EMAIL My Business A father walks into the market followed by his tenyear-old son. The kid is spinning a 25-cent piece in the air and catching it between his teeth. As they walk through the market someone bumps into the boy at just the wrong moment and the coin goes straight into his mouth and lodges in his throat. He immediately starts choking and going blue in the face and Dad starts panicking, shouting and screaming for help. A middle-aged, fairly unremarkable man in a gray suit is sitting at a coffee bar in the market reading his newspaper and sipping a cup of coffee. At the sound of the commotion he looks up, puts his coffee cup down on the saucer, neatly folds his newspaper and places it on the counter. He gets up from his seat and makes his unhurried way across the market. Reaching the boy (who is still standing, but only just) the man takes hold of the kid and squeezes gently but firmly. After a few seconds the boy coughs up the quarter, which the man catches in his free hand. The man then walks back to his seat in the coffee bar without saying a word. As soon as he is sure that his son was fine, the father rushes over to the man and starts effusively thanking him. The man looks embarrassed and brushes off the thanks. As he’s about to leave, the father asks one last question. “I’ve never seen anybody do anything like that before - it was fantastic - what are you, a surgeon or something like that?” “No” the man replies, “I work for the IRS, getting people to cough it up is my business.”

and did physical exams 69 percent of the time. * Patients were given the correct diagnosis 76 percent of the time. * Out of 101 complaints of ankle pain, only 17 recommended X-rays. * Only 83 patients were referred to a health provider, and that was because follow-up care could not be provided on a website. * Researchers found no big difference between the methods of communication, such as videoconference versus telephone. While the jury is still out on the accuracy and safety of virtual medical care, it is becoming big business, with some services aligning with corporations as a way to get fast medical care to employees. Before you decide to use an online site for medical care, determine whether your Medicare Advantage plan will pay for it. Some of them will. If you have an online medical visit, have your file and diagnosis forwarded to your regular doctor.

Virtual Medical Care --Seniors are clipping along at a fast rate when it comes to being involved in new technology. However, just because new things are available doesn’t mean we should participate until we check them out. Tele-visits for medical problems are one of those areas where the idea might be better than the actual execution. For someone who’s ill, however, and can’t get a same-day appointment with the doctor, the idea of going online for medical care might be appealing. A recent study looked at the results of telephone, webchat and videoconference medical visits to test the level of care and the accuracy of diagnoses. The illnesses were limited to fairly simple complaints such as lower back pain, sore (c) 2016 King Features throat, sinus infection Synd., Inc. and strep throat. Nearly 600 “virtual” online medical visits were made to eight websites, and the results were checked. Spieth No Evil

--This is a story about “The Good Ones,” the greatest team you’ve never heard of. And you can’t be blamed for that, since The Good Ones flew under the radar and only played intramural softball at the University of Maryland. The team played great ball, and if the magnificent-looking captain, a former freshman ballplayer with an alleged .314 career average, hadn’t been injured in a freak fall down the basement stairs orchestrated by his cat, they probably would have taken home the trophy. The rest of the team was rounded out by other luminaries, including a few superstar Terp football players, ACC champion wrestlers and club hockey players. And as hard as it is to believe, this shabbily dressed group of athletic ragamuffins also featured Kevin Plank at first base. Plank, some of you stockholders, sports junkies and financialpublication readers may know, is the founder and CEO of sportswear giant Under Armour. One now surmises that The Good Ones would be a very well-attired team should they ever reform for an old-timers’ game. So this team used to actually draw a bit of a crowd, even if most of the fans were their girlfriends. Maybe that’s why the aforementioned captain of the team tried to argue a call in his last game. Maybe he felt he had to show some tenacity. OK, so the captain was me. This has been bugging me for a long time. Hang with me, here. I was thrown out at second but was safe by a Maryland mile. I

