Come experience a great adventure, right here at your credit union! During the entire month of April, we’ll be celebrating National Credit Union Youth Month by guiding our young members through the jungle of personal finance and helping them get Wild About Saving! Be sure to have your mom or dad bring you by our Lowes Drive Branch on April 18 between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to get in on the biggest action of our Youth Month events. Local radio stations will be here, and we’ll have the Ariel Trapeze Academy, jungle themed activities, food and prizes for everyone! It’s all free for URW Community Federal members, so be sure to ask your mom and dad if you can come!
I’d be “lion” if I said saving was easy. Teach children how to save for their goals and they’ll have one of the most difficult aspects of finance under their belt by the time they’re teens— being consistent savers. Here are a few ideas to help your cubs get Wild About Saving: * Have young children—preschool age—sort different types of money into piles by color and size. * Play store or credit union/bank. Help them use a pretend cash register. * At the grocery store, let children of all ages help you shop. Teach them how to comparison shop—for example, show them that for every $4.85 box of cereal, there may be similar brands on sale for half as much. * As children get older, let them know what things cost. Share sales receipts and bills that you receive for items or services you’ve purchased for them. * If you decide to pay your children an allowance, include them in the decision. Discuss allowance amounts and what they should use their allowance for. The amount is your call, but allow their input. One idea is to have children set aside part of their allowance for spending, part for saving, and part for sharing. Explain what you’ll pay for and what they should be responsible for. For example, when you’re at the movies, maybe you agree to pay for movie ticket, but the Milk Duds are on them. * As they reach high-school age, clarify what you will pay for and what your teens are responsible for. For example, they may want the newest cellphone that comes with a really high price tag. Establish your spending limit. If they still want the more expensive version, have them make up the difference. Often, once the responsibility of paying for items is on them, the “latest and greatest” aren’t as important. Get your children started right financially. Bring them in to URW Community Federal we have more ideas to help you teach them to get Wild About Saving!

The weather is warming and that means windows are being opened to let in fresh air and warm breezes. The advantages to open windows are many. But one particular disadvantage is the safety hazard open windows present to young children. More than 5,000 American children are injured each year after falling out of windows, says the Center for Injury Research and Policy at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. Two-thirds of these children are toddlers, and a quarter of all injured are hurt seriously enough to require hospital admittance. Montreal Children’s Hospital says they treat roughly 10 children a year who have fallen from a window. Due to toddlers’ high center of gravity (a head that is particularly heavy), most topple over and land head-first, which can have devastating effects. Falls from windows can cause serious injuries and even death. However, the accidents are largely preventable. Many recall the tragic 1991 incident when musician Eric Clapton’s son, Conor, fell to his death from an apartment 49 stories up in a Manhattan highrise. Conor, age 4, allegedly darted past a housekeeper who had left the window open after cleaning and fell out of the window. The song “Tears in Heaven” was subsequently written by Clapton for his son. Children are often insatiable in their curiosity and desire to see what is happening in the world around them. Goings-on outdoors can be fascinating, and it is not farfetched to see children leaning up against windows and screens to get a better view of outdoors. A window screen can easily dislodge and provides no barrier from a fall. Parents and guardians of young children should add window protection to the list of safety gear they use to childproof a home. There are many varieties of window guards that attach to windows and provide a measure of security against falls. Some of these safety devices are bars or grills that install into place but can be easily removed by an adult in the event the window needs to be used as an emergency evacuation point. Window gates can be used on larger, swing-out windows to form a barrier for children. There are also locks and latches that restrict how much a window can be opened. Some areas of the country have made it law to have window guards on second story windows where children under age 10 are in residence, particularly highrise apartment buildings. Even falls from ground-floor windows can cause injuries. It’s important to check with a landlord or with a municipal office about the requirements with regard to window guards. In addition to the installation of window guards, there are other safety steps that help prevent window-related falls. * Keep furniture away from windows. Children can climb on the furniture and have better access to windows. * Keep beds away from windows, especially in a child’s bedroom. Children may horse around on a bed and bounce through an open window if the bed and window are not far apart. * Routinely inspect the hardware and construction of the window to ensure it is secure. Periodically check the fit of a window guard to make sure it is properly installed. * Do not open windows wide in children’s rooms. A few inches is all that’s needed for fresh air. * Make sure children know they are not allowed to play next to open windows or to try to climb up to windows.

