Building Block By Block Danville Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity (DPCHFH) Executive Director Michael D. Parsons is fond of saying “miracles happen every day but we fail to recognize them.” If that is true then Lowe’s may have been the site of a small miracle this past Saturday as Danville Community College (DCC) and Lowe’s teamed for a block fund raiser to support DPCHFH’s next home. The block fund raiser was a successful follow up to last year’s 2x4 Fund Raiser which raised the 400 2x4’s needed to build the walls of the home. Saturday’s goal was the 600 cinder blocks needed to build the foundation of the next house in the Hughes Street Renovation Project. When presented with the opportunity to give a hand up to their neighbors, Lowe’s customers responded by donating over 600 blocks. The fund raisers were the brainchild of DCC Professor Robert Huffman and his students. Reflecting on the day he remarked that “the experience was so uplifting. My students were great, Lowes could not have been more supportive, and those who donated made me proud to call Danville my home.” The donation will provide all the block needed for the foundation and perhaps a few for the next Habitat home. The Hughes Street home is quickly becoming a DCC-Lowe’s home. Professor Huffman’s students also assisted with the design of the home. In the summer Professor Del Pool’s students will help build the home providing the student’s with practical experience which will combine with their academic qualifications to increase their career competitiveness. All the students will be working with materials donated by Lowe’s and their generous customers. Other companies are also contributing to the home. Columbia Forest Products donated the cabinets for the home. Home Depot has donated plumbing fixtures. West Main Baptist Church will assist with the roofing. Habitat is still seeking sponsors for dry wall, siding, roof trusses, and the floor system. Perhaps there are still a few miracles waiting to be recognized.

The Truth of Easter
(Beside Ruben’s on 41)
434-228-4548
When you think of Easter, what first comes to mind? Is it the Easter bunny, a basket of candy, or a new outfit to find? We know the Easter bunny delivering baskets of eggs and candy is just a tale. It’s fun for the kids and gives the stores lots of stu to sell. The truth of Easter is the greatest story to be told! And if you embrace its glory, it will save your soul! It will wipe away all the stains and soils of this earth, For the goal of Easter is to give you rebirth. The basket Jesus oers will feed you, your whole life through, Because it’s filled with the sweet forgiveness for every wrong you may do! His basket holds no eggs, but little messages hidden deep within His Word. And if you seek with all your heart, the greatest treasures will be heard. Whether you are a college scholar or have no education at all, Whether you are rich or poor, short or tall, Whether you dwell in a mansion or live in a small shack, Whether you are dressed as a king or queen, or have bare threads on your back. None of this matters at all to the Lord of lords and King of kings. He just wants you to be a part of His body and worship Him above all things! Jesus left the riches of heaven to come to this earth instead. He left the mansions of glory to have nowhere to lay His head. He preached and He healed and He taught according to His Father’s will. At the end of His ministry, with His disciples, Jesus shared His last meal. Symbolizing His body was the breaking of the bread. Symbolizing His Blood was the cup they shared as they all were fed. Entering the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus left His disciples so He could pray alone, Only to be betrayed by a kiss from one of His own. He laid down His Life and through great suering and torment, He died. For the love of you and I, on the cross, Jesus was crucified! The Blood that He shed will wash you whiter than snow, And the freedom He gives you is the greatest you will ever know! Jesus rose from the dead after paying the debt you couldn’t pay! His tomb is empty --- the stone rolled away! Jesus conquered death and is now preparing a place for you. Easter is God’s provision so you can conquer death too! You see, He loves you more than you will ever love yourself! In His Eyes, you are worth it all, because you are His greatest wealth!!

