YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS RECEIVE OVER $30,000 IN INVESTMENTS & SCHOLARSHIPS RILEY NUCKLES NAMED SAUNDERS SCHOLAR, TO COMPETE AT REGIONALS Twelve middle school and high school students from Danville and Pittsylvania County received over $30,000 in scholarships and start-up funding to take the next step towards launching and running their own businesses this past week. The students, who are enrolled in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) of the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce, presented their business plans to a panel of local investors last Wednesday evening at Danville Community College. Riley Nuckles, a sixth grader at Dan River Middle School and the CEO of Stand It, was named as the Saunders Scholar and will travel to Boca Raton, Florida, to compete in the YEA Saunders Scholar Regional Competition in May. From there, this student business will compete against other student businesses from all across the southeast for a chance to win college scholarships ranging from $25,000 - $50,000, an all-expenses paid trip to America’s Small Business Summit in Washington, DC, and, the opportunity to be on ABC Television’s hit show Shark Tank! Nuckles received $1,000 from the local investors for her business start-up. In presenting her pitch to the investors, Nuckles had just six minutes to convince judges to invest in her invention which is a light, portable, adjustable-height, folding table that is primarily designed to be used as a stand at the beach to keep food and other items off the sand. The stand can also be used for breakfast in bed or as a footstool. Colby Campbell, a seventh grader at Dan River Middle School and CEO of Cutie Pututie’s Designs, also impressed the panel of judges with his custom crafts which specifically designed as gifts for baby showers. Campbell received $1,000 from judges and received a $500 gift card from Sam’s Club to advance his business products which include tiered cakes made of disposable diapers topped with a plush toy, blankets, and pillow cases. Tutu & Things by Twins, a partnership between Kiasia and Tiasia Saunders, received $900 for their start-up. The Saunders’ sisters are seventh graders at Dan River Middle School. Their business focuses on custom-made tutus and bows for young female students learning dance, ballet, and gymnastics. DIY Customizations VA, a partnership between Andy Kong and Zyccheaus Motley, designs and sells t-shirts and other screen printed apparel items to school clubs, sports teams, small businesses, and special events such as family reunions. Kong is an eighth grader at Dan River Middle School, and Motley is junior at Dan River High School. The business received $800 from investors. Gabriel Shelhorse, CEO of Wonderland Sound Company, composes and produces customized computer-generated music and beats for aspiring hip hop artists and poets who want to set their words to music. Shelhorse, a junior at Gretna High School, was awarded $600 for his business start-up. Faith Doss, CEO of B-You-T-Ful, received $500 to start her new business venture. BYou-T-Ful features home-made spa products such as facial scrubs, specializing in all natural ingredients. The products help to keep skin vibrant and help to alleviate dry skin, rashes, eczema, and psoriasis. Doss is an eighth grader at Dan River Middle School. Drake Cassidy, CEO of Booktek, was awarded $300 for his business venture of custom, ghost-written, short-stories. Customers provide the scenario, characters, and premise for their story. Booktek will write the story, print it, and bind it. Cassidy is a sixth grader at Dan River Middle School.

Dear God, Did you really mean “do unto others as they do unto you? Because if you did, then I’m going to fix my brother! -Darla Dear GOD, Thank you for the baby brother, but what I prayed for was a puppy. -Joyce
Dear GOD, It rained for our whole vacation and is my father mad! He said some things about You that people are not supposed to say, but I hope You will not hurt him anyway. Your friend (But I am not going to tell you who I am) Dear GOD, Why is Sunday school on Sunday? I thought it was supposed to be our day of rest. -Tom L. Dear GOD, Please send me a pony. I never asked for anything before, You can look it up. -Bruce
... continued from front article Vinita Cunningham, CEO of Nina Roze Makeup Artistry, is a makeup expert who does makeovers, special-event makeup, trains customers in application techniques and latest styles, and will travel to the customer’s location. Cunningham, a junior at Gretna High School, received $300 to start her new business venture. Morgan Cook, CEO of Photo Treats, received $300 from investors to start her new business. Photo Treats is a mobile photography service specializing in custom pet photography. The business will also sell prints of animals and calendars featuring animals. Cook is a seventh grader at Dan River Middle School. Jadyn Nuckles, CEO of POP-aratzi, makes home-baked cake balls on a lollipop stick, dipped in delicious icing, and topped with colorful, edible candy decorations. Nuckles, a sixth grader at Dan River Middle School, received $300 from the investors panel. In addition to the investor panel awards, each student who completed the YEA program in Danville and Pittsylvania County received a $2,000 scholarship from Danville Community College’s Educational Foundation which can be utilized when they finish high school and if they attend DCC. The local business professionals who served on the Investor Panel were Shannon Hair, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Development of Danville Community College Educational Foundation; Philip Wright, General Manager of Ecomnets; Michael Duncan, Member Manager of Donnachaidh; Eva Doss, President & CEO of The Launch Place; Bebe Janish, Director of Physician Service of Danville Regional Medical Center; and Michelle Eakin, Store Manager of Sam’s Club. The judges praised the eorts and ideas of these emerging entrepreneurs. “Nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit in teens and teaching young people about starting a business or social movement build skills that will serve them well their entire lives,â€? commented Laurie S. Moran, CCE, President & CEO of the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce. “Introducing the students to business leaders and successful entrepreneurs in our community is invaluable! The Investors Panel has provided the students with the opportunity to take their business ideas from concept to reality.