Officers at a military installation were being lectured about a new computer. The training officer said the computer was able to withstand nuclear and chemical attacks. Suddenly, he saw that one of the officers had a cup of coffee and yelled, “There will be no eating or drinking in this room! You’ll have to get rid of that coffee.” The officer said meekly, “Sure, but why?” “Because a coffee spill could ruin the keyboard.”

An engineer, a psychologist, and a theologian were hunting in the wilderness of northern Canada. Suddenly, the temperature dropped and a furious snowstorm was upon them. They came across an isolated cabin, far removed from any town. The hunters had heard that the locals in the area were quite hospitable, so they knocked on the door to ask permission to rest. No one answered their knocks, but they discovered the cabin was unlocked and they entered. It was a simple place ... 2 rooms with a minimum of furniture and household equipment. Nothing was unusual about the cabin except the stove. It was large, pot-bellied, and made of cast-iron. What was strange about it was its location ... it was suspended in midair by wires attached to the ceiling beams. “Fascinating,” said the psychologist. “It is obvious that this lonely trapper, isolated from humanity, has elevated this stove so that he can curl up under it and vicariously experience a return to the womb.” “Nonsense!” replied the engineer. “The man is practicing the laws of thermodynamics. By elevating his stove, he has discovered a way to distribute heat more evenly throughout the cabin.”

“With all due respect,” interrupted the theologian, “I’m sure that hanging his stove from the ceiling has religious meaning. Fire LIFTED UP has been a religious symbol for centuries.” The three debated the point for several hours without resolving the issue. When the trapper finally returned, they immediately asked him why he had hung his heavy pot-bellied stove from the ceiling. His answer was succinct. “Had plenty of wire, not much stove pipe.”

ELITE!!!! Congratulations to 434 ELITE BALLERS for being the runner-up in the USS 4th ANNUAL SIGNATURE CLASSIC that was held in Winston Salem on April 11th. Although they only had seven players present they put in work. These young men had to play through schedule changes and in front of hostile fans. Not to mention the officiating was not the best. But through it all they finished strong. So with that being said you guys are still Champions in my book. So keep your head up and keep putting in work and you will achieve. Love you guys!

Sometimes being versatile can save a day at the lake. For instance, last week my buddy and I set out to catch catfish and/or striped bass at Leesville Lake. We spent about an hour in two different spots, striking out in both. We feared wasting a day fishing, so we motored the “Ledge Dog” (my boat) into the shallows of a nearby cove. Using bait worms and small homemade in-line spinners, we cast around until we began to catch small white bass. I don’t know how many we caught, but it was enough to entertain two grown men for almost two hours. I guess the moral of this story is that versatility can turn a bad day fishing into a successful day of fishing. Bobby Mitchell- Expert/Master Angler, VA

