Dena Denise Wilson

Dena Denise Wilson, 46, p a s s e d away on February 16, 2016 in Roanoke, VA. She was born January 6, 1970 to the late Linda Scott. She is survived by her son Bradley Harris, his fiance Jessica Nations, her three grandchildren Kensleigh, Katrinity, and Kaylee, her daughter Sydney Wilson, and special friend of seven years Kevin Wilcox. Friends and family came together to celebrate Dena’s life on February 26th, 2016, and are very thankful for the fellowship and support that day, and through this difficult time.

Dean Watson, age 63, of 677 Strader Rd. Chatham, entered into rest on March 1, 2016 at Chatham Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on October 29, 1952, in Pittsylvania County, the son of the late David Louis Watson and the late Hattie Barbour Watson. He is survived by his two sisters, Betty Watson Tosh of Chatham and Dellie Coward and her husband Perry of Callands; three brothers, Danny Watson of Chatham, David L. Watson, Jr. and his wife Jennie of Danville, Marvin Dale Watson of Chatham; seven nieces, Susan Barley and her husband Butch, Kathleen Childress, Tracy Watson Hines, Robin Watson Young, Jessica Thompson and her husband William, Chasity McMinnis and her husband Donald, and Adrienne McMinnis; and two nephews, Brad Reynolds and Jeremy Reynolds. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Jane Childress and Nell Emerson; and a brother, Freddy Carrington Watson. Funeral services will be conducted at the Watson Family Cemetery on Saturday March 5, 2016 at 12:00 pm. Blanche Anderson Woltz

Blanche Anderson Woltz, 87, formerly of 285 Sandy C r e e k , Church R o a d , Ringgold, VA, died, Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the Regency Care of Arlington, Arlington, VA. Born November 11, 1928 in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the daughter of the late George and Matlean Miller Anderson. She was married to the late Fred Woltz. Survivors include three

daughters, Sandra Lyles of Bowie, MD, Priscilla Jones (Robert) of Stafford, VA and Edna Briscoe of Los Angeles, CA; two sisters, Lena Ferrell of Danville, VA and Queen Street of Ft. Washington, MD; two brothers, Freddie Anderson and Jessie Logan (Viola), both of Danville, VA and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by three sisters, Delores Anderson, Carrie Clark and Mary Barksdale; one brother, Lenwood Anderson. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 11 AM from Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Anthony Pass officiating. Dr. John Theodore Meyer

Dr. John Theodore Meyer, Danville, VA, died Sunday, February 21, 2016. He was born July 31, 1931, in Lisbon, Iowa to the late William F. Meyer and Anna Hagan Meyer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Frances Jean Lovell Meyer. He is survived by his daughters Judith M. Greenwald and husband Lee of Columbia, MD, Beth M. Mitchell and husband, Kent of Gainesville, VA; His sons, John P. Meyer and wife Amy, Frank L. Meyer and wife Neal of Danville, Timothy A. Meyer and wife Stephanie, Steven F. Meyer and wife Katherine, of Raleigh, NC and Christopher G. Meyer and wife Michelle of Wake Forest, NC. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren; Erica, Jill, Sarah Beth, Caroline, John, Christopher, Mark, Julia, Taylor, Annalee, Cooper, Andrew, Patrick, Hagan, Jacob, John Frederic, William Paul, Savannah, Logan and Lily. John is survived by his identical twin and best friend, William F. Meyer, and sisters, Margaret Polglase and Rosalie Bean. He was predeceased by sisters, Marie Pryor and Marcia Meyer. John grew up in Blackstone, VA on his family farm. He graduated from Blackstone High School. He received a Bachelors of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Wisconsin, attended Virginia Polytechnic and State University, and received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, serving as First Lieutenant, supporting the First Infantry Division in Butzbach, Germany. John and Jean moved to Danville in 1960 where he began practicing veterinary medicine with his brother, at Meyer Animal Hospital (1960-1965); and from 1965 until April, 2002 he owned and practiced veterinary medicine at Westover Animal Hospital.

