A father walks into the market followed by his tenyear-old son. The kid is spinning a 25-cent piece in the air and catching it between his teeth. As they walk through the market someone bumps into the boy at just the wrong moment and the coin goes straight into his mouth and lodges in his throat. He immediately starts choking and going blue in the face and Dad starts panicking, shouting and screaming for help. A middle-aged, fairly unremarkable man in a gray suit is sitting at a coffee bar in the market reading his newspaper and sipping a cup of coffee. At the sound of the commotion he looks up, puts his coffee cup down on the saucer, neatly folds his newspaper and places it on the counter. He gets up from his seat and makes his unhurried way across the market. Reaching the boy (who is still standing, but only just) the man takes hold of the kid and squeezes gently but firmly. After a few seconds the boy coughs up the quarter, which the man catches in his free hand. The man then walks back to his seat in the coffee bar without saying a word. As soon as he is sure that his son was fine, the father rushes over to the man and starts effusively thanking him. The man looks embarrassed and brushes off the thanks. As he’s about to leave, the father asks one last question. “I’ve never seen anybody do anything like that before - it was fantastic - what are you, a surgeon or something like that?” “No” the man replies, “I work for the IRS, getting people to cough it up is my business.”

Centralized Archives The Department of Veterans Affairs announced recently that the Dayton VA Medical Center will be the new site for the National Department of Veterans Affairs Archives. The plan is to renovate two existing buildings, built in 1871 and 1881. Ideally they will completely gut the old buildings and start fresh, with fire safety a big consideration. Anyone who has requested military records from the National Archives’ National Personnel Record Center in St. Louis and been told that the records burned up in the 1973 fire will appreciate that sentiment. The fire damaged or destroyed as many as 18 million Army and Air Force records. In the aftermath, it ordered that records from around the country not be destroyed anymore, since they could be used to piece together the history of veterans who apply for benefits or for future generations doing genealogy. Now the VA is trying to get all records from all sources digitized.

Different branches have different methods of producing records, and not all are digitized. Some historic records and artifacts are stored at National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. Others are scattered at 150 facilities around the country. The plan to centralize all of it is theoretically a good one. However, until the VA has caught up on all current records requests, any plans to centralize historical documents and objects should be put on hold until all records are digitized. Meanwhile, make a copy (paper and digital) of every single piece of paper you have pertaining to your military service. Make a list of dates, locations and personnel who served with you. Put it in a bank box. You never know when it will be needed. To read the full reports and keep track of new ones as they come in, check www.va.gov/oig. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Patches

3-8-05 to 4-24-16 I'll miss how you squatted on your hind legs and begged for treats. I'll miss how you pretended to be a dog and played fetch with me. I'll miss how every time I was sick you were always by my side. I'll even miss those days you hid for hours because you were going to the vet... How you figured that out I'll never know I named you Patches because of your beautiful coat of many colors, but it was symbolic because you covered so many holes in my life. I often wondered who rescued who. You were the most special kitty in the whole world. Play with Champ and Dino at the rainbow bridge. Hopefully one day we'll meet again. I Love and Miss You So Much Precious

Love, Mommy (Mary) of Roman Eagle Nursing & Rehab for their care of Mrs. Dallas. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is respectfully serving the Dallas family.

“How Old Are You Anyway?” I am too impatient to fish, and when I attempt to golf, I have a slice wicked enough that, if I could hit the ball far enough, it would circle around and hit me in the back of the head. But since every preacher needs a hobby, a diversion to give an outlet to the normal stress of the ministry, a few years ago I started lifting weights. As I hit each new plateau on bench press or leg press, it merely fueled my passion to go further. As I got reasonably decent at the bench press, some of the really good lifters (and great guys) in the gym took me under their large, beefy wings. They corrected my form, pushed me to do more, and eventually convinced me to start doing bench press competitions. I have done several now, and really enjoy them. A week or so ago I was in a contest, and it turned out to be a big one. Guys I had never seen before showed up, really strong guys.

When it came my turn for my first lift, I opened up with 305 pounds. I got that relatively easily. So for my second attempt I did 310. I got it, but it was a struggle. Half way up the weight just stopped. Normally that is all she wrote, but somehow after a few seconds of pushing, I got it going upward again, and completed the lift. As I went to the sideline, another lifter, a bull-strong young man of about twenty met me, and with eyes wide said, “That was a great lift, you are really strong!” But before I had any opportunity for my head to swell, he said, “How old ARE you anyway?” I had trouble holding back the tears of laughter as I told my wife later, “he wasn’t impressed with my lift; he was amazed that I made it into the gym without a walker!” Clearly, I am not as young as I used to be. Forty-five years have come and gone in the blink of an eye, and I