--Q: My grandparents were married in 1920, and one of their wedding gifts was a pair of candlesticks made by Rookwood. They feature a blue and turquoise matte glaze. Do you have any idea of how much my candlesticks are worth? -- Billie, Athens, Georgia A: I found your candlesticks referenced in “Warman’s Rookwood Pottery: Identification & Price Guide” by Denise Rago and Jonathan Clancy. Your candlesticks were produced in 1919 and are valued in the $150$250 range, according to this guide. *** Q: My mother has an oil painting that was done by A.R. Shulz. Do you know anything about the artist and how much it might be worth? I am enclosing a self-addressed envelope for a quick reply. -- Irene, Lombard, Illinois A: The self-addressed envelope you sent me was a waste of money, since all questions I answer appear in this column and no personal replies are possible. Because of the volume of mail, not every question received can or will be answered. Adolph Robert Shulz was born in Wisconsin in 1869. He studied with William Merritt Chase and eventually traveled to Paris. Shulz opened a studio in Munich but returned to the United States in 1917 and settled in Brown County, Indiana. for his landscapes. Shulz died in 1963. To determine the value of your painting, I suggest you contact a professional art appraiser. You might begin with the American Society of Appraisers, 11107 Sunset Hills Road, Reston, VA 20190; ASAinfo@appraisers.org; and 800-272-8258. *** Q: I have older postcards, including some from the early 1900s, and would like to find other collectors so I can sell them. Can you direct me to people who might be able to help me dispose of my collection? -- Tom, Three Churches, West Virginia A: The Ephemera Society of America was formed in 1980 “to cultivate and encourage interest in ephemera.” Ephemera is defined as items that are short-lived or transitory, such as circulars, tickets, matchbooks and, yes, postcards. This is an especially good organization for people who collect or have paper memorabilia. Contact is the Ephemera Society of America, P.O. BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper It was not surprising when rumors surfaced that the pairing of the most successful driver-crew chief combination in the history of NASCAR may be in trouble. A pairing that netted six championships was suffering from burnout, and was on the verge of going their separate ways. But then came Texas, and Jimmie Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus proved once again that they are very much in the hunt of a seventh championship by winning for the second time this year in Saturday night’s Duck Commander 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Despite a pair of wins in the season’s first seven races, the Johnson-Knaus combo hasn’t been up to its usual consistency of running well week-to-week. “Our intermediate (track) program is probably as good as it’s been in the last year,” Knaus said in a post-race interview. “We’re making huge, huge gains, but we need to get a lot better. We’ve got to press hard to get where we need to be, where the 48 was a few years ago. “It was a great week off. Jimmie came in ready to go. He was energized. The weekend was good for everybody, and we came here to Texas on our tiptoes and ready to go racing.” This may be bad news for the competition. “We just keep plugging along and trying to get better,” Johnson said. “I think the week off was good for us to sit down and relax, reboot and come back to the track with a fast race car that was good all weekend. Its fun when you have a great car and it drives well.” Two races ago at Martinsville, the car was so bad and so slow Johnson got lapped. The pair squabbled like an old married couple. Nothing was going right, and an intense radio exchange between the two about what was wrong with the car turned out to be nothing more than a power steering issue. But Martinsville wasn’t the only race this year that tension was at the boiling point between the two. And Johnson was first to admit he wasn’t happy with the performance of his cars….and Knaus was lost for words to explain why. The Johnson-Knaus union has always been edgy, and being that way keeps the team clicking. Sure, Martinsville was a bad race, but still they are far better off together than apart. They were frustrated, but they rolled into Texas with a better attitude and ready to race. Yes, the 48 car was fast Saturday night, and if you could stay awake through 129 commercials and another boring race it was Johnson who led the most laps and held off the late charges of Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to establish himself as one of the favorites to win this year’s championship. Harvick and Johnson are the class of the field this year with two wins each. They’ve dominated the 1.5-mile speedways which comprises 11 of 36 races of the regular season and half of the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup title. “Stats don’t lie, and the stats that those guys or really anyone with a Hendrick engine or chassis is going to be capable of winning right now,” said Denny Hamlin following an 11th-place finish at Texas. “We just can’t drive through the field like those guys are capable of. We are a work in progress right now.” This is by no means a two-car race for the championship. The Fords of Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano have been fast, while the Toyota teams are still searching for speed. At the moment, there seems to be no friction between Johnson and Harvick, but it’s not too early for Harvick to play the mind game. “Maybe they drilled more holes in their tires than we did.” Harvick said with joking references to the recent tire issue in NASCAR. Too early for that?

