Where To Find Autism Resources The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that, as of 2014, autism spectrum disorder affects 1 in 68 children across the country. This new estimate is 30 percent higher than previous reports, which may be indicative of better measuring devices, more people coming forward or a greater prevalence of autism across the board. “Autism spectrum disorder,” or ASD, and “autism” are terms used interchangeably to describe a complex group of disorders that affect brain development. ASD may be characterized by difficulties in social interaction, repetitive behaviors, trouble with communication, and other conditions of varying degrees. The CDC points out that almost half of children identified with ASD have average or above average intellectual ability. Many children identified with ASD require special education services or some sort of therapy. While the widespread knowledge of ASD has made resources more available, not everyone knows where to turn when a child is first diagnosed with ASD. The following are some resources to get anyone started on his or her journey to information and assistance. The first step begins with a diagnosis. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children be screened for general development using standardized, validated tools at nine, 18 and 24 or 30 months and for ASD at 18 and 24 months or whenever a parent or provider has a concern. However, less than half (44 percent) of children identified with ASD were evaluated for developmental concerns by the time they were three years old. Plus, the CDC’s report “Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder among Children Aged 8 Years - Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network” found most children with ASD are diagnosed after age four, even though they can be diagnosed as early as age two. Pediatricians may be the first to diagnose autism. Should something seem awry during a routine developmental evaluation, a child’s pediatrician may refer parents to specialists who can do more in-depth evaluations to recognize signs of ASD. Pediatricians and specialists also can provide a wealth of information with regard to therapists and special education providers offering services for children with ASD. Many experts believe that early identification and therapies can be the most powerful tools people have to make a difference in the lives of children with autism.

Where To Find Autism Resources ... continued from front article Schools may also be a good resource for information on ASD. Parents can contact their local early intervention programs or school systems for free evaluations, after which parents may be put in touch with educators and therapists who can develop plans customized to children’s needs. Schools and parent forums also can be the ideal places to meet and confer with other parents of children with ASD. With more contacts, the network of information increases exponentially. A variety of resources also can be found online. The National Autism Resource & Information Center has the Autism NOW Center Local Agencies directory available through their site, www.autismnow.org. Individuals can browse agencies by state and find more information about programs in their communities. Autism Speaks is a premier resource that aims to offer support, information and resources to families dealing with autism. The organization helps people get early access to care, attend ASD events and even advocate for change where they live. Autism Speaks also has an Autism Response Team, specially trained to connect with families and oer information or answer questions. Autism Speaks Canada is the Canadian o-shoot of the organization. ASD aects millions of people worldwide. Each individual with autism is unique and may require a different set of resources. Fortunately, there are many assistance opportunities available.

EMAIL About a year ago my sister, who lives in Virginia, was talking with her four year old son, Brent. He was asking her why all their relatives from Wisconsin talk funny and sound like their noses are plugged up. “They think we have an accent,â€? she replied. “But they have an accent, right?â€?, Brent asked. “They talk funny?â€? “Everybody talks in dierent waysâ€? she tried to explain. “To them, we sound like we talk very slow and all our words are d-r-a-w-n out.â€? His eyes got big, and he whispered seriously, “Oh, no. You mean they hear funny too?â€?

