Sudie Shelton Pettibone

Sudie Shelton Pettibone, age 66 , of 2781 Mill Creek Rd. Chatham, entered into rest on April 9, 2016 at her residence in Chatham after a few years of declining health. She was born on December 25, 1949, in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of the late George Preston Shelton and the late Annie Craft Shelton. She was a member of Sheva Church of Christ. She enjoyed animals, especially cats. She also loved working with flowers. She is survived by her special friend, Bruce Taylor of Chatham; sister, Ann Shelton Robinson; two brothers, John Hurt Shelton and his wife Linda, George Kennedy Shelton and his wife Lynne, all of Chatham; two nieces, Cindy Marie Shelton, Christina S. White and her husband Jason; two nephews, Joshua T. Shelton and Zachary D. Shelton; a great-niece, Aislyn B. McGinnis; and a great-nephew, Jackson S. White. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lou Shelton. Graveside services will be conducted at Sheva Church of Christ Cemetery on Wednesday April 13, 2016 at 2:00 pm with Minister Mickey Witcher officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of George and Lynne Shelton, 1713 Transco Rd. Chatham. Ret. Sgt. Haywood Lee Harper

Ret. Sgt. Haywood Lee Harper, 75, of 155 Bell Drive, Danville, Va. passed away Monday, April 4, 2016, at his residence. He was born January 28, 1941 in Pittsylvania County, Va. to Sallie Morrison Harper and the late Willie Lewis Harper, Sr. Mr. Harper was also predeceased by his brothers, John A. Harper and Franklin D. Harper; and his brother-in-law, Joseph Harris. He was married to Dorris L. Harper. Prior to his retirement in June 1987, Mr. Harper proudly served his country for 27 years in the US Army. Mr. Harper is survived by his daughters, Deborah Moore-Tiko and Angela Harper-Mills, both of Greensboro, N.C.; his son, Scott L. Harper of Georgia; his sisters, Betty Gofney and Rena Daniels, both of Baltimore, Md., Sallie Harris of Danville, and Gloria Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; his brother Willie L. Harper, Jr. of Danville; as well as nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Lucinda Williams Motley, 85, of 152 J a m e s M o t l e y D r i v e , Pelham, NC died Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Riverside H e a l t h Care Center. Born December 20, 1930 in Rockingham County, NC she was the daughter of the late Burley Williams and the late Bethany “Bessie” Abbott Williams. She was married to the late Jack Dillard Motley, Sr. Survivors include one brother, Joe Nathan Williams of Eden, North Carolina; two sons, Jack Dillard Motley, Jr. (Delphine) of Clinton, Maryland and Ronnie Lee Motley (Catheryn) of Pelham, North Carolina; one daughter, Marion Motley Mitchell (Donald) of Blanch, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Ramon Motley, Daryl Motley (Yvette), Tyrone Mitchell (Stephanie), Eric Mitchell (Tangela), and Stephen Mitchell; seven great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Betsy Otis Curry, 86, of Danville, Va. passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Jessel Curry; children, Buddy Curry, Lynn Hanson, and Christy Laing; grandchildren, Justin Curry, Jessel Curry, David Curry, Gabrielle Curry, Nicolas Hanson and Katherine Hanson; brothers, Gerry Otis(Joanne) and David Otis(June); along with several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by mother, Minnie D. Boggs and her father, Howard T. Otis; her sister, Jackie Saunier; and brother, Howard Otis. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 2 pm at First Baptist Church with the Reverend John Carroll officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. John D. “Jack” Sullivan, born April 12, 1927 in Greensboro, N.C., p a s s e d away on F r i d a y April 8, 2016 after a decline in health for the past several months. He was the son of the late Harmon W. Sullivan and the late Lydia Hough Sullivan. He was a veteran of the U.S.M.C. 1ST Marine Division, 5th Regiment W.W.I.I., and the U.S.A.F., 526 F.I.S., squadron. Mr. Sullivan was married to Mildred “Mickey Reece” Sullivan who survives. In addition to his wife he is survived by a step-son, Howard Moore, and wife Lauren, of Danville, VA.; two stepdaughters, Cindy Anderson, and fiancée Gwyn, of Jacksonville, N.C., and Debbie Gentry, and husband Frank, of Providence, N.C.; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; cousins, June Trull, of Greensboro, N.C., and David Lee Sullivan, and wife Neeva, of FL.; and a niece, Marie Hill, of Brown Summit, N.C. Mr. Sullivan was an airplane mechanic for thirtyfour years and retired from Hughes Aircraft Co. in California. He loved aviation. He was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church in Brosville, VA. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 647 and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 1097 in Danville, VA. He was past Commander of VFW Post 647, present Chaplain, and a VFW Cootie. He was past Chaplain of Post 1097 where he was also an Honor Guard member for thirteen years. He was a very Patriotic person. Mr. Sullivan played tennis with the Hackers tennis group and played until he was seventy-nine. He raised canaries, African Violets, and collected stamps as a hobby. He loved big band music, bluegrass and classic movies. He loved animals and had several dogs during his lifetime. He also leaves behind a dear friend, Jess Pixley, and his little girl Jennifer Widner Terry “Doodle-Bug.” He also leaves behind special friends, numerous stepnieces and nephews, and members of the different groups he was a part of. He will be greatly missed for all he did for everyone. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Monday, April 11, 2016, at 2:00 P.M. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with Pastors David Hatcher and Roger Ewing officiating. James “Papa” Thomas, age 65, of 2355 Red Marshall Rd., Pelham, NC, died on April 07, 2016 at Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, NC surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 16, 1950, in Danville, VA, to the late Charles B. Thomas and Marion Lovelace Thomas. Mr. Thomas worked as a truck driver for Unifi Industries and was a member of Pelham United Methodist Church. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, farming, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his sons, Scottie Thomas and wife Angie and David Thomas and wife Melissa; daughter, Tammie Thomas; grandchildren, Austin Thomas, Andy Thomas, Jacob Thomas, Madison Thomas, and Logan Thomas; adopted grandchildren, Makenzie Lewis, Mikayla Lewis, and Chase Lewis; and siblings, Jackie Overby of Ruffin and Hilda Justice of Pelham. In addition to his parents Mr. Thomas was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Thomas and brother, Dennis Thomas. He was born on November 28, 1965, in Danville, VA, to Betty Adkins Daniel and the late Vincent Astor Kendrick. He was self-employed as a mechanic and siding installation. Mr. Adkins is survived by his mother, Betty Daniel; siblings, Gay Ann Adkins of Dry Fork, VA; Brenda Lee Gentry of Walnut Cove, NC; Betty Sue Mitchell of Morrison, TN; and Paul Fletcher Kendrick of Greensboro, NC; long-time companion, Amanda Willard; and numerous nieces and nephews. Margaret Mills Gravely