How to write your own

last will and testament Few people, young or old, look forward to writing a will. A will is not an easy subject to broach, but it is important to have documents in place to ease the burden for family members. When a person dies without a will, his or her assets might not go where he or she intended. In some instances, assets might go to the government. For parents who die before their children are grown, a will can also serve as a legal document indicating a plan for custody of the kids. Although it is often preferable to consult with a local estate-planning attorney who understands the language and legalities surrounding a will, it is also possible to write a will yourself. There are forms that can be purchased from office-supply stores, or a will can be prepared online by answering questions and then generating a form to print. The will also can be typed or handwritten. Handwritten wills are called holographic wills and may not be recognized unless written during an emergency situation, such as a fatal illness. Laws regarding wills vary based on where you live. Therefore, learn the legalities before preparing a will so you will have a document that holds up in a court of law and can be executed to your desires. Here is some of the basic information that may be included in your will. * Include your name, address, date of birth, and social security numbers if they will better help identify you should there be confusion. * State that you are of sound mind when writing this will and of contractual capacity. * Write a statement indicating that this will revokes all other wills that may have been executed before. * List the names and addresses of all of your children. If the children are minors, at this point you can also specify your wishes with regards to their guardianship. List the names and addresses of the people whom you wish to have custody of your children. * Appoint an executor or executrix to carry out the affairs of your estate and instructions specified in the will. This person typically must be over the age of 18. Select someone whom you trust to honor your wishes. * Indicate how you want the executor to handle your financial affairs, including paying taxes, funeral costs, final expenses, etc. At this point you also may want to spell out where you would like to be buried and any specific requests with regard to the funeral, viewing, and any other funeral-related details. * Indicate the executor has permission to sell your home and personal belongings that are not included in personal gifts to be distributed. * List any gifts you would like to be distributed to certain people. This may be a doll collection to a daughter, coins to a son, china to an aunt, etc. * Specify the percentages of your assets to be distributed should the listed beneficiaries survive you. Maybe you want to divide your estate evenly between two children. If so, allocate 50 percent to one and 50 percent to the other. You may have more specific breakdowns. Should these people not survive you, you can establish an alternate or list nothing, in which case the assets will be put back into the general pot. * Include a residuary clause that states how to distribute any remaining assets. * State whether you want the executor to be reimbursed for any expenses that result from executing the will. * Indicate that you would like the executor to post bond as a form of insurance so that the executor can’t run off with the money for himself. * Name an alternative executor should the first pass away before executing the will or if he or she is unable to serve upon your death. * Sign the will in front of two or three witnesses (check what is required where you live) and a notary public. The witnesses cannot be anyone named in the will. This article is intended as general information about what is typically covered in a standard will. It should not be taken as legal advice. Prior to implementing any of these tips, consult with an attorney certified in estate planning.
“The Sculptor’s Best Hammer” A few years ago my family and I went through the hardest trial we had ever thus far known. There were days the stress were so overwhelming that I did not know if we would make it. We repeatedly cried out to God the most oft asked question of a child of God: why? There were tears, broken hearts, and fears for the future. During that time God, for reasons I will not go into here, used the trial to motivate me to write more. I had already published one book, but the severe trial became a tool in his hand to convince me of the wisdom and even necessity to really dedicate a great deal of time and effort on the product of the pen. One thing he seemed to drive me to do is what you, the reader, are now looking at: a weekly faith column. It would be often lighthearted and humorous, sometimes poignant, usually selfdeprecating, but always with a Scriptural admonition and a spiritual goal in mind. After months of effort, a local paper picked up the column, and then another, and another. The column now runs in eleven (and sometimes twelve) papers in five states. Which brings me to this: just a few hours ago I received a phone call. A man who
ministers in prisons told my father-in-law that a man behind prison bars read one of my recent columns, and accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. We went through a trial so severe that at times I felt I could not even speak. The feeling of not being able to speak moved my hands to write. The writing has produced more than a dozen books, hundreds of newspaper columns, and partially because of one of those columns a precious soul has been redeemed! It never would have happened without the agonizing pounding of the Master Sculptor’s hammer. You see, quite often the best hammer God has at his disposal for molding a servant or furthering the gospel is the hammer of trials and hardships. It was when violent persecution fell on the church at Jerusalem that Acts 8:4 says “Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.” Later, Paul, the very man who started that persecution got saved, and God sent him into the service of the Lord. God told Ananias concerning Paul “I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake.” Fanny Crosby was blinded in childhood by a doctor’s careless mistake. She spent the rest of her days in darkness, yet it was that
very trial and trauma that God used to mold her into the greatest hymn writer of all time. Corrie Ten Boom suffered incredible loss in the concentration camps of World War II. Out of that trial came the book The Hiding Place, perhaps one of the greatest books on forgiveness ever written. The spiritual blocks of rock that we are come unshapen, unwieldy, bulky, and very much indistinguishable from all of the other spiritual blocks of rock around us. Those that submit themselves to God for service cannot expect to remain in the shape they are. What they can expect is for the Master Sculptor at some point to pull out his best hammer, that of trials and hardships, and begin to ruthlessly beat away everything that does not resemble exactly what he has in mind for a finished product.
The process is not pleasant. The product surely is.