tried to argue the call, but my body didn’t play ball. My headfirst slide looked more like a sputter into a gutter that knocked the wind out of me, and when I yelled at the ump, it sounded like I was having a seizure. I got kicked out of the game and came off like a bad sport, which I was. Fast-forward to 2016. Golfer Jordan Spieth is the same age as I was when I got booted from that softball game. And wouldn’t you just know it? He is sponsored by Under Armour, so I feel a certain kinship. Not just because of the apparel angle, but the loss of cool. A friend once told me that “He who loses their cool first, loses.” As we now know, young Master Spieth quadruple bogied at The Masters, and the naysayers are gunning for him like a mosquito at sunset. “He didn’t shake his hand”; “He never congratulated him”; “He told the cameras to step off”; and blah, blah, blah. Some have even said this loss will somehow hurt Under Armour, as some Wall Street pundits downgraded the stock. While I never returned to the field, you can bet that Jordan Spieth will be back. He’s 22, and he had a bad hole. If he merely bogied on No. 12, he’d have won his second Masters. No matter what anyone tweets or memes about the kid, no matter what they’ve heard, trust me ... Spieth is no evil villain here. Put it in context, like my slide into second, to understand I guess you just had to be there. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. “The Great Bathroom Battles” If the Lord tarries his coming another generation or so, I can only imagine what historians and sociologists will have to say about us... “In the 1960s, just a few short decades after taking flight, mankind set foot on the moon. One giant leap, indeed!” “In the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan boldly challenged the leader of the communist nations of the world to tear down the Berlin Wall, and just months later, that symbol of repression and isolation was merely a heap of rubble on the ash pile of history.” “In the 2010s, society came to blows over where people would potty.” It is a sad commentary that things have come to this. But it is part and parcel of what happens when a valuable ingredient is removed from society: shame. In Judges 18:7 Laish was described as a city in which “there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing.”Jeremiah chapter six speaks of the time when God’s people could no longer even blush no matter how degrading their behavior became. Shame, embarrassment, is actually a very essential component of an orderly society. Some years ago I was preaching at a church I had never been to before. I went into the restroom when I arrived, and when I came out, I found a line of ladies waiting, staring at me, giggling. I immediately turned as red as a beet; I had accidentally gone into the wrong restroom. That embarrassment has made me infinitely more careful ever since. The great argument over whether men “identifying” themselves as women or women “identifying” themselves as men should be allowed to use the opposite gender’s restroom is disturbing on so many levels. It calls into question hard science (things like chromosomes and DNA and anatomy) history (thousands of years of gender distinctions) Scripture (“He made them male and female” Matthew 19:4) privacy rights (most women and girls do not want men in the bathroom or changing rooms with them) and safety (what an open door for voyeurs and worse). All of this goes to the heart of one great question, though. Are people what they are, or are they what they think they are or wish to be? This came home to me forcefully this past week as I read a news story about a person who believes he is... a dragon. He actually started his journey into mythology by deciding that he was a woman. Everyone celebrated his “new reality,” complete with the surgery he underwent to complete the transformation. But when he/she decided he was now a dragon, and started

getting surgery to accomplish that transformation, his/her supporters gulped a bit. But when anyone can determine what “their own reality” is, how far is too far? Thinking of society’s brand new “dragon,”the bathroom battles, and the Rachel Dolezal debacle (the lady who pretended to be African American, and ended up as head of an NAACP chapter) it did not take me long to put my thoughts to poetry. “The Dragon In My House” I once had a son who thought he was a wagon, who later was sure that he might be a dragon. “I might could breathe fire, and maybe could fly!” he would say with assurance, and hope in his eye. “Now, son,” I responded with infinite kindness, “to think that way’s foolish, it’s practically blindness. You are what you are, you are not what you wish, a man is a man, not a dragon or fish.” My son smiled and nodded, “I understand, Dad, this dragon desire’s just a wish that I had..” Imagine my shock, then, my utter surprise, when he came home from school with contempt in his eyes. “Dad, you’re old fashioned, your views are outdated, my identity’s mine, whichever one I’ve created. Chromosomes lie, and some boys are now girls, DNA is irrelevant, some humans are squirrels. Old man Jones is now six, he didn’t like eighty, big Bertha is thin, though she still looks quite weighty. The white-as-snow family that moved in down the street, are black rappers now, so don’t dis on their beat.” I stood there in silence, not sure what to do, for nothing that my son was saying was true. But times are a-changing, and people are mean, upset them with facts, and they shout and they scream. So now I’ve a dragon that lives in my house, I must feed him each day with a newly caught mouse. But I can’t help but wonder, when facts ceased to matter, and those who held to them, became the mad hatters. But I must say goodbye now, for I hear a roar, I must go feed my dragon, he’s hungry for more. I have nothing but compassion for those who honestly think they are a different gender, or a different race, or a different age, or even a different species. But feeding untrue beliefs is not compassion. Nor is allowing others to be put at risk, or even making them uncomfortable to accommodate those untrue beliefs compassion. There is nothing more compassionate than truth, and than orienting a society around it.