He was a member, former member and volunteer of many civic, professional, and scientific associations, including, Phi Sigma Society for the Promotion of Research in Biological Sciences, Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemical Fraternity and Alpha Psi Fraternity, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Central Carolina Veterinary Association, the Danville Veterinary Medical Association, the Jaycees, Host Lions Club (President 19701971), the Sight Conservation Committee (bringing the “first eyes” to Danville in 1965), Junior Deacon and member of the Senior Board of Deacons of First Baptist Church where he was a member until his death. John lived a Christ-centered life always surrounded by family and friends. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brother and sons and many family beach trips. John and Jean loved entertaining and spending time with their children and grandchildren. The Funeral service will be conducted at First Baptist Church on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend John Carroll officiating. A private interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Imojean Pizzino Hopkins, age 78 of Danville, died on Monday, February 22, 2016. She had been a resident at Holiday Village, in Danville and had been in declining health for several years. She was born on November 7, 1937 in Danville to the late Frank Pizzino Sr. and Addie Bowman Pizzino. She was predeceased by 2 brothers Wesley and Frank Jr. and a daughter Teresa H. Johnson. She is survived by her children, Marvin U. Hopkins and wife, Martha, and Darlene Farmer. She has 8 grandchildren, Yavonne Pittrell, Steve Hopkins, Andrea Hyler, Justin Hopkins, Courtney Bowman, John Goad, Mailon Farmer, and Jacob Farmer. She also has 11 great-grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild. There will be a private service for the immediate family at Townes Memorial

Sharon Elizabeth Denny

Sharon Elizabeth Denny, age 56, died on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health. She was born in Danville on February 11, 1960, she was the daughter of Jack Thomas Denny and Betty Jean McClanahan Denny who survive of Danville. Sharon was an active member of Grace-Design United Methodist Church where she had been Sunday school teacher, choir member and Director of the Pre-School. She had served on various committees through the years. She had retired from the Danville Public School System as a teacher after 32 years of service. She was a graduate of George Washington High School and Averett University receiving her Bachelors and Masters Degree in Education. Sharon was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Besides her parents she is survived by two sisters; Deborah D. McDaniel and Brenda Davis both of Danville. Also surviving are a niece, Jamie Elizabeth McDaniel and a nephew, Jerry Leonard McDaniel, Jr. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 3 P.M. from GraceDesign United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jay Summerlin, Reverend Kameron Wiles and the Reverend Tommy Shepherd officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. Polly Haymes Scott

Polly Haymes Scott, 95, of Danville, passed from this life Wednesday, February 24, 2016, after a decline in health since August 2015. She was born October 30, 1920, in Ringgold, Virginia. Mrs. Scott was employed by Thalhimers Dept. Store and later First Citizen’s Bank, where she retired. She was a member of College Park Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Secretary and Secretary/ Treasurer of the WMU for 46 years. She was a graduate of Dan River High School and Averett College. She was predeceased by her husband Maynard Willard Scott, her father and mother, John Lindsey Haymes and Virginia Clark Haymes; and sisters, Eloise Haymes Saunders, and Frances Haymes Gourley. She is survived by her son, Willard L. “Bill” Scott; daughters, Gloria S Van Allen (Chuck), and Virginia Ann “Ginny” Slade (Jerry). She is also survived by five grand children, 14 greatgrandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters, Nancye Haymes Rhodenhiser and Martha Haymes Thomas. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 28, 2016, from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. at College Park Baptist Church followed by a 3 p.m. Funeral Service at the same location. Interment and committal service at Highland Burial Park will follow the funeral service. Services will be conducted by the Reverend Doctor “CAM” McIntire and the Reverend Archer McIntire. The family thanks the staff of DRMC and Riverside Health Care for their loving care of their loved one. Marilyn V. Halstead

Marillyn V. Halstead, Danville, Va., passed from us on February 26, 2016. She was born on September 29, 1925 in Dovary, MN. She was predeceased by her husband, Claude Halstead Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Claudia Buccos (John), Fonda, NY; her son, Mark Halstead (Cynthia), Oldsmar, Fla; her sister, Lois Harvey, La Crosse, WI; her sister-in-law, Jan Lowe, Tomahawk, WI; her five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Marillyn was an Auxiliary Wave during World War II and was a charter member of the VA/NC Genealogical Society. By her request, no funeral service will be held.