1. What were the last names of the British duo that had a hit with “A World Without Love”? 2. What year did “Love Is Here and Now You’re Gone” hit No. 1 on the charts, and who released it? 3. Name the rock group whose fifth album was titled “Selling England by the Pound.” 4. Who released “New York Groove” in 1975? 5. What is the American name of the song whose lyrics mostly consist of: “Wee-ooh wim-o-weh, wee-ooh wim-o-weh.” Answers 1. Asher and Waller ... aka Peter & Gordon. Asher’s sister once dated Paul McCartney, who wrote a few of P&G’s hits, such as “Nobody I Know.” The songs were credited as written by Lennon–McCartney, however. 2. The Supremes in 1967. They performed the song on the Andy Williams show, which launched the song up the charts in the next two weeks. 3. Genesis, in 1973. 4. British group Hello. 5. “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” released in 1961 by The Tokens. Alternately known as “Wimba Way,” “Awimbawe,” “Wimoweh” and “Mbube,” the song was originally written in Zulu. Numerous folk artists put their own spin on it over the years, including The Weavers and The Kingston Trio. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
Into the Fire
--Opening Day for Major League Baseball was a rather lackluster affair this year. The only record of note that was set was one related to payroll -the Dodgers have a $270 million one -- and that’s kind of hard to cheer for. “Yay, payroll!” In the Bronx, it was 1 A.D. (after Derek). They say the Yankees are the most improved team in baseball defensively, just by replacing him and A-Rod on the left side of the diamond. Seeing the shortstop Didi Gregorius throw lasers to first without having to jump, they may be right ... but Jeter wouldn’t have made the last out of an inning trying to take third base. Anyway, that’s about it for the youth movement with the Yankees. They are old. Joe Torre threw out the first pitch, and half the stadium thought he was young enough to be the starter. There seems to be little doubt that their ace Masahiro Tanaka will need Tommy John surgery at some point. You know that Mark Texeira and Carlos Beltran are going to get hurt. It’s nerve wracking to watch the Yankees. It’s like watching a senior citizen with a bag full of groceries trying to walk across an icy parking lot. Meanwhile, Red Sox fans were paying $8 for beers and having a blast, but the ownership was STILL griping about how much money they were losing by playing at Fenway Park ... the last of the cool stadiums in America. It never ends with those guys. They make a kajillion dollars a year, but they want more and

more and more. They can’t be happy with just making Fenway into the greatest experience it can be. No ... they have to blame dark forces like the Yankees. That is why they must move to some saccharine suburb and ruin the whole thing for everyone. That brings us to Wrigley Field, which was somehow transported to Yemen on opening day. The unfinished bleachers were covered with a blanket, and there were no bathrooms. Not even Porta Pottys. I used to cover up my laundry piles in college with a blanket so my girlfriend wouldn’t see them, but then I wasn’t a baseball exec. And even the smallest festival director in whatever small town around say, Glenview, knows that people go to the bathroom after drinking beer in the sun. What is the matter with the Cubs organization? Seriously. What is it about you that has gone so terribly wrong for so terribly long? How many times have you made Bill Murray cry? You know, according to “Back to the Future Part II,” this is the Cubs’ year, so you’re making Michael J. Fox look bad on top of it all. How do you sleep at night, Cubs management? It doesn’t matter. I see the White Sox and Nationals as the top contenders for the throne ... the Dodgers in that mix, too. But October is a long way off. We all know what the beginning of summer is for: Stanley Cup hockey! Baseball can wait. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