Show Administrative Professionals They Are Appreciated: April 27th, 2016- Administrative Professionals Day Business owners and bosses and high-level executives may have their names on placards or monogrammed stationery, but the most successful businesses tend to be those in which the entire staff, from the company president to administrative professionals and so on, works together. A d m i n i s t r a t i v e professionals, sometimes referred to as “admins,” handle everything from spreadsheet generation to PowerPoint presentations to preparing schedules. Admins are often the unsung heroes of the workplace, and while they may not receive much fanfare, without the continued efforts of admins,

businesses may grind to a halt. In recognition of the roles they play, administrative professionals have been honored during a special week each April for the past 60 years. Called Secretary’s Day upon its inception in 1952, the holiday was later expanded and the name changed to incorporate all of the employees who play pivotal administrative rolls in companies big and small. Managers and business owners may choose their employees, but the following ideas can breathe fresh life into festivities and help boost employee morale even further. • Spring for coffee. Many employees require a caffeine buzz to get them through their busy days. The old pot in the break room may not deliver the best brews these days, and you can give employees another coffee fix to help them perk up. Check to see if independent coffee chains or even franchised businesses have to-go carafes. If not, consider purchasing a coffeehouse-inspired coffee maker, complete with the capabilities to make cappuccino and lattés. • Give the gift of time. What worker couldn’t use a few extra days off? Show gratitude by renegotiating vacation and personal time schedules with administrative professionals. Be open-minded to alternate work scheduled if they may keep employees happy and better able to serve the company. • Show your appreciation through letters or certificates. Professional-looking certificates are easy to come by because they can be produced right in the office with some desktop publishing software. Some office-supply stores also may carry preprinted certificates. A heartfelt thank-you letter also is something that admins may appreciate, as it shows employees their efforts are not being overlooked. • Present tickets to a game or a show. Many supervisors are given perks, such as free tickets to popular sporting events or other sources of entertainment at nearby venues. Pass on these free tickets to special employees who may not be able to afford box seats or front-row tickets to local theater productions. • Time pay raises to coincide with Administrative Professionals Week. Use this week as an opportunity to give bonuses or raises, rather than doing so at the beginning or end of the year. Administrative professionals do a lot to keep companies afloat and operating smoothly. Supervisors, managers and other higher-ups can take every opportunity to show their appreciation to these hard, yet often unsung, workers.

PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt “I feel our business has grown every year by advertising in the Piedmont Shopper. * “If you have china that has small, fine cracks in it, put it in a pot with enough milk to cover (not fat-free milk) and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes. The milk bonds in the cracks and somehow seals it right up.” -- B.I. in Virginia * After each use, clean a grill with aluminum foil. Simply wad up a piece of foil, and use it as a scrubber to remove stuckon foods. If you’re starting out with a dirty grill, you can still scrub with foil, and give the foil wad a spritz with cooking spray to oil the grate before cooking. (Never spray a lighted grill directly with cooking spray.) * “Kids counting down until the end of school? Make a handy paper chain that doubles as a countdown calendar. Write the date and the number of school days left in the year on each link in a paper chain. Then hang it somewhere close at hand. Each day, your child can remove a link to see the days till summer vacation shrink.” -- O.P. in Ohio