â€? Sponsors of the 2014-15 Young Entrepreneurs Academy in Danville and Pittsylvania County were Danville Regional Foundation, JT Minnie Maude Charitable Trust, Danville Community College, DCC’s Educational Foundation, the Barkhouser Free Enterprise Center, Ecomnets, the West Piedmont Workforce Investment Board, Danville Regional Medical Center, Donnachaidh, and Sam’s Club. YEA! is open to students between the ages of 11 and 18 and leads them through the process of launching a real business or social movement over the course of an academic year. By the end of the class, students own and operate fully-formed and functioning businesses, which may be carried after their graduation from the program. YEA! teaches students at an early age how to make a job, not just take a job. YEA! was developed at the University of Rochester with support from The Kauman Foundation. The program requires a seven-month commitment from its young executives. In that time they brainstorm and form their enterprises, make pitches to potential investors, obtain funding, register their companies with governmental agencies, and actually launch their own company or social movement. Business mentors, graphic designers, and local entrepreneurs support the students throughout the program and all of the learning is real and experiential. “One of the most interesting components of the program is the actual behind the scenes knowledge the students are given from local business leaders, who were at one time, standing in their shoes,â€? exclaims Moran. “The experience is something they will be able to apply to whatever field they choose to enter, thereby giving them the necessary skills to become future leaders of industry.â€? This year’s program will conclude in May. Recruitment eorts for the 2015-16 school year will begin in early summer. Students who are interested in learning more about the program can visit the Chamber’s website at HYPERLINK “http://www.dpchamber.orgâ€? www.dpchamber.org for additional information and an application. Businesses that would like to become involved can also visit HYPERLINK “http://www.dpchamber.orgâ€? www.dpchamber. org for details. Special to the Piedmont Shopper After reading NASCAR’s explanation on its laterace decision in Sunday’s Auto Club 400 at California Speedway, I’m still not convinced a debris caution was QHFHVVDU\ EHIRUH WKH ÂżQDO VFKHGXOHG ODS RI WKH UDFH IRUFLQJ WKH UDFH LQWR D JUHHQ ZKLWH FKHFNHUHG ÂżQLVK and denying Kurt Busch of an almost certain win. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Richard Buck attempted to answer the tricky questions asked by NBC Sports.com. “We got multiple reports over the radio and conÂżUPHG WKDW WKHUH ZDV D SLHFH RI PDWHULDO LQ WKH UDFLQJ groove and we went ahead and call the caution,â€? Buck explained. “By the time we called the caution somebody had hit it. I don’t have the piece back yet. We always ask the safety clean-up crews to return that to us, but there were multiple reports of debris on the track. “It’s strictly a process we go through. We don’t have any favorites. We try to keep our emotions out of it‌We work very closely in a very dynamic way to identify the situation and look for the solution to it. :H IHHO YHU\ YHU\ FRQÂżGHQW DERXW RXU DFWLRQV ´ Well said, Mr. Buck, but it’s seems a little ironic that NASCAR decided on a late caution with Busch, who has just returned from a highly publicized suspension, in position to win the race and earn a spot in The Chase. ,ÂśP QRW VXJJHVWLQJ D Âż[ EXW , KDYH WR TXHVWLRQ WKH many phantom cautions that are thrown at the most opportune time and why? NASCAR does itself no favors by being inconsistent. It reminds me of the VHDVRQ RSHQLQJ 'D\WRQD ZKHQ D ÂżQDO ODS PXOWL car crash occurred on the backstretch and NASCAR HQGHG WKH UDFH XQGHU FDXWLRQ %\ FRQWUDVW *UHJ %LĚˆH wrecked in Sunday’s race in California in an area where the leaders would have to race through the debris and there was no caution. Being inconsistence happens too often in NASCAR. When one decision contradicts another that fuels the speculation that procedure changes are made to suit one’s interest. We assume, like all other sports, NASCAR scripts all of its races to be fair and square. AcFRXQWDELOLW\ EHJLQV DW WKH WRS DQG 6XQGD\ÂśV ÂżQLVK WKDW denied Busch from winning the race was just another case of NASCAR’s consistently inconsistent polices that are questionable and damaging to the credibility of the sport. Hot dogs an issue at Martinsville Speedway: For almost seven decades now, Martinsville Speedway and its famous hot dogs have been compatible to its bump-and-run racing. But no more. 6SHHGZD\ ṘFLDOV DQQRXQFHG ODVW ZHHN WKDW WKH Virginia-based Valleydale Hot Dogs will replace the long-standing Jesse Jones Southern Style Hot Dogs at the speedway. Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell said the switch was a business decision. “Does anybody think I’m crazy enough to change something so iconic and so cherished as the ‘Famous Martinsville Speedway Hot Dog’â€?? Campbell told NASCAR Talk. “We’re not in the business of taking steps backward, we’re always going forward. The fans will still have the ‘Famous Martinsville Speedway Hot Dog,’ and it’ll be just as good as it has been. I’ll assure you of that. “We wouldn’t do anything to change that,â€? Campbell added. “Number one, my grandfather would come back and get me, and Bill France Jr. would be after me also. So we’re not changing it where fans will QRWLFH DQ\ GL̆HUHQFH ZKDWVRHYHU ´ 9DOOH\GDOH +RW 'RJV LV D VXEVLGLDU\ RI 6PLWKÂżHOG Foods, which is the primary sponsor of the Richard Petty No. 43 Sprint Cup Ford driven by Aric Almirola, and that most likely was the business decision that Campbell referred to. The removal of the Jesse Jones franks will end one of the longest-standing relationships between a speedway and vendor in NASCAR’s history, said a Jesse Jones spokesman. Roughly 50,000 hot dogs are served over the threeday weekend at $2 each.