PICKS OF THE WEEK
“Paddington” (PG) -Alone in London, wandering about with a big floppy hat and raincoat over his fuzzy fur, a talking bear fails to grab much attention, even though he’s the incarnation of everything adorable. The bear is taken in by the Brown family, who name him Paddington after the station where they found him. Stern-butloving dad (Hugh Bonneville) and open-hearted mom (Sally Hawkins) give Paddington a temporary home while finding him permanent residence and avoiding a conniving taxidermist (Nicole Kidman). Those who have read the books -- or had the books read to them -- will be relieved to find that this actually is a decent, charming movie. It’s not stupid, it has great visual style, tons of puns and a love for the character. “The Wedding Ringer” (R) -- An awkward, sweaty, fidgety guy, Doug (Josh Gad), is about to marry way out of his league (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting), but he’s got no best man, and no groomsmen at all to match his bride’s side. In comes Jimmy (Kevin Hart), who sells best-man services. For the right price, he’ll be your best man, the life of the party, and make you look good. Hart and Gad are both real comedic talents, feeding into characters, each within their comfort zones -- but the chemistry isn’t happening. You’ll laugh, certainly, but this isn’t the new must-see weddingrelated guy comedy. “The Gambler” (R) -- An English professor and hardcore gambler, Jim

PADDINGTON Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), is an expert at putting it all on the line. Jim is in trouble with Bank of Mom (Jessica Lange) after he runs up huge debts with the boss (Alvin Ing) of the local gambling den. Not getting the message, Jim takes a huge loan from the kind of guy you don’t borrow money from (Michael K. Williams), and then wades deeper into the gambling underworld. As a remake of the James Caan original from the ‘70s, Wahlberg’s turn just doesn’t match up in style. He commits to his macho man on a mission, but what’s the mission? There’s not much substance in his self-destruction. “The Boy Next Door” (R) -- How bad does a movie have to be before it’s actually fun to watch again? Realizing that their movie wasn’t in the same galaxy as good, the makers of this film must have decided to shoot for the so-bad-it’sgood zone. Jennifer Lopez plays a recently separated schoolteacher who doesn’t have a shred of believability. She sets her eyes on the hunky 19-year-old next door (Ryan Guzman), and then they have bedroom times. Too bad for Lopez that when she tries to end it, the beefcake turns into a classic psycho.

Q: I recently rewatched “Napoleon Dynamite,” and it made me wonder what Haylie Duff has been up to lately. Can you fill me in? -- Valerie D., via email A: The soon-to-be new mom’s Cooking Channel show, “Real Girl’s Kitchen,” starts its second season on Saturday, April 25, at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT. I spoke with the multitalented actress/singer/ hostess/cook recently, and she can’t wait for viewers to join in the fun of her series’ new season. For those unfamiliar with the show, here’s how Haylie describes it: “It really just is about a real girl in the kitchen -- it’s me, learning how to cook, and sharing recipes that I love, and cooking for my family and my friends. The format is very loose, and every episode is different. We get out of the kitchen a lot. A fun way to share your love of food with someone is to get out there in the field, so to speak, and going to farms and farmers’ markets. We describe our style of food as ‘healthy decadence.’ It’s a balance of healthy food and indulgent things as well.” What can we expect for season two? “I had a surprise birthday for my mom,” Haylie reveals. “I love to mess with my mom. And she hates to be on the show, but she’s so funny, I force her. She’s a riot. Everybody loves Mama Duff. There are a lot of my friends on the show and my family. We do a great Italian episode. My fiance is Italian, and he’s always giving me a hard time, saying Texas girls can’t make Italian food. So I set out to prove him wrong. It’s just real loose and fun.” ***

Q: I am so upset that “Parenthood” is over. Can you tell me what series star Craig T. Nelson will do next? -- Paul Y., Indianapolis A: Craig is all set to reprise his role of Coach Hayden Fox on the NBC revival of “Coach.” NBC gave the show a 13-episode straightto-series order, with Craig returning as Coach Fox, where the now-retired football coach is called back to become the assistant coach to his own grown son, who is now the new head coach at an Ivy League school in Pennsylvania that is starting up a new team. There is no word yet on its premiere date or other casting info, but Barry Kemp -- who created the original ABC series -- is on board to write and executive-produce the reboot. *** Q: When will “Ray Donovan” be back for a new season? -- Howard T., via email A: The Liev Schreiberstarring drama returns to Showtime for its 12-episode third season July 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. This season’s guest stars include Ian McShane, Katie Holmes and Elliott Gould. “Masters of Sex” returns for its third season as well, which also happens to be 12 episodes, immediately following “Ray Donovan.”