This can be an entryway or a store, or you maybe the sign that shows the section and floor of the parking garage.” -A.L. in Texas * A hanging toiletry bag makes a great backseat catch-all in the car on road trips -- especially for kids. Look for one that includes a hook so it can be hung from the front-seat headrest. Snacks, small notebooks and a box of crayons or a portable gaming device and extra games can be stored securely and neatly, then gathered up easily to bring with you to rest stops, diners and motels. Things to consider before downsizing your home NORTHPOINTE APARTMENTS

The decision to downsize a home is often bittersweet. Many couples who downsize their homes do so after raising a family. A home might be filled with memories, but downsizing a home helps couples save more money, and that financial flexibility often allows men and women to more fully enjoy their retirement. But in spite of the financial impact of downsizing a home, there’s more than just money at stake for homeowners thinking of downsizing their homes. The following are a handful of factors homeowners should consider before downsizing to a smaller home.

Real estate market The real estate market can be a seller’s friend or foe. Many sellers have a sale price in mind when they decide to sell their home, but the real estate market can be fickle, so homeowners should do their research before putting their home up for sale. Will the current market make it easier for you to get the most for your home, or will you have to settle for less than you prefer? How fast are similar homes in your area selling? When studying the real estate market, it’s also a good idea to study the market for smaller homes. If you plan on moving into a condominium but the market is not flush with properties, you might end up paying more than you want to for your new home, which might negate the savings you can expect from downsizing. Furniture When downsizing to a smaller home, many couples realize their current furniture is unlikely to fit into a smaller home. That means couples will have to sell or donate their current furniture and then buy all new items for their new home. If it’s been a while since you purchased new furniture, you might be in for some sticker shock on your first visit to the furniture store. Another thing to consider regarding your furniture is which items you simply can’t live without. An antique dinner table might have been the centerpiece for your family holidays over the last several decades, but there’s no guarantee it will fit into your smaller home. You may want to pass this down to your son or daughter, but that’s only possible if he or she has the room for it. Before deciding to downsize, consider your attachment to certain items that you may or may not be able to take with you to your new home and the emotional toll that selling such items might take if you’re left with no other options. Proximity to family When downsizing to a smaller home, many couples move out of the suburbs and into cities or towns with more ready access to culture and restaurants. While that accessibility is great, grandparents may find that it comes at the cost of less time with their grandchildren. That’s a steep price to pay for doting grandparents, and it may also impact your children if they frequently rely on grandma and grandpa for babysitting. Before downsizing, consider if you’re willing to move further away from your family. If not, you likely can still find a smaller home in close proximity to your current home and any nearby family members. Medical care Many older men and women must also consider the effect that moving may have on their medical care. Downsizing to a home in the country may make it harder to maintain contact with your current physician, and rural areas typically have less medical practitioners than more densely populated towns and cities. In addition, if you have been visiting the same physician for years, you may not want to move and have to start all over again with a physician who is unfamiliar with your medical history. Consider how much maintaining your existing relationship with your physician means to you, and if your next home will provide the kind of access to medical care you’re likely to need. Downsizing a home is not just about moving into a smaller property. To ensure you’re making the right decision, many factors must be considered before downsizing.

Scheduling Problems Are Legion At VA I’ve been rooting for little White River Junction, Vermont. Back when I first started watching the Department of Veterans Affairs medical center there, White River Junction had its hands full with claims overload. Sure, its numbers weren’t as bad as places like St. Petersburg, Florida, where 46,366 veterans waited an average 207 days for claims to be completed. For White River Junction to have 969 veterans waiting an average 239 days didn’t seem so bad. The VA Office of the Inspector General paid a call on the facility, as it is doing across the country after all the problems with appointment-scheduling scams exposed in Phoenix. Inspectors interviewed 40 people and reviewed 700,000 records in White River Junction, and the results aren’t pretty: * Half of schedulers entered the appointment date as the patient’s desired date 100 percent of the time. Others did that most of the time, making it look like appointments were made within required time frames.