now find myself thinking of things like Social Security, grand children, gray hairs, and walk-in tubs. I also find myself more and more hoping that the Lord will come soon, so I do not have to go by way of the grave. But I am under no illusions of an inescapable fact: if the Rapture does not occur in the next few decades, I have an appointment, one that all men must keep. Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Every person who is ever born has an appointment at some time with death. But, since mankind has the very breath of God coursing through him, his soul will eternally live forever somewhere, either heaven or hell. I know the desire of God on this matter. 2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” It is not God’s desire that anyone spend so much as a moment in that awful place called hell. That is why he shed his blood and died on the torturous cross of Calvary. I also know that God will not force anyone to receive him. John 1:11-12 says,“He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” Salvation is a “whosoever will” matter, but it is therefore also a “whosoever won’t” matter. Everyone has a chance to be saved. What no one has is unlimited time to do so. When we consider that we do not know the day of our own death, the answer to “how old are you, anyway?” may just be “much older than you think.”

serious skin diseases, including rash and blisters. In 2015, the FDA amended the required warning on packages to expand on the possibility of liver damage. One consumer product that contains acetaminophen goes much farther in its label warning and says not to take it with other drugs, limit use of caffeine, avoid alcohol, and more. This should be a warning to all of us. Just because something is available over the counter doesn’t mean it’s safe in all situations. And even if we’ve taken a drug for a long time without harm, we need to start reading labels every time because the information in them might have changed. To keep up with new information from the FDA, have updates sent to you by email. Go online to fda.gov and put Get Email Updates in the search box. --Acetaminophen, a commonly used over-thecounter pain reliever and fever reducer, has been shown in research trials to reduce the ability to spot errors. That can be serious, depending on what the user is doing while taking the drug. In double-blind clinical trials, those taking acetaminophen didn’t notice any difference in their ability to see errors, but the test results told a different story: There really were slower reactions and mistakes. (The participants’ task was to hit one of two buttons when certain letters appeared on a screen.) Acetaminophen is an active (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc. ingredient in hundreds of over-the-counter and prescription medicines. If you take a pain reliever, be sure to read the package label to see if it contains acetaminophen, especially if you have liver problems. 1. Who was Isaac in Sir Isaac and the Do-Dads? 2. Name the group that released “Whole Lotta Woman” in 1961. (Hint: The group’s original name was The Blenders.) 3. Who released “But It’s Alright” and when? 4. Mark Dinning, Dion and the Belmonts, and Donovan all released songs with the same title. What’s the song? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “The poet, the physician, the farmer, the scientist, the magician and the other so-called gods of our legends.”

May 7, 2016

Answers 1. Isaac Hayes, of “Shaft” fame. He got his start in the blues clubs of Memphis, Tennessee. 2. The Contours, a Motown Records group. The song never charted, even though it was written by Smokey Robinson of the Miracles. 3. J.J. Jackson, in 1966. But it was the single’s b-side, “Boogaloo Baby,” that got people dancing. 4. “Teen Angel.” Only Dinning’s version was successful, despite radio stations banning the song because it was so sad. 5. “Atlantis,” by Donovan in 1969. The theme is the idea that Atlantis was a pre-flood (under the ocean) civilization and that his true love might be down there waiting. References to the song abound: In the film “Goodfellas,” Stephen King’s “Hearts in Atlantis” novel, an episode of “Futurama” and more. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The decision to downsize a home is often bittersweet. Many couples who downsize their homes do so after raising a family. A home might be filled with memories, but downsizing a home helps couples save more money, and that financial flexibility often allows men and women to more fully enjoy their retirement. But in spite of the financial impact of downsizing a home, there’s more than just money at stake for homeowners thinking of downsizing their homes. The following are a handful of factors homeowners should consider before downsizing to a smaller home.

Real estate market The real estate market can be a seller’s friend or foe. Many sellers have a sale price in mind when they decide to sell their home, but the real estate market can be fickle, so homeowners should do their research before putting their home up for sale. Will the current market make it easier for you to get the most for your home, or will you have to settle for less than you prefer? How fast are similar homes in your area selling? When studying the real estate market, it’s also a good idea to study the market for smaller homes. If you plan on moving into a condominium but the market is not flush with properties, you might end up paying more than you want to for your new home, which might negate the savings you can expect from downsizing.

Furniture When downsizing to a smaller home, many couples realize their current furniture is unlikely to fit into a smaller home. That means couples will have to sell or donate their current furniture and then buy all new items for their new home. If it’s been a while since you purchased new furniture, you might be in for some sticker shock on your first visit to the furniture store. Another thing to consider regarding your furniture is which items you simply can’t live without. An antique dinner table might have been the centerpiece for your family holidays over the last several decades, but there’s no guarantee it will fit into your smaller home. You may want to pass this down to your son or daughter, but that’s only possible if he or she has the room for it. Before deciding to downsize, consider your attachment to certain items that you may or may not be able to take with you to your new home and the emotional toll that selling such items might take if you’re left with no other options.