Are you about to take one of the most important steps of a lifetime, the selection and purchase of some kind of real estate? If you are like thousands of others, you are seeking something in the country or in a small town. You see, more and more Americans are moving to small towns or in the country to establish a lifestyle away from the big city or suburbs. If you have decided to make this move, finding what you want might appear impossible. But this decision doesn’t have to be overwhelming, so if you don’t have an inside track about what’s for sale and where, it is time to consult a professional. What’s the first thing to do? Find free real estate publications that have properties in the areas where you want to buy. Or, use the internet to select the area and type of properties you are interested in. This will also guide you in finding a licensed real estate professional that can assist you in finding a property quickly and efficiently. Remember, many small town or country real estate companies serve a large surrounding area. Once you have selected a realty professional, discuss with him/her the type of property that is suitable for your needs. To do this, you must ask yourself some questions. 1. 2. 3. 4.
Is my family still growing? What are their needs? Are schools a factor? Do I want minimum grounds upkeep? Maybe just a garden? 5. Do I plan to own horses or several animals? 6. Do I need to be within commuting distance of a certain town for job possibilities? 7. Am I a fixer-upper, or a total zilch with a hammer? 8. Will I be using it as a second home? 9. Will I keep the property to use for retirement or as investment? 10. What is most important about the lifestyle I want to accomplish? 11. Next, provide information to the salesperson about what you can afford. This way, he/she has the tools to assist you, including how much a bank may lend you, and on what basis it is calculated. Once a price range is established, the salesperson will have the information to help you find the right property within your guidelines. 12. As you inspect properties, your salesperson will get a real sense of what you like or dislike. Sometimes it takes a few trips to various properties for you to establish the parameters that are appropriate for you and your family. In a sense, you are establishing a relationship with your realty expert that will help both of you in this exciting time. 13. Once you are ready to make an offer, your realty professional will act as an intermediary between you and the seller. He/she will help negotiate price, down payment, contingencies, closing dates and anything else needed to bring the sale to a satisfactory conclusion. Select an agent that will be your guide, your diplomat, and your trusted advisor, as you pursue your property ownership objectives.

• With garden centers bursting with spring planting supplies, here’s a handy and fun twine keeper you can make with your kids using two repurposed clay flowerpots with drain holes. Choose a size that can easily fit a ball of twine or thin rope. Set the ball inside and invert one pot on top the other, threading the line through the drain hole of the top pot. Secure with tape or even hot glue. Now you can pull twine through the hole without the ball getting all tangled up!

Teens “Promposals” Don’t Come Cheap --Not long ago, a highschool kid would ask his favorite girl to the prom. She’d say yes, then the expensive parts would start ... limo, dinner, flowers, tickets, tux or dress, pictures, afterparty. Now the simple act of inviting has risen to the level of a marriage proposal, complete with all the hoopla and expense. Visa’s annual survey says that just asking someone to the prom will average $324 this year, approximately one-third of the $919 total cost. A Google search for “promposals” reveals 447,000 results. On Twitter, @ThePromposal has over 24,000 followers, many of whom have attached a photo or video showing how they did it. Sometimes the request is written inside the lid of a pizza box. Others are as simple as
a cake with “Prom?” in the icing. More expensive proposals include rented restaurant signs, highway billboards, even Jumbotrons. Spending on a promposal and the prom isn’t equal across the country. In the South, promposals will average $305, with the prom itself costing $544, totaling $937. In the Midwest, those figures are $218 and $515, for a total of $733. In the Northeast, promposal will average $431, with prom costing $738, for a total of $1,169. Out West, they’re looking at $342 and $596, for a total of $937. Most disturbing, however, is the incomes of families handing over these amounts. In a family with an income under $50,000, cost of prom and promposal will average $1,109. Under $25,000, and the family will spend an extreme $1,393. But those making over $50,000 will spend only $799. With parents expecting to pay 73 percent of the costs, teens don’t have much incentive to cut expenses. The free Plan’it Prom app helps students and parents make and stick to a budget for the prom (or any other event) by tracking spending as they shop. Look for it on iTunes, Google Play store or www. practicalmoneyskills. com/prom. The app has timeline, budget and costcutting tips. It’s worth considering. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