* To keep from exceeding the 14-day appointment requirement, the mental health unit just sent new patients to its walk-in clinic so they could be seen that day. * Schedulers in multiple departments were putting information in paper folders to be entered later when appointments came available. That way patients could be scheduled within the 14-day window to make the stats look good. The electronic wait list (computerized scheduling) hadn’t been used in 8-10 years. * At one point, 700 consultations had not been scheduled. When upper management learned of the backlog, the appointments were put in the computer system, with overbooking “up to four times clinic capacity.” In one specialty clinic, appointment times were cut to 15-20 minutes to fit in as many patients as possible -- to the detriment of veterans’ health when serious illnesses weren’t discovered. I’m disappointed. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I know you’re not a psychiatrist, but I hope you can help. My dad was a single parent raising us kids, and he was always clean when it came to housework. Every room in our house was almost spotless. But lately, we have noticed him becoming a hoarder and being more disorganized. By that, I mean keeping weeksold newspapers on the floor, the kitchen table, everywhere, and he gets upset if we try to help him clean. He’s 79. Could it be a sign of senility or Alzheimer’s disease? -- R.S.

ANSWER: Hoarding behavior can have several psychiatric causes, and, indeed, a psychiatrist may be necessary to make the diagnosis. However, odds are that your dad always had some form of obsessive-compulsive disorder, and with age has become worse. There are other possibilities. Frontotemporal dementia, a type of dementia that is distinct from Alzheimer’s disease, has a variant in which personality and behavior changes are prominent, but given the history of what sounds like unusual cleanliness habits, I would suspect that OCD is the most likely diagnosis. There usually is a long delay from the time symptoms begin until the time the diagnosis is made. A diagnosis needs to be made before treatment -- be it medications, psychotherapy or some combination -- can begin. Treatment can improve not only the hoarding behavior but also the distress your dad is feeling. A psychiatrist or psychologist is the expert in making the diagnosis and for treatment. The booklet on Alzheimer’s disease details the symptoms of this common illness. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr.

Roach -- No. 903W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A year ago, my internist prescribed Evista for mild osteopenia, but my gynecologist said she would not have put me on medication yet. Two of my friends also have osteopenia, but they have not been prescribed medication. I stopped taking Evista last month, because of my fear of developing blood clots. What is your view on this? -- N.S. ANSWER: Osteopenia simply means “too little bone,” and it is a risk factor for developing osteoporosis. Most experts would treat osteopenia by ensuring that you are getting adequate calcium and vitamin D, and seeing that there are no other causes for your osteopenia, such as low thyroid level or medications that can lower bone density, such as cortisone. Although there may be reasons to treat osteopenia before osteoporosis develops, medicines like raloxifene (Evista) are reserved for the more serious condition of bone loss, osteoporosis. Raloxifine does decrease the risk of fractures. Raloxifene has risks: It increases the risk of blood clots by about 1 person per thousand over five years. However, it decreases the risk of breast cancer. Thus, raloxifene is a poor choice for someone with an increased risk of clots, but a very reasonable choice for women who need treatment for osteoporosis and also have an increased risk for breast cancer. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Mexican Beef & Rice Skillet Ingredients 1/2 onion, diced 1 lb. ground beef 1/4 cup taco seasoning (1 or 2 of the packets) 1 (14oz) can diced tomatoes, undrained 1 cup fire roasted corn kernels, drained 3/4 cups white long grain rice, uncooked 2 cups beef broth 1 1/2 cup shredded colby jack cheese Taco toppings: Sour Cream Diced Avocado Sliced Black Olives Chopped Cilantro Salsa Instructions 1 Cook the onion in a large skillet over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes, then add the ground beef, using a wooden spoon to break up and crumble. Cook until no longer pink. Drain and discard fat. Return skillet to heat. 2 Add the taco seasoning, diced tomatoes, corn kernels, rice and beef broth, stir until combined. Bring to a small boil, reduce heat to a simmer and cover. Cook for 20 minutes, stirring at 10 minutes. 3 Stir and top with the shredded cheese. Cover and cook on low for an additional 3 minutes or until cheese is melted. Top with the taco toppings of your choice! Enjoy! You can use regular corn kernels in place of the fire roasted ones. You can also add a 1/2 cup of rinsed and drained black beans to the skillet before covering to cook if desired.