Margaret Mills Gravely, age 82, of 3853 Still Meadow Road, A x t o n , died at her daughter’s residence on Friday, April 8, 2016. Born in Pittsylvania County on August 5, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Jack Edmond Mills and Flossie Mae Meadows Mills. On August 7, 1969 she married Robert Lee Gravely who predeceased her. In addition, she was predeceased by her first husband, Jack Milam Sr. She was a school bus drive for Pittsylvania County Schools for 43 years and was a homemaker. She attended the Church of God. Mrs. Gravely is survived by her children, Lillian Robertson and husband David of Keeling, Patricia Davis of Ringgold, Jack Milam and wife Joan of Keeling, Darlene Asbury and finance David Rowland of Ringgold and Sharon Hawker and husband Kenny of Keeling. Other survivors are her brother, William Milam of Danville, and her sisters, Barbara M. McCormick and husband J. D. of Ringgold, Lois M. Neal and Elsie M. Taylor of Danville; seventeen grandchildren; thirtythree great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by a sister, Wyvonnie Milam Haley grandson, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter. He was born on December 23, 1945, in Danville, VA, to the late Charlie Lee Saunders Sr. and Jewel Marion Aaron Saunders. Mr. Saunders worked at Corning Inc. for 30 years in the forming department. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Saunders loved to play pool. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elsie “Jean” Saunders; children, Charlie Lee “Chuck” Saunders III of Pelham, NC and Michelle Leigh Griffin of Isle of Palms, SC; brother, Jerry Dean Saunders of Edgewood, MD; and five grandchildren. She loved her Lord, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Marshall was a special caring Christian lady. Bernice Patterson Elliott, age 86 of 156 Forestdale Place, Danville, died April 9, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born, September 23, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Ira Stanford Patterson and Kate Norton Patterson. She was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church. She graduated from Whitmell Farm Life School and attended Averett College in Danville. She worked as a District Sales Manager for Avon and most recently as a Real Estate agent in Danville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Elliott, Jr., her daughter, Susan Elliott Shelton, and her brother, Carlton Patterson. She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Elliott Smith and husband Harold of Tyler, TX, son, Ben Elliott III and wife, Sheila of Danville, son-in-law, Mark Shelton, and wife Kathy of Danville. Mrs. Adele Kabat Nakdimen, age 92 died Monday, April 11, 2016 at The Cypress of Raleigh. She was born in Logan, W. VA on January 20, 1924, a daughter of the late Samuel Kabat and Bess Ruth Kabat. Mrs. Nakdimen was married to the late Dr. Henry Nakdimen who died January 6, 1993. She was a member of Temple Beth Sholom, Wednesday Club, Women’s Dental Club and the Sisterhood of Beth Sholom. Mrs. Nakdimen attended the University of Ohio and Virginia Commonwealth University. Surviving are her daughter; Lynn N. Rosenthal of Raleigh, sister, Betty Lisson of Laguna Niguel, CA. Also surviving are three grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons.