How You Can Finance Your Home Improvement Projects ----Many homeowners recognize that improving and maintaining a property makes a home more livable for its inhabitants and more attractive to prospective buyers when the time comes to erect a “For Sale” sign in the front yard. But a well-maintained home also provides additional benefits. According to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, home improvements not only raise the values of individual homes, but they tend to raise neighborhood standards as well. Home improvements can create jobs and help local communities flourish economically. Maintaining a home can be a costly undertaking. Home improvement projects can be expensive whether homeowners hire professionals or tackle renovation projects on their own. The following are a handful of options homeowners can consider as they look for ways to finance renovation projects. • Paying outright: Paying for the renovations upfront and in full is perhaps the simplest way to finance a project. Homeowners who have the cash to pay for renovations outright won’t have to worry about interest rates or balloon payments. • Mortgage refinancing: Some homeowners tap into their home equity to cover home remodeling projects. Refinancing a mortgage means paying off the debt owed and starting over with a completely new loan. Refinancing comes with various fees and can cost between 3 and 6 percent of the loan’s principal. • Home equity loans and lines of credit: Both of these options are commonly referred to as second mortgages. When homeowners apply for home equity loans or lines of credit, they are borrowing against the equity value in their homes. A home equity loan is a term, or closed-end, loan. It is a one-time sum that will be paid off over a set amount of time with a fixed interest rate and the same payment each month. This is a onetime loan from which a person cannot borrow further. A home equity line of credit, or HELOC, is like having a credit card. It’s possible to borrow a certain amount for the life of the loan, which is a set time specified by the lender. During this time, homeowners

can withdraw money as it is needed up to the value of the line of credit. HELOCs typically have a variable interest rate that fluctuates and payments can vary depending on the amount of money borrowed and the current interest rates. • Title I property loan: Residents of the United States with limited equity in their homes may qualify for an FHA Title I loan. Banks and other lenders are qualified to make these loans from their own funds, and the FHA will insure the lender against a possible loss. Title I loans can be used for any improvements that will make a home more useful and livable. They cannot be used for renovations deemed luxury expenses. • Borrow against retirement funds: Some people opt to borrow against a 401(k) plan, IRA or another retirement fund. If the retirement plan allows a loan without penalty, it can be another way to secure funds. Because it is the homeowner’s money, there will be no credit check required and less delay in getting the funds. Borrowers should keep in mind that taking a loan against a retirement account will usually result in a lower retirement balance than it would have been had they not borrowed money from the account — even after the funds have been repaid. • Credit cards: Credit cards are an option when improvements are not expensive. Individuals with excellent credit ratings may qualify for cards with a no-interest introductory periods of several months or more. These cards can be a good way to pay off moderate improvements in a short amount of time. Many home renovation projects require homeowners to develop a home improvement budget. Homeowners are urged to explore all options and find the least costly loan method and the one that will present the best possibility for avoiding debt. -------

Beware of Scams Anyone can be a target of a scam…even me. Just a couple of days ago I received a phone call telling me that I had won $500,000.00. Of course in order to receive this money I needed to make a trip to Western Union to wire the funds to cover a delivery fee and taxes. The caller had no idea that they had just called someone that handled fraud cases and scams with a credit union. Here are some things to keep in mind to avoid becoming a victim of a scam. • Block any calls coming in from anonymous callers. On your landline this can be done by dialing *77. Check with your cell phone provider to ask for instructions for your cell phone. • When you wire money it is just like sending cash. You cannot reverse the transaction and you cannot trace where the money goes. Once you send the money it is gone. Do not wire money to anyone that is promising you money in return. • Don’t give out your personal or financial information unless you know the person you are dealing with. Never feel threatened, intimidated or pressured into giving out your personal or financial information. Remember that you always have the power to hang up the phone if you are suspicious or uncomfortable. • If it sounds too good to be true then it usually is. Check with authorities before you do anything.

Ingredients: Topping: 1/2 Cup all-purpose flour 1/2 Cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 6 tablespoons cold, unsalted butter 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts Cake: 2 Cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 1/2 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup mashed very ripe bananas 1/2 cup 2% low-fat milk Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9 inch baking pan with cooking spray. For the topping, combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and butter in a food processor and process until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in walnuts. (I didn’t break out the food processor for this, I just worked the butter in with my fingers to the same crumb-like texture). Set aside. For the cake, combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg and salt in a medium bowl. Beat butter with a mixer at medium speed about 30 seconds or until smooth. Gradually add sugar and beat 3 to 4 minutes or until fluy. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each. Add vanilla and bananas and beat until well blended. Add flour mixture alternately with milk, mixing after each addition only until smooth. Pour batter into prepared pan; sprinkle with topping. Bake about 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature. Serves 10 – 16, depending on how you decide to slice it.
