“A Kiss And A Question Of Sanity” After preaching for thirtythree years, I would think that new experiences in preaching would be difficult to come by. But after being kissed and having my sanity questioned in the middle of my message Sunday night, it seems I might just be wrong. Allow me to explain. Sunday night before service one of my precious crumbcrunchers inquired when I was going to “do a story” with them again. From time to time I preach in an unusual way; I bring a stool or chair down front, have all of the kids gather around, and I preach in a story format. It had been a while since I had done so. I went into the office for a while, prayed and sought God’s will, and determined to do so that very night.
and interrupted as I did odd accents for the palace dwellers in Egypt, cried like baby Moses in the river, did an impression of a feisty daughter of the Pharaoh, and parted the Red Sea. One precious little fireball, a girl of three years old, stood beside me the entire time as I sat telling the story. During a split second of a lull, she leaned over and kissed me on the cheek. As the church roared with laughter, I said, “That’s a first, usually people just glare at me when I preach!”
Why did Jesus use riveting stories to drive home spiritual truth? Why did Stephen give a lightning tour of history followed by a scathing application? Why did Paul tell Timothy to reprove, rebuke, and exhort? Preaching is different from every other form of communication because of the subject matter.
An dentist does not often need to shout, but a person warning of an awful place called hell often does.