Mary Magnolia Jenkins Fulton

Mary Magnolia Jenkins Fulton resigned of her earthly life into the arms of her Lord on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at the age of 83 at the Blue Ridge Hospice Care Center in Winchester, VA. She was born January 3, 1933 to late Nellie S. Jenkins and Clyde H. Jenkins, Sr. She was preceded in death of her husband Frank Hundley Fulton, Sr. in October of 2011. They were married in 1956 and had three sons, all of whom survive. The sons and their spouses are Frank Hundley Fulton, Jr. and his wife, Anna Maria Nunn Fulton of Danville, VA; William Johnson Fulton, II and his wife, Diana Dodd Fulton of Boyce, VA; and Charles Edward Fulton and his wife, Christie Austin Fulton of Danville, VA. She is survived by 10 grandchildren, Peyton Bryant Fulton and his wife Ashley Stanton Fulton; Benjamin Patrick Fulton and his wife Aleksandra Fulton; Jonathan Martyn Fulton and his wife Meredith Daly Fulton; Joshua Gideon Fulton and his fiancé, Kasey Roach; Morgan Anthony Fulton, Alexis Victoria Fulton, Jennifer Nicole Fulton, Justin Kenneth Fulton, Kenna Lyndsey Fulton, Camden Maddox Fulton. In addition, she is survived by three great grandchildren, Madison Brooke Fulton, Jonathan Martyn Fulton, Jr. and Drew Katherine Fulton. One sister, Carolyn Campbell McIver and her husband, Don McIver as well as many nieces and nephews also survive her. In addition, two older sisters and one older brother, Lossie Jenkins Hayes, Joyce Jenkins Turner and Clyde Hart Jenkins, predeceased her. Garnette Oakes Doak

Garnette Oakes Doak, 87, died February 23, 2016, at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Danville, VA, where she had been a resident for the past 7 years. She was born January 4, 1929, the daughter of the late Edward W. Oakes and Nannie McKinney Oakes. She was married to Raymond E. Doak, who died July 5, 1994; and she was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.


She is survived by sons, Johnny Doak and wife Debra, and Steve Doak and Tammy Finney of Danville, VA; daughter Susan Rowland and husband Don of Blanch, NC; grandchildren Jason Doak (Misty), Danville, VA; Wendi Puckett (Brian), Clayton, NC; Matt Rowland, Phoenix, AZ; Suzi Bryant, Richmond, VA; Miranda Bryant, Lynchburg, VA; and Bryson Doak, Danville, VA; and great grandson, Dawson Doak, Danville, VA. She is also survived by sisters Bell Odham, Raleigh, NC, and Clara Mae Hughes, Virginia Beach, VA, and brother Howard Oakes, Danville, VA. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by daughter Dianna Bryant; sisters Ella Harville and Thelma McMurtry; and brothers Charlie Oakes, Fred Oakes, Irey Oakes, and Ralph Oakes. Shirley Jean Worsham Wilford, 72, of 156 Forestdale Place, Apt. 108, Danville, Va. passed from this life on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. She was born May 2, 1943 in Danville, Va. to the late Virginia Johnson Worsham and the late John Ralph Worsham. She was also predeceased by her husband, David Driscoll Wilford. Shirley was a great animal lover. She was a homemaker and loved to help people, especially those who needed comfort and encouragement. Her gentle and quiet strength will be missed by her family and friends. Shirley was of the Baptist faith. Robert Thomas Lewis, Sr.