Scammers would rather have a pipeline right into your home rather than take a chance on mail that might get trashed straight out of the mailbox. Hence the rise in telephone scams. USA.gov has a section on phone scams and fraud that covers a number of the common ones, such as these: ‡ 6ODPPLQJ LV ZKHQ D phone company changes your service without your SHUPLVVLRQ ,I \RX ÂżQG charges for this on your phone bill, call to insist you be switched back. handling pre-recorded calls, unexpected sales calls and, especially, knowing the signs of a scam. The sooner you can identify clues that you’re about to be scammed, the sooner you can just hang up without giving out any information. Your cellphone isn’t immune to phone scams. If you enable the GPS on your apps, you’re essentially letting people know where you are, which makes you YXOQHUDEOH 'LVDEOH WKH GPS feature. Upgrade plans can be a source of trouble if you don’t ask about future upgrade fees when you buy a new phone. Ask lots of questions about frequency of upgrade, potential down payment and phone condition, and read the contract carefully. One-ring scams are one of new ones. Here’s how it works: Your cellphone rings once. The calling area code appears to be a domestic one, and the temptation is to call back to see who it was. The problem: The return call actually goes to a pay-percall international number that might incur fees just for connecting, and more fees every minute. Be sure you’re familiar with international area codes that are often tied to scams, such as 809 'RPLQLFDQ 5HSXEOLF 284 (British Virgin ,VODQGV *UHQDGD DQG -DPDLFD 'RQÂśW return any calls unless you know who it is. “Who Moved The Stone?â€? Not everyone who has accepted Christ as his Savior did so because he was born into a Bible believing Christian home. In fact, many have come to Christ who were outright disbelievers. Most people know the name C.S. Lewis. When his name comes up, Aslan starts to roar in people’s minds. Lewis was the author of the great Chronicles of Narnia series, the most notable of which is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Lewis was one of the greatest apologists of the Christian faith. He wrote many other books including Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters. What people often do not know is that Lewis, by his own admission, was “dragged kicking and screaming into the kingdom of God.â€? Lewis did not believe that there was such a thing as God. For him, the great hindrance to believing in God was all of the evil and injustice in the world. But Lewis, a logical man, quickly ran into a mental conundrum. He realized that he was, by using terms like evil and injustice, proving that there was an absolute standard of right and wrong to measure all behavior against. He said,
“How was I to know that a stick was crooked if I had no straight stick to compare it against?â€? Another such man was Frank Morison, a journalist who lived from 1851 to 1950. He said, “When, as a very young man, I began to seriously study the life of Christ, , GLG VR ZLWK D YHU\ GHÂżQLWH feeling that, if I may so put it, His history rested upon very insecure foundations.â€? Morison believed that Jesus was a very good man, but certainly not, as the Bible claims, the resurrected Son of God. Journalistic pen in hand, he set out to write a book. He said that he wanted to write about the last phase of the life of Jesus, and “strip it of its overgrowth of primitive beliefs and dogmatic suppositions.â€? And yet, when the dust settled, he had to refer to this as “the book that refused to be written.â€? You see, after Morison did an incredibly careful study both of the Biblical text, and the outside evidence to support it, he came to an inescapable conclusion: He had been wrong. About everything. Morison did write his book, or rather, the book wrote itself as he examined the truth.
The title he chose for it shows how clearly the evidence swayed him from a non-believer into a believer. It is titled Who Moved The Stone? The man who had once been a skeptic now understood that the resurrection was real, Jesus was and is the Son of God, and the Bible record could be trusted. When you go to worship this Easter morning, understand that you are not focusing on a myth or a story. The evidence for the account of Christ; his death, his burial, and his resurrection, is utterly solid. A former violent, murderous skeptic named Saul of Tarsus later wrote in Romans 1:4 that Jesus was “declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.â€? This man, who had nothing to gain and everything to lose, gave up a life of power and prestige for D OLIH RI VX̆HULQJ DOO EHFDXVH he actually met the resurrected Christ.
Happy Resurrection Morning!

Why We’re Not Retiring
--Complaints about boomers taking (or staying in) jobs go back for years. Critics became more vocal when the recession came along. We were supposed to retire and make room for the next generation to take the slots we’d been occupying. But we’re still hanging in there, often past the typical retirement age. There are a few reasons why many of us seniors are still working, often at parttime jobs. We don’t need a full-time paycheck because we have Social Security. But we need the extra cash because Social Security isn’t enough. (A recent survey showed that twothirds of us are uncertain about having enough money in retirement.) But some of the jobs we’re “hogging” are upper management, which serves to block those in

