SHERRYLL ANN ISLEY VENABLE Sherryll Ann Isley Venable, 69, of 541 Holbrook Street, Danville, VA died April 10, 2015 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born January 8, 1946 in Danville, VA, a daughter of the late Sterling Isley and the late Ruth Wilson Isley. She was married to the late James Wesley Venable, Jr. She was the last survivor of her generation. Survivors include one son, Omari Venable (Jasmin) of Roanoke, VA; two grandsons, Satchel Venable and Langston Venable, both of Roanoke, VA; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 4:00 PM from Holbrook Street Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ronald Johnson officiating. HARRY LEE SWANSON Harry Lee Swanson, 73. Of Winston Salem, NC, died, Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the Brian Center of Salisbury, NC. Born April 7, 1942 in Pittsylvania County, VA, he was the son of the late Matthew and Ethel Mooreman Swanson. He was a Veteran of the United Stated Air Force. Survivors include one daughter, Tammy Swanson of Blairs, VA;

one son, Harry Swanson (Melinda) of Danville, VA; one sister, Thelma Tribble, of Whispering Pines, NC; one granddaughter, Ebony McCray; one grandson, Miles Swanson; two greatgrandchildren, Zariah and Trinitee Alls and a host of other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, April 17, 2015 11 AM with Military Rites by American Legion Post from Danville Memorial Gardens with Rev. Jonathan L. King, Sr. officiating. HELEN ELIZABETH SKIPWITH MITCHELL Helen Elizabeth Skipwith Mitchell, 95, of 2526 N. Main St., Danville, VA, died, Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the Roman Eagle Health Care Center. Born August 22, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Mary Elizabeth Foster Whitlock. She was married to the late Maurice Mitchell. She was the last survivor of her generation. Survivors include two sons, James W. Skipwith and George C. Skipwith, both of Danville, VA and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends at the residence of her granddaughter, Hope Barksdale, 115 Englewood Lane, Danville, VA. Lula Stokes Harrington, 87, of 1035 West Roberts St., Danville, VA, died, Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at the Danville Regional Medical Center. Born June 27, 1927 in Danville,VA, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Sue Noble Stokes. She was married to the late Charlie Roscoe Harrington, Sr. Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Mercer, Margie Walton (Larry) and Peggy Harrington all of Danville, VA; three sons, Charlie Harrington, Jr., Herbert Harrington and Burnell Harrington (Brenda) all of Danville, VA; 20 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren;a special niece, Jean Dallas and a host of other nieces, nephews,other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by seven siblings. The family will receive friends at the residence. RUBY SLOAN Ruby Sloan went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 15, 2015, after a hard fought battle against declining health for several years. Mrs. Sloan will be remembered for her unconditional love as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all as well as for her faith, compassionate spirit and the joy she brought to others by her random acts of kindness. Known for her dedication to her faith she was a long time member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. Mrs. Sloan was born on September 18, 1927 in Jackson County, NC, the daughter of Frank and Laura Hyatt. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Berkley “Buck” Sloan and was the beloved mother of three children: Millard Sloan and wife, Cheryl of Providence, NC; Brenda Jean Sloan

and fiancé Dan Smith of Raleigh, NC and Douglas Wayne Sloan of Ontario, Canada. She had three grandchildren: Brandon Sloan and wife, Andrea of Wendell, NC; Ryan Sloan of Raleigh, NC and Laura Sloan Stigall and husband, Matt of Lexington, KY. She also had two greatgranddaughters, Kelsey and Kiley Sloan. Mrs. Sloan is survived by three sisters: Evelyn Brendle and husband, Ernest of Franklin, NC; Maxine Saunders and husband, Leonard of Franklin, NC and Villie Johnson of Pumpkin Town, NC and one brother, Eddie Hyatt and wife, Peggy of Marysville, WA. In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by seven siblings: Verco Hyatt, Lucy Rogers, Perry Hyatt, Marie Mashburn, Myrtle Crawford, Leon Hyatt, and Leo Hyatt. The family thanks her caregivers, Eunice Tanner, Taylor Talley, Christine Mullin, and Rose Fuller for all their love, care, and support. A special thanks also to home health nurse Robin Lewis. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Sandy Creek Baptist Church with the Reverends Jimmy Bibee and Bill Sigmon officiating. WILLIAM “BILL” MATTHEWS KIRBY William “Bill” Matthews Kirby, 89, of 2408 Ridge Road, Danville, died on Sunday, April 19, 2014 at Abington Place after being in declining health for the past couple months. Mr. Kirby was born in Bessemer City, NC on July 19, 1925 son of the late Roy Kirby and the late Janie Mauney Kirby. He spent most of his life in the Danville area where he worked as a postal clerk for the US Postal Service. He proudly served his country in WWII on the USS Otis in the US Navy. He was a charter member of United Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Gideons. Mr. Kirby was married to the late Gloria McCain Kirby. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, James Kirby and Ned Kirby. Survivors include, daughter, Martha Kirby Turner and husband Curtis of Danville, VA; son, Jonathan Lee Kirby and wife Jeanette of Danville, VA; grandchildren, Christopher Kirby, Richard Kirby, Tony Turner and wife, Donna, and Lisa Baldwin and husband Wayne; and seven great

VERNELL R. CASSADA Vernell R. Cassada, 83 of 110 Vine Circle, Danville, VA died on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Pittsylvania County on December 27, 1931 to the late Oscar M. Cassada and Elsie D. Cassada. He retired from Thalhimers and Macys Department stores after 33 years of service. He was a member of Rock Springs United Methodist Church holding many positions. He was a 1950 graduate of Dan River High School. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years. He loved working in his yard and garden where he loved to share the fruits of his labor. He was a member of Danville Master Gardeners, Danville Sertoma Club and served his country in the United States Navy. On July 6, 1957 he married the former Thelma Ferguson Cassada who predeceased him on April 3, 2014. He is survived by his daughter Sharon K. Cassada; his sister- in- law, Ruth F. Scearce and her husband R. W. Scearce, Jr.; his brother -in-law, Maynard Ferguson and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Joel B. BETTY McNEELY REYNOLDS Betty McNeely Reynolds, 95, of Martinsville passed away on Monday, April 13, 2015 at Blue Ridge Rehab Center. She was born on October 23, 1919 in Henry County to the late George Lester McNeely and Lena May Motley McNeely. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H. GARLAND WINFORD WEAVER On April 13, 2015, Garland Winford Weaver, Sr., age 89, of 408 Brentwood Dr. Danville, Va. went home to be with his Lord and Savior. Mr. Weaver was born February 18, 1926 in Spray, N.C. to the late Posey and Rosa Belle Hill Weaver. He was a faithful member of Tree Of Life church where he served as a Deacon, Head Usher and was on the Board of Trustees; he was also a member of the American Legion Post 325. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Jenks and participated in the historic capture of the German sub U505 on June 4, 1944. He worked for Pet Dairy for 33 years prior to his retirement and also sold refrigeration appliances for 20 years. Garland loved woodworking, gardening and riding Harley Davidson motorcycles and was active in missionary work and traveled abroad. Garland was never happier than when he was surrounded by his family. Sundays were extra special for him, as the family always gathered at his home to share a meal and time together. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 66 years, Loraine Ingram Weaver; his sons, Garland Winford Weaver, Jr. (Kathy); Ricky J. Weaver (Pam Kingery); and daughter-in-law, Terri N. Weaver. “Papa” Weaver was blessed and very proud of his six grandchildren; RJ Weaver (Laurie); Laurie W. Miller (Larry); Brad Weaver (Sara); Nick Weaver (Heather); Brent Weaver (Melissa); and Tyler Weaver. His nine great-grandchildren Conner, Ashton, Brody, Ian, Hollyne, and Caroline Weaver and Anderson, Sue and Alexander Miller brought special joy into “Papa” Weaver’s life. THOMAS WAYNE MOORE Thomas Wayne Moore, 62, of 792 Sunset Drive, Dry Fork, Va. went to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, April 14, 2015 from his residence. He was born December 5, 1952 in Camp Lejeune, N.C. to Helen Moore and the late Curtis Thomas Moore. He married his loving wife Linda Hartsell Moore on June 17, 1971. Mr. Moore enjoyed rabbit and coon hunting, he was a baseball fan; cheering for the Virginia Cavaliers and the Atlanta Braves. He loved his family – especially his children and grandchildren. Prior to his decline in health, he worked for Raco for 25 years. Mr. Moore was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his daughters Lisa Moore Brooks and fiancé, Dee Pyrtle of Danville, Va., and Brooke Moore (Tim Wilkerson) of Dry Fork; his son Thomas Wayne Moore, II (Dana Neal) of Danville; his sister Karen M. Thompson and husband, Floyd of Danville; his brother Gary Moore and wife, Andrea of Chatham, Va.; and his grandchildren, Evan Brooks, Cara Brooks, Ryan Stewart, and Bryton Bernardez; and several cherished nieces and nephews. BOBBY W. WATKINS Bobby W. Watkins departed this life peacefully surrounded by loving thoughts from his family near and far