are worth only a fraction of what you paid, selling this collection and recovering the $2,000 you invested will be virtually impossible. *** Q I have several dozen older books, and live in an area where my nearest book dealer is several hundred miles away. How can I find out how much my books are worth? -- Connie, Roundup, Montana A: One of the best resources for you is a nifty website, www.abe.com. Type in the name of your book and the author, and it will reveal where the book is being offered for sale and how much. Pay close attention to both the condition and edition, since prices will vary a great deal based on these two factors. --DEAR DR. ROACH: How can I find the most successful, experienced kidney doctor? Would I be better off with a doctor who has his or her own practice, or one who works in a hospital? My kidney function is at 32 percent, down from 44 percent four years ago due to hypertension. -- J.A.

ANSWER: I often have tried to point out when a teaching hospital or special expertise is critical to having the best chance for a good outcome. For chronic kidney disease, the expertise of the kidney specialist is seldom at issue, because virtually all kidney doctors are very experienced and are expert at taking care of this condition. The main goal will be to slow down the decline of kidney function, but many people in your situation eventually will need dialysis. In my opinion, what you want to look at carefully is the dialysis facility, which vary greatly in quality. I found a watchdog group with an interesting look at dialysis centers at http:// projects.propublica. org/dialysis/. This uses Medicare data to evaluate hospitalization, infection and even mortality. It’s not a perfect tool, but it gives you some information on which to base your decision. Find a doctor affiliated with the best dialysis facility around. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a generally healthy 81-year-old lady. I retired from teaching two years ago. I had a very strange situation about a month ago. I was sitting on the toilet and suddenly had pain in both my legs, and I could not move my feet, toes or any other parts.

My husband gave me two aspirin, which did not help the pain. He then gave me an oxycodone 5 mg from our son, who was recovering from a badly broken arm. The oxycodone worked after about an hour and a half, and I was able to get up and walk. My husband thought it was probably a leg cramp. I went to see my regular doctor the next day. He thought that I might have a blood clot in the leg and sent me to the hospital for more testing. After ultrasound testing, they did not find anything abnormal. I am now afraid to drive by myself or even to be at home alone. Do you have any idea what this might have been, or what I should do at this point? ANSWER: Sudden onset of pain and weakness does not sound like a blood clot to me. It sounds like a neurological event, such as a pressed nerve (actually nerves, since it was both sides). It is possibly in the brain or the spinal cord, but that seems less likely. A leg cramp usually would not be on both sides and usually does not cause weakness. I don’t agree with you taking your son’s oxycodone. It’s a very powerful and dangerous narcotic. Five mg is a relatively small dose, but people can be very sensitive to narcotics, and deaths have occurred from people using a friend or family member’s drugs. If your symptoms don’t occur again, I would suspect that this was caused by too much pressure put on the nerves. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Ingredients For the pie crust: 1¼ cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon sugar 1 sticks (1/2 cup) unsalted butter diced and chilled 2-4 tablespoons ice water For the filling: 1 cup sugar ⅓ cup cornstarch ½ teaspoon salt 3 cups milk 4 egg yolks- beaten 3 tablespoons butter 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2-3 bananas-sliced For the topping: 1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream 3 tablespoons powdered sugar 1 banana-sliced chocolate shavings-optional Instructions To make the pie crust: Mix flour, salt and sugar in a medium-size bowl. Add pieces of chilled unsalted butter. Using a pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add 2 tablespoons ice water and using your hands knead until dough comes together , DO NOT OVERDO IT!!! (If it’s still crumbly, add water a tablespoon at a time, up to 2 more tablespoons, but don’t use too much water or the crust will shrink while baking). Flatten the dough into disks, wrap in plastic and refrigerate at least 1 hour. Roll the dough on a floured surface into a 14-inch round, wrap around rolling pin and carefully unroll over a 9-inch pie plate and gently press into bottom and side of plate. Trim dough to a 1-inch overhang, fold under, and seal to form a rim, then crimp the rim with fingertips. Using a fork poke the bottom of the crust or use pie weights. Wrap with plastic wrap and set in the fridge or freezer. The dough must be well chilled before baking!!! Bake in preheated oven at 375 F until golden brown. Cool completely and set aside. To make the vanilla pudding: In a large saucepan, stir together sugar, cornstarch, salt and milk until smooth. Cook and stir over medium-high heat until thickened and bubbly(about 8 minutes) then reduce heat and cook and stir 2 minutes longer. Remove from heat and stir a small amount of hot filling into eggs stirring well (be careful not to scramble the eggs) return all to pan and bring to a gentle boil. Cook and stir 2 minutes longer. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla. Transfer to a bowl, cover, and chill for 30 minutes. Spread half of the vanilla pudding into cooled pie crust. Slice bananas and arrange over filling. Pour remaining pudding over bananas, cover and set in the fridge until thicken (for 6 hours or overnight). Before serving, make the whipped cream. Beat the heavy whipping cream on high speed until stiff peaks form, adding ½ tablespoon of powdered sugar slowly during mixing. Top pie with whipped cream and banana slices. Sprinkle with chocolate shavings if desired.