middle management from moving up. One thing to be considered: As long as we’re fully employed, we’re not collecting Social Security, we’re paying into it. Some of us are holding on to our jobs because there’s no way to cut back on the hours. What we do doesn’t lend itself to being parttime. Or perhaps we didn’t save enough for retirement, or we just like working. One factor in the equation: We’re not being pushed out by employers. They want us because we’re reliable. That’s often enough for an employer to hire or keep us. We’re productive. And we are the talent pool that serves as the glue in many industries. To be considered: We’re not job hoppers. If we’re employed, we generally stay ... unlike many in the younger generations who move from job to job, using that as a way to climb the ladder. That’s what they know, and staying put is what we know. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Ballad of Buckethead Craig
--If Rodney Craig did any one thing poorer than most people, it was walking away. But Craig certainly could hit, and boy could he run. The wiry 6-foot-1, 195-pound switch hitter, who was described as “having a gift for larcenyâ€? on the base paths, was the 6HDWWOH 0DULQHUVÂś ÂżUVW UHDO prospect to make it to the major leagues, which he ÂżQDOO\ GLG LQ His teammates called him “Buckethead,â€? probably for two reasons: his oversized Afro that required an oversized helmet to cover, and his correspondingly gigantic sense of ego and self-pride. And while he played well enough in the minors, he became an easy mark for the other players who knew how to toy with his delicate emotions. His other nickname was “Fish,â€? because he never knew when to walk away from the table. He had a history of walking away from the team, however. He had quit his high-school teams, his Mexican-league and Class A teams. At AAA Spokane he was hitting a steady .318, but he was emotionally erratic, quitting the team after a failed steal attempt of home. He was ÂżQHG +H FDPH EDFN EXW ZDONHG R̆ WZR ZHHNV later. For that, he was demoted to Class A San Jose. It was there that he said he lost his ego and concentrated on the game. That September he made KLV URRNLH GHEXW WKH ÂżUVW Mariners prospect to make it to the show, and he played lights out. He hit safely, often multiple times, in 13 out of 16

His baseball card shows a ballplayer that could barely open his bloodshot eyes in 1981. His eye at the plate had steadily worsened, too. For the rest of his career he garnered little playing time and hit LQ WKH UDQJH %\ he was out of the Majors, E\ KH ZDV RXW RI WKH minors, and soon after, he was out on the streets. According to police, Craig was stabbed after being told by a group of transients to leave. Craig tried to kick a dog as he left. He missed, but the dog’s owner did not, fatally stabbing him. The killer was convicted a few weeks ago and will spend 16 years in jail. Friends and neighbors of Craig’s will spend the rest of their lives wondering how this could happen, how someone who seemingly had it all, in the end had nothing ... couldn’t even kick a dog, he was so down. American Red Cross Needs Your Help Blood Drives In Our Area This March, the American Red Cross urges blood donors to become everyday heroes and help restock its shelves following severe winter weather across much of the U.S. Below are key messages blood drive volunteers can relay to donors while scheduling appointments: Following round after round of snow, freezing rain and arctic cold in many parts of the country, the American Red Cross has an urgent need for eligible blood donors to give now to help restock its shelves. March storms forced the cancellation of more than 200 blood drives, resulting in nearly 7,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations. This shortfall follows more than 26,400 uncollected blood and platelet donations in February due to severe weather across 27 states. Blood products are being delivered to hospitals almost as quickly as they come in. The Red Cross urges eligible donors in unaffected areas and those who can safely travel in affected areas to make and keep blood donation appointments to help ensure blood is available for those who need it. As a national network, the Red Cross can help ensure donations are available for patients at local hospitals as well as hospitals throughout the country – wherever there is a need. Donors with all blood types are currently needed, particularly those with types O negative, A negative, B negative, AB negative and AB positive.
• Blackberry Baptist Church 3241 Stones Dairy Road, Bassett Friday, April 3rd 1pm till 6pm Serving the famous Mountain Dew Cake
The following is a list of blood drives in your area:
• Emmanuel Episcopal Church 66 North Main Street Chatham Monday, April 13th 1:30pm till 5:30pm
• Holiday Shopping Center 240 Commonwealth Avenue, Martinsville Every Thursday 12p till 6pm Donors between April 2nd through July 30th can enter to win one to two tablets being given away.
Thank you for your continued support of the American Red Cross and our mission to Save, Extend and Improve lives every day!

I’m going through some serious withdrawals! -- Jeanette F., via email A: Well, I’ve got good news and bad news.