to go to walk with his immediate family, friends and dogs who had gone on before him. Bobby was born May 5, 1938 in Pittsylvania County to the late Charlie Bays and Mary Sue McGregor Watkins and departed on April 14, 2015 at Wayland Nursing and Rehab in Keysville, VA after a decline in health for several months. Bobby was the last survivor of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Charlie Bays Watkins, Jr., Clarence W. Watkins (Cheetah), his sister Pauline Roberts and a nephew James Compton. Bobby lived most of his life in Ringgold, VA and the last 12 years in Gretna, VA. He was employed by Disston in his younger years before starting his own businesses, S & W Drywall and S & W Apartments. He worked as a contractor doing home improvements until his retirement due to disability. He loved working with wood, spending time at Leesville Lake, and being with his dogs throughout the years. Bobby is survived by his ex-wife, Alice Watkins of Ringgold; daughters Darlene Crumpton and husband Barry, Pam Watkins and fiancé David Denny and son, Mike Watkins and fiancée Rhonda Harlow all of Ringgold, VA. Grandchildren Laura Alderson (Jon), Bobby (BJ) Crumpton (Stephanie) and Randi Brown (Justin). Great-grandchildren, Jackson and Jayden Alderson and Lexi Brown. Sisters-in-law, Goldie Watkins-Reynolds of

Florida and Joan Watkins of Texas. Many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs Bonnie and Holly. MYRTLE BUCHANAN MILES Myrtle Buchanan Miles, 85, of 101 Edgehill Dr., Collinsville, VA died Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection, Stuart, VA. Miss Miles was born December 31, 1929 in Spencer, VA, a daughter of the late John A. Miles and Clara Clark Miles. Miss Miles was a member of Old Well Christian Church and attended Traditional Christian Church. She was retired from E. I. DuPont. She graduated from SpencerPenn High School. Myrtle bowled on a Dupont bowling team and traveled to many tournaments. She loved flower gardening and working in her yard and enjoyed attending the Martinsville Mustang games. Myrtle enjoyed her home at Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach, SC which she graciously shared with her family for many years. Surviving is a sister, Hattie G. “Kitty” Horsley of Bassett VA; a brother, James S. “Jimmy” Miles of Spencer, VA. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and a large extended family. Myrtle was dearly loved by her extended family and the time spent with her during her illness will always be cherished as a loving and treasured memory of our lives. In addition to her parents, Miss Miles was preceded in death by three sisters, Vera M. Wade, Nellie Mae M. Harrison and Elizabeth M. Moore and three brothers, Richard Allen Miles, Jack Miles and Carl Miles. Carolyn Owen Mills, 97, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, April 13, 2015 at Roman Eagle. She was born in Danville on May 6, 1917 to the late James and Pearl Owen. Carolyn was of the Baptist faith and a member of College Park Baptist Church. She worked for a many of years for Dan River Mills. Carolyn will be greatly missed. Along with her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Johnny S. Mills Sr. and sister, Ray Mays. Left to cherish her memory is her sons, Ronald Mills, Jerard Mills, and Johnny Mills, Jr., her daughter, Joni Mills Webster; grandchildren, Schuyler Mills, Antje Mills, Andre Mills and Jennifer Mills; and several greatgrandchildren. JAMES WILLIAM CASSELL, SR. Mr. James William Cassell, Sr., 87, of 621 Berry Hill Road, South Boston, VA, died on April 16, 2015 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born on April 26, 1927, in Schoolfield, Virginia, to the late John William and Lena Cooper Cassell. Mr. Williams worked as an electrician at I.B.E.W before retiring and was of the Baptist Faith. He is survived by a daughter, Lisa Cassell Harris of Danville; a brother, Bill Cassell of Danville; a granddaughter, Courtney Harris of Danville and several nephews. JOSEPH PHILLIP LEVY Joseph Philip Levy, age 94, formerly of 1008 Foster Rd., Alton, VA, died on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at Riverside Health Care Center. The family wishes to express their grateful appreciation for the loving care given to him while he was a resident there. He was born on September 08, 1920, in New York City, NY, to the late David Levy and Elizabeth Franklin Levy. Mr. Levy worked as a supervisor for the United States Navy. He spent most of his life in Virginia in Newport News, Hampton, and Calvary community areas. Mr. Levy was a veteran of the United States Army where he served for 4 and half years. Also, he was a member of the American Legion Post 325, Loyal Order of Moose Newport News Lodge 1119, and Good Sam Camping. He is survived by sons, David Levy of Alexandria, VA, Mark Levy (Cathy) and Richard Levy all of Hampton, VA; daughter, Stephanie Ellis (John) of Williamsburg, VA; five grandchildren; step-sons, Michael Annett (Chris) of Norfork, VA and Patrick Annett (Peggy) of West Chicago, IL; five stepgrandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents Mr. Levy was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Levy; son, Paul Levy, and stepson, David Annett. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2015 at Calvary United Methodist Church in Alton, VA with Rev. Ralph K. Hawkins officiating. HUSTON WAVERLY COOK Huston Waverly Cook, age 90, of 142 Imperial Rd., Pelham, NC, died on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at the Brian Center-Yanceyville. He was born on January 02, 1925, in Rockingham, NC, to the late Willie Cook and Lou Durham Cook. Mr. Cook worked in the weaving department at Dan River Mills. He lived most of his life in the Pelham Community. Mr. Cook was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a true outdoors man. He is survived by sons, Steven W. Cook (Sherry) and Leonard D. Cook all of Pelham; daughters, Rachel C Mathews (Darrell) of Henry County, VA and Retha C. Mabe (Charles) of Lexington, NC; brother, Wayne Cook of Pelham; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Ezetta Furr. PATTI DODD PAXTON WALTON Patti Dodd Paxton Walton, age 86, of 231 Ridge St. Apt. 215, Danville, VA, died on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born on September 20, 1928, in Danville, VA, to the late Silas Jones Dodd and Lillie Blair Dodd. Mrs. Walton was a selfemployed business owner and was of the Baptist faith. She was a prestigious member of Personalities of the South due to service to the community. Mrs. Walton also was distinguished for her efforts with church, education, The Arts, Civic, Business, Youth, Volunteer, which were all organization both locally and nationally. She was a loving and caring person and the last of her generation. She is survived by her daughter, Wyona Paxton Witcher of Danville, VA; grandson, William Paxton Witcher; granddaughter, Emily Blair Neal (Bryan Roper); step-grandchildren, Amber Walton and Kellum Walton; sister-in-law, Dorothy Paxton McDaniel; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents Mrs. Walton was predeceased by her first husband, William Jennings Paxton Jr.; second husband, John Kellum Walton; daughter, Wanda Blair Paxton Neal; and nine brothers and sisters. ROY BURTON HERNDON Roy Burton Herndon, 86, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born on February 14, 1929 to the late Arthur and Mamie Willis Herndon. He served his country proud in the United States Air Force. Roy worked for DuPont and also was a Cattle and Hog Farmer. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his children, Wallace Herndon and David Herndon; brothers and sisters, Lottie Mitchell, Sanford Herndon and Willis Herndon. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 37 years, Evelyn Wilson Herndon of the home; his children, Greg Herndon and Shelia Adkins; step-son, Phillip Keatts; grandchildren, Denise Ingram, Wallace Herndon, Jr., Charles Keatts, Brian Keatts, Dwayne Keatts and Chris Keatts; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sister, Sally Deal. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 6-8pm at Mt. Calvary Holiness Church Chapel and other times at the home. VERA GREEN ARNN LUMPKIN Vera Green Arnn of 350 Lumpkin Rd. E., Leesburg, Georgia formerly of 365 Arnn Lane, Danville, Virginia died April 16, 2015 in Lee County Health and Rehab. She had been a patient there for the last four months. The funeral services will be held Monday, April 20 at 11 AM at Swicegood Funeral Home with interment in Mountain View Cemetery, Danville, Virginia. The reverend Robert Hardy IV and Elder Mark Terry will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services. Mrs. Arnn was born July 18, 1918 in Pittsylvania County to the late Jessie L. and Ola Blair Green. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Ashby Wright Arnn. She lived most of her life in the Vance Community where she was a member of Sharon Baptist Church and attended Cannan Primitive Baptist, the last few years she lived in Virginia. She was a weaver in Dan River Cotton Mills in her younger years and was later employed by the Pittsylvania County School System, where she worked until her retirement in

1982. Due to ill health Mr. and Mrs. Arnn moved to Leesburg in 2006 to live with their daughter and son-in-law. Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Smith (John); two grandchildren, Lynn Smith (Susan) and Laura Cloud (Tony); four great-grandchildren, Luke Smith (Heather), John Ashby Smith, Connor Cloud and Kyle Cloud all of Leesburg, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Betty A. Ward (Bobby) of Daniels, West Virginia and a Brother-inLaw, Gene Arnn (Maudie) of Biloxi, Mississippi. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by a daughter, Connie Jo Arnn and two brothers, Irvin and P.D. Green.