Commercial Rental Property

Proximity to family When downsizing to a smaller home, many couples move out of the suburbs and into cities or towns with more ready access to culture and restaurants. While that accessibility is great, grandparents may find that it comes at the cost of less time with their grandchildren. That’s a steep price to pay for doting grandparents, and it may also impact your children if they frequently rely on grandma and grandpa for babysitting. Before downsizing, consider if you’re willing to move further away from your family. If not, you likely can still find a smaller home in close proximity to your current home and any nearby family members.

Medical care Many older men and women must also consider the effect that moving may have on their medical care. Downsizing to a home in the country may make it harder to maintain contact with your current physician, and rural areas typically have less medical practitioners than more densely populated towns and cities. In addition, if you have been visiting the same physician for years, you may not want to move and have to start all over again with a physician who is unfamiliar with your medical history. Consider how much maintaining your existing relationship with your physician means to you, and if your next home will provide the kind of access to medical care you’re likely to need. Downsizing a home is not just about moving into a smaller property. To ensure you’re making the right decision, many factors must be considered before downsizing.

DOGWOOD

COLLECTION * You can keep little office items like paperclips, push pins, etc., organized in a drawer by using an icecube tray. It makes a great organizer for different sizes of nails, too. * When shopping around for electronic equipment -- especially computerrelated items and such -- make sure you factor in the cost of necessary accessories. Many products don’t come with all the cords, batteries, memory chips, etc., that you’ll need. Oftentimes, these can make a big difference in what seems like a really good deal.

The Dogwood Collection features bedroom, dining room, living room and occasional pieces. This lovely collection is sold locally, and exclusively, at M & M Furniture and discounted 45% off of retail list prices every day. “Much More For Your Money!” y!”

Strawberry Sweet Rolls Ingredients: For the Dough: 1 cup scalded whole milk 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1/3 cup granulated sugar 2 1/2 teaspoons dry active yeast 2 large eggs 4+ cups all purpose flour 2 teaspoons salt For the Filling and Glaze: 15 ounce can premium strawberry pie filling 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened 1 tablespoon butter 3/4 cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Zest of one lemon Directions: Set the butter, eggs and cream cheese out to warm to room temperature. Place the milk in a small sauce pan. Bring to a boil. The moment it reaches a boil, remove from heat. (This process is called scalding, and it ensures the milk doesn’t effect the yeast’s ability to rise. Don’t skip!) Pour the hot milk into the bowl of an electric mixer and add 1/2 cup butter, to bring the temperature down. Stir and allow the butter to melt completely. Then stir in the sugar. Touch the milk mixture to test the temperature. It should be close to luke warm. If it is not, add 1/2 cup flour and test again. Once it is just above room temperature, stir in the yeast and let it foam for approximately 10 minutes. (Hot liquid can kill yeast.) Place the bread hook on the mixer and turn on low. Add the eggs, salt, and remaining flour up to 4 cups. Allow the mixer to “knead” the dough until it pulls away from the sides. Run the mixer for approximately 10 minutes to allow the dough to stretch and develop the gluten. If the dough seems too sticky after the first 2-3 minutes add an additional 1/4 cup flour. After 10 minutes, turn the mixer off. Cover the top with plastic, and allow the dough to rise until double in size, approximately 60-90 minutes in a warm kitchen. Dump the inflated dough out on a well-floured work surface. Fold into thirds and press flat. Then turn and fold into thirds again and press into a rectangle. Roll the rectangle out into a large 12 X 20 inch sheet. Using a large flat spreader, spread the strawberry pie filling (or fresh strawberries) over the sheet into a thin layer. Leave 1 1/2 inches bare on one long edge. Be careful not to gouge holes in the dough. Starting at the covered long edge, roll the dough sheet tightly toward the uncovered edge to form a long tight log. Place a piece of parchment paper in a 9 X 13 inch baking dish. Then cut the log into 12 equal rolls, and place them in the baking dish to rise. This is a messy process. If strawberries fall out, just tuck them back in the rolls once cut. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Allow the rolls to rise for at least 30 minutes while the oven heats. Then bake for 20-25 minutes, until the edges are barely golden and the centers of each roll are puffed up. For the Lemon Cream Cheese Glaze: While the rolls are in the oven, beat the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and lemon zest together until completely smooth. The moment the rolls come out of the oven, gently spread the glaze over the tops and allow it to seep down into the cracks. Serve warm or at room temperature. NOTES: This recipe can be made with fresh strawberries when in season. Instead of pie filling, mix 2 cups sliced strawberries, with 1/2 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons cornstarch. Spread the berries over the dough as directed above and continue following the recipe as-is.