AVERETT UNIVERSITY PARTNERS WITH MARINE CORPS
A Partnership For Success!
On Friday, Averett University announced the formation of a partnership with the United States Marine Corps (USMC) that will allow students to apply to the USMC's OďŹƒcer Training Program. The partnership will be beneficial to students who want both a military career and a college degree. This partnership, which is more than two years in the making, is similar to an ROTC Program. However, it's an untraditional program in that students who are enrolled take part in USMC training during the summer months. They will continue their academic coursework at Averett during the academic year. Then, once students graduate from Averett, they will be commissioned as an oďŹƒcer in the Marine Corps. "The USMC is always looking for exceptional young men and women to join their ranks," said Dr. Mary Vanderlinden, dean of student success. "This partnership provides an opportunity for them to work with our students who are interested in a military/ Marines experience. This is a win-win for Averett and the USMC." Vanderlinden led the committee of faculty and sta who were charged with devel-
oping a relationship with the military. Throughout the year, representatives from the Marines will provide leadership training programs and special lectures to Averett's students throughout the year. They will also be participating in our annual Aviation/Criminal Justice Day in the spring. Averett has long had a relationship with, and supported, the military. For several years now the university has been recognized as a Military Friendly School by Victory Media, which has ranked the university in the top 20 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that are working to help America's military and veterans as students. In addition, Military Advanced Education (MAE) awarded Averett University the designation of a Top School in its 2015 MAE Guide to Colleges & Universities, which measures best practices in military and veteran education. Currently, there are more than 300 members of the military (veterans, current service members and dependents) enrolled in programs here at Averett.

Far too many consumers with perfect credit have seen their credit scores plunge when they’ve been hit with medical bills. From delays in insurance company payments to medical providers, to needing payment plans to cover ODUJH H[SHQVHV LWœV EHHQ too easy for credit scores to take a hit ... when the only thing that ever went wrong was that someone got sick. Now the credit bureaus won’t put any medical debt on a credit report for 180 days. And here’s D ERQXV ,I D GHOLQTXHQF\ has been reported from medical debt, once that debt is paid, it will disappear from the credit report and not linger for long periods as happens with other types of debt. To read more about the coming changes, go to the New York attorney general’s website at www.ag.ny.gov and click Media Center, then Press Releases, and scroll down to the article.

Looking at real estate as a long-term investment is just one way approach a potential investment property. The following are a few additional considerations prospective investors should contemplate before buying an investment property. Location Many people are familiar with the real estate industry axiom, “location, location, location!” When buying an investment property, location is everything. A great location should outweigh your own personal feelings about the home, especially if you do not intend to live at the property. You will likely define a great location for an investment property differently than you would a property you intend to live in, so don’t let your own desires in a home cloud your judgement when choosing an investment property. Properties in safe neighborhoods that boast good schools and offer easy access to public transportation tend to make great investment properties. Décor Décor is another thing to consider when looking for an investment property. If you don’t plan to reside in the property, your opinion of the décor should not carry much weight. When viewing a property, try to imagine how much it might appeal to prospective tenants. Quirky properties typically do not appeal to as many prospective tenants as properties whose décor are similar to other homes in the area. Though you might find a tenant who prefers properties with unique interiors, a property that appeals to as many prospective tenants as possible often makes for a better investment and a lot less stress when the time comes to find tenants. Condition The condition of the property also must be considered before buying an investment property. Some investors want a fixer-upper, while others prefer turnkey properties that won’t require any elbow grease. The former type of property likely won’t cost as much as a fully renovated property, but those cost savings might be lost when it’s time to renovate. Find a property that’s in the type of condition you’re comfortable with. If you decide to go with a fixer-upper, learn the cost of your potential projects before submitting an offer. Cost Real estate makes a great investment, but don’t go overboard when buying an investment property. Before making an offer on a property, research rents in the area and the cost of insurance in that particular neighborhood. You want a property that essentially pays for itself, so make sure the rent you’re likely to collect is enough to cover your monthly costs, including the mortgage on the property, insurance and the costs associated with managing and maintaining the property.
B & H ANTIQUE AUCTION #871
Real estate investors often reap great rewards when selling their properties. But it’s still important for potential investors to consider a host of factors before investing in a property.