Robert Thomas Lewis, Sr., 94, of 1404 Spring Garden Rd died, Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Mr. Lewis was born in Danville, VA on June 13, 1921, a son of the late Charles Lewis and Myrtle Simmons Lewis. Mr. Lewis served in the US Army during WWII and retired from the US Air Force National Guard in 1982. He retired from Dan River Mills in 1981. He was a local tobacco farmer as well as an insurance agent. He was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent and teacher, and choir member. On June 17, 1946, he married Hilda Oakes Lewis, who survives. Survivors also include a son, Robert T. Lewis, Jr., and wife, Karen, of Goldsboro, NC; a daughter, Marilyn Grossman, and husband, Kim, of Chatham; four brothers, Paul, Clarence, Felix, and John Lewis and wives; four grandchildren, Carrie Miller (Derek), Kelsey Phillips, Chris Grossman ( Kyley), Jamee Grossman; two great-grandchildren, Shane & Sebastian Grossman. He was predeceased by a sister, Edith Lewis, and three brothers, Cabell, Fuller, and Leroy Lewis. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 26, 2016 at 2:00PM at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel conducted by the Rev. Michael Jones and the Rev. Curtis English. James Matthew Aaron, 68, 2325 Maple Road Callands, VA died Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for the past two years. Mr. Aaron was born in Danville, VA on December 7, 1947, a son of the late Matthew L. Aaron, Jr., and Virginia Holley Aaron. Mr. Aaron was a retired Tobacco farmer in the Callands Community. He was of the Christian faith.

Henry Dillard Hutson, 87, of 6998 Mount Cross Road died Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for the past year. Mr. Hutson was born in Draper NC on June 19, 1928 a son of the late John Henry Hutson and Cora Dill Hutson. Mr. Hutson was a retired truck driver for E&M Express. Mr. Hutson served in the US Army and was a member of Draper Christian Church. He was married to Sylvia Farmer Hutson, who died on March 18, 2005. Survivors include three daughters, Donna H. Barry Lamont Doss, age 71, of 3016 Westover Drive, Danville, VA, died on Wednesday February 24, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for the past three months. Born on June 27, 1944, in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Luther Gordon Doss and Helen Elizabeth Moore Doss. He lived most of his life in Danville, VA where he worked in sales. He attended Faith Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Doss was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in 1966 during the Vietnam Conflict. On December 16, 1977 he married Ruby Fleenor Doss who survives. Vernell Thompson Scearce died on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. Born Dec e m b e r 11, 1917 in Charlotte County, VA, Mrs. Scarce was the daughter of Mattie Sue Newby Thompson and Henry Edward Thompson. In 1937, she married Chester A. Scearce with whom she enjoyed a blessed marriage for over 75 years, living and working in Danville until the 1970’s, then in Wilmington, NC, Charlotte, NC and Deerfield Beach, FL, before returning in 1983 to Danville, where she joined the remained and active member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. Mrs. Scearce was predeceased by two sisters, Eldora Thompson Wallace and Margaret Thompson McKinney, and five brothers, Stonewall, Charlie, Clifton, Jack, and Champ Thompson. She is survived by her son, Donald and his wife Soncha, who reside in Honolulu, Hawaii, and numerous nieces and nephews. She enjoyed bowling, golf, playing cards and bingo. On December 23, 1954 she married Danny Daves Yates, who died on February 12, 2016. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Emma Martin, a sonin-law, Mark Ellis, and a great granddaughter. Mrs. Grubb was born in Union Hall, VA on July 22, 1928, a daughter of the late Guy Bennett Ramsey and Thelma Elizabeth Brown Ramsey. She lived most of her life in Danville and retired from the Danville Public School system as Principal at Westmoreland, Woodrow Wilson Middle School and Gibson Middle School. She also taught at Woodberry Elementary School, and was assistant principal atTaylor Middle School. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she served as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. She was a member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Women’s Educators and Excellence in Education. Docent and volunteer for the Danville Science Center and the Danville Fine Arts Museum. She served on the Board for Danville Arts and Humanities, the Community Services Board and the Dan-

ville Little Theater. She was instrumental in the start of the E.S.L. in the Dan River Region, and for the Danville Crisis Line, for whom she also volunteered. Mrs. Grubb was married to John Booker Grubb, who died on May 11, 2004. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Marcia Dawn Ramsey. Keenon Wayne Meetze Sr., 59, formerly of 1800 Orphanage Road, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Friday, Feb. 26, 2016.